Dear Parents/Guardians:
We are off to a great start at Woodbridge Public School. September was busy and filled with many exciting events and initiatives. Our Cross Country team began meeting and our girls and boys volleyball and basketball teams were formed. During Safety Week, we conducted a fire drill and discussed the importance of two other emergency drills - Lockdown and Hold and Secure. We will have more drills in the coming months to review these important safety procedures. Our Terry Fox School Walk/Run was also a great success as everyone enjoyed time outside together while
listening to invigorating tunes organized by the Tech Crew.
During the month of October, we will launch our Hot Lunch programs, participate in the annual Cross Country Meet and welcome guest speaker Michelle Cassidy, the YRDSB Mental Health Lead, on Thursday, October 27th, at 6:30 p.m. Michelle will be speaking about how to build resilient children and is well known for engaging, funny and entertaining presentations. Please
join us and bring your friends and family, too. Childcare will be provided.
A few weeks ago, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released a School Report for 2015-2016 for each elementary school across the province on their website, www.eqao.com. We use data from these reports alongside other classroom and school assess-ment data, to inform our school improvement planning to support student achievement and well-being. Ultimately, our goal is to look for sustained growth in achievement over time, aligning our school efforts with the York Region District’s School Board’s Improvement Plan focusing on Math, Modern Learning and Mental Health. We would encourage those interested to view the detailed School Report available online at the EQAO website. As always, we thank our teachers, staff, parents and community for being our trusted partners in promoting a shared commitment to the
best teaching and learning we can provide for our students.
The results of the 2015-2016 EQAO Provincial Assessments for grades 3 and 6 students which assesses the areas of reading, writing and math, can be found on page 2. We are very proud of our students’ accomplishments and look forward to setting new goals and working towards future
growth.
On Thursday, October 6th, we will have our Curriculum Night / Meet The Teacher Night. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Parents and guardians play an integral role in the school community. It is recognized that parent engagement is a key factor in the enhancement of student achievement and well-being. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday and appreciate your time and effort and recognize that together with your active involvement we can make our
school greater.
As always, if you have any questions or would like to talk, please feel free to contact us at the
school. Thank you for a wonderful start to the school year.
Your Partners in Education,
Mrs. S. Morgan and Ms. J. De Rose

books for your family!
We look forward to seeing everyone on
Thursday, October 6th!
Emergency Drills
In order to ensure the safety of everyone in our building, we hold
different types of emergency drills over the school year. We keep
detailed records of all drills and these are monitored as a part of
our annual fire and safety inspections. We had a fire drill during
the third week of school and we cleared the building in two
minutes.
During Safety Week, September 23 to 30, 2016, we conducted a
second fire drill. We will be conducting a Lockdown drill and a Hold
and Secure drill in the near future. When a Lockdown is
announced, classrooms and school doors are locked, classroom
lights are turned off and windows are covered. Everyone in the
classroom “hides” so that no one is visible through the hallway
windows. The Lockdown is used in an emergency and is called
when there is threat by an intruder inside the school building.
More information about these drills and
the Board’s commitment to creating
caring and safe school climates, please
refer to YRDSB Policy and Procedure

Terry Fox School Walk/Run
On Friday, September 30th, the students and
staff members of Woodbridge P.S. participated
in the Terry Fox School Walk/Run.
Terry Fox ran his Marathon of Hope to raise
money and awareness for cancer research.
Terry lost a leg to cancer; however, this did not
stop him from believing that with hard
work and perseverance, anything is pos-
sible.
Thanks to all students who brought in a
Toonie for Terry. Together, we can work
to find a cure for cancer.

Head Lice (Pediculosis)
Head lice or pediculosis is common in school aged children and is not a communicable disease. All families can contribute to the decrease of
head lice in our school communities by performing regular head checks of their children and treating the head lice if found. Checking for lice takes
patience, diligence and plenty of time. It is recommended that you always be sensitive to the child’s feelings around this topic. Head lice can hap-
pen to anyone regardless of social class or level of personal cleanliness. When head lice is identified at school, parents are contacted so treatment
can start right away. Children are allowed to re-enter the class only when all of the lice eggs (nits) have been removed from the hair. Notices and
an information pamphlet are also sent home with other students in the class. Effective treatment of head lice includes:
checking all family members for lice;
using the appropriate shampoo; and
treating all family members that have lice;
removing all nits (eggs).
Additional information about head lice is available through the York Region Community and Health Services. York Region Health Connection infor-
mation telephone line also provides consultation regarding the identification, prevention and treatment of head lice. If you have questions about
head lice or any other public health-related topic, please contact York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653, TTY 1-866-252– 9933.
