Research shows the south’s entrepreneurs looking to overseas expansion in new yearRecent research carried out by RSM Tenon has

revealed that half of all entrepreneurs in the south are looking to expand into overseas markets in 2012, with the majority looking to western Europe as a main source of growth.

The research, entitled ‘Lonely at the Top: The entrepreneurial challenge’, surveyed the UK’s leading entrepreneurs about the different challenges and issues they face in today’s entrepreneurial Britain.

Unsurprisingly, the highest number of entrepreneurs looking to expand overseas was based in London (68%). Just under half of the UK entrepreneurs said that western Europe is the area that they expected to expand into, and this was followed by eastern Europe at 37% and north America at 35%.

But it isn’t just goods and services where the south’s entrepreneurs can see opportunities abroad. 14% said that they are looking to acquire additional businesses overseas within the next year, and 33% said that increased opportunities internationally had been an important factor in the overall improvement for entrepreneurship in the UK.

Mike Sables, RSM Tenon Regional Head of International Business, said, ‘We are well aware of the international potential within the region as a large number of our clients are internationally owned or internationally active, but it is still interesting that despite the current crisis in the Eurozone, most of the entrepreneurs see their businesses expanding into Europe over the next year. I think entrepreneurs should look beyond the crisis, be prepared to go in and stay in for the long-term, and with advice from people with the right experience, there could be some good rewards for UK entrepreneurs post the issues in the Eurozone.’

Contract successDorset organics recycling firm Eco Sustainable Solutions has landed a three year contract to handle waste wood in neighbouring Hampshire. The company will recycle waste wood delivered to the county’s network of Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Eco is expected to process 80,000 tonnes of waste wood annually at a new site in Southampton. About 60,000 tonnes will be shipped overseas to fuel power stations in Sweden. The remaining 20,000 tonnes of ‘clean’ wood will be used for animal bedding and as fuel for biomass plants in the UK.

Eco was awarded the contract by Veolia Environmental Services Ltd which has held the contract to manage all of Hampshire’s municipal waste since 1995.

The Parley company is working in partnership with Solent Stevedores.

TANK MUSEUM GOES GREENThe Tank Museum has plenty of green items in its world famous collection, but a new addition is set to provide a major boost to its environmental credentials.

That’s because renewable electricity generator, Farm Power, has installed over 200 solar photovoltaic panels on a section of the Dorset attraction’s roof.

The panels will generate around 20 times the combined electricity consumption of the average UK household, generating 47,000 kilowatt hours and reducing the museum’s carbon footprint by 20 tonnes per year.

The project has been developed for Farm Power Ltd, the independent renewable electricity generator, who has partnered with the Tank Museum. It has been designed and managed by energy efficiency solutions company, Anesco, using its locally based teams.

Local hotel wins international award

The Ramada Encore Hotel, based on Bath Road, went up against 170 other Ramada hotels in Europe, Middle East and Asia and won!

Each year the Wyndham Hotel Group which is the largest hotel group in the world recognises all its hotels in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in each brand and they have separate awards, including

quality, guest satisfaction and Wyndham Rewards. This year the Ramada Encore Hotel won ‘Hotel of the Year 2011’.

Hotel of the Year is based on four separate areas, guest satisfaction, quality audit or mystery shopper, Wyndham Rewards and brand engagement. The award is marked based on the scores in these four areas averaged out over the year. Which means the Ramada Encore Bournemouth is currently the best overall Ramada Hotel in EMEA.

‘With only two properties in Bournemouth, to go up against these big hotel companies in Europe and win is a massive achievement,’ says Brendan Westwood, Sales Director.

‘Hotel of the Year is the big prize and our team thoroughly deserve all the plaudits. Without their constant attention to detail and service we would not have been fortunate enough to win.’

£50m development now ready to go ahead Bournemouth’s £50m development plan to create West Central, the contemporary all-weather family dining and leisure facility in the heart of town is now ready to go ahead, say developers.

Site owner NCP and its development partner, Licet Holdings Ltd, are now finalising plans so building work can start.

West Central will transform the old bus station site adjacent to the Square, Exeter Road and the Lower Gardens from its current use as a car park into a state of the art multiplex cinema, covered and al fresco family dining areas plus a secure underground car park.

Licet’s Director, Chris Dymond, says that although the development was put on hold due to the challenging economic climate, confidence in the leisure sector business has returned, and work could start by summer 2012, completing in 2014.

New X-ray technology gets US FDA clearanceThe US Food and Drug Administration has cleared an exciting piece of new technology which measures the function of the spine. The technology, which was invented at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) in Bournemouth, is already helping patients with difficult back problems.

Since 1910, surgeons have measured spinal function by taking two X-rays at the extremes of bending (flexion and extension) and then measuring the difference in the positions of the vertebrae by drawing lines on them. The new technology invented at the AECC uses motion X-rays (fluoroscopy) and quantifies the whole motion pattern by tracking the bones automatically across hundreds of frames using computer programs. This gives spinal surgeons much more information with similar accuracy and X-ray dosage.

Christmas may seem just a distant memory by now, with all the chocolates you were given finished and those New Year resolutions fading with each week that goes by. But how is 2012 shaping up for you, your business, and the economy?

If you look back, as I have, at the economists’ predictions for the year, they all had a similar message – a faltering recovery and fear of the unknown. What is clear already is that more and more businesses are closing as fewer and fewer business owners have the funds or the banking facilities to ride out the storm. So how will you fare?

Our business is all about helping people whose company faces difficult times, and as always, most of them leave it much too late before calling me, so I want to make you an offer – one you can hardly refuse…

We are willing to give a FREE financial review and health-check to the first 15 business owners who call our office. All you have to do is pick up the phone, dial 01202 55119 and leave your name, company and a contact number. We will do financial and credit checks on you, we will come and talk to you about your business, your finances and your customers. And then we’ll give you some tips and advice on how to take back, or keep if you are lucky, control of your company. All completely free for the first 15 who call. So don’t miss out – pick up the phone today. We’ve been doing corporate recovery and turnaround work now for over 0 years, so we know what we’re talking about…

Check your tax code… because HMRC officers may not have done

PKF Accountants & business advisers is warning all employees and pensioners to check their tax codes for the forthcoming tax year as soon as they receive them. Over the next three months, tax codes for the 2012/1 tax year will land on millions of doormats across the country but most will have been automatically generated by HMRC’s computer systems and will not have been checked manually by tax officers – potentially resulting in significant numbers of taxpayers either under- or overpaying tax.

Neil Dimes, partner in charge of the south west office of PKF says, ‘HMRC has had problems getting its National Insurance and PAYE Service system working smoothly, leading to millions of taxpayers either under- or overpaying tax in the past few years. It has admitted that it will not “fully stabilise” the system until 201 so, if you want to be sure there are no problems with your tax, it is best to check your coding notice or ask an expert for help.’

