WhO We ARe Program OverviewThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program is a Canadian university and college based, international co-op/internship program linking some of the best undergraduate and graduate students in the engineering, science, business and arts discipline from across Canada with highly committed Japanese businesses. The Canada-Japan Co-op Program formally integrates an undergraduate/graduate student’s Canadian academic studies with valuable work experience in a Japanese company. The program is open to universities and colleges nationally and is currently administered from The University of British Columbia.

MandateThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program’s mandate is to provide Canadian undergraduate and graduate students with career-related work experience with a Japanese company during their academic curriculum and at the same time to provide Japanese companies with the opportunity to employ highly capable and motivated Canadian students.

VisionThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program’s vision is to be the best program for Canadian undergraduate and graduate students wishing to complete Co-op work terms/internship in Japan and the leading international Co-op/internship program for Japanese employers requiring experienced and pre-qualified students.

MissionThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program’s mission is to provide top caliber Canadian undergraduate and graduate Co-op students with high quality career-oriented work opportunities in Japan as well as to provide participating Japanese employers with Canadian undergraduate and graduate students who can make valuable contributions to their organizations.

AMbAssADOR’s MessAGe The Embassy of Canada to Japan is pleased to support the Canada-Japan Co-op Program. For nearly a quarter-century, this program has helped facilitate international research collaboration, stimulate technology adoption and transfer, and promote mutual understanding between Canadian and Japanese people. Canadian students are provided the opportunity to work with innovative Japanese enterprises to obtain new skills and knowledge while contributing to the success of their host companies. The Program also enables Japanese firms and their employees to acquire a better knowledge of the people and culture of Canada and to gain a Canadian perspective on their work through the input of the highly educated and motivated student participants. DiReCtOR’s MessAGe It is my great pleasure to present to you the 2013/2014 CJCP Year End Report. Our pro-gram is now in its twenty-third year. Thanks to our industry partners we were successful in placing over 920 students who participated in CJCP during that time. These motivated students come from all across Canada to avail of invaluable opportunities in Japanese companies. They have exciting, hands-on experiences in industries ranging from Aerospace and Nanotechnology to Engineering Physics and Molecular Biology. This Year End Report highlights the success of the program in the last year where we have seen a 12 per cent increase in placements in comparison to 2012/2013. We secured work terms for 40 students from 11 institutions - 91 four-month co-op work terms in all. Frank Liu, a Clean Energy Engineering student from the University of British Columbia won the CJCP Student of the Year award. Frank writes about his enriching experience while working on meteorological simulation for solar and wind power generation at the Energy laboratory at Osaka Gas. Working in Japan was the realization of a lifelong dream for Frank who was fascinated by Japanese culture since he was very young. Our pre-departure training week took place on May 6th. It was a busy week where 29 students from ten different Canadian educational students participated in the training they needed before heading out on their work terms in Japan. I would like to thank Victor Leung who efficiently took over from our Program Assistant, Yuko Nemoto while she was on maternity leave. Yuko had an adorable son, Kenta and we look forward to her return in August 2014. Finally, I would like to thank our Japanese industry partners for their continued support of the Canada-Japan Co-op Program. This program provides a mutual benefit for both employers and students who partake in this program. We consistently hear from employers how young, fresh, Canadian co-op student minds have energized the work space that they join while employers help students to prepare for their future responsibilities when they graduate from university. 2013年度日加コー･オプ･プログラム (CJCP) 年報発行にあたりまして、一言ご挨拶申し上げます。CJCPは、お陰さまで、今年で23年目を迎えることができました。プログラム開始より、これまでに920名以上の学生を受け入れて下さいました企業各位に御礼を申し上げます。日本企業での貴重な研修機会を切望する学生は大変に多く、プログラムに参加する大学はカナダ全土にわたっています。学生達は、宇宙工学、ナノテクノジー工学、工学物理や分子生物学という多岐に渡った分野で、有意義な実務経験をしています。 今年度特筆すべきことは、11校の参加大学から40名の学生に研修期間が与えられたことで、昨年度に比べ、12パーセントも上回りました。これは、コー・オプの研修１学期を４ヶ月と考えると、合計91学期分確保できたことになります。 今年度のスチューデント･オブ･ザ･イヤーは、ブリティッシュ･コロンビア大学クリーンエネルギー工学のフランク リューに決まりました。フランクは、体験レポートの中で、大阪ガス、エネルギー技術研究所で行った、ソーラー、風力発電のための気象シュミレーションという充実した研修内容について触れています。日本での研修は、幼い頃から日本文化に魅せられていたフランクにとって、長年の夢が実現したことにもなりました。 今年の来日前のオリエンテーションは、参加大学10校から29名の学生が集って5月6日から実施されました。この一週間は、大変に忙しいものでしたが、日本での研修に必要な内容が網羅され、充実したものでした。 現在、プログラムアシスタントの根本優子が産休期間中で、代わってプログラムアシスタント業務を代行しているビクター･リオンに、ここで御礼の言葉を伝えたいと思います。根本は、2014年8月に復帰いたします。 最後になりましたが、CJCPを引き続きご支援下さる受け入れ企業各位に、心より感謝いたします。CJCPは、参加学生は勿論のこと、受け入れ企業にとっても有意義な機会を提供していると自負いたしております。受け入れ企業から常にお聞きするのは、若くて、フレッシュなカナダからの学生が職場の活性化に一役買い、同時に、学生は、卒業後に担うであろう仕事に対する責任感を学ぶ機会を日本企業で得ています。 プログラムへのお問い合わせ、ご質問は、604-822-6598 (電話)、jenny.reilly@ubc.ca までお気軽にご連絡下さい。 今後ともよろしくお願いいたします。

