For our Summer Season 2013, the Theatre Royal Bath is delighted to present four new in-house productions.

Trevor Nunn, one of the foremost directors of his generation and previously Director of both the RSC and National Theatre, directs Noel Coward’s Relative Values, starring Patricia Hodge, Caroline Quentin and Rory Bremner; Simon Godwin directs Bernard Shaw’s romantic comedy Candida, with Charity Wakefield, Jamie Parker and David Troughton; Lucy Bailey directs Shakespeare’s King Lear starring David Haig, and Lindsay Posner and Cal McCrystal direct Feydeau’s hilarious farce, A Little Hotel on the Side with 2013 Olivier Award winner, Richard McCabe, in the lead.

most popular comedy performers join forces in one of Noël Coward’s most successful comedies. Set in the early 1950s, Relative Values is about the uproarious culture clash between the glittering world of Hollywood

and the stiff upper lip of the English aristocracy.

There is consternation at Marshwood House when the young Earl announces he is to marry a Hollywood film actress, but the family is well

and truly flummoxed when it comes to light that the starlet’s sister is none other than Moxie, the Earl’s mother’s maid....

Patricia Hodge’s credits include Dandy Dick, His Dark Materials and she plays Miranda’s mother in Miranda.Caroline Quentin has twice won the British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actress. Rory Bremner is one

of the UK’s leading impressionists and comedians. They will be joined by Steven Pacey, Olivier-nominated for By Jeeves; Katherine Kingsley,

Olivier-nominated for Piaf and Singing in the Rain and Ben Mansfield, who will be remembered by Bath audiences as Hotspur in Peter Hall’s five star

productions of Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 in the 2011 Peter Hall Season.

The Reverend James Morell is a genial, popular man of forty, robust and good-looking. He is a first rate clergyman, worshipped by the young curate and secretary who work for him. His rousing

sermons muster an enthusiastic congregation and he is in demand as a speaker from organisations ranging from the Hoxton Freedom Group to the English Land Restoration League.

Reverend Morell is most blessed in his wife. Candida, too is in her prime, with the double charm of youth and motherhood and clever enough to make the most of her attractions.

The Reverend’s life is thrown into turmoil when a beautiful eighteen year-old poet, Eugene Marchbanks, enters the family home one day, and declares that not only is he in love with Candida,

but that he has reason to believe that his feelings are reciprocated…

in this exuberant romantic comedy, Shaw’s own favourite, questions of love and loyalty are explored in a brilliant fusion of wit, passion and politics.

Charity Wakefield’s television credits include the BBC’s Sense and Sensibility and Casualty 1909. On stage she appeared in The Cherry Orchard at the National Theatre; Jamie Parker played Prince Hal in

Henry VI Parts 1 and 2 and Henry V at Shakespeare’s Globe and starred in the orginal production of The History Boys; David Troughton will be remembered by Bath audiences for his starring role in the

hugely successful production of Alan Bennett’s Enjoy; Frank Dillane played Tom Marvolo Riddle in the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Simon Godwin is an Associate Director of the Royal Court. in 2010 he was nominated for an Evening Standard Award for Best Newcomer for Nick Payne’s Wanderlust at the Royal Court Theatre.

in Bath and subsequently in the West End, David Haig returns to Bath to take on the greatest role in Shakespeare’s canon. David Haig is joined by an extraordinary cast which includes Fiona Button,

David Ganly, Fiona Glascott, Simon Gregor, Aislin McGuckin and Paul Shelley,who have worked extensively for the RSC, National Theatre and in the West End.

The ageing King Lear rewards his two oldest daughters with his kingdom when they flatter him with false praise. But his youngest daughter, Cordelia, confesses simply to love him and is banished. Too

late to realise his mistake, and forced from power by his offspring, an increasingly impotent and frail Lear descends into madness.

Lucy Bailey is one of the UK’s most exciting directors who has worked extensively with Shakespeare’s Globe and the Royal Shakespeare Company for whom her recent productions have included The

Taming of the Shrew and The Winter’s Tale.