High street banks price war New switching bribes mean for the first time five banks have entered the frayThe start of 2012 has seen three big high street banks launch new or boosted incentives, aimed at signing up customers. An unprecedented five have hardcore promotions vying for the coveted best-buy crown - including one of the traditional big four, who normally steer clear of these skirmishes: Halifax, First Direct, Santander, HSBC and Nationwide are the banks battling for business.

Martin Lewis, creator of MoneySavingExpert.com, comments, ‘Finally there’s a chink of light in the current account market. Competition is starting to sizzle - at least for those with decent credit scores and within their overdraft limits. Most interesting is HSBC’s involvement as it’s one of the big four, who usually rely on the legacy of their huge customer bases from a bygone age of banking. Hopefully that dominance is ending and banks are starting to realise if they want to keep good customers they can’t get away with paying pitiful interest and giving bog-standard service.

‘For customers this is a huge boon. Banks are trying to bribe you to switch - delight in it and shove the cash happily into your back pocket. Switching is much easier than it used to be, direct debits and standing orders are moved for you, though always ensure people who pay you know your new details. For safety keep the old account open for at least three months, with a small amount of funds in as a safety net.’

Having seen spectacular growth in its training business, IT specialists Blue Chip will start 2012 with double the previous year’s capacity.

Blue Chip’s Training Manager Oliver Bruffell explains, ‘2011 has been a great year so we need to invest further by bringing additional capacity online. As well as our new city-centre site in Southampton, we are opening facilities further east along the M27 and at our head office in Poole.’

The decision to expand at a time of economic uncertainty is seen as a sign of confidence and comes shortly after Blue Chip completed its eleventh consecutive year of growth and record £18m turnover.

Bruffell continues, ‘Despite the tough market, we have continued to offer our clients the very best levels of service and this has set us apart from our competitors. Best iNDEPENDENT FiRm in the south west

Look ahead with the Mazars Business Club and Bank of EnglandThe first Mazars Business Club meeting for 2012 opens with a top speaker from the Bank Of England. Chris Piper will give a presentation on the Bank of England’s latest forecast for the UK economy with a discussion of the key risks and policy issues over the medium term.

This event is being held on Monday 5th March at the RNLI, the Lifeboat College, Poole. It starts at 5.0pm followed by wine and canapés.

To register to attend this event, contact Sandra Waring at Mazars on 01202 680777.

Inspire, the Poole-based firm of accountants and tax advisers, has been named the best independent firm in the south west at this year’s British Accountancy Awards.

In awarding the title to Inspire the judges said, ‘This was an easy choice. They impressed their clients, were innovative and showed good involvement in the community. They caught our attention with their international focus and expert focus.’

Speaking of the achievement Warren Munson, Managing Director of Inspire, said, ‘This is another great achievement for Inspire and our team. We pride ourselves on being different to other firms in the area by focusing on real business needs and offering true value added services to our clients in addition to standard compliance.’

Inspire has previously won the Accountancy Age Small Firm of the Year award in 2009.

The annual investment allowance (AIA) can be a very useful tax relief for businesses purchasing plant and machinery. The AIA is available for expenditure on plant and machinery up to the current annual limit of £100,000 and effectively allows for the cost of the asset(s) to be deducted from the taxable profits of the business in that period.

However, from 6th April 2012, or 1st April 2012 for other companies, the annual expenditure limit of £100,000 reduces to £25,000. This could be significant for capital intensive businesses, such as manufacturers, or where there is simply a current need to invest in plant and machinery.

Clearly it is sensible to bring forward any planned expenditure on plant and machinery before April 2012 if you are profitable and wish to take advantage of the higher limits. For businesses with a year that straddles the April 2012 date the maximum AIA available needs to be calculated according to transitional rules.

For example:Company A is a profitable manufacturing business with taxable profits exceeding £100,000 and has a year end on 1st of July 2012. It has not purchased any plant or machinery in the period from 1st August 2011 but wishes to invest £25,000 in a new lathe within the next 9 months.

Question: When should Company A buy the lathe?Answer: Well, it depends! (Sorry!) So let’s look at the options:

When to buy plant and machinery in 2012?The best choice from a tax point of view will be to purchase the lathe before 31st March 2012. This means purchasing and installing it for use in the business by that date to get the full £25,000 allowance, the maximum AIA available in this period being £66,667 (i.e. £100,000 x 8 months / 12 months).

If commercially it is preferable to delay the purchase beyond this date but before 31st July 2012, e.g. for financing reasons, then the maximum tax relief is restricted to £8,333 (i.e. £25,000 x 4 months/ 12 months). Tax relief on the balance of the cost, i.e. £16,667 will be given as writing down allowances at the new rate from April 2012 of 18% per annum on a reducing balance basis in subsequent years.

A further delay beyond 31st July 2012 means the tax relief will be given against the next year’s taxable profits but the full £25,000 is available for relief. However the maximum AIA is then £25,000 and so any further expenditure on plant and machinery in that year will not qualify for AIA.

Clearly, where it is appropriate, it is important to ‘use it or lose it’ and the timing will be vital over the next few months to maximise the relief available.

For more information on this or to discuss your specific need please contact Geoff Hill, Tax Manager on 01202 875900 or email [email protected]

Business Finance – Funding needsThe world of business finance is complex and constantly changing. One of the most common causes of business failure is insufficient working capital, so it is vital to get the right funding structure in place for your business to ensure future success and growth.

There are a number of common types of funding solutions available:• Invoice Funding • Asset Based Lending • Asset Finance • Trade Finance • Business Loans

The need for funding can be broken down into key categories: Funding for Growth - Rapid growth is exciting and creates many

opportunities. It also requires strong management, good financial systems and crucially, an appropriate funding structure to accommodate the increasing working and fixed capital requirements. Invoice Finance, Asset Based Lending and Business Loans, or a combination, can offer an ideal solution.

Funding an acquisition - Making an acquisition is a significant undertaking and requires careful planning and choosing the right professional advisers. Funding is a key cornerstone of the process and is generally achieved through a mix of cash injection, external funding and possibly deferred consideration by the vendor. External funding will often be through a structured lend or in the form of Asset Based Lending. Invoice Finance, Asset Finance and Business Loans are all used extensively in acquisition finance.

New assets - The purchase of new, or re-finance of existing assets, particularly vehicles, equipment, plant and machinery, can be financed relatively easily and quickly. Asset Based Finance is useful for start-up, capital intensive, fast growing and even struggling businesses. Assistance is also available with funding multiple asset types through Asset Based Lending and specialist areas such as Property.