stuDeNt stAtistiCsPlacement History and Program Statistics: In 2013/2014, 40 Canadian undergraduate university students worked in 12 Japanese companies/locations for a total of 91 four-month Co-op work terms. Since the commencement of the program in 1991, 928 students have had the opportunity to work in Japan under the program. Ten students were employed in 11- to 12-month internships (three four-month Co-op work terms). Twenty-four students were employed in seven eight-month internships (two four-month Co-op work terms) and six students were employed in four-month internships (one four-month Co-op work term).

研修生受け入れ実績 2013/2014年度は、日本企業12社で40名（合計91学期）の学生が研修をしました。1991年のプログラム設立以来、928名の学生が日本企業で研修をしています。 40名の学生のうち、10名は11-12ヶ月 (3学期) 、24名は7-8ヶ月 (2学期) 、6名は4ヶ月 (1学期) の研修です。

APPLiCAtiON PROCess Students who meet the following criteria can apply to The Canada-Japan Co-op Program at any time during the year:

• Students must be from a member Canada-Japan Co-op College or University and enrolled in a Co-op Program; • Students must have completed at least one Japanese language course or have committed to com-pleting a course prior to departure to Japan;• Students must have completed at least one Co-op/internship work term in Canada prior to depar-ture to Japan;• Students should have at least one full-time academic term left to complete upon return from Japan;• Students must be flexible with respect to the type of work they accept, the duration of their work term and willingness to work in the

geographical location in which they may be placed; and • Students should possess a mature attitude and be enthusiastic about living and working in Japan. They should demonstrate a desire to learn

about the Japanese culture

Once students apply to The Canada-Japan Co-op Program, the Liaison Officer at their home institution provides an on-line recommendation of their application which is reviewed by The Canada-Japan Co-op Program. Once approved, students are activated on-line, have access to job postings and are eligible to apply for available work opportunities in Japan. Once a student has accepted a position with a Canada-Japan Co-op Program employer, he or she is required to participate in a one-week mandatory training week in Vancouver prior to departure.

があること 日加コー･オプ･プログラム申し込み希望学生は、在籍大学のコーディネーターと面接を行い、コーディネーターの推薦を受けた後、日加コー･オプ･プログラムで最終受け入れ審査を行います。最終的に受け入れが決まった学生に、参加企業の募集要項、業務内容が知らされます。 研修希望学生は、日本語の口答、又は、筆記による試験を受けます。その結果は、受け入れ希望企業に報告されます。内定が決まった学生は、日本での研修開始前にバンクーバーで行われるオリエンテーションに参加します。