The production is designed by William Dudley, one of Britain’s most prolific and revered theatre designers and, extraordinarily, the winner of seven Olivier Awards.

than the beds - in a completely hilarious evening of mistaken identities and sexual innuendo.

Set in 19th century Paris, Monsieur Pinglet and his neighbour’s wife, Marcelle, attempt to get their affair underway by discreetly taking a room at an obscure hotel. But far from the quiet evening of

amour they had anticipated, they encounter half of Paris here, including most of their relatives and the inspector of Public Morality!

Richard McCabe, playing Monsieur Pinglet, comes to Bath direct from winning an Olivier Award for his role as Harold Wilson in one of the West End’s biggest hits of recent years, The Audience, opposite

Dame Helen Mirren. His many credits with the RSC include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, Othello and The Winter’s Tale and he also starred in the West End in Yes, Prime Minister.

A Little Hotel on the Side will be directed by one of the UK’s greatest directors of comedy, Lindsay Posner, whose productions of Abigail’s Party and Noises Off were huge West End successes in 2012 and by Cal McCrystal who was responsible for directing the glorious physical comedy in One Man,

Two Guvnors in the West End and on Broadway. The production is designed by Michael Taylor, whose extraordinary set for the West End production of The Ladykillers received an Olivier Award nomination.

This autumn the Ustinov Studio presents its most innovative and ambitious season to date....

The Spanish Golden Age Season will bring to the stage three brand new translations of rarely-seen plays from the last unopened treasure-chest of world drama. This is a signifi cant cultural event in the UK and a major innovation in the history of Golden Age translation and performance.

Nise and Finea are famous beauties. Their father, Don Octavio, a wealthy businessman, is doing his best to marry them off and an exotic collection of determined young suitors are competing for the prizes. The sticking point? Nise, the elder sister, is too clever for her own good, whilst younger sister Finea is notoriously stupid.

Can the family hide Finea’s shortcomings long enough to hoodwink a suitor into marriage? Surely the combination of a dancing master and a huge dowry will do the trick? The ploy is more successful than anyone might have anticipated…

A Lady of Little Sense is a big-hearted and hilarious romantic comedy which celebrates the power of love.

Laurence Boswell is the Artistic Director of the Ustinov Studio and an Artistic Associate of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is one of the world’s leading experts on the Spanish Golden Age period and won an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre for the Spanish Golden Age Season he staged at London’s Gate Theatre.

David Johnston is a multi award-winning translator for the stage who has worked with Laurence Boswell on previous much-acclaimed productions.

Don Gil of the Green Breeches is an exuberant comedy which blends mistaken identity, role-reversal, ghosts, and green trousers.

Dona Juana has fallen for the oldest trick in the book. The dashing Don Martin, the man she thought she was going to marry, has left her for the wealthy Dona ines. But Dona Juana is not the sort of woman to take this lying down…

She pulls on a pair of green breeches and sets off to Madrid in hot pursuit of Don Martin, assuming the same name he is using to woo his new lover - a strategy which will either cause a change of heart or complete chaos...

Written by Tirso de Molina, this deliciously anarchic and original comedy has been translated by Sean O’Brien, an award-winning English poet, critic and playwright. His prizes include the Somerset Maugham Award, the Cholmondeley Award, the Forward Poetry Prize and the T. S.Eliot Prize.

Director Mehmet Ergen co-founded London’s Arcola Theatre in 2000. it is now one of the most respected arts venues in the UK. His many awards include the Time Out Award for Outstanding Achievement, two Peter Brook Empty Space Awards and a Time Out Award for Best Fringe Production.

Punishment without Revenge is a dark and thrilling drama, an audacious blend of unbearable tension and delicious comedy, which both terrifi es and delights.

Regarded as the greatest tragedy of the Spanish Golden Age and the fi nest play of its presiding genius, Lope de Vega, this elegant work is set in the dangerous and glamorous world of Renaissance italy.