Releasing working capital - Cashflow really is the lifeblood of a successful business and having sufficient funds to meet day to day

cash needs and allow growth is critical. Equally, many businesses need additional working capital to help overcome a recent/current business downturn. Possible solutions might include Invoice Finance, Business Loans or Asset Finance.

Funding international trade - Bridging the gap between an order being received and the goods being delivered or sold, is especially important for importers and exporters where the timescales involved can be long. Trade Finance can provide the solution to this situation.

At RSM Tenon we have a dedicated Business Finance team helping entrepreneurs source and obtain appropriate funding facilities for their businesses.

The Business Finance team works with business owners to obtain a thorough understanding of the finance requirement of their business. We also support and advise entrepreneurs on Commercial Property Finance, Bridging Loans, Sales Aid Leasing and Block Discounting.

At RSM Tenon, we have the market knowledge to advise on what type of funding is best suited for you and which funder is the appropriate partner, saving time trawling through countless websites and product brochures. If you require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

ioD South West reaction to inflation figuresCommenting on the latest inflation figures, Gerry Jones, chairman of the Institute of Directors for the south west said:

What goes up must come down. We are finally seeing the sharp falls in inflation which we expect to continue in 2012. VAT effects falling out of the year-on-year index, lower utility prices and weakening demand should exert strong downward pressure on inflation in 2012. Over recent years the inflation story has been all about overshooting. Looking ahead to 2013 it could be all about undershooting. Today’s inflation figures suggest that quantitative easing will be expanded in February.

employment talkSlashing the cost of sickness absence NHS Plus has launched an innovative free service for small businesses in England to help them reduce sickness absence and improve the health and wellbeing of their workforce. The new Health for Work Adviceline will provide vital help and support to organisations with fewer than 250 employees who often feel the burden of sickness absence the hardest, particularly during this period of relative economic instability.

Each year around 11 million employees in the UK take sick leave and, while most people return to work, around 00,000 people go on to claim health-related benefits. This costs the taxpayer £1bn a year and causes the country as a whole to miss out on £15bn in economic output. Overall, working-age ill health and sickness absence

cost the UK economy more than £100bn each year. The impact is particularly significant for small businesses for whom the cost of sickness absence is around £700 per employee per year (CIPD, 2010) - a substantial cost for small businesses to cover.

The Adviceline offers advice in three ways:

Free telephone advice for employers on Freephone 0800 0 77 88 44. Self-service information through access to an extensive, intelligent, online knowledge base. Online communication with a contact centre by submitting a question to the support team, or ‘chatting’ directly with a member of the team (a form of instant messaging).

Changes to employment law will see companies liable to larger penalties if they are found to have unfairly dismissed employees.

Moore Blatch employment expert, Katherine Maxwell, said the changes are part of the annual revision of the Employment Rights Order which came into force at the beginning of February.

‘The largest change which employers need to be aware of is the increase in the maximum compensation award for unfair dismissal which will rise from £68,400 to £72,00,’ she said. ‘The increased awards make it even more important for companies to have robust employment and HR strategies.’

Other changes affect limits on the amount of a week’s pay for the calculation of statutory redundancy payments and the

basic award for unfair dismissal. The new rates come into force

on 1st February 2012 and apply to incidents on or after this date. The old rates will apply to any dismissals or action before this date, regardless of the date on which compensation is awarded.

2012 survival guide for managers

Helen Jamieson

If the Christmas and New Year break didn’t fully refresh you after a hard 2011 managing some difficult staff issues, here Helen Jamieson of Ringwood-based HR consultancy Jaluch presents her very own ten commandments of managing staff:

I will stop and listen when people want my attention – but no more than twice a day!

I will remember the paperwork even though it is probably the most boring part of my job.

I will slow down and remember that others do not move at 100mph as I do.

I will not ‘put up and shut up’ when an employee is misbehaving just because I’m afraid of being sued for something.

I will not forget that you can get immense job satisfaction from developing people so will try to do more of this.

I will remember that most employees are not motivated by muffins on a Friday or doughnuts on my birthday.

I will continually remind myself I am not superman/

I promise not to lose my rag and sack someone on the spot as I know that could result in me losing the shirt off my back.

I will remember that once upon a time I was just an employee too so will try to manage my expectations accordingly and not expect my staff to work 25 hours a day and know things that only Albert Einstein would have known.

I will be brave and tackle my underperformers who cause me stress and promise Jaluch not to leave this to a Friday afternoon at 4pm.

Unemployment still poses many questions in the south westMany have been left searching for solutions as the job market still requires measures to drastically reduce unemployment.

Figures released recently by the Office for National Statistics show unemployment has risen once again. There are now 175,000 unemployed people in the south west. Nationally unemployment is 2.68 million, up 118,000 on the quarter.

Carmen Watson, Managing Director of Pertemps Recruitment Partnership, said, ‘Although there has been a boom in temporary employment over Christmas, this is the time when the greatest challenge will be presented to

the job market as many industries enter a quieter period. Retail in particular has taken a battering at the start of the year with the failure of high street stores bringing about job losses.

‘The key step to reviving the employment picture in the south west is focussing on enhancing skills and considering roles in industries where there is still a call for talented, hard working people. This will require a greater deal of flexibility on the part of applicants and an amenable, yet determined attitude. Jobs are still out there but in many situations they may be in areas you might not have thought of.’

How accurate is the news & media - is it a true reflection of the Dorset & Hampshire area?By Liz Davies, Director, Dovetail Recruitment

Every time we pick up a newspaper or listen to the news all we hear is doom and gloom. Companies are shedding their workforce, unemployment is rising and the Eurozone is teetering on the brink.

Here in Dorset, just a couple of months ago, we were recruiting for a college leaver to work for a successful and expanding client in the Bournemouth area. A simple request - we were looking for someone with no work experience, good PC skills, eager to learn and grow with the company. After listening to the news that evening and hearing how many youngsters are unemployed I thought the recruitment would be a doddle and we would be deluged with candidates.

Well I was shocked and stunned and could not understand why we had a very poor response to our advertisements.

We advertised the vacancy utilising all the new technology as well as our more traditional methods and included the local colleges. We just could not understand where all these unemployed school or college

leavers were in the Bournemouth area. Eventually we had a short list of just three candidates and managed to successfully fill the role.

We discussed this problem with our local branch of Connexions and they advised that the (NEET) unemployment figure for the 16 - 19 year olds has dropped from 8.4% to 5.6% in the last two years in the Bournemouth area - now where is that being reported - a step in the right direction for our local youngsters.

So not all doom and gloom as our newspapers and media suggest.

Liz Davies

Sunshine Care has announced that it is recruiting 110 more people. Due to the significant expansion of its home care services in Dorset and the south west region, together with the growth of its dementia care and end-of–life care

services, Sunshine Care needs to recruit 85 new care and support workers. In addition to this, 25 more nursing agency staff are required to cater for the growth in demand for its complex care and 24-hour live-in care services.