eMPLOYeR PROFiLe Azbil Corporation We are pleased to announce that Sang Kon Lee, 2012 CJCP Alumnus, Mathematics, The University of Waterloo, received an award from his former work-term employer - Azbil Corporation (former Yamatake Corporation) in 2014. Azbil Corporation is a longtime employer of CJCP students and has hired over 50 from the Program since 1996. Sang Kon was awarded for his invaluable contribution to the team who presented the research paper “A Study of Optimizing Control Methods CFE for HVAC System” to an international symposium on Fluid Control, Measurement and Visualization held in Nara, Japan in November 2013. “My work in Azbil, from June 2012 to May 2013, mostly involved analyzing/evaluating algorithms used for HVAC. The control group was looking for optimized algorithms to compute optimal room conditions using software called modeFRONTIER. The team wanted me to simulate the algorithm computations with parallel computing. After the simulations ran, I needed to analyze the accuracy of various algorithms based on the generated data. The result was presented to the international conference FLUCOME. The presentation was prepared and delivered by a co-worker since the conference was held five months after I finished the internship. I was also asked to deliver a final presentation about my year of employment and personal life in Japan. It was a rewarding experience working in Azbil,” says Sang Kon. Mr. Kei Koga, Sang Kon’s supervisor at Azbil spoke highly of the student’s dedication and communication skills that helped raise the company profile.

受け入れ企業　紹介アズビル株式会社 2012年に日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP）に参加したSang Kon Lee　(ウォータールー大学、数学科)は、研修先であったアズビル株式会社より、研修期間中の成果が認められ、この度、アズビル株式会社より感謝状が授与されました。アズビル株式会社は、長年CJCPを支持して下さっている企業で、1996年から当プログラムの学生を50名以上採用いただいています。 Sang Konが研修中に携わった業務をまとめた論文“A Study of Optimizing Control Methods CFE for HVAC System” は、2013年11月に奈良で開催された流体の計測・制御・可視化に関する国際学会FLUCOME 2013で発表されました。 Sang Konのコメント。「2012年6月～2013年5月までのアズビルでの研修は、HVAC（冷暖房空調設備）で使用されるアルゴリズムの分析、評価に関わるものでした。僕が所属していたチームは、modeFRONTIERというソフトを使って、最適な室内条件を算出し、最適化アルゴリズムを研究していました。僕の仕事は、パラレル･コンピューティングで、アルゴリズム計算をシミュレーションすることでした。シミュレーションを行った後、算出されたデータを基に、様々なアルゴリズムの正確さを分析する必要がありました。その結果が2013年の国際会議で発表されました。国際会議は、僕が研修を終えてから5ヶ月後でしたので、準備と発表は、同僚によってされました。僕は、アズビルでの研修終了の際、1年の企業研修と日本での生活について、研修先チームにプレゼンテーションをしました。アズビルでの研修は、大変有意義な経験でした。」 Sang Konの受け入れ担当指導者であった基幹技術開発部コントロール技術グループの古賀圭氏は、社内評価を上げるのに一役買ったSang Konの地道な努力とコミュニケーション力を高く評価しているとおっしゃっています。

eMPLOYeR testiMONiALsTatsuhiko MaegawaInternational Internship Program Company: Fukui Byora Co., Ltd. Fukui Byora is a manufacturing company based in Awara-Shi, Fukui Prefecture, which specializes in manufacturing small products using cold forging technology. The company hires interns to work in three departments mainly: the Corporate Identity Department which promotes company products; the IT Department which controls various production management systems; and the Indirect Manufacturing Department where machines, molds, and die castings are developed. The company hires between two to three interns from The Canada-Japan Co-op program each year. The interns’ projects involve looking for pragmatic solutions to our needs. For example, projects at the Indirect Manufacturing Department attempt to improve direct production, such as jig durability and finite element analysis on metal deformation by the use of cold forging. Projects within the IT Department attempt to improve the use of data through various means related to iPad development. The Corporate Identity Department creates 3D graphic movies and ads for promoting the corporation to future clients. The internship’s duration is about 12 months long. Usually interns have never lived in Japan before, so they are given time to adjust for the first three months. Once they settle in and get familiar with the environment, they work up to speed. Sometimes interns process their jobs faster than the deadlines that they are given. In the past, I worked as an intern in Suffolk, England. Through various exchanges, I learned what it means to work beyond language and cultural barriers. As someone with first-hand knowledge of what it means to be an intern, I always wish the best for the students and encourage them to learn and make their internship experiences worthwhile.

