THE YAFTA ACTING FOR SCREEN DIPLOMA

The YAFTA Acting for Screen Diploma is an 18 month, part time, blended learning course to undertake intensive training to equip you with the necessary tools and experience to progress from beginner to professional actor within 18 months.

This course has been designed to work alongside mainstream education, careers and family life to allow those who are passionate about pursuing a career as a screen actor to do so with a reputable company without too much disruption to daily life.

Our students follow a structured syllabus which has been designed by a team of graduates from the world’s top drama schools including; RADA, LAMDA, Central School of Speech and Drama, ALRA and LIPA, and Occupational and Business Psychologists who specialise in assessment and selection, specifically, the design and delivery of examination processes.

This is a blended learning course requiring 3 full contact days per month, which run on either Saturdays, Sundays or

Mondays at our studio in Leeds. In addition to homework set by tutors, there is a distance learning aspect of the course which must be completed.

Throughout the course, students will work on developing their craft as well as their industry skills knowledge and experience. Students will be required to pass the YAFTA Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Certifications in Screen Acting to be able to achieve the full diploma award.

In addition to this, students will be mentored throughout the course. Your mentor will guide you through the industry aspects of the course to ensure that you are Spotlight ready upon completion of the course. You mentor will advise you of the next steps that you need to take throughout the course to enable you to start working as a professional actor.

In the final semester, students will start preparing their final short film which will be shot, edited and screened at the End of Year Showcase event.

ALEC ROBINSONDID THE COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

The course so far has definitely met and gone beyond my expectations. As an actor I enjoy to be stretched and challenged each week and YAFTA certainly does this with what I feel is a carefully designed syllabus for us to follow. I feel although there are many schools out there, there are only a select few that will invest the time into you by always letting you know what can be improved upon and giving you the motivation and knowledge to get to the next level. YAFTA so far is doing this for me.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE YAFTA DIPLOMA?

The best thing about the YAFTA diploma is that through its teaching it manages to cover each aspect of the acting industry, this allows you to feel prepared for whatever situation might arise and also makes you able to realise which aspects you might need to work on, causing you to become pro-active about your own career and builds your appetite for the industry. Even the business side is covered in the teaching which is extremely important for today’s actors but gets neglected at most schools. The structured personal mentoring plans are also great if you utilise them to keep on top of your progress and career.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO PEOPLE WANTING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE ACTING INDUSTRY?

I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to succeed in the acting industry and who is willing to put in the hard work. YAFTA will prepare each student as best they can to work in the industry and deal with challenges that face actors today. Since training at YAFTA I have been able to step out of my comfort zone and play roles I may not have been able to play in the past. I have also become even more proactive over my own career and have seen my appetite for success grow even greater.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE TEACHING STAFF AT YAFTA?

The teaching staff at YAFTA are all very committed to their work, with each one bringing carefully structured lesson plans every week. They always create a pressure free and enjoyable but hard working atmosphere to the classes enabling you to deliver your best work and get the most out of each week.

HAVE YOU MANAGED TO SECURE ANY WORK SINCE STARTING YAFTA?

I only started the course 5 months ago but since starting at YAFTA I have managed to land some short film roles. The roles I have played have been enjoyable yet challenging and I feel the training I have has put me in a good place to tackle these roles. I have very recently signed with the YAFTA Talent Agency and I am looking forward to seeing what this may bring and hopefully securing more exciting roles in the future.

RYAN CARRDID THE COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

The course has exceeded my expectations. When I first started at YAFTA I was pleasantly surprised by the positive outlook from staff and students and knew I’d be able to grow as an actor in such a good environment. I also like how the syllabus is so varied that with each new week, there is always something new to learn!

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE YAFTA DIPLOMA?

The best thing about the YAFTA Diploma is the ongoing support from staff and students, it is such a good feeling to know that everyone has your back and wants you to succeed in this industry. In addition to this, it is great to have the opportunity to meet some of the casting directors and directors who work in the industry.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO PEOPLE WANTING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE ACTING INDUSTRY?

I would definitely recommend this course to people wanting to pursue a career in the acting industry! Not only does YAFTA provide an intensive education on acting performance but they also provide an insight into the business side of becoming an actor which I think is definitely beneficial especially as many acting schools do not deliver business insight like YAFTA does.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE TEACHING STAFF AT YAFTA?

The teaching staff at YAFTA are very welcoming and supportive. They always offer constructive criticism and feedback tailored to individuals which is good when noticing your weaknesses and finding techniques and methods to make them strengths.

HAVE YOU MANAGED TO SECURE ANY ACTING WORK SINCE STARTING AT YAFTA?

Since starting YAFTA in September, I have secured an array of supporting roles in short films. I have also recently secured my first featured role on ‘Autopsy - The Last Hours Of’ which would not have been possible without the training and support from YAFTA.

MARK DELMONTEDID THE COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

The YAFTA diploma has helped me understand the difference between stage and screen acting and whilst I am not even halfway through the experience I have gained has helped me considerably in all areas of my life. I am a more confident, focussed individual since starting the course and expect this trend to continue right the way through to becoming a professional actor. I have learnt so much and met some amazing people in the seven months since starting and am very happy with my decision to do so.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE YAFTA DIPLOMA?

Being able to confidently apply for roles advertised on the recommended casting websites and learning more about the profession.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO PEOPLE WANTING A CAREER IN THE ACTING INDUSTRY?

Without a doubt. As someone who has spent several years wanting to break in to full time acting without knowing how to do so this course puts you in direct touch with your dreams.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE TEACHING STAFF AT YAFTA?

The teaching staff at YAFTA are all very warm, friendly and approachable. They always push you towards excellence with tact, honesty and enthusiasm. You know that they are always rooting for you.