HEALTHY STAFF CAN HELP CUT iNSURANCE PREmiUmSHaving a fit and healthy workforce

should be considered a strategic priority for every business advises Susan Reeves, Director and head of healthcare and private medical insurance at Alan & Thomas Insurance Group.

‘As we enter a new year, people’s minds tend to focus on getting fit and healthy and there are ways that employers can encourage this and make sure those resolutions don’t get forgotten about come spring time or even earlier!’

Healthcare provision for employees is now being offered in a growing number of companies and not just in the large multi-nationals. As well as providing protection, most private medical insurance (PMI) policies also provide ancillary services, which enables companies to maximise their investment. Discounts for gym membership, fitness equipment and sports therapy for example are often included and would be a welcome incentive for staff to look after their wellbeing.

‘It really is in the best interests of employers to communicate all of the benefits of their scheme as a fit and healthy workforce can result in greater staff engagement, reduced absenteeism and increased levels of productivity. Furthermore, a healthy workforce will then lead to reduced claims and consequently reduced healthcare premiums,’ advises Susan.

‘Having PMI in place as part of the employee benefits package has also been found to help with staff retention and recruitment.’

Alan & Thomas’ specialist healthcare division advises businesses on the most appropriate private medical insurance scheme for them. As an independent, the Poole-based broker works closely with a number of the UK’s largest insurers so can offer companies bespoke cover tailored to their specific needs. Alan & Thomas also specialise in health cash plans, which are low cost health plans for employees that pay cash sums towards the cost of a wide range of treatments.

Three-storey, beachfront coastal sports venue gets green light in Bournemouth

Bournemouth Borough Council has approved plans submitted by RTPI Planning Consultancy of the Year Terence O’Rourke, to build a new home for Westover and Bournemouth Rowing Club on Bournemouth’s seafront. The project, known as the

Bournemouth Coastal Sports Hub (BCSH), is expected to meet the growing interest in coastal sports and attract more visitors to the area.

Very few buildings have been developed on Bournemouth seafront in recent years and the BCSH will be the first community-orientated sports hub of its type on this section of the south coast. It also comes at a time when Bournemouth Borough Council is looking to revitalise the seafront as part of its Town Centre Master Vision.

Acheson Construction of Dorchester has completed the building of the Olympic village on Portland which will house the competitors and team officials taking part in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games for the sailing events. This is a development of 77 residential units with associated external works which has been built on the former Naval Officer’s playing field at Osprey Quay, Portland.

Acheson was the preferred contractor and worked closely with the client, ZeroC Holdings Ltd on the project costs during the bid to secure the site. This was a successful collaboration and the company then worked with the client during the detailed planning submission phase, advising on design, build-ability issues, value engineering and life cycle costing. Following planning approval, Acheson developed the planning designs to the full, detailed construction stage and all houses were constructed to the code set out for sustainable homes at level 4.

Shortly after construction commenced, the client introduced the London Organising Committee for Olympic Games (LOCOG) to the potential of leasing the completed units to them, for use as the Athletes’ Village for the sailing events during both the Olympic and Paralympic games and this too was successful. Revised contractual arrangements were agreed with LOCOG, and their requirements were seamlessly incorporated into the existing design.

Portland’s Olympic Village completedDelivery and quality are key issues for LOCOG and these were

monitored monthly. The project continued to meet all target milestones, which were set eight weeks in advance of contractual milestones; the project was handed over on time and completed to the high standards set by LOCOG and ZeroC Holdings.

The developers of the site, ZeroC Holdings Ltd, are also based in Dorchester and Acheson is currently working with them on other sites in Yeovil, Somerset and Chichester, Sussex. ZeroC Holdings is a highly practiced, financially buoyant sustainable developer. The firm is energy and carbon conscious and has been building low carbon homes and commercial buildings for over ten years. Its portfolio of developments reflects the fact that it is able to successfully deliver an impressive range of styles, designs and specifications, from traditional architecture to cutting-edge contemporary design. ZeroC Holdings’ homes demonstrate enviable space standards that respect the buyer; its -bedroom houses are generally the size of a volume house builder’s 4-bedroom house.

ZeroC is resourced to deliver in excess of 200 homes a year and has consents, or subject to planning options, for over 1,500 homes, offices and commercial buildings including housing on the much acclaimed Prince Charles development of Poundbury in Dorchester. The industry recognises ZeroC as a respected pioneer in sustainable development. The company leads the way in delivering outstanding design led homes that are environmentally and economically effective. ZeroC is delighted that this has been celebrated through a number of significant awards and accolades.

At a recent topping out ceremony world record holder Jonathan Edwards unveiled a plaque and commented that ‘another milestone had been reached in the preparation of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics competition.’ He also thanked all partners who had contributed to ‘the creation of this high quality accommodation so close to the sailing venue’ and said ‘most importantly, the development is a significant contribution to the revival of the Osprey Quay area.’

Hotel inspires future chefs and hoteliers of tomorrow Students from the Bournemouth and Poole College were given a flash course in modern day hospitality when they recently visited Bournemouth’s Hallmark Hotel. The hotel, which was recently awarded the title of the town’s ‘Hotel of the Year’, arranged a full day of activities to help promote what working in a top hotel is all about.

The students were given a full insight into all the main areas of the hotel’s operations.

General Manager of the hotel, Helen Hall, added, ‘We were delighted to host the students from Bournemouth and Poole College. They were able to find out more about the industry and about us as a hotel. Education takes on so many various guises and we hope that this may inspire one or two of them to consider future careers in hospitality.’

One of the attending students said, ‘We really learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes. It’s incredible how much work goes into running a successful hotel – it truly is non-stop!’

A charitable causeBournemouth-based WebPurity recently ran its first training seminar on blogging and social media. The day long event was attended by many local companies, and was offered free to charities.

Andy Larkin, Director of WebPurity, commented, ‘We saw

an opportunity to help out local charities and were overwhelmed by the response. It really has made us think about running a charities only event. At the end of the day these charities stand to benefit the most from social media training, and that’s what it’s all about.’

The content of the training was delivered by internet marketing guru Suraj Sodha who has a wealth of experience in on-line promotion.

If you would like further information on future training courses you can contact Andy on 0800 756 5620 or e-mail [email protected]

The first 10 charities to respond will be offered a free place at the next available course.

Forum warns government over plans to ditch school work experience placementsThe Forum of Private Business has expressed concern at government proposals to scrap mandatory work experience for GCSE pupils.

The not-for-profit support group warned in a letter to the Department for Education – which is currently consulting on plans to remove the statutory requirement for Key Stage 4 (14–16 year olds) pupils to complete at least two weeks of work experience – that doing so will further reduce the number of work-ready youngsters entering the job market.