前川達彦福井鋲螺株式会社 当社は福井県あわら市を拠点とする製造業です。極小パーツに特化した鋲螺製品を冷間圧造技術で生産しております。インターン生が学校で学んだスキルを活かし、さらに伸ばせる場が提供できること、また現場からの課題が集まりやすい場でもあることから、インターン生の受け入れ先は広報活動を行うCI室、生産管理システムをまかなう情報システム課、金型・機械を設計・製造する製造間接部門からの要望を基に年に2人～3人採用してます。 実践的なプロジェクトが多く、治具耐久度の長寿命化、冷間圧造で金属に対する塑性加工解析など製品生産に関わりがあり現場の改善を目指す課題もあれば、iPad開発、3Dグラフィックを使った広報活動用の動画や看板製作など社内のIT化や当社の広報活動で必要な素材を製作し活用する課題もあります。 当社での研修は1年近く行われます。インターン生は日本に住んだことがないことから最初戸惑いますが、3か月すると日本の生活に慣れ、仕事をこなすスピードも上がりプロジェクトが進みます。様々な仕事を与えますが、こちらが与えるより以上に仕事をこなすこともあります。 私はイギリスでインターンシップに参加した過去があります。言葉や文化の壁を越え様々な交流をし、企業で働くことの意義を学びました。インターンシップ経験者として、また当社での国際インターンシップ開始当初から携わる者として、学生には自分たちで 様々なことを学び、充実したインターンシップを送ってほしいと願っています。

Shigeaki NishinaCompany: Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd. Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd. has hired Co-op students from The Canada-Japan Co-op Program since 2013. The principles of our research institute are to promote advanced scientific and technological research and to scientifically understand the nature of findings from the research that will lead to future innovative technologies. One of our major objectives is to provide a unique research environment where students can experience a mixture of fundamental and applied research opportunities in the institute. Canada-Japan Co-op students work on various research projects such as speech interfaces, signal processing, and human-machine interface. All Canada-Japan Co-op students that we employ are highly motivated and possess adequate technical skills. They contribute greatly to our research. For example, in my current area of research we are trying to examine ways to achieve better interaction between human and machine in human-machine interface. Human perception, cognition, behaviour, and learning function are examined with scientific techniques. There are many challenges in such types of attempts at fact-finding as there are no specific methods to conduct these experiments thus the research involves a lot of trial and error. Although most Co-op students never did this type of analysis before nor had any background knowledge in the area, I was amazed by their thoughts and proactive suggestions. Students not only performed tasks as requested but also participated as able members of the project team. They also acquired excellent communication skills that they used in both discussions and research presentations. The Canada-Japan Co-op students not only help us with our research but their presence revitalizes our office when they come to work with us. We enjoy teaching Canada-Japan Co-op students technical skills during their time with us. We also enjoy expanding their knowledge of Japanese culture and the Japanese way of thinking and living while they are here. We hope that these students further expand their knowledge worldwide using the experience that they have gained during their time at our research institute.

Naoki KikuchiSteel Research Laboratory, Research Planning & Administration DepartmentCompany: JFE Steel Corporation JFE Steel Corporation welcomes 20-25 internship students to the Steel Research Laboratory every year. Steel Research Laboratory has 22 research departments. We research innovative process technologies and steel products. Our goal is to have one internship student per research department annually. We welcome foreign students worldwide, and the Canada-Japan Co-op Program (CJCP) is one of our main partners in this enterprise. Our company worked with CJCP before consolidating as JFE Steel (former Kawasaki Steel Corporation and NKK). Since 2007, JFE Steel has accepted one to four students from The Canada-Japan Co-op Program every year - in total about 20 Canada-Japan Co-op students. The internship program, thanks largely to the participation of students from CJCP, is of a very high calibre. The internship students are well educated. In fact, their involvement contributes to educating the JFE Steel researchers. Our researchers get a chance to review their research objectively when they discuss the processes and results with students.We thank Ms. Nemoto and other staff members for administrating the program, and hope to continue our collaboration in order to contribute to educating both JFE researchers and CJCP students.