The Duke of Ferrara has lived a wild and unconventional life. An infamous womaniser, his only son, Federico, is a bastard whom he dreams will one day succeed him. When his subjects demand that he marry and provide them with the stability of a legitimate heir, the

proud and beautiful Cassandra, Duchess of Mantua, is sent to be his bride.

But everything does not fall happily into place.

A passionate love develops - but not between the Duke and his Duchess - and, in a culture where honour is the highest virtue, there can be only one outcome…

Punishment Without Revenge is directed by the Usinov Studio’s Artistic Director, Laurence Boswell. The Spanish Golden Age has been his lifelong passion and he has been translating and directing award-winning plays from this era for more than thirty years.

The country’s two leading regional theatres - Theatre Royal Bath and Chichester Festival Theatre - combine to produce a new production of one of the most significant plays of the last fifty years.

When Julian Mitchell’s Another Country opened in the West End in 1982 it created a sensation, heralded a resurgence of great British drama, inspired a film, and launched the careers of Rupert Everett, Kenneth Branagh, Daniel Day Lewis and Colin Firth.

in the 1930s at an English public school, Bennett and Judd are both outsiders; one coming to terms with his sexuality, the other already a committed Marxist. But the Establishment has traditional ways of dealing with rebels and when a scandal rocks the school, the young men must confront their beliefs and make choices which will have a momentous impact on their lives.

Rising star, Will Attenborough, who played Gloucester in Richard Eyre’s acclaimed production of Henry IV for BBC, plays Judd.

Julian Mitchell balances subtle wit with thought-provoking drama in this fictionalised account of the youth of such people as the spy Guy Burgess

and the Communist John Cornford, who died in the Spanish Civil War.

Julian Mitchell adapted The Welsh Boy in 2012 and Ford Maddox Ford’s The Good Soldier in 2010, both in the Ustinov Studio. His plays include After Aida and his screenplays include August, Wilde, Vincent and Theo and Arabesque, as well as the film adaptation of Another Country starring Rupert Everett and Colin Firth in their first film roles.

Jeremy Herrin directed David Hare’s South Downs for Chichester’s Festival 2011 and in the West End. Other credits include This House for the National Theatre, Much Ado About Nothing for Shakespeare’s Globe, and the forthcoming Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies for the RSC.

The Private Ear and the Public Eye is an early hit from Peter Shaffer, the multi award-winning author of Amadeus, Equus, The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Lettice & Lovage and Five Finger Exercise.

When the show became a hit in the West End and Broadway in 1962 it made stars out of a young Kenneth Williams and Maggie Smith. This will be the first major revival in fifty years of these intimate one-act plays. Both short and bitter-sweet comedies are performed as a matching pair on the same night, giving a fascinating window into the changing attitudes to love in the sixties through a brilliant combination of comedy, pathos and drama.

The Private Ear is set in a musky London bedsit, where reclusive Bob, normally used to giving his full attention to his record collection, calls in a favour from Ted, his slick, confident friend, to help him treat his date, the beautiful but shy Doreen, to a slap up meal.

The Public Eye takes place in a swanky London accountancy office, where uptight Charles is confronted by Julian, an eccentric private

detective hired by Charles to investigate his young wife’s suspected infidelity.

Bob expects help. Charles expects proof. But in this darkly comic double-bill nothing is as it seems.

Venice, Queen of the Seas and centre of a vast trading empire, was also the origin of opera as we know it – a mixture of music and drama, nobles and comics, senses and spirit.

English Touring Opera’s 2013 visit to Bath features two operas written for Venice by composers of musical genius and theatricality.

The Coronation of Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi

Love, power, morality, corruption… Monteverdi’s fi nal masterpiece, The Coronation of Poppea, is often described as his greatest achievement, combining mythic and very human themes, and featuring some of his most glorious music.

One of the fi rst operas to use historical events and people, it tells the story of Nero’s infatuation with the young and beautiful Poppea as she tries to make him divorce his wife Ottavia and take her as his new queen and empress of Rome.