In fact, the forum says that far from removing the current provision, the government should be looking at expanding work experience placements to further ready youngsters on the brink of starting their working lives.

The site will be handed back to ZeroC Holdings after the Games and the houses will be placed on the open market in September at affordable prices and will be referred to as ‘The Officer’s Field Development’. 19 homes will be transferred to Magna Housing to be used as social housing. Kim Slowe said, ‘Developers very rarely get the opportunity to participate in such a high profile event and the Officer’s Field Development has the added bonus that it is delivering much needed, high quality, sustainable housing to Portland at affordable prices.’

Baqus Denley King was appointed to provide comprehensive pre contract consultancy services and post contract Employers Agent and CDM Coordination services. Baqus, together with Acheson Construction, LOCOG and Zero C as part of a development team remained focused throughout the three years of development, ensuring the highest possible standard of accommodation for the games, together with a post games sustainable conversion into open market and affordable housing. Baqus Director Toby Welstead confirmed, ‘It has been a pleasure working with such a committed construction and client team,

I am sure the athletes will have only good things to report about the development.’

HTC of London was the appointed architect and the development is currently being considered for Daily Telegraph British Homes Award and the Building magazine ’Housing project of the year’ award.

Acheson Construction is one of the leading contractors within the south and south west and has an excellent track record across a broad range of construction projects, including social housing, health, leisure, commercial, industrial, residential and education.

‘Our commitment to quality is of paramount importance and we deliver on time, on budget and we work towards understanding our client’s needs and then achieving them without compromise’, said Rob Acheson of Acheson Construction.

We are pleased to have worked with Acheson Construction on the Olympic Village project.

The Footprints Project trains volunteers from the community to mentor men and women returning to local neighbourhoods.

Fifteen hundred ex offenders, who have served their prison sentence, anxiously await release back into Bournemouth or Poole to start afresh and to try to avoid those substances or situations which have caused such havoc to their lives and to those of their families. If they can avoid those, they stand a higher chance of not re-offending but how to do this with no help; the help of faithful friends and family has long since been abused and exhausted. Footprints works with over 100 men and women each year.

Mentoring is supporting, encouraging, challenging, praising and walking alongside these human beings who have committed crimes but served their time and are trying to change. Mentoring is helping the mentees to help themselves, guiding them, sharing life experiences with them, accompanying them and helping them to reach the goals they want to achieve.

By becoming involved with Footprints as volunteers, as donors, as facilitators, as supporters, you and your businesses will enable ex offenders to access safe accommodation, a secure income, attend to their substance misuse issues, engage in training, volunteering or work. Your input can help raise their self esteem and confidence and enable them to re-integate into their local communities and repair relationships. You will help them to get their lives on track and to be in a position to give something back to society, and you will be helping to reduce the risk of them reoffending.

Footprints is looking for volunteers as mentors and drivers. Clients need work placement or apprenticeship opportunities. The Footprints Project also requires help with PR and is in need of venues and support to host fundraising events.

If you can help in any way, or for more information call Jane Barkes, Project Manager on 01305 757217.

Frettens Solicitors is delighted to announce the fourth solicitor to join the firm in five months. Kelly Taylor has been recruited as a solicitor in the Wills & Tax Team.

Kelly qualified as a solicitor in 2009 and joins Frettens from local firm Harold G Walker. She has significant experience in all aspects of will writing, estate administration and also has a particular interest in personal tax planning.

Partner and head of the Wills & Tax Team, Lee Young, says, ‘Kelly is an excellent solicitor and I am confident that she will be great addition to our team. It has been an extremely busy period for the department and we are delighted to have found such a capable and approachable adviser to match the high quality standards

Consultant solicitor ‘scores’ with first big deal for law firm

L-r: Ellis Jones Managing Partner Nigel Smith; Consultant Solicitor Hugh Craig; AFC Bournemouth Chairman Eddie Mitchell and Chief Executive Neill Blake.

New ‘signing’ Hugh Craig scored big-time in his first major deal for Bournemouth law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors. The consultant solicitor successfully represented interests associated with Maxim Demin in the acquisition of a 50% shareholding in the League One club AFC Bournemouth from Jeff Mostyn and Steve Sly.

According to Nigel Smith, Ellis Jones’ Managing Partner, the deal was a significant ‘feather in the cap’ for the law firm.

Nigel added, ‘To say Hugh is one of our best signings is an understatement. It’s great to have him as part of the Ellis Jones’ team.’

Formerly a senior partner with a city law firm in London, Hugh was

latterly a consultant specialising in corporate and commercial work. His extensive experience includes the purchase and sale of businesses and companies, particularly acting for restaurants and companies in the leisure industry.

‘Having virtually retired from my London practice, I welcomed

the opportunity to become a consultant with a local law firm with such a strong business clientele,’ Hugh said. ‘I’ve been a keen AFC Bournemouth supporter since moving to the area ten years ago so working on this deal was particularly interesting and enjoyable.’

To sign or not to sign… is there a middle ground?

Many businesses now use standard terms and conditions (STCs) as the document of choice to record the basis on which they sell their goods or services. It is common practice to not get STCs signed, but instead refer to them in sales documentation or to just send a copy to the customer. This method of contracting does present legal risks, the key one being that the supplier’s STCs may not actually apply at all

(with the sting in the tail often being that the purchaser’s STCs govern the sale instead). Of course, in an ideal world signatures are preferable, but the commercial reality is quite different and, as always, the solution will be a compromise. Having a simple contracting strategy in place is a really good way of channelling the business focus (and resource) by deciding at what point signed STCs or even an individually negotiated contract is needed. In essence this is really about the business making informed decisions based on its assessment of risk.

New data privacy lawsUK firms face potentially crippling fines if they breach new EU data privacy laws proposed recently (‘Draft Data Protection Bill’). Star, a UK provider of cloud computing services, suggests this knee jerk reaction by Brussels to pending US Patriot Act legislation may stifle innovation at the very time that UK businesses need to focus on funding growth initiatives through innovation

Clearly consumers can be exposed and need legislation to protect their businesses. However businesses dictate their own contractual terms and compensation remedies should things go wrong with their suppliers and so are already protected under contract law.

Star advises UK businesses to do their homework and make sure their data is always held in UK data centres and that contracts are well detailed with the appropriate terms to protect businesses and their customer data.

Kelly follows three other recruits since August 2011; Kerry Houston-Kypta joined as a Commercial Property Solicitor, followed by specialist Planning & Environmental Solicitor David Fairbairn and Family Solicitor Heidi Cardoza.

