The challenge included competing against a pensioner (Kim) with his OAP bus pass. Each day, a target was set of where to get to and it would be a race against time to see who got there first. Overall the pensioner won, taking a grand total of 51 buses. Sponsorship is still coming in so the team is hopeful that this figure will increase.

Booksellers start Salisbury chapter Two ‘guerrilla’ booksellers have started the latest chapter in their bookselling saga. Business partners Jake Pumphrey and Nick Walsh have opened the fourth Last Bookshop in Salisbury.

The business partners currently run two bookshops in Oxford and opened another in Bristol earlier this year. They also run a wholesale business, Pumpkin Wholesale, from a warehouse in Oxfordshire.

The new bookshop in Butcher Row, Salisbury will sell good quality remainder books each for £5 or less.

The bookshops’ name is a rebuke to those who predicted the death of the book with the rise of the internet; the logo is a book in flames. All the Last Bookshops offer remainder books that might otherwise be destroyed, at an affordable price.

Bond Williams celebrates trading resultsBournemouth professional recruitment company Bond Williams has recently reached its seventh year of trading and has celebrated its best year ever.

Director Rob Bond says, ‘We have noticed a marked interest in the recruitment sector as a whole in the last couple of years. However, our success is not solely down to the local demand for quality professional candidates. Over the past couple of years we have stepped up our marketing, with brand-led campaigns including taking social media seriously. We have a very successful HR group on LinkedIn and utilise Twitter on a very regular basis. At the same time, we run regular HR seminars in the region, giving us the opportunity to connect with people face-to-face. We believe it requires a balance between the two. We have also upgraded our branding, launched a new website with integrated blog; all in the name of keeping people in the loop.’

While enjoying the fruits of its labour Bond Williams has also moved to bigger and more prominent premises in the heart of the Victorian town of Bournemouth.

Bond Williams is offering a ‘refer a friend’ scheme. Simply by providing new candidate names to a growing list of employee prospects, if that person then secures a new job with them, vouchers are issued as a gift.

Cutting the cost of office spaceWhen financial management company Milburn Finance found new premises that were just a little too big, rather than pass up the opportunity of moving into new offices in the perfect location, it joined forces with new business consultancy White Egret to share the space.

‘This is the ideal solution that suits both businesses,’ says Lesley Dixon, owner of Milburn Finance. The two businesses now share a 650 sq ft space in purpose-built offices on St Stephen’s Road in the centre of Bournemouth.

Green investments are a healthy

option…with tax reliefBy Mark Sekree, Co-Partner

E v e r y o n e k n o w s t h e o l d adage that only death and taxes are certain in life. Just like improvements to health, legitimate advances have been made on reducing tax burdens. It all comes down to investing wisely.

Low-risk investments are a popular choice given the current economic climate, yet many people do not realise that green industries have evolved from their risky investment beginnings.

The government encourages i n v e s t m e n t i n t a r g e t e d sustainable energy companies s u c h a s s o l a r p o w e r m a n u f a c t u r e r s . T h e y d o this through tax rebates on investment and by declaring r e t u r n s f r o m s o m e s u c h investments tax free.

Additionally, the qualifying period for inclusion in the schemes means investors have a fixed date at which point their initial investment should be paid back. These are generally just over three years for Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) undertakings, or five years for Venture Capital Trust (VCT) schemes.

Easy take-off for Worth Accountants

Sir Stelios Haji-loannou, owner of the easyGroup, has launched yet another attack on a small business that dared to use the word ‘easy’ as part of its brand.

Dorset-based accountant Steve Worth who has been trading as Easytax Accountants since 005 has been forced to rename his business after Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou threatened to take legal action.

‘In April we received a letter from solicitors acting for easyGroup, threatening legal action if we didn’t cease to use the name Easytax,’ says Steve.

‘They said that we should cease using the name and hand over the domain, promotional material and other commercially sensitive information within just seven days. I was shocked by the aggressive tone of the letter and very sad to think that our locally established brand was being unfairly compromised.’

easyGroup claimed an infringement of their rights under a registered Community Trade Mark. But Steve Worth says he has never attempted to pass Easytax Accountants off as part of the easyGroup.

‘The majority of people in the local business community associate Easytax Accountants with me and my wife Celia,’ he says.

Steve has therefore made a commercial decision to re-brand and avoid any further issues in connection with the easyGroup allegations.

‘We have received a lot of positive and supportive feedback from our clients and other professionals, during consultation over these allegations,’ says Steve.

The new look WORTH ACCOUNTANTS opened its new office on 5th July at 79 Ashley Road, Parkstone.

When the directors of Shamrock buses called me, it was clear the business could not be saved so my team began working immediately, taking personal charge of negotiations with the landlord, making staff redundant, speaking to the creditors and arranging to auction the buses.

The key to keeping costs down in an insolvent company is to do things right and to do things as quickly as possible, in this case we went from the point at which the company ceased trading to appointing Liquidators in just under four weeks.

But it’s not always about closing a business down. We visited one Poole businessman recently, who had been told he needed to shut down by no less than two Insolvency Practitioners, but we were able to help him find a way to trade through his financial problems.

My team at Mark Liddle LLP are available for a free consultation to any business owner or director facing difficulties, or to their advisers. I believe our approach is unique because, unlike a Licenced Insolvency Practitioner who has a legal duty to the creditors, we are completely independent. This means we work for the directors and owners of the business in trouble and look for ways of helping them to start again, helping them negotiate personal guarantees or wind up or sell the business in the most appropriate manner. You see, we’re different - we really do want to help the directors and owners of companies in difficulty in whatever way we can, because we care.

SOUTH WEST BUSINESSES ArE BUyING & SELLING AGAINThe south west’s business economy is springing back to life, with revived activity on company sales and acquisitions in the region. This is the view of corporate finance specialists at south west accountancy firm, Bishop Fleming, who are now working on ten major company transactions. The ‘credit crunch’ and the subsequent bank-paralysis, froze the market for company sales, but this ‘freeze’ is now thawing, according to Bishop Fleming.

