RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “Shanah Torah – A Year of Study”

Preparing for the morning service each day, I study a

passage from the Talmud which lists those actions that

have immediate benefit and which continue to provide

benefit to us – attending minyan, home hospitality, visiting

the sick, making peace between two people – a list that

concludes ‘And the study of Torah is equal to them all.’

When Jews use the word ‘Torah,’ we mean two things

simultaneously. Narrowly, we refer to the five Books of

Moses, whose words we read from a scroll on Shabbat,

holidays and selected weekdays. But we also mean ‘Torah’

more broadly, in the sense of all sacred learning. When we

learn to chant a haftarah from the prophetic books, read an

ethical teaching from the sages of Pirkei Avot, or hear a

sermon from the bimah, those are all forms of Torah. Any

kind of engagement with sacred texts connects us to our

most deeply held beliefs and values, and to our identities

as Jews. And as the Talmud text I mentioned makes clear,

sacred learning is not merely incidental to other Jewish

values; it is their source. Saying that the study of Torah is

equal to all other acts of kindness, morality and decency is

tantamount to saying that Torah is itself the sum of all that

is worthy in life.

It pleases me no end to tell you that our community is

embarking on a year of study in which we deepen and

broaden our connection to Torah, in all its senses. We will

be engaged in a year of Torah – Shanah Torah – in which

we learn and celebrate the structure and content of Torah,

UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS TISHA B’AV

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE DEADLINE – AUGUST 8, 2014.

This is the Deadline for the Book of

Remembrance Forms is August 8, 2014.

Please be sure to submit your forms as it will

be submitted to the printer that day, and no

revisions can be made.

RABBI’S REFLECTIONS “Shanah Torah – A Year of Study” (continued)

and reaffirm its centrality in our lives. We will do so in a

number of ways, the most dramatic of which will be

learning about and taking part in the creation of a sefer

Torah, an actual scroll, which will be written by a scribe

in Jerusalem over the course of the year. We are

grateful to Jan Charman and his family for sponsoring

the writing of this scroll, in memory of Jan’s wife

Estelle. We will conclude the Shanah Torah with a

community-wide celebration at which we complete the

writing of the sefer Torah and formally install it in the

beit midrash.

But there is much more. In order to engage every

member of our community in the Shanah Torah, we will

offer special Adult Education Classes, Movie Nights

and learning-centered social events. In addition to the

Hebrew Literacy, Torah and Talmud classes taught by

our volunteer teachers, I will be teaching a number of

formal courses throughout the year at different times of

the day and days of the week, on a range of subjects

related to Torah. At Movie Nights, Rabbi Lifshitz and I

will moderate discussions of the themes and values

embedded in the films we screen. At regular communal

dinners, we will share words of Torah. We will also

open a new cohort of Adult B’nei Mitzvah, a two year

course of study for serious adult learners. My goal is to

make daily learning of and about Torah a standard

feature our synagogue experience, and for us to then

take that experience out of the shul into every space

we inhabit.

Torah is much more than a fixed set of texts. It is

the foundation of our history and identity, as well as our

connection to every other Jew past, present and future.

The early rabbis instituted regular Torah readings on

Shabbat, Mondays and Thursdays. They compared

hearing its words to drinking water; just as we cannot

sustain ourselves more than three days without water,

we cannot live as Jews for three days without words of

Torah. It is our very life.

I look forward to helping each of you deepen your

knowledge of and love for Torah in these and other

ways over the course of the year, and as we approach

the High Holidays, I wish you a Shanah Tovah (a good

year) in our Shanah Torah (year of Torah).

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

MISSION STATEMENT

Congregation Beth Judea is a

welcoming, egalitarian synagogue

whose mission is to create a warm

and inviting home that serves the

lifelong spiritual, educational and

fellowship needs of our members.

Consistent with the principles of the

Conservative Movement, we

embrace Torah and our responsibility

to serve and support the greater

Jewish community, the community at

large, the United States of America

and the State of Israel.

I WANT A DO-OVER When my kids were young, we were a JCC family. They went to JCC preschool and to JCC camps. When they said they wanted to try a different camp, I went and toured the area camps, Jewish and secular. I visited Camp Ramah in Wheeling, and because of my own mishagas felt it was “too Jewish.” I was afraid. I was afraid that my kids would challenge me about my level of (non)observance. I was afraid that they would ask questions for which I would not have the answers.

This was a mistake. A big mistake.

I had the opportunity to visit Camp Ramah this week and to see our CBJ kids at play. While I thought the facilities were great—they were well-maintained, well-stocked, and well-staffed—I was impressed with the integration of Judaism into everyday life. The approach was subtle, not cramming religion down their throats. Some Hebrew here, some Hebrew there. I sat in on two teffilah, one for 5 and 6 year olds and one for 5th and 6th graders. Let me first say that their Music Director is phenomenal! Putting that aside, this thought is a bit difficult to articulate, but everything felt light. Maybe it was the beauty of the children’s voices, maybe it was the guitar, but the kids were truly happy to be participating in Jewish ritual. They were participating, at times showing off for their counselors, and they were engaged. Nothing felt forced, didactic, or rote. It was inspiring.

I know that we have all heard that our kids are our future. I think this is especially true at Congregation Beth Judea. With the demographics of our shul and our community skewing older, and the trends in Conservative Judaism, it is more important than ever to encourage our youngsters to learn, to participate, to lead. It’s heartwarming to hear these little voices gain strength. It’s hopeful.

