2015 was a very successful year for the Westport Weston Family YMCA. We celebrated our one-year anniversary in the beautiful new Bedford Family Center facility, while continuing our legacy of serving the community for the past 92 years. This long history has allowed the Westport Weston Family YMCA to carry out our mission of enriching members’ lives by developing and nurturing youth, promoting healthy living for all and fostering a sense of social responsibility.

During the year, the YMCA continued living our cause by showing a steady growth in membership and allowing individuals to realize their potential for healthy living. The largest growth was in family memberships. Families were able to spend time together plus watch their children learn new skills in swimming, sports, dance and gymnastics or by making new friends in Kids’ Club.

Camp Mahackeno was back at home last year and the highlight of the summer for many. Over 200 campers attended each day, developing new friendships, fishing, canoeing, learning new games like gaga and enjoying just being kids. One girl told her mom that her cheeks hurt at the end of the day because she smiled so much.

Many hours of work have been contributed by our Board members to ensure that the bequest from the estate of YMCA Trustee Emeritus, Ruth Bedford, will allow the Westport Weston Family YMCA to continue fulfilling its mission and goals for generations to come. The Board of Trustees set aside $5M of the bequest to develop the Bedford Family Social Responsibility Fund that will focus on giving support to community needs outside of existing YMCA programs. A standing committee has been established to develop the direction and guidelines for the fund, and to select grant recipients annually.

In November, the YMCA accepted the unique opportunity to purchase the property known as the Red Barn located at 290 Wilton Road. This will be a long-term investment that will allow us to preserve the neighborhood and, ultimately, use the property for the benefit of our members and the community.

Thank you to the generous donors to our 2015 Annual Campaign! We raised over $187,000 that will assist those with financial constraints who rely on support from the Y for scholarships and financial assistance, making it possible for children, families and adults to have access to Y programs that improve their lives.

We would like to thank our interim CEO, Phil Dwyer, for assisting us during the first half of 2015. We would also like to thank Pat Riemersma who took over as CEO in June. Our many successes this year are a direct result of their outstanding leadership and excellent work with our staff.

We are grateful for our wonderful volunteers, donors and our loyal members. We consider every one of you an important member of our Y family.

President, Board of Directors Chairman, Board of Trustees

Contributors to the Annual Campaign, through December 31, 2015To ensure access for all who want to participate in programs, camps, classes and activities, the Family YMCA, a charitable nonprofit organization with a 501(c) 3 tax status, provides financial assistance to individuals and families unable to afford membership or program fees. And we collaborate with social services organizations in the area to extend the benefits of Family YMCA membership and programming to all segments of the community.

Not all of our costs are covered by membership and program fees, so through our Annual Campaign we rely on the generosity of our members and supporters to help us to fulfill our obligations in the community.