Smart people like you…Smart Accountancy Systems Ltd has launched a revolutionary payroll solution called SmartPay which allows you to pay your staff from just £1 per payslip. With no year-end fees, software support contracts or hidden extras for starters or leavers this makes it a perfect product for businesses.

What makes this payroll different is that the whole process is handled online via the secure SmartPay portal. The labour intensity is reduced and the cost savings passed on to the customer. In essence the use of SmartPay will not only enhance the level of service received but it will give back management and staff time to concentrate on the key issues within their business. Cost savings in time, software support and stationery alone make this a perfect payroll solution.

Speaking about what has been a busy start for the service, Managing Director, Jon Jenkins commented, ‘We are very proud of what has been achieved to date. We have every intention of further enhancing the product and have some great ideas of how to take this forward. Our aim was to provide an easy to use, cost effective solution and I know we have achieved that.’

As the product is web-based demonstrations are very easy to set up, and with minimal staff training required you can be up and running very quickly. For further information or to see a demonstration visitwww.smartaccountancysystems.co.uk/smartpay or call 010 9.

and the opportunity to experience scuba diving in the show’s very own Try A Dive Tank.

Businesses from across the south, as well as those from the UK and abroad, are currently preparing to exhibit at the show, which acts as a vital sales platform.

Frank Dixie, Managing Director of PSP, which is the show’s title sponsor, said, ‘We are very much looking forward to this year’s event and are confident that it will provide many opportunities for our business.

‘Last year we formed several important relationships with big name companies that were formed during meetings held on-site. We are hoping to build on that success in this, our fourth year of sponsorship.’

European executives fear global impact of Eurozone instability Two-thirds of European business executives worry that instability in the eurozone will pose the most significant risk to the global economy in the next six months, according to a new survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Eurozone instability is a far greater concern to executives than other risk factors. Double-dip recession was seen as a concern by just 10% of respondents, followed by social and labour unrest, (6%), Middle East unrest, rising oil prices and interest rates, and financial market regulation (all %).

‘When we surveyed these executives one year ago, eurozone instability was barely on their risk radar—only 5% rated potential break-up of the eurozone as a concern, even though the Greek economy was already in meltdown,’ said Iain Scott, a Managing Editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit. ‘What might once have seemed like Europe’s problem is now very much viewed as a global concern. Eurozone instability is now also the biggest worry for executives in the Asia-Pacific region and even in the US.’

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s own risk forecast points out that the economic crisis has exposed serious weaknesses in the eurozone. Eurozone break-up is a relatively low probability, but if it occurred it would be hugely destabilising for the global economy - banks would be severely shaken and the US dollar would shoot up, choking US recovery and even affecting China, whose currency is tied to the dollar.

The global economy continues to slow, in response to shocks such as the price of oil and the fallout from the Japanese tsunami, but the Economist Intelligence Unit believes that this is still a ‘soft patch’ rather than a slide back towards recession.

Directors of owner managed businesses have become much more aware of the risks of wrongful trading. However, trading while insolvent and wrongful trading are often confused and in the continuing difficult trading conditions, it is worth focusing on the true meaning and risks of wrongful trading.

Wrongful trading is where, prior to the company going into insolvent liquidation, the director(s) knew or ought to have realised that there was no prospect of the company avoiding insolvent liquidation. Claims can only be brought by a liquidator who may apply to Court for an Order that a director is liable to make a contribution to the assets of the company. The Court is likely to make an order unless it is persuaded the director took every step he ought to have taken with a view to minimising the potential loss to creditors.

There are two tests for Insolvency defined within the legislation which can be broadly identified by asking two questions. (1) Do the company assets exceed the liabilities, and/or (2) Can the company pay its debts as they fall due eg the balance sheet test and cash flow test respectively. If the answer to either of these is ‘no’, then there is a strong likelihood the company is Insolvent.

The conduct of directors of companies in financial difficulty and actions taken by them at that time will be subject to scrutiny by the liquidator, with the benefit of hindsight. Directors can help themselves pass the wrongful trading test by taking reasonable steps which should include:

General conduct at all times

Ensuring that regular up to date financial information is available to the board Discussing that financial information regularly and acting upon any adverse trends shown Recognising and utilising the skills, knowledge and experience of individual board members Seeking and acting upon professional advice from the company’s accountants, lawyers and other specialist advisers Documenting strategic decisions and the broad reasons for these

Specific conduct once insolvency is identified

Not utilising customer deposits or Crown monies to finance trading Minimising new trade credit taken only to that necessary to preserve the business as a going concern Treating all creditors fairly and equally and not preferring specific creditors Preserving and protecting the assets of the business for the benefit of creditors in any future insolvent liquidation Seeking advice from an insolvency practitioner

Most businesses unprepared for ageing workforce, survey findsMore than half of small businesses are unprepared for having employees working beyond the traditional retirement age of 65, a survey has found. The default retirement age (DRA) will be abolished this autumn, with businesses no longer able to force staff to retire on their 65th birthday due to age alone. But just months before the new law comes into force, a survey by business support specialist, ELAS, found most SMEs were unaware of the practical impact the new law will have on many of their working practices.Of those businesses which currently offer death in service benefits or private health cover, some 57% did not realise that the cost of providing these would probably soar for those employees aged over 65.And 54% said they would no longer honour those staff benefits if costs rose, leaving staff reaching 65 having to accept potentially worse pay and conditions in order to stay in work. For more information about ELAS’s employment law services visit www.elas.uk.com

Success in a recession Dovetail Recruitment is celebrating its third birthday and has come a long way from a back room in Southbourne to the company’s new open plan offices in Gervis Road. It may be doom and gloom in the economy but Liz Davies, Managing Director, is excited about her next phase in developing Dovetail Recruitment.

With this expansion, Liz is launching a new website which will emphasise Dovetail’s four main divisions of expertise within permanent and interim recruitment. These divisions will cover sales and marketing, HR and office, accounts and finance, and technical and procurement.

Liz has built a strong team to work alongside her and as a result their dedication, commitment and understanding of clients needs has meant a loyal customer following.