Now to my big mistake. My “babies” are 18 and leaving for college next month. Although I know that they identify themselves as Jewish, and I know that they connect with Israel, I believe that they feel more culturally Jewish, than religiously Jewish. I believe that this religious component makes for a stronger identity. I can only hope that the decisions that we made are enough to allow them to stand tall and proudly Jewish in the larger world.

Dear Beth Judea Family-

We’re back!!! While it is hard to imagine, we are going to be kicking off another amazing year in our Beth Judea youth department in just a few short weeks. The newly elected BJUSY board has been hard at work planning an exciting year, and I can’t wait to get started. We are still accepting applications for BJUSY General Board, so make sure to get those in if you would like to be part of the planning for an awesome BJUSY year. This coming year we are going to continue our new teen minyanim one Saturday morning each month. starting October 18th . We would love to hear your suggestions on what themes people are interested in for a teen minyan. In addition to our teen minyanim we are going to continue our outstanding programming throughout the year. The new year kicks off Sunday August 17th with the USY vs. Men’s Club softball game and congregation Block Party. This event has gotten bigger and bigger the last couple of years, and we would love to see a huge turnout from the community. Regardless of whether you are in USY or Men’s Club or not, you should come on by and enjoy the warm weather with friends and family. The game is also a blast to watch. More details on time and location will be in your inbox soon. For our USYers, the first Tuesday program will be August 26th. Our Kadima and Kadinkers groups will have their first program, a trip for apple picking, in mid-September. MEN’S CLUB

The Word July-August 2014 Page 17

Men’s Club strives to offer something for everyone. As such, we’re always open to new and creative programming ideas that help Jewish men lead rich and filling Jewish Lives.

Congregation Beth Judea’s Men’s Club has been

very active this summer. Our softball team, led by

Allen Harris, has played several games against other

synagogues in a six team league. Although this is

only our rookie season, the turnout has been great

and the games fun. The team picture is posted

below. If you are interested in playing please contact

Allen Harris. A postseason game will be played

against the CBJ USY team during the annual USY--

‐Men’s Club softball game held during the Beth

Judea Block Party August 17.

Men’s Club members continue to volunteer at the

Lieberman Center Home in Skokie, IL every fourth

Shabbat morning. We assist the residents to and

from services and assist as needed during the

Shabbat service. This is a wonderful opportunity for

Men’s Club members as well as any anyone else

interested to help others. Contact Jerry Sakol or Ron

Friedman for more information.

The 19th Annual Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing

will be held on Sunday August 24 at the Buffalo

Grove Golf Club. Jack was a founding member of

Congregation Beth Judea and a dynamic member of

Men’s Club, Ritual Committee, and Board of

Directors. He loved music and sang in the

synagogue choir. His strong work ethic, good nature,

and terrific sense of humor were an inspiration to

those who knew him. The Golf Outing supports the

Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Fund and the Men’s

Club. The Golf Outing includes a golf cart, golf, and

summertime BBQ. Contact Chuck Walcer or Marty

Rizman for more information.

Future events planned this fall include Project Isaiah,

Building the Sukkah, and Steak and Scotch Under

the Sukkah. Hebrew Literacy One class, jointly

sponsored by the Men’s Club and Adult Education,

will also begin in the fall. This is a great opportunity

for those of you whose Hebrew skills are lacking or

need to be refreshed.

As the newly installed President of CBJ Men’s Club,

I want to congratulate our new officers: Allen Harris,

VP Programming; Brian Schwartz, Treasurer; Louis

Rabin, VP Ritual; Jerry Sakol, Secretary; Directors

Rob Lipka, Ron Friedman and Maynard Hirsch.

Lastly a hearty “yasher koach” to our immediate past

The Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Fund of Congregation Beth Judea was established by his family and many friends following his passing in January 1996. Jack was a founding member of Congregation Beth Judea, a dynamic member of its Men’s Club, Ritual Committee and board of Directors. He was also a steady force within the synagogue choir and was devoted to the Jewish music with which he was raised. He was loved and respected by all for his strong work ethic, his terrific sense of humor, his good nature and positive outlook on life. Over the years, the Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Fund has underwritten a series of wonderful concerts, open to the entire community. The Golf Outing was started to support this fund and its efforts.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . .

If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth,

engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about

it so that this milestone can be included in The Word.

If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would

like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be

said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the

Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of

assistance.

If there is a death in your family, we would like to know

about it so that we can offer our support, can share this

information with our congregation, and so that we can

add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

Please call the synagogue office with this information.

Do not assume that someone else will have notified the

synagogue staff.

Experiencing a divorce can be one of the most difficult and stressful transitions in life, affecting adults, children, and extended family.

We are reaching out as a synagogue community to those who are in the process of divorcing, or have recently gone through a divorce, to offer support at this extremely stressful time.

This group, designed for both men and women, would meet weekly with our member Ellene Lammers, a trained therapist, and Rabbi Pivo.

Please contact: Ellene at [email protected] or

Rabbi Pivo at [email protected] for further information.

HESED COMMITTEE

A SPECIAL MESSAGE

“Its okay, the children aren’t affected” But what if you knew they were? Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue

by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well.

We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing.

Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions

expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
