THE WONDER RUBBER CLONE
RUBBER CLONE RRII 105 is the spectacular achievement of the Rubber Research Institute of India which
is unique in the whole rubber growing countries around the world. It was derived by cross breeding of
two clones Tjir 1 and Gl1 the former as the female parent and the latter the male. The clone RRII 105
was fortunate enough to inherit the high productivity of both and the high disease tolerance of the male
parent, thus being in possession of high productivity and high disease tolerance, a very rare combination
indeed!
WHY 105 HAS THE HIGHEST PRODUCTIVITY?
It has inherited the character from both the parents. The dark greenish glossy leaves the clone inherited
from its male parent. Because of this character of the leaves the clone is capable of harvesting excessive
quantity of sunlight utilizing which the tree performs higher rate of photosynthesis and utilizing the
assimilates, proportionately higher rate of latex is being synthesized. The main stem stops growth atabout three meters height giving birth to two or three branches only which acquire roughly as much
girth as the main stem and consequently the total bark quantity and hence the laticiferous tissue are
also more in the clone. Hence the raw material for latex synthesis is more, the factory capacity is more
and hence the quantum of latex production is correspondingly more. In the clone the productivity is
2210 kg per hectare using the conventional method, but by USING THE NEW IUT TECHNOLOGY IT CAN
VERY WELL BE ENHANCED TO MORE THAN 5000 KG PER HA.
WHAT ABOUT REACTION TO DISEASES?
The clone is highly tolerant to all the leaf diseases therefore warranting no fungicide application at all.
But the clone is highly susceptible to the most important stem disease namely Pink Disease of Rubber
PINK DISEASE

If not prevented in time this disease will be highly damaging to the trees from the second year to the
twelfth year causing death of branches the whole crown or at times the whole tree.
The disease is caused by the fungus Corticium salmonicolor.
The disease used to be managed by fungicide application.
Since the disease infects the plants during rainy months of June to September warranting fortnightly
tracing and treatment during the period with fungicides it was the most expensive, time consuming
and laborious cultural operation for the rubber grower. Hence with this the trees sustained serious
casualties and growth retardation affecting the productivity of rubber to a great extent.
BUT THE PINK DISEASE IS NO MORE ATHREAT TO THE RUBBER PLANTATIONS AT PRESENT AT ALL!
THE DISEASE CAN VERY WELL BE TOTALLY PREVENTED.
JUST LIKE INFANTS ARE BEING PROTECTED FROM INFECTIOUS DISEASES BY VACCINATION THE
RUBBER PLANTS ALSO CAN BE PROTECTED FROM THE ATTACK OF PINK DISEASE BY PREVENTIVE
BORDEAUX PASTE APPLICATION. IT IS IN PRACTICE FROM 1994 ONWARDS.
BEFORE THE ONSET OF MONSOON RAINSTHE PLANTS ARE TO BE GIVEN PREVENTIVE BORDEAUX
APPLICATION FOR THE 2 YEAR OLD AND 3 YEAR OLD PLANTS.
1 The two year old plants are to be applied with Bordeaux paste 10 per cent at the first forking region
and on the topmost brown portion of the leader.
2 Three year old ones are to be applied on the top most forking regions and the topmost brown portionsof the leaders with the paste. BORDEAUX PASTE HAS TO BE OF 10 PER CENT STRENGTH. APPLICATION
CAN BE DONE USING LONG HANDLED BRUSH FROM THE GROUND. THIS YEAR MONSOON BEING
MORE SEVERE THE SEVERITY OF THE DISEASE CAN BE HIGHER. HENCE PREVENTIVE APPLICATION HAS
TO BE STRICTLY FOLLOWED ON A WAR FOOTING.
Beware, it is better to be a little bit late than never.
ON COMPLETION OF THIS VACCINATION THE 105 TREES DO NOT WARRANT ANY FUNGICIDE
APPLICATION AT ALL THROUGHOUT ITS LIFE.
It becomes an organic farming in effect.