‘Recruitment is not just about finding “the perfect fit”’, says Liz, ‘but also gaining an insight into clients’ businesses to have a greater understanding and relationship with them. A business is only as good as the staff they employ and so finding the right candidates to match the ethos of the business and ensuring longevity and commitment for the future, is paramount.’

Liz has over 0 years’ experience in recruitment locally and knows her clients well. She understands the highs and lows the challenges of recruitment bring and the continual growth of her own business shows she meets those challenges head on.

Within the new Dovetail website, Liz feels it is important to have an interactive blog for both clients and candidates to air their views and help solve and share their frustrations and problems. After all it is about working together towards success – there is no ‘i’ in team. She hopes the blog will bring exciting, innovative and challenging discussion to local recruitment.

Dovetail Recruitment is also working with Ellis Jones to provide clients with FREE quarterly HR forums to work together in dealing with the endless legalities of employing staff. Not all companies are big enough to warrant an HR department and will benefit hugely from these forums.

Exciting times for Dovetail and exciting times for Dovetail’s clients.

Finding a new job is no more difficult now than it was this time last year

Richard Goles of Towngate Personnel

Despite the economic doom and gloom, nearly 80% of candidates polled by Bournemouth-based recruitment company Towngate Personnel said the employment market was better or the same as 12 months ago.

‘We hear a lot about how tough things are, but these results suggest the people actually looking for work are finding opportunities available,’ says Towngate Managing Director Richard Goles.

‘It certainly backs up what we’ve found as a business over the last few months.’

Towngate, which specialises in supplying experienced staff and management to the hospitality industry, surveyed 157 candidates to ask why they were looking for a new job and their general impressions of the employment picture.

More than 0% (66 candidates) said they thought the jobs market was better than a year ago, with another 59 (8%) reporting no change.

Finding better prospects (1%) was the most common reason for candidates seeking a new job, although 16% were already out of

work. Of those, nearly 70% reported the jobs market was better or the same as last year.

‘Some people will find that figure surprising, but with 70% of the candidates that are out of work saying the jobs picture is no worse than last year there are signs that things might not be as bad as other reports suggest,’ says Richard Goles.

‘Even allowing for the seasonal nature of the hospitality industry, these figures make very encouraging reading.’

SOUTHERN ENTREPRENEURS START TO FEEL PUBLIC SECTOR PAINRSM Tenon’s Business Barometer, a quarterly survey of senior management in small and medium sized enterprises, found that 18% of entrepreneurs nationwide view the slash in government spending to be the greatest danger to their company. This figure is significantly higher than 1 months ago, when just 1% cited public sector cuts as the biggest threat, while both lack of cash flow and failure of government to address national debt were considered more pressing issues (with % and 0% citing these respectively).

In the south, 18% cited public sector cuts as the greatest threat their businesses faced.

Sandy Kinninmonth, Recovery Director at RSM Tenon in Bournemouth, said, ‘These figures highlight how the ripples created by the comprehensive spending review are beginning to reach all parts of the UK’s economy. Directly or indirectly, public sector cuts affect almost everybody – partly because many firms who supply publicly-funded bodies are losing contracts, and partly because redundancies in the public sector create uncertainty which has a dampening effect on overall consumer confidence.’

Most companies use e-mail marketing these days as it’s an extremely cost effective way to communicate with prospects and existing customers - and it’s easy to understand why.

To help you create an outstanding e-mail marketing campaign, here are 5 top tips from the LexisClick E-marketing team:

1. Personalise your e-mails. By simply starting your e-mail with ‘Hi [subscriber_name]’ instead of the boring ‘Hi there’, you can increase both your reading and click-thru rates enormously. This way your subscribers feel like they already have a relationship with you as you’ve addressed them by their first name.

2. Include multiple calls to action. What is it you want people to do after reading your e-mail – click on a link, visit your website? Make sure all roads lead logically to your call to action. Remember, if you confuse them, you lose them.

3. Integrate your e-mail marketing campaign with the rest of your online marketing activities. Include links to your social media sites as well as your blog. Your signature is a great place to do this. The more often you repeat your message the more powerful it becomes.

4. Write about one subject. People’s attention span online is short - about 8 seconds for

5 top tips to create an outstanding e-mail marketing campaign

the average e-mail. Work this to your advantage by only writing about one subject. Put the most important thing first, get to the point and be brief!

5. The Preview pane. Popular e-mail clients such as MS Outlook show a preview of an e-mail when it’s selected in your inbox. Always have some interesting content at the very top of your e-mail, as this is the part that will show in the preview window of your subscribers’ e-mail program. If it’s interesting enough, then your subscriber will open your e-mail and continue reading.

At LexisClick we offer two levels of service for e-mail marketing. If you’re happy to manage your own marketing, we offer self service access to a market leading e-mail marketing platform. Alternatively if you’d like to hand it over to someone else to manage we offer a fully managed campaign option for both your e-mails and e-newsletters. Prices start from only £19 per month.

Call us today on 010 788 for a chat to discuss how we can help you grow and develop your business.

HOT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN CYPRUSCyprus, a former English colony, has been a member of the EU since 2004 with the Euro as its currency. Tourism is predicted to grow by 4.6% over the next years, contributing some 13.9% to the country´s GDP by 2014. This is good news to investors looking for a ready market.

Cyprus has a British-based legal system, where English speaking lawyers abound. A British-based banking system makes choosing mortgages and managing your money similar to ‘back home’. Its low tax rate, including a Double Tax Treaty with the UK are attractions for investors. Capital Gains Tax is only 0% and Corporation Tax for Cypriot limited companies through which you can own your property stand at only 10%. Profit

from the sale of equities exempt from capital gains tax. There is no tax on profits of sale of private companies including investment properties and on overseas dividends and interest.

The lifestyle is relaxed with hot summers, warm winters and top-class golf courses. The cost of living is low and crime is non-existent. The excellent modern infrastructure, transport and telecommunications with millions of pounds being invested now throughout the island on roads, golf courses, hospitals, airports, and marinas, increase the potential growth of your investment making it all the more attractive.

Enthusiasm for the cloud on the waneEasynet Connect, an ISP supplying small businesses, is publishing a study which has uncovered evidence that cloud computing is losing some of its lustre for small businesses.