Lee concludes, ‘The firm as a whole is experiencing a period of steady growth and we have also needed to recruit to our Property and Family Teams recently to manage increasing volumes of work. This is particularly encouraging and Frettens is looking forward to a positive and busy year in 2012.’

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) recently secured its first conviction under the Bribery Act 2010 (the Act) which came into force on 1st July 2011.

While such prosecution demonstrates that the court is prepared to vigorously enforce the provisions of the Act, it should be noted that it is not only

individuals who need to consider their exposure to prosecution under its provisions.

Companies are widely exposed to prosecution under the Act as they can now also be found responsible for any acts of bribery instigated or accepted by their employees, agents, subsidiaries, distributors or any other person who performs services for or on their behalf, both in the UK and abroad.

Munir Patel, a clerk at Redbridge Magistrates Court was given a three year sentence for accepting bribes from approximately 5 road traffic offenders, who paid him in order to avoid their fines, penalty points and driving disqualifications. Over the course of a year the CPS

which are now widely exposed to prosecution under the Act. Now that the court has illustrated that it is prepared to vigorously enforce the provisions of the Act against an individual, companies should note that the only defence available to them is to show that they have adequate procedures in place designed to prevent acts of bribery occurring.

Tracey Wood and Frances Miles, Directors, Jobshop UK

When Tracey Wood and Frances Miles first set up the Poole Business Women’s Lunch Club (PBWLC )12 years ago, it was the first of its kind in the area. Back then, not only were there no networking groups specifically aimed at local business women, those women that attended the general networking meetings were few and far between.

‘We saw a gap in the market,’ explained Tracey Wood. ‘And we wanted to create a group where like-minded business women could come to meet, inspire and support each other in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Our presentations are always topical and we try to choose subjects which will be of benefit to both the sole trader and the business woman working as part of a multi-national organisation.’

The Poole Business Women’s meetings are held at Storm Fish Restaurant, which itself is owned by Frances and her husband, Pete Miles.

2012 is filled with interesting and enlightening speakers including Natasha Jones on 8th March who is the founder of Leaf Charity and winner of the Langtry Manor Special Woman Award 2011. 19th April brings Poole businessman, Mark Constantine of LUSH cosmetics and on 17th May there will be a presentation from Lara Morgan, a business woman who sold her company for 20 million and now advises other businesses on achieving their goals. On 14th June, Sue Cowell of the Cobweb Company and winner of the Langtry Manor PR Initiative Award 2011, and in November Erica Dent from Enjoy Discovering Wine will be the main speaker on the 8th. 2012 will end with the highly popular Christmas cookery demonstration on the 6th December, when Storm chef, Paolo Alleva, will be demonstrating how to cook up some mouth watering delights!

industry news

Business leaders will gather at the EEF National Manufacturing Conference and Manufacturers’ dinner on Tuesday 6th March 2012 to explore global competitiveness and urge government to use its spring Budget to spur industrial-led growth.

Manufacturers can direct their timely messages to Chancellor George Osborne, who is guest speaker at the biennial EEF Manufacturers’ Dinner. Business Secretary Vince Cable and

Leader of the Opposition Ed Miliband are also confirmed as keynote conference speakers.

Terry Scuoler, EEF Chief Executive, said, ‘The timing of the conference, just ahead of the Budget, is absolutely critical. It will be a powerful rally call to government to place manufacturing at the heart of its strategy for growth and to present a visionary Budget that bolsters economic recovery through bold measures to support industrial expansion and international trade.

‘Our conference theme is “Competitiveness in the Global Economy” and it will be a rare opportunity for the country’s manufacturing leaders to gather together to challenge political decision makers on the issues that matter most, share best practice, stimulate debate, solve problems, and gain industry insights and connections.’

Road test: Volvo S60By Tim Saunders

Breeze Volkswagen celebrates up! award winWith order books fully open for Volkswagen’s new city car, the up!, Tower Park-based motor dealership Breeze Volkswagen has another reason to celebrate following the award-winning announcement that the vehicle has been named ‘Small Car of the Year’ ahead of its official spring 2012 launch date.

The new Volkswagen up! is the motor manufacturer’s smallest car to date and has been voted as ‘Small Car of the Year’ by the staff of UK’s best-selling motoring title, TopGear magazine, as well as the BBC’s ever-popular television show. Judges said the car ‘is the cleverest small car around today’.

With an exceptional, top five-star rating from Euro NCAP for vehicle safety, the Volkswagen up! offers space for four, the latest technology and highly economical engines. Priced from £7,995, and rising to £11,180, the up! will be available with two 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine options as well as a BlueMotion technology version; it will have three doors and three trim levels – Take up!, Move up! and High up! – plus a special edition, the up! black and up! white.

FAMILY OPENS NEW VEHICLE HIRE CENTRE

Jane and Dave Wolfenden launch the new hire centre with daughter Sophie (1st left) Tom and Toby (right).

Abacus, the Dorset based vehicle hire specialist, has launched its new Vehicle hire centre in Andover. The family run firm purchased the former Trim Truk Ltd site on Andover’s Weyhill Road in May (2011) for a figure exceeding £1m and has now completed a £200,000 refit.

There is further room for expansion as the neighbouring land, formerly owned by Shell UK, has more recently been acquired by the company for an undisclosed sum.

Efficient luxury. Two words that rarely go together. Admittedly the Lexus hybrid is meant to be the solution but in my opinion it isn’t because it’ll only cover around 00 miles

a tank under normal driving conditions. But the Volvo S60 just might successfully marry these two ideals. The

stylish and supremely comfortable the 1.6-litre DRIVe version will return around 65mpg and produces just 114g/km of carbon dioxide – less than most hatchbacks. However, the overall package results in a marriage of compromise – but then aren’t they all?

You see while the S60 looks sporty thanks to the fact that it sits low to the ground, the eco-friendly engine doesn’t pack the expected powerful punch. Don’t get me wrong it’s not bad but the gears have to be worked hard to get the best results. The clunky six-speed gearbox could be smoother, too. But its engine stop/start is one of the most effective I have come across, switching off almost every time the vehicle stops, as it should do. You’d be surprised though how temperamental these systems can be, for instance the one on the Toyota Prius only cuts in if you’re gentle with it. The Swede is far less picky.

When the S60 was launched in 2000 there was no denying that it was cumbersome, in common with many executive saloons of that era. The second generation model, which was introduced two years ago, has a more curvaceous design making it feel a more compact vehicle. There are hints of both Audi and Mercedes about the exterior particularly around the front. When locked the wing mirrors automatically fold up, which is a useful feature.

Inside the well-styled and curved dashboard favours the driver while all features are easy to operate. Gone is the traditional handbrake, more’s the pity -

instead there’s a small switch, which takes a little getting used to. There’s a bit of road noise but generally it’s quiet and refined although the engine can be vocal under pressure.