Directed by James Conway and conducted by Michael Rosewell, The Coronation of Poppea is set in a world populated by ruthless and all-too-human characters where lust and ambition ultimately triumph over virtue.

Jason by Francesco Cavalli

Loosely based on the story of Jason and the Golden Fleece, Cavalli’s Jason was a runaway hit when it premiered in Venice in 1649, and it proved one of the most popular operas of the 17th century.

Like many operas from this period, the story uses classical myth as a starting point. The opera opens after Jason has abandoned his wife, isiphile, for the sorceress Medea. Cupid, protector of isiphile, intervenes on her behalf, sending Jason and a motley cast of characters on a rocky journey back to his family in Lemnos.

Cavalli’s dazzling score careens fl uidly between humour and pathos, intrigue and adventure. Witty, melodic and entertainingly decadent, this new production is directed by Ted Huff man and stars Hannah Pedley as Medea and Clint Van der Linde as Jason.

This autumn, Ashley Page, former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet, returns to Rambert with a world première. This striking new work is set to music by Aphex Twin and award-winning composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, whose recent collaborations include the Royal Opera House, ENO and BBC Proms.

Arresting, original and fevered in style, Barak Marshall makes his Rambert debut this October with another world première. This is a rare chance to see work by one of israel’s most celebrated choreographers.

Simon Callow is one of the UK’s favourite actors. François Billetdoux’ 1959 play was a huge hit on Broadway and in the West End, where the original production starred Celia Johnson and Anthony Quayle. it has been translated into 19 languages. in 1970 Billetdoux was accorded “classic” status when two of his plays entered into the repertory of the Comédie Française, the most respected theatre in France. He was also the winner of a Molière, France’s top theatre award.

Edward Hall is artistic director of Propeller Theatre Company and Hampstead Theatre where he recently directed the stage adaptation of Chariots of Fire. His production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which played in London in 2003, went on to play at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York in early 2004, where both he and the production

were nominated for Drama Desk Awards. His American production of Rose Rage won four Jeff Awards including Best Play, Best Director and Best Ensemble Cast. His work for television includes Spooks and Trial and Retribution.

Fiddler On The Roof is one of the most popular and beloved of all stage musicals, the longest-running production on Broadway for more than 13 years. This is a wonderful opportunity to see this great musical, starring the legendary American actor, Paul Michael Glaser, in the title role, directed by one of the UK entertainment industry’s greatest personalities, Craig Revel Horwood.

This new production, from the award-winning producers of The King and I and High Society, captures all the emotions of laughter and joy, tears and sadness. The show is filled to the brim with memorable and instantly-recognizable songs including If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker Matchmaker, Sunrise Sunset, To Life and many more.

Tevye, the local milkman in his village of Anatevka, has always stuck by his traditions but suddenly his head-strong daughters decide that they want to marry for love rather than accept whatever Yente the Matchmaker comes up with. Tevye loves his daughters but has to convince his wife, and the villagers, that their decisions are actually falling in with tradition – not an easy thing to do - but if anyone can do it, the wily Tevye can!

Paul Michael Glaser will play the lead role of Tevye. He was in the classic 1971 film version of

the musical (in the role of Perchik) but is best known for playing David Starsky in the iconic Starsky and Hutch television series for four seasons 1975 – 1979, opposite David Soul. Many other television credits include, most recently, Captain Jack Steeper in NBC’s Third Watch. On stage he has appeared in over 50 roles in regional, repertory, off-Broadway and Broadway theatre in the US. His film credits include Something’s Gotta Give alongside Diane Keaton.

This new production is directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, the nation’s favourite Strictly Come Dancing judge and master of the musical stage.

Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house’s sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. it is not until he glimpses a young woman dressed all in black at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black – and her terrible purpose.

Years later, as an old man, he recounts his experiences to an actor in a desperate attempt to exorcise the ghosts of the past. The play unfolds around the conversations of these two characters as they act out the solicitor’s experiences on Eel Marsh all those years ago.