The study has found that a third (33%) of small companies have adopted some form of cloud computing, but a similar proportion (34%) said they have no plans to move into the cloud whatsoever. A similar study published by Easynet Connect in early 2010 found that a massive

73% of small businesses were planning to adopt cloud computing at some stage.

So what’s changed? The study found that an unwillingness to throw out existing IT infrastructure, and lack of awareness of the options available, were the key concerns small companies have. What’s more, half of the companies planning to adopt some kind of cloud computing admitted to not having a clear plan in place.

What’s the fuss with Google+Social media, the marketing engine that drives Internet business today, has a new player on the scene in the form of Google’s new social networking platform, Google+.

Ed Gould, Creative Director of integrated marketing communications agency Carswell Gould, explains what all the buzz is about as he shares his thoughts on the new site with The Independent Business Magazine.

He says, ‘Google+ allows individuals to share photos, messages and comments, it takes the best parts of Facebook and Twitter but adds tightened security and includes its own spin.’

Google+ is based on four key functions - Circles, Sparks, Hangouts and Huddles.

Circles - Similar to Facebook’s lists feature, but provides a simple interface to encourage users to sort their friends, colleagues and acquaintances into groups. Sparks - A feature that shows interesting articles on subjects that users choose. Members can then choose to share those articles to others within their circles who share a common interest. Hangouts - For spontaneous, live group video chats. It’s similar to Facebook’s recent pairing with Skype, however Google+ allows for multi-user video conferencing that permits friends to drop in and out of conversations, rather than Facebook’s 1:1 video chat. Huddles - Part of the Google+ mobile application. It’s group

instant messaging where, at the touch of a few buttons, you can start a conversation.

Ed adds, ‘Overall, the Google+ interface is in line with Google’s recent redesign rollout. It’s very slick and easy to use. The site ties in nicely with mobile and it has a much cleaner interface over the likes of Facebook and for this reason people will start to use Google+.’

Within the first few weeks Google+ had over 18,000,000 users sign up.

Currently the site doesn’t serve specific business pages, however rumor has it business profiles will be included to the platform around the third quarter of this

year. So now is the time to start understanding and using the system ready to make the most of its business features.

Carswell Gould helps companies across the South and the UK boost their business through the internet. It provides social media services, with everything from strategy and design and build of custom landing pages to content serving and evaluation. It also designs and builds websites, runs traditional communications and provides bespoke RSS feeds that can be used on Sparks. As the channels evolves, it will soon provide management for Google+ Business pages.

IS E-MAIL COSTING YOUR BUSINESS?

Dr Monica Seeley

Can your business afford to allow people to waste at least half a day a week? Inefficient use of e-mail costs most businesses at least half a day a week per employee. Additionally, there are often other costs such as lost business through e-mails not handled properly and legal fees from breaches of security and confidentiality.

Law firm warns businesses about new bribery legislation

How many employers know what AWr is?

Well, it stands for Agency Workers Regulations and it will affect all employers that utilise temporary staff from the 1st October 2011. Basically, the AWR means that employers that use temporary staff will, by law, have to ensure that the temporary staff are given equally treatment, including pay, as any permanent members of staff.

This includes access to staff facilities such as car parking, canteen arrangements, bonuses plus a range of other benefits. To complicate things further, there are age limits and length of service issues to take into account too all of which, if not managed properly, could result in heavy fines for the employer and the recruitment agency involved, if of course there is one.

Phil Harmsworth, a Director at The Work Shop recruitment agency based in Ringwood, thinks many employers in the area have not recognised the importance of these new regulations and are not preparing themselves for what could be a very demanding and time consuming exercise.

‘A lot of work has to be done before these regulations come in to ensure that temporary workers are indeed offered equal treatment otherwise employers could find themselves at Employment Tribunals and we all know how costly that can be,’ said Phil.

The Work Shop has produced an easy to understand guide to AWR and that is available free to any local employer.

Businesses are being warned about falling foul of new bribery laws which can result in unlimited fines and up to ten years in prison.

The Bribery Act 011 came into force on 1st July and introduces changes which could have significant implications for companies.

The Act applies to all UK-based businesses and organisations regardless of size as well as individuals.

Employers, directors and employees can be liable for severe penalties which include fines, jail terms and prevention from tendering for future public contracts.

Under the Act, the main offences are bribing another; being bribed, bribing a foreign public official and failure to prevent bribery. A ‘bribe’ is defined as to ‘offer, promise or give a financial advantage’ to another person.

Bribery includes gifts, hospitality, entertainment, political/charitable donations, sponsorship and giving publicity.

Lesley Walford, an employment solicitor with Dorset and New Forest law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors, said employers should review existing policies as a matter of urgency, particularly in relation to corporate hospitality and employees accepting gifts.

‘Ideally, employers should introduce an anti-bribery and corruption policy as this would provide a complete

defence to the corporate offence. That’s provided employees are properly informed of the policy and what it means in practice,’ said Lesley.

She added, ‘Training in anti-bribery should form part of an employee’s induction and employers should promote a culture of zero tolerance to bribery from the top to bottom of the organisation.’

Lesley also advised employers to ensure that bonus or commission schemes do not encourage employees to break the rules, especially where

performance related pay makes up a large part of the remuneration package.

Lesley Walford

Don’t leave home without it! Europe’s senior-level managers and executives are bringing work with them on holidays. A recent survey* by the leading career service Experteer (www.experteer.co.uk) showed the majority of respondents travel on holidays with laptop, smartphone, and/or mobile phone.

When asked about the extent they engage in job-related activities, differences appeared amongst Europeans: Whilst almost 60% of the British, the Spanish, French, Swiss French,

and Italians check their work e-mail at least every other day, more Germans do so ‘only in urgent cases’ or ‘never’. The Dutch prefer clearer separation between work and play: more than one-third never check e-mail whilst on holidays and one-fifth access it only when urgent.

*During a two week period in July 011, Experteer surveyed 5,069 of its registered candidates, senior-level managers and executives residing in Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Spain.

Crazy not to be selling onlineWith the rise of fast internet access and consumer trust, online shopping is an increasingly popular way for Brits to buy their products, whether it’s the weekly shop, clothes, or gifts for a loved one.