Sitting in the leather upholstered seats is a joy that leaves driver and passengers relaxed at the end of a long journey. The doors shut with a satisfying thud as they always have done on Volvos and inside there’s a plethora of luxury features including heated front seats, all-round electric windows and air conditioning. Of course it’s ultra-safe, too. At night the illuminated instrument panel reflects on the windscreen and although this is out of the driver’s eye-line it can be irritating. A driver’s footrest would be appreciated. The boot is a reasonable size.

Parkers, the car experts, write: ‘Volvo’s last s60 came close, but not close enough to unseating, or even unsettling the German’s dominance of the small exec class. this time could be very different. the new small s60 has style, an innovative well-made interior, pioneering pedestrian-in-the-road sensing safety equipment and a new range of five-cylinder engines. Even braver, the swedish firm claims its s60 is the sportiest car it has ever made.’

The new S60 should appeal to environmentally conscious execs seeking to make a good impression. In my opinion it’s far more pleasing than a hybrid as it will cover over 700 miles on a tank.

Prestigious chef visits Cygnets Restaurant

Catering and Hospitality Students and Lecturers with Callum Lench (second from right)

Fifty five guests were treated to a sensational three course meal at Cygnets Restaurant cooked by Weymouth College Catering

students under the careful instruction of former Executive Chef of Marco Pierre White’s top end restaurant ‘Kings Road Steakhouse and Grill’, Callum Lench on Thursday 12th January.

Callum spent all day working and instructing Young Apprentices and Level 2 full-time students to deliver the three course dinner.

Callum started his career in the catering industry as the 14-year old protégé of Weymouth College Chef Lecturer, Jamie Purser who taught him everything he needed to know in the field. After working together for four years at the Crown Hotel Blandford, it was Jamie who then encouraged young Callum to head to London to gain further experience.

Callum went on to become Sous Chef for a new prestigious restaurant in London before applying for the job with Marco Pierre White, which after an 18 hour trial, Callum was offered the role of Executive Chef at the ‘Kings Road Steakhouse and Grill’.

As well as being head hunted for Disney aboard their cruise ships as Head Chef for their fine dining restaurants and working at numerous high-end London Restaurants, in the last six months Callum has created his own patisserie ‘cake’ in Parkstone, Poole. All the catering students gained new skills from the afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Guest Chef Night was the third of the theme nights offered at Cygnets Restaurant, Weymouth College this academic year. If you would like to book for any of the themed evenings, call for more information about the next available dates on 01305 208979.

major development at Silverstone

RTPI Planning Consultancy of the Year, Terence O’Rourke Ltd, has obtained a resolution to grant planning permission for major development at Silverstone Circuit on behalf of Silverstone Holdings Ltd.

Both Aylesbury Vale District Council and South Northamptonshire council have resolved to approve the outline application, which supports the venue’s 20-year masterplan.

Approval of the outline plans marks the next big step towards securing the long-term future of the international venue and, once complete, the development is set to further strengthen Silverstone’s position not only as the home of the Formula 1™ British Grand Prix, but also as one of Britain’s most important assets in the high performance engineering sector.

The outline application, which is currently awaiting a section 106 agreement following resolution to grant, incorporated plans for a business park, technology park, education campus and three hotels. In addition it featured spectator and ancillary facilities, with a welcome centre, museum and improved leisure and event spaces, including a kart track and outdoor stage. It also outlined plans for other ancillary development, encompassing landscape works, hardstanding and a support paddock, a bridge and tunnel to improve pedestrian flows, a new point of access, supporting infrastructure and demolition.

It is expected that the development will create around 8,400 permanent jobs with firms and activities attracted to the site, plus an average of around 550 construction jobs per annum throughout the development phase. Approximately 4,800 of these jobs are likely to be directly related to the masterplan development.

£2.6m facility completed for City Link Property business MAG Developments has announced the completion of a new £2.6m depot facility – purpose-built for express delivery company City Link – on its Aviation Business Park at Bournemouth Airport.

The new 5,295 sq ft depot is home to 100 staff, handling some 25,000 deliveries and 18,000 collections every week – and covers a geographical area from Salisbury down to Weymouth, and from Lyme Regis across to New Milton.

Steve Jones, General Manager of City Link’s Bournemouth depot, said, ‘The previous building served a useful purpose over an eight-year period but in those eight years our customer base and the expectations of our customers have seen a dramatic change. With these extra demands this new, purpose-built facility was overdue.’

The completion of this latest project marks a total, recent investment of over £6m in Aviation Business Park by MAG Developments, the property development arm of the owner of Bournemouth Airport, Manchester Airports Group.

Winter weather warning Property insurance broker, Deacon is highlighting the importance of protecting blocks of flats against any potential damage.

Deacon’s Head of Business, Penny Jepson, explains, ‘We carried out some Management Intelligence research last year, which revealed that 11% of the insurance claims received by us were as a result of the adverse winter. Customers were claiming for damage caused by a mixture of weight of snow, storms and frozen or burst pipes.’

These findings are backed up by recent ABI figures, which show that 2010’s December freeze saw 450,000 customers helped by insurers, with 10,000 claims for burst pipe damage alone.

relocation & refurbishment

relocation & refurbishment

Soaring success at LaSHamRaymond Brown Minerals & Recycling has transformed Lasham Airfield using recycled material from the site itself to create one of the largest private glider parks in the country.

Before its refurbishment, the airfield near Alton in Hampshire which is home to the Lasham Gliding Society, had six unused concrete areas which limited the landing space for gliders.

Hampshire-based RBMR transformed the facilities by excavating the concrete strips and infilling with over 2,700 tons of soil from another part of the site to create a natural

landscape, providing gliders with more space to land.

The 3,250 tons of excavated concrete was crushed on site and the recycled material was used to create a 400 sq m glider park on the part of the site from which the soil had been previously excavated.

Now complete, the airfield has a permanent hardstanding for 100 gliders to park.

RBMR Works Manager Ricky Steele said, ‘This has been a really interesting project for the minerals team, not least because I was given the opportunity to go up in a glider.’

Bournecoast ranked no. 1

Matthew Deakin

Property Agents Bournecoast has announced that it has reached pole position in Rightmove’s rankings of local agent performance.

The Dorset firm achieved first out of 76 agents for available properties listed by its lettings department. This is due in part to the incredibly successful launch of the new Westbourne office which has generated an influx of new instructions registered by the residential lettings team.

Bournecoast has become very successful at attracting new landlords, not least because of a solid track record of having successfully let a large volume of stock to good quality tenants. These tenants have to go through a rigorous vetting process by their experienced in-house

referencing team. The latter four months in 2011 saw Bournecoast let an astonishing 125 properties bucking the trend of what is historically renowned as a largely subdued period for the rental market.

making buildings work for you

Steady progress for 2012 predicts Persimmon Homes Wessex

Steve Roche

Steve Roche, Managing Director for Persimmon Homes Wessex, one of the region’s leading housebuilders, spoke about his forecast for the 2012 housing market.