HAVE YOU MANAGED TO SECURE ANY ACTING WORK SINCE STARTING AT YAFTA?

Since starting with YAFTA I have managed to secure few roles including a Masters project where I played the single parent father of a schoolgirl still looking for her Mum (My wife) after she was lost in a space mission. I performed opposite a professional actress and learnt a lot.

SOPHIE MARTINDID THE COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

Previous to starting on the diploma course I was already attending the Wednesday night evening classes in Leeds city centre. I decided that I wanted to really pursue my career in acting, I had already been offered to study at a drama school in New York but after thinking it through I went with my gut instinct and applied for the YAFTA diploma programme. The diploma has taught me more in the first 8 months of the course than what I could have expected to learn anywhere else. It teaches you everything about the industry; the business, techniques, audition techniques, vocal coaching, psychological resilience - basically everything.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE YAFTA DIPLOMA?

The best thing about the diploma is how unique it is, I know a lot of people that have gone to full time drama schools for a number of years and haven’t had the same learning experience as us. You’re put in front of people in the industry with teachers, casting workshops and master classes who teach you what to expect when you’re out there working.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO PEOPLE WANTING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE ACTING INDUSTRY?

I’d recommend this course for people wanting to pursue a career in acting, it’s a lot of hard work and dedication but it pays off when you see the results, watching your own and your classmates work to see how far everyone has come is so rewarding.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE TEACHING STAFF AT YAFTA?

The teachers push you to get the best out of your ability, this the first environment I’ve learnt in where you can see they really want you to do well and you're not just treated like a number. They take you out of your comfort zone and mentor you to put you in the right direction. Since starting the course I’ve really started to build up my CV. I’ve obtained real industry experience with auditions, self tapes and recently was cast by one of the biggest casting directors in the UK for a role in a major feature film. I’d tell anyone thinking of applying to go for it - I haven’t looked back since!

JANE WILLIAMSDID THE COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS ?

I am so pleased I chose YAFTA when I was looking to pursue a professional qualification in acting. The course has more than exceeded my expectations.

The diploma is run in a very professional way with a really concise and thorough syllabus.

In only a few months I have become totally immersed in the training that is offered.

I’ve found the course to be really informative but also fun.

The diploma covers all aspects of the business ensuring you not only develop as an actor but you also gain the necessary business knowledge and psychological awareness to succeed in the industry.

There are some amazing opportunities to participate in masterclasses with some of the leading industry professionals.

You are mentored throughout the course to ensure you have the best possible chance of success and when I’ve had doubts or questions about the work outside of the lesson days I’ve always had help from the mentoring team.

It’s a really well designed course.

The quality of the teaching is one of the outstanding things about YAFTA. I've found it to be such a great opportunity to be taught by a team of really inspirational people. The tutors have all graduated from some of the best drama schools and everyone has a genuine passion for the business.

We always know we are going to work hard in our lessons but the teaching is done in a very encouraging and inspiring manner and we always leave eager for the next session.

There is always time for personal feedback and I feel that I’ve really developed because of this .

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THE COURSE TO PEOPLE LOOKING TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY ?

I would highly recommend the course to anyone looking to pursue a career in the industry. As a "more mature" student I was anxious that I may not fit the regular profile and would feel out of my comfort zone but this hasn’t been the case! YAFTA encourages a diverse mix of students in age and backgrounds, I’ve met some lovely people and made some great friends!

There is a real united family feel within the organisation.

The course structure offers the opportunity to train to a highly professional level alongside maintaining family / work commitments, it’s because of this I''ve been able to follow my ambitions without too much disruption to my daily life.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE TEACHING STAFF?

The tutors are simply exceptional! It’s refreshing to have a small mix of tutors each with specialist knowledge. Our tutors all have different styles but each one has a real passion for acting and this is really great to experience as a student . It has really had an impact on my ability to develop and my determination to improve.

HAVE YOU MANAGED TO SECURE ANY WORK YET?

I am only 5 months into my diploma but with the help of the mentoring team in that short time I am now in a position to secure roles.

I feel very proud to state YAFTA on my applications. I know I am receiving some of the very best training available and that industry professionals hold YAFTA in high regard.

HOLLY ALLENDID THE COURSE MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

It exceeded my expectations. The YAFTA Diploma course allowed me to gain confidence. It’s fun, effective and challenging and has helped me prepare for future roles. As the youngest in the group I felt a little out of my depth walking in on the first day, I admit I even felt a little shy to even try and interact but everyone welcomed me as an equal and my age wasn’t an issue. I have definitely made friends for life.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE YAFTA DIPLOMA?

I’m always learning something new and exciting. The diploma has helped me to gain experience in front of the camera and share my experiences with like minded people who want to act. I enjoy learning from them too, receiving feedback and I love that everyone encourages me to challenge myself. I’ve also learned so many crucial ‘tricks of the trade’.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE ACTING INDUSTRY?

Yes, definitely. It’s made me feel I can achieve my dream of being a professional actress. The course is very well structured and sessions are very varied. Some of the masterclasses provide the opportunity to meet up with casting directors to ask those burning casting questions about the industry.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE TEACHING OF THE YAFTA STAFF?

The staff are brilliant. Each person brings individual and unique skills to our sessions. They are supportive and friendly and we have such a great time learning from them. We have a good laugh too but it’s always kept professional they are all very approachable and offer great advice. Most importantly they are realistic about the industry.

HAVE YOU MANAGED TO SECURE ANY WORK SINCE STARTING YAFTA?

I’ve attended lots of auditions and filmed a number of self-tapes, all for mainstream roles, which has been great experience, I’ve also filmed for the YAFTA course which will be a great addition to my profile.