In 010, a survey of 000 UK shoppers found that .6% bought items over the internet at least once a week and their average online monthly spend was £71. With these figures increasing as the months go by, it’s crazy not to be selling online.

Think about it – there’s no shop to pay lighting and heating for and you can be open hours a day, seven days a week. Added to that, you can track what city your customers are coming from, what time of day they do it, what pages are the most popular and much more using Google Analytics or a similar stats package.

You can even test the design of your online shop to see if one version of a web page gets you more sales than another using split testing. This allows you to make constant improvements to increase the number of conversions you get, and the bottom line of that is more sales.

Shoppers in the UK spent £5.bn online during May 011 and if you want a share of that, you need an online shop (ecommerce site). They are easy to update when you change your product prices or add new lines and are the way forward for any shop-based business.

Get an online shop and you will wonder why you didn’t have one sooner.

UK’s top-performingSMEs onlineNew insight from Experian, the global information services company, reveals which of the UK’s small and medium sized companies grew most online in the last year. (See table below).

Social networks key to SME growth onlineGoogle plays a major role as the source of many SME site visits, with 1% of all UK internet visits in June to the top ten SMEs coming from Google. However, it is interesting to note that one in five visits to the fastest growing SMEs came from a social network in June 011. The most popular source was Facebook, which was responsible for nearly 1% of all visits to the top ten SMEs.

Despite the fact that Twitter is the third biggest social network in the UK, it delivers a surprisingly small amount of traffic through to these SMEs’ websites. Twitter appears to be an underused resource by these SMEs, which could suggest that the social network is not yet recognised by this audience as an effective channel, or that these companies are unsure of how to best adapt their marketing efforts to the site. The top ten fastest moving online SMEs of 011 are as follows:

Following a landmark ruling in the Court of Appeal, buy-to-let purchasers can no longer seek to rely on their bank’s valuation and will need to obtain their own when purchasing a property, to protect themselves against losses caused by a negligent overvaluation.

Moore Blatch professional negligence expert Marianne Jarvis says that the recent decision makes a marked distinction between owner-occupier and buy-to-let purchasers and overturns a former High Court decision.

Many owner-occupier purchasers don’t obtain their own valuation report and rely on that provided for the benefit of their lender before completing a purchase. If the valuation is then found to be negligent, there are circumstances in which the owner-occupier is able to claim against the surveyor whose

expertise was relied upon. In the current finding the

court took the view that the surveyor would have expected and accepted that the purchaser would be relying on that report.

Previously this was also thought to be the case for buy-to-let purchasers, but the recent decision by the Court of Appeal confirms that the protection the court is willing to allow does not extend that far. Buy-to-let purchasers are investors and are therefore expected to have satisfied themselves as to the value of their investment.

‘The latest decision has serious implications for buy-to-let

purchasers, failure to obtain their own report could mean that, even if a valuation is found to be negligent, they will be unable to pursue a claim,’ cautions Marianne.

In the current case, the valuer’s report was found to be negligent and it was shown that the purchaser had relied on its findings when deciding to proceed with the purchase. The court however concluded that despite this, the purchaser had not established a sufficient degree of proximity between himself and the valuer, leading the investor’s case against the valuer to fail.

Windfest pulls a three-nighter for 2011The south coast’s biggest beach and watersports festival Windfest (9th -11th September) knows how to get the party started with no less than three nights of ticketed parties scheduled to follow the day’s action-packed activities.

Windfest organiser Gary Willingham said, ‘The Windfest parties have become so popular that over the past couple of years we have responded to that demand by putting on three nights of parties. After a hard day of competing, it gives the riders the opportunity to relax and unwind. Nowhere else will you see such a mix of locals, visitors, business people and the biggest stars in the extreme sports industry socialising together on the beach.’

A little bit of knowledge can be a good thing .…

When it comes to understanding and managing legal risks that a business might face, an internal understanding of the bigger “legal picture” can be highly valuable and empowering to a business.Whilst it makes sense for businesses to “buy in” legal advice when required, a high level understanding of the bigger picture can help a business to make its own informed decisions in relation to the legal aspects of its operation. Benefits include improved risk management and a controlled approach to legal spend. Most people want to understand enough about the law so that they know what they are doing and why,

or what they should or should not being doing or prioritising. One of the main barriers however is the fear that they don’t know what they don’t know, and so they just don’t do anything. This is a shame, because a little bit of the right knowledge, could be really helpful and would also help to strip away a lot of the ridiculous “mystique” that seems to be associated with law. So where do you start? Once you have resolved to make it a priority to understand what you need to know, the internet/ free training sessions are a useful starting point, but it is important to talk about what you have learnt. It is the process of talking and reading that leads to getting “comfortable” with it. How do I know? I’ve just had to do it myself in relation to buying a CRM system!(John Maxwell – U.S. leadership guru sets out the above steps to moving forward – there’s one missing, but if you agree with this article – you’ve already taken it!)

Lack of businesses in the south offering apprenticeships City College apprentice Will Toogood and his employer Dave Atkins of

GE Aviation

A leading figure within apprenticeships in the south has warned that more businesses need to take on apprentices.

employers. Our aim at City College is to show organisations that taking on an apprentice can be the best thing to move their business forward, despite these tough economic times.

‘Students leaving college are qualified and have the skills, and often experience, to become an excellent asset to a business. The majority of students leaving City College for example have A level equivalent qualifications and there are in a wide variety of frameworks, including creative and media, IT

and business admin and finance. Apprenticeships are not just for construction and engineering and not just for lower level skills. This is a message that needs to be conveyed to employers across the

south and the UK.’ To find out more about taking

Warren Munson, Director of Dorset based accountancy firm Inspire, is on a roll. Following on from his own motivation review last year, which saw his personal management and performance skills go under the microscope, Inspire has now completed a Motivation Review for the 5-strong team.