菊池直樹JFEスチール㈱スチール研　研究企画部 JFEスチール㈱スチール研究所では、世界No.1研究所を目指し、海外インターンを20～25名を毎年受け入れています。スチール研究所は鉄鋼製品の製造における革新的製造プロセス・新商品の研究開発を行う22の研究部から構成されており、各研究部に毎年１名の海外インターン配置を目標としています。現在、世界各国の大学・研究機関からインターン受入れを行っていますが、CJCPはその中でも主要な連携先のひとつです。CJCPとは弊社統合前（旧川崎製鉄、NKK）からのお付き合いですが、JFEスチールとしては、2007年から毎年1～4名、これまで約20名の学生を受入れてきました。 弊社の研究員は、海外インターン受入を通じて、英語訓練だけでなく、自身の研究活動を客観的に見直し、議論する機会を与えられます。特にCJCPの学生は良く教育された優秀な学生が多く、研究に関連する深い議論や、積極的なコミュニケーションを通じて研究員の育成に貢献しています。 プログラム運営に当たり、根本さんをはじめとするスタッフの皆様のご尽力に感謝すると共に、これからもインターン学生、弊社研究員双方の育成に貢献できるよう連携継続して行きたいと思いますので、宜しくお願い致します。

各地（広島、岡山、神奈川、千葉）で研修中の14名のインターン学生が集い、製鉄所見学会、合同懇親会を実施。懇親会にはインターン学生14名、JFE担当者12名、スチール研幹部16名(合計42名)が参加。 Fourteen intern students got together from their respective sites in Hiroshima, Okayama, Kanagawa and Chiba. They went on a tour of the plant at Chiba and afterwards had a get-together party. Fourteen intern students, 12 JFE researchers (advisors from each research department) and 16 executive directors along with administration staff (42 members in total) attended the party.

stuDeNt OF the YeAR Frank LiuDiscipline: Clean Energy EngineeringInstitution: The University of British ColumbiaEmployer: Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. May 2013-December 2013 I missed the opportunity to avail of the Canada Japan Co-op Program (CJCP) when I did my undergrad, so when I came back to school a few years later as a Masters’ student, I applied for the program right away. The staff at the Canada Japan Co-op Program was extremely helpful during my job search. I was able to secure a position at the Energy Laboratory at Osaka Gas, where I worked on meteorological simulation for solar and wind power generation. At Osaka Gas, my co-workers were very nice to me. In fact, my main impression of Japan is that the people are friendly and polite. Everyone treated me with respect and was always willing to help. My supervisor Nishimura-san gave me good general guidance on how to conduct my research, but also gave me freedom to propose potential work methods. As a result, I was able to acquire many new skills during my time there. I have been interested in Japanese culture since I was young. Even though I studied Japanese for a couple of years I was barely able to speak the language before going to Japan. Once immersed in the environment, like many of the students, I was able to pick things up little by little. About six months into my time in Japan, I went on a trip with a few co-workers. During the trip, I, suddenly, found myself being able to speak Japanese, and was even able to throw in some jokes! It was such a great feeling. When Takemori-san, the vice head of the Energy Laboratory and longtime supporter of the CJCP, came to Vancouver to present me with the CJCP Student of the Year Award, he told me that I was always welcome back at Osaka Gas. When I heard him saying this I felt warm inside. I knew that I was fortunate to have such a wonderful opportunity; to live out a dream by joining CJCP and eventually working for Osaka Gas.

 

フランク　リューブリティッシュ･コロンビア大学　クリーンエネルギー工学2013年5月～2013年12月 大阪ガスエネルギー技術研究所学部生の時、日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP）に参加する機会を逃してしまったので、大学院へ戻ると決めた時、すぐに参加申し込みをしました。研修先を探すにあたり、CJCPのスタッフは、とても頼りになりました。そして、大阪ガスエネルギー技術研究所でソーラー、風力発電のための気象シュミレーションをする研修機会を得ることができました。 研修先の大阪ガスでは、同僚が大変親切にしてくださいました。実際のところ、私の一番の日本の印象と言えば、人々が親切で礼儀正しいということです。話しかけた人達は皆、私を気遣い、喜んで手を差し伸べてくれました。研修業務では、私の指導担当であった西村さんが私のリサーチの方向を導いて下さりながらも、私が業務に関わる提案をする時間が持てるように配慮して下さいました。その結果として、研修期間中に新しいスキルを多く習得することができました。 子供の頃から、日本文化に興味を持ち、数年、日本語を勉強していました。日本語での環境に慣れ親しんでいくうちに、多くの学生がそうであるように私も、少しずつ色々なことを理解していきました。日本での生活も約6ヶ月を迎えたある日、数人の同僚と旅行をしていた週末に、突然、日本語だけで会話がしている自分に気付きました。日本語で冗談さえ飛び出し、気分は最高でした。 大阪ガス、エネルギー技術研究所の副所長であり、長年に渡りCJCPの支持者である竹森さんがバンクーバーを訪れ、CJCPのスチューデント･オブ･ザ･イヤーを授与して下さった際に、｢君が大阪ガスに戻ってくるのなら、いつでも歓迎だよ｣の一言で、心が温かくなるのを感じました。それと同時に、CJCPに参加して、大阪ガスで研修するという素晴らしい機会に恵まれたことをこの上なく幸運なことだと思っています。