Mr Roche said, ‘We’re currently expecting both prices and sales volumes during 2012 to remain similar to those in 2011 as the market remains stable.

‘All forecasts are of course dependent on continued economic stability and in this respect our industry is no different to any other.

‘The government has recently announced a series of initiatives to stimulate the housing market. We’re fully supportive of the 95% mortgage indemnity scheme, which we expect to see implemented by the spring of next year. This scheme will make a significant impact later in the year, as it will improve mortgage lending for first time buyers.

‘We will continue to work with the government to support the new draft National Policy Planning Framework, which could substantially improve the supply of residential planning consents to address the significant shortfall in new homes construction across the UK.’

Many buildings are poorly designed or do not meet the needs of the current user. When making alterations, many people do not use a professional to design the building work, and the result is often a missed opportunity for improvement, or worse, a building that does not do what it is supposed to do.

A Chartered Building Surveyor can add value to a scheme by designing the building work from scratch, or more usually taking a client’s vision and turning it into a space that really works; whether it be an extension to accommodate a growing family, converting a redundant building into a microbrewery, or altering a school to provide a welcoming reception area.

If you are considering carrying out building work, you may need to go through the following stages: consideration of the feasibility or options and how much it will cost;

New Year’s Resolution?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO), introduced in 2005, has fundamentally changed the way fire safety provisions are determined in public and commercial buildings. Fire authorities no longer issue fire certificates and those previously in force now have no legal standing.

The onus for most aspects of fire safety in public and commercial premises now falls to the building owners, operators and custodians to fulfil. Central to the approach is the principle of risk assessment from which the requirements for fire protection are determined in accordance with a classification provided under British Standard BS589 Part 1.

Compliance to the RRO can only be achieved through a formal fire risk assessment and followed-up by a competent person or body with the appropriate specialist expertise.

The RRO further requires that records be maintained to show that staff members are competent to deploy and apply the equipment (for example fire extinguishers) and procedures (e.g. fire drills) necessary.

Wessex Fire and Security provides a comprehensive fire protection service to companies and sites across the South West of England. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your fire protection obligations please do not hesitate to contact us.

Project monitoring appointment

Unit 1, Coldharbour Business Park

Goadsby Building Consultancy has been appointed to specify, tender and monitor the refurbishment and tenant fit out of a 15,000 sq ft office building on a prominent business park in Sherborne.

Graeme Harper of Goadsby Building Consultancy comments, ‘Our involvement in construction projects such as this extends from the initial feasibility of a project, preparation of a specification and

contract documents, through to monitoring the project on site ensuring the work is complete to a satisfactory standard and agreeing the final account. Our involvement in a construction project provides the client with the ease of mind that cost, quality and programme are being controlled at all times.’

Enquiries set to rise as new office launched

From far left, clockwise: Nik Cox of Hughes Ellard, Andy Gibbs of Vail Williams, renaming-competition winner Nick Tutton of CBRE (centre), and Andy Goodridge and Tim Titheridge of City Estates.

A lack of high-grade office space in the M27 corridor is set to drive occupier enquiries for the only speculative building of its kind in south Hampshire. Regional commercial property developer City Estates has acquired the freehold to the 2,560 sq ft (2,189 sq m) new property at Botleigh Grange Office Campus, Hedge End, near Southampton, in a joint venture with Helical Bar Plc.

The vacant building, formerly known as Phoenix House and built in 2008, was recently bought for an undisclosed price. Now called The Pavilion, following a renaming competition, the building is set for a new lease of life.

Nix Cox of real estate adviser Hughes Ellard, which has offices in Southampton and Fareham, is marketing the property on behalf of the new landlord. Vail Williams acted for the private seller and

will also be retained to market the property.

Nik said, ‘These are superb offices, speculatively built, and we anticipate keen interest from various businesses with relocation and/or expansion requirements because there is simply not enough Grade A office space available generally.

‘Demand is out there, as shown by the fact that 50,000 sq ft (2,516 sq m) of office transactions were recorded in the first nine months of 2011 in the Solent Corridor in Hampshire, 100,000 sq ft (9,290 sq m) more than the annual average.’

He added, ‘The property, with its impressive central double-height reception and service core, allows for a single occupant or the ground and first floors could be divided up to suit up to four individual tenants.’

The quoting rent is £18.75 per sq ft.

PRIME MINISTER: New year’s resolution to kill off damaging health & safety culture and boost business growth

Tackling the compensation culture and trivial claims being made against businesses and freeing SMEs

from the stranglehold of health and safety red tape are part of measures announced to back enterprise by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Speaking to an audience of small businesses and entrepreneurs hosted by SME Intuit UK in Maidenhead, the Prime Minister announced that:

To tackle the compensation culture and address the fear from businesses of being sued for trivial or excessive claims – we will extend the current scheme that caps the amount that lawyers can earn from small value personal injury claims, and reduce overall costs in cases funded by ‘no win no fee’ deals. This will help bring down the cost of many cases and deter the speculative health and safety claims made against good businesses that would appear not to have done anything wrong;

This measure is on top of our plans to change the health and safety law on strict liability for civil claims so that businesses are no longer automatically at fault if something goes wrong. Too often they are held responsible even if they have done everything they reasonably can to prevent an accident. That will now change too; and,

We will investigate the demands made by insurance companies on businesses to ensure that levels of compliance do not force businesses to go far beyond what is actually required by the law to secure their insurance cover. We will be writing to the chief executives of all the major insurance companies, asking them to set out what they will do to deal with this problem – and they will be invited to a meeting at Downing Street to set out their plans.

The Prime Minister also announced that next month we will be asking organisations to bid to manage the £1bn of government funding available through the Business Finance Partnership. This fund will help businesses access the finance they need to grow.

The measures announced build on the action the government has taken to tackle the culture of health and safety following the reports from Lord Young and Professor Löfstedt. Measures that the government are implementing include:

From 6th April, businesses will no longer have to report minor accidents in the workplace. An accident will now only have to be reported if an employee is off work for seven days or more;

That up to a million self-employed workers whose activities pose no risk of harm to others will be exempted from health and safety regulation completely. Freeing them from bureaucracy and needless assessments;

A new panel will give firms the right to challenge controversial inspection decisions; and,

The Health and Safety Executive has begun the task of abolishing or consolidating up to half of all existing regulations. The Prime Minister announced that he has asked for the timetable for abolition to be accelerated, so that by the end of 2012 we will have removed what is no longer necessary.