Developing the workforce is something Warren really understands thanks to the help of Alan Adair at Extra Dimension. Inspire is now set upon a path of employee engagement and retention that is second to none. Warren says, ‘I decided to do a motivation review with everyone within Inspire simply because everyone matters. My own personal review taught me that understanding what makes you tick is key to achieving maximum performance, so for a team to be able to share this information with each other could only be a plus. With Alan

Adair’s support, the process has directed us towards some key changes and improvements at Inspire - definitely improving our processes, performance and profit.’

In the short time since the review, Warren tells of the team’s more positive and proactive attitude, with improved communication and team working. These improvements have lead to the provision of better customer service and a real sense of understanding among the team. Warren adds, ‘It’s really great to know that my employees are confident in their roles and happy at Inspire. My management team have far greater insight into how to maintain and increase current levels of motivation, and hence performance. Everybody wins.’

Lindsey Noble, Principal and CEO of City College Southampton, said that the economic pressures of the recession had resulted in cutbacks within recruitment and training, reducing the number of opportunities for young people.

She said, ‘With the cost of tuition fees rising and the abolition of EMA grants, apprenticeship schemes have become even more popular with young people looking to get straight into work.

‘We need to focus on supporting these young people by helping them to find

Continuous professional development or developing our personal effectiveness?

Most of us are bombarded with the on-going requirement to prove that we have continuous professional development (CPD) records – is this just a paper exercise required by the professional bodies or is there a real benefit?

It could be said that there are many benefits to be gained from undertaking a regular review of our activities and personal effectiveness. How often do we make decisions and then have the luxury to analyse them within the pressures of our daily lives – probably very rarely. However, by recording what we have achieved, the skills we have deployed and what we have learned we review our success and analyse things that could have been improved on. By taking the time to do this we also start to look at the future – what key decisions will be needed in the future? What skills will be required? What capabilities and competencies will be needed?

This is particularly important when we are going through a change in circumstances, either restructuring within the organisation, or perhaps considering a new role or career. What do I need to do to keep updated with my professional skills, or what do I need to do now to make that career move – different qualifications, more

access to learning and development programmes, or access to different and varied experiences.

Research suggests that a good understanding of self in terms of strengths and weaknesses enables individuals to develop effective strategies for

the future and better respond to the every changing demands of their working environment.

Personal effectiveness is about; identifying and releasing our aspirations, understanding our strengths and weaknesses and building our capability, and last but not least producing desired results thus ensuring our success.

The CPD log enables us to ask these questions, and more, and analyse them against our personal objectives. It can help to keep us motivated and excited about our future prospects. It can also help us to recognise our achievements – something that captures a brilliant idea and our success.

You may use your own CPD log, but if you would like to review another model, then visit the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM ) website to view its CPD log www.i-l-m.co.uk - you might also find some useful tips and techniques.

Paul Cashmore, Technical Director at Blue Chip explains the significance of the event for businesses currently using, or anticipating the use of virtualisation software: ‘VMware vSphere5 is one of the most important releases of the market-leading virtualisation platform to date, offering better application performance and availability for all business-critical applications. However, to realise the full benefits of virtualisation, businesses require a storage solution that delivers the high availability and flexibility requited by the virtualised environment.

‘EMC’s VNX platform as the next-generation of scalable storage platform, combines powerful and flexible hardware with advanced efficiency, management and protection software to ensure business can run with unprecedented speed, simplicity, intelligence and security.’

Cashmore concludes, ‘Individually, these are advanced solutions in their own right. Combined, they herald a new era for virtualisation with a formidable proposition for progressive businesses. This event will be of great interest to managers and directors not just involved in IT, but also with the objective of achieving greater efficiencies across the whole of their business.’

IKEA was among the visitors, leading a deal to deliver furniture to the Channel Islands. Catching the eye of a major national company like IKEA would have been virtually impossible for smaller companies before the advent of internet marketing.

Chris Addison co-founder of the BIG Agency said, ‘Internet marketing is not well understood by the business community generally but is a hugely powerful tool for harnessing the power of the web.’ Chris Addison

Stanley Gibbons selects Dorset agency for ad campaignDorset creative design agency AJA Design was recently commissioned by world recognised stamp collectors, Stanley Gibbons, to develop a print and digital advertising campaign for its investments division.

With all the recent uncertain financial news, Stanley Gibbons was keen to promote the capital security benefit of investing in stamps alongside the potential of promising growth, whilst reminding the audience of current poor returns with more traditional investment vehicles.

AJA Design Managing Director, Lisa Rossiter, explained the approach: ‘Investing in stamps is not traditionally recognised as a standard method of growing your portfolio, so I wanted my creatives to approach the campaign in an untraditional way. The strength of this campaign is that it can work as well online as in printed publications, with so much potential for other forms of marketing. I am delighted with the result, the approach is unique, memorable and demands attention from the reader.’

Stanley Gibbons Sales and Marketing Director, Keith Heddle said, ‘I was pleased with the fresh, creative approach AJA brought to our new ad campaign and I very much enjoyed working with them on the campaign.’

Ahoy! Tenacious local support to benefit the Jubilee Sailing Trust

L-r: Sarah Davies, Keith Sekree and Mark Sekree

Independent financial consultancy -S Financial Management is showing support for people living with a disability through a new partnership with the Jubilee Sailing Trust.

Southampton-based -S Financial Management will be sponsoring activities and hosting fundraising events to benefit the Trust, which operates the only two tall ships in the world specifically designed and built for the enjoyment of people with physical disabilities – the Lord Nelson and Tenacious.

Planning has already commenced on the first fundraising event under the partnership, which will be a drinks and canapés evening to be held in September at the TAOI Gallery in Southampton. The prominent modern art gallery is owned by Keith Sekree, one of the co-partners of -S Financial Management.

The gallery is a fitting location for the event given its floorboards are the very same ones from when the location was used to build the Shamrock V yacht for Sir Thomas Lipton in 190.

Mr Sekree said, ‘I couldn’t imagine a better charity to be involved with. They’re obviously passionate about what they do, and the activities they’re involved with are so awe-inspiring.

‘We aren’t the sort of people who’ll just send a cheque off in the post and wish them the best, so if ever we get a chance to get stuck in and really help, this is it.’

-S Financial Management is a family owned and operated wealth management consultancy operating out of Shamrock Quay in Southampton. For 0 years, the company has provided clients from across the south with expert advice on wealth management and protection, strategies for retirement as well as senior executive pensions. Smooth expansion for family firmSouth Coast Alarms, a local family-run business which specialises in the installation of security alarm systems, has gone from strength-to-strength since it was established in 1986, and now the business is expanding even further.

The company was founded by Andy Grant-Jones, who now runs it with his wife Trudie and their son Mark; they moved into business space at the Basepoint Weymouth Jubilee Enterprise Centre in 006 and now South Coast Alarms is one of the leading security systems companies in the region. As the business grew, Andy decided that the company needed bigger workspace; he said, ‘Basepoint offer flexible terms so we were able to move into larger premises fairly easily, which was great as it caused minimal disruption to the day-to-day running of the business.’

Units at Basepoint Weymouth are rented on four-week rolling licenses and so the centre offers flexibility to local SMEs. The centre is located within walking distance of Weymouth town centre and close to Weymouth Retail Park with good road and public transport links.

The Business Advert:Layout 1 8/8/11 15:03 Page 1

New software creates enhanced imagesDorset-based Blackmore Ltd, one of the country’s greenest printers, has continued to invest in the latest technology so as to be able to offer the highest quality printing to its very wide client base.

The latest investment has been image enhancement software which allows for superb reproduction of images, particularly when printing on difficult recycled and uncoated materials including newsprint, which until now, would produce dull and flat results.

This image enhancement software, together with printing on a new 5-colour, Japanese, Komori press installed earlier this year, has produced results of such high quality that Blackmore’s clients have been glowing in their appreciation.

One newspaper client reported that ‘the stunning results were the best quality that we had ever seen’ and the Lighthouse Theatre in Poole is so impressed that it has added an endorsement to Blackmore’s own brochure saying: ‘They have been able to brighten and sharpen our images and our latest brochure on uncoated material, has been a marked improvement with bright, sharp and detailed images that really jump from the page.’

The software has the added advantage of saving up to 0% of the ink used and this sits very comfortably with Blackmore’s strong environmental position as the company holds a string of impressive environmental accreditations.

Marketing and Sales Director, David Bland says, ‘Our clients are very environmentally aware and we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact. This new software is yet another way that our clients can benefit from working with Blackmore which helps to improve their own environmental profile whilst maintaining a very high quality printed product.’

Wessex renewable Energy supply solar power to f J Chalke

road test: Mitsubishi Colt JuroBy Tim Saunders

transport & travel

Car names always fascinate me.It tends to be manufactures like Ford, Volkswagen and Kia that use weird and wonderful names. Mondeo, Polo and

Pride, for instance… They don’t really mean much apart from perhaps the latter, which would suggest that Kia was well and truly proud of its rather dull and characterless hatchback in 1986.

Others, such as Audi, BMW and Citroen opt for simple letter and number combinations, perhaps trying to appeal to accountants. This doesn’t do much for me. Take Citroen’s C - it doesn’t provide ‘explosive’ performance so why on earth mislead the consumer in this way?

It just goes to show that names, letters or numbers have to be chosen with great care so that buyers are not for any reason left disappointed.

Mitsubishi is one manufacturer that picks its names very carefully and sticks with them.

Take its Colt, which was first launched in 196. That name reminds me of the Colt 5 handgun but also of a young pony, gambolling across a field – an appropriate name for the chirpy, bottom of the range vehicle.

The current seventh generation Colt was launched in 00.

On the inside, Mitsubishi has cleverly made its Juro model feel like a larger vehicle: it’s fairly spacious for a three-door hatchback and has a

good quality black leather interior together with electric windows and a reasonable sound system. A neat touch is the Garmin portable sat nav. The seats aren’t bad but they could do with being a little more supportive. There’s a reasonable boot. The air conditioning soothed my hayfever.

This model, based on the CZ, includes 16-inch alloy wheels. To drive, the 1.-litre proves a dependable companion covering a

variety of journeys on motorways down to windy country B-roads. It is just as happy travelling at 70mph as it is crawling around town. Another pleasant surprise is the fact that it’s fitted with cruise control, which aids economy and helps maintain a steady speed. However, this 1.-litre

petrol unit does not make me smile in the same way as the diesel version, which delivers 59mpg - the petrol falling some way short of this.

That said this Mitsubishi offers bags more character and style than many mainstream hatchbacks.

‘It’s safe and easy to drive making it good in town - although the large windscreen pillars restrict visibility somewhat,’ writes Parkers, the car guide. ‘If you can live with the small boot the little Colt represents a well-equipped small hatch that’s comfortable and ideal if you want something a bit different.’

The Mitsubishi Colt Juro starts from £10,99.

The Colt range prices:New price range £9,304 - £11,754 Used seventh generation price range £1,780 - £7,650 (earlier versions considerably cheaper)

Rising trend in Car Key Burglaries

Eve r y d ay a t l e a s t 5 3 householders in England and Wales find that their car has disappeared following a burglary of their home to obtain car keys (source AA).The latest British Crime Survey published by the Home Office shows that 17,70 cars were stolen during 008/09, a reduction of 1% compared with the previous year. However 15% of all cars stolen are by firstly obtaining keys by burglary or robbery. This r ising trend in car key burglaries is likely to have come about through improved vehicle security that makes it almost impossible to steal a modern car without first obtaining the keys.Because of this type of crime, car insurers are potentially facing claims of over £190m a year as a result of domestic burglary. Surprisingly, home owners can make it extremely easy for burglars to get hold of car keys. A common tactic for thieves is to take keys off hall tables or from convenient key racks near the front door, simply by ‘fishing’ for them with a pole through the letterbox. It should be remembered that keys are the weakest link in the car security chain and should be treated as cash. We wouldn’t leave a few thousand pounds or more in banknotes visible for all to see, yet that’s exactly what many people seem to do with their car keys.So the message should be clear, protect and keep your car keys in a secure place that will prohibit the easy snatching of them either from within your home or whilst you are out and about.

High performance Mazars attracts new motor clientPrestigious car dealership Poole Audi has put the Poole office of international accountants and business advisory firm, Mazars, in the driving seat.

The only Audi-approved dealer in Dorset and West Hampshire had originally been employing a national accountancy firm, based out of the area, to handle its audit affairs.

David Kelly, Managing Director, who bought Poole Audi from the Page group in August 000 explains, ‘One of our policies is to work with and support Dorset-based businesses. Poole Audi was drawn to Mazars because of the range of financial expertise they could offer us on our doorstep.’

He added, ‘We were also attracted by their like-minded culture of doing business in a professional, thorough and efficient way.’

Brian Hutchinson, Senior Partner with Mazars says, ‘We are delighted to welcome such a highly respected business as Poole Audi to our client portfolio.’

Based in Parkstone, Ocean Automotive Ltd trades as Poole Audi and has two affiliated businesses - Poole Accident Repair, the premium car repair bodyshop and BUMP!, the smart repair centre for more minor vehicle repairs. Between them, they employ 110 staff and have a turnover of £0m.

Wessex Renewable Energy, part of the Wessex Group of Companies based in North Dorset, has secured a major commercial solar photovoltaic installation contract with F J Chalke in Wincanton consisting of 96 solar panels that will output in excess of KWp. The installation commenced in July 011, taking approximately three weeks to complete. The panels are situated on the roof of the Wincanton showroom where F J Chalke is currently selling the all new electric Nissan Leaf Car. Customers will be able to see a working demonstration of how the solar panels will be generating the electricity to charge the new electric car in the showroom!

Director, Steve Fowler, of F J Chalke which is still an independent and family run business of over 75 years, commented, ‘We chose Wessex Renewable Energy because they are a local company with an excellent reputation for reliability, value for money and have the knowledge and expertise in this extremely competitive and complex market.’

Wessex Renewable Energy Manager, Thomas Mortimer, commented, ‘We have great pride in securing a contract with such a large reputable local car dealer, especially as the energy produced will not only supply electrical power to their showroom facilities but also power their fleet of electric cars.’

your energy needs needn’t cost the EarthBy Steve Harvey, Anolis Renewable EnergyBritish Gas has announced that customers can expect significant increases in energy costs with energy bills rising by an average 16-18%. But what alternative is there?

‘Customers of Anolis Renewable Energy, both commercial and domestic, report that a no-pressure, gimmick-free approach and highly professional standard of work with effective reductions in energy costs is what they find with us’, says Steve Harvey, Director. Mr Harvey reports a recent surge in business, particularly for Solar PV systems and new air-source heat pumps, which make a gas supply redundant. With a new Renewable Energy showroom opening in Poole imminently, Mr Harvey believes Anolis RE offers something different: ‘We find that our customers like to visit our headquarters, meet the installation team and ask questions without the hard-sell. Indeed the facts and figures speak for themselves in terms of savings both financially and environmentally.’

The versatility of the PC-1 attracts the attention of anyone who wishes to bypass airport terminal check-in queues,’ said Bob Berry, whose team has sold 6 of the executive PC-1 aircraft in the UK, Ireland and Spain, since 005. ‘The aviation exhibition is now essential within our marketing plan and its expansion since last year is well deserved.’

0 PC-1s are based at Bournemouth International Airport and Goodwood Airfield where there are fully approved maintenance facilities by the Swiss manufacturer.

JETS expands UK headquarters Jet Engineering Technical Support Ltd (JETS) has agreed a deal with commercial property company MAG Developments to expand its UK headquarters at Bournemouth Airport – taking its total occupation to 95,000 sq ft – less than 1 months after relocating from its former base at Southampton.

Taking an additional 15,000 sq ft of hangar space, JETS will expand its fly-in, fly-out facility with the opening of a new dedicated paint bay, enabling it to offer a ‘one-stop-shop’ capability to customers, who can now schedule aircraft painting work as part of the routine maintenance input.

Specialists in the maintenance of Challenger, Hawker and Dornier aircraft, JETS moved its base to Bournemouth in August 010, when it took 5,000 sq ft of hangar space, plus an extensive ramp area in excess of 5,000 sq ft. The expansion increases JETS hangar space by 50%, meaning it can now accommodate larger aircraft such as the Falcon and Gulfstream fleet types.

Aviation is not without danger as was unfortunately demonstrated when Flt Lt Jon Egging, Red 4, died when his aircraft crashed following the Red Arrows display at the 2011 Bournemouth Air Festival. As was the request of the pilots and the RAF the show did go on.

Whilst remembering this dreadful tragedy and striving to improve safety, it is also important to recognise that these air displays benefit numerous charities, bring visitors to the area, and provide a welcome boost to the business economy.

The team behind the Bournemouth Air Festival are to be commended for their organisational ability and professionalism which was clearly demonstrated whilst dealing with the tragic and unexpected events during the 2011 show.

Despite the first day of the festival being washed out by floods, the second day saw crowds bathed in sunshine lining the sea front while they witnessed a spectacular free air festival for which tourists, residents, businesses and the many charities are truly grateful.

Plans for 452,000 square feet of development at Dorset’s Aviation Business ParkMAG Developments has submitted an outline planning application for the development of 5,000 sq ft (,000 sq m) of business premises on its Aviation Business Park at Bournemouth Airport which is expected to attract new investment to the area and create jobs for local people.

Covering 5-acres of Brownfield land split across five separate plots on the western sector of Aviation Business Park, the plans will secure the long term future of the site, with the creation of a 10 year development programme for new B1, B, B8, business space and airside hangarage opportunities.

David Roberts, Property Development Director, MAG Developments, said, ‘Aviation Business Park along with the airport, is one of the most important employment locations in south east Dorset and is of significant strategic importance to the local economy, as recognised by the local authorities and the recently submitted bid for the new Local Enterprise Partnership. These plans provide a clear long-term strategy for the business park and following on from the £5m investment in new airport facilities, will complement existing stock on the estate, attracting investment through development opportunities that will provide quality industrial, office and warehousing accommodation.’

Serving the Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch conurbations, the Aviation Business Park currently supports over 185 businesses and around ,500 jobs.

A decision on the planning application is expected by the end of the year.