ALuMNi stORY Justin YanDiscipline: Mechanical Engineering, MechatronicsInstitution: University of British ColumbiaEmployer: Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Basic Research LaboratoriesJanuary 2013-August 2013 I remember sitting in my room doing homework when I received the call that I would be going to work in Japan. I applied and interviewed for multiple jobs through the CJCP and was anxiously waiting to hear if I secured a position. This news thankfully came and I happily accepted the job at NTT BRL. I remember thinking what a wonderful experience and how life changing it would be, but I never could have anticipated how true that would ring years later. Living in Japan allowed me the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the country. I went as far south as Hiroshima, up north all the way to Sapporo and more or less everywhere in between. Being able to see the culture of many distinct areas of Japan was extremely enlightening. However, some of my greatest memories from Japan don’t come from all the travelling, but from the people I encountered. I became great friends with many fellow CJCP students and have maintained those friendships to this day. Without them many of the trips I took would not be nearly as memorable.After initially feeling like a tourist I eventually began to feel more like a local. I loved going to my favourite restaurants to relax and talk with friends on a sunny Sunday afternoon. I also joined a local Kendo club halfway into my term and practiced there twice a week building relationships with the other locals who were part of the same dojo. These relationships and experiences outside of the normal tourist trips resound more in my memory than anything else. Since returning home I have come to realize that I am forever linked with Japan. Opportunities to interact with international students, act as a tour guide and become a program facilitator are all experiences that I don’t think would have otherwise occurred had I not participated in CJCP.When people ask me about Japan I always tell them that it was nothing short of amazing, yet I feel that sells the experience short. It is hard to put into words but the places I visited, people I met, things I did all contributed to an experience that can only be described as - you have to live it to believe it.

ジャスティン　ヤンブリティッシュ･コロンビア大学　電子機械工学専攻2013年1月～2013年8月　NTT物性科学基礎研究所 日本での研修が決まったと電話を受けた時、自分の部屋で宿題をしていたのを覚えています。日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP） を通して、いくつかのポジションに応募し、インタビューを受けて、内定が決まるか不安に待っているところでした。研修決定の知らせが飛び込んできて、NTT物性科学基礎研究所での研修内定を喜んで受けました。これが素晴らしい経験で、どのようにこれからの人生が変わるのだろうと思いを馳せていましたが、後に、実際にそのようになるとは想像もできませんでした。 日本に住んだことで、全国を旅して周る機会を得ました。南は広島、北は札幌まで、各地を旅行しました。日本各地の違った文化を見ることができたことは、とても有意義でした。ですが、日本での心に残る思い出のいくつかは、旅行ではなく、出会った人々でした。また、CJCPを通して、同じように日本に研修をしていた学生と大の仲良しになり、今でも交流が続いています。彼らと共に旅行したからこそ、心に残る思い出となりました。 来日した当初の観光客気分は、日本に住んで生活をはじめるとその土地の人としての感情に代わりました。天気がいい日曜の午後に、お気に入りのレストランでのんびり過ごしたり、友達と話したりするのが大好きでした。また、研修半ば頃に、地元の剣道クラブに参加し、1週間に2回、道場で稽古する地元のメンバーと交流を深めていきました。こういう交流や体験は、普通の観光では経験できないものとして、何よりも心に残っています。 カナダに戻ってきてから、日本とずっと結びついている自分に気が付きました。留学生との交流、ツアーガイドやCJCPのオリエンテーションの学生アシスタントとしての機会は、CJCPに参加して初めて、めぐり合ったものだと実感しています。 日本について人に聞かれたら、まさに「素晴らしい」の一言に尽きます。でも、それだけでは、自分の経験を話すには、足りないかもしれません。訪問した場所、出会った人を言葉で表現するのは難しいですが、実際に住んで、体験した全てだと思います。

stuDeNt testiMONiALs Abrielle Sirois-CournoyerDiscipline: Mechanical EngineeringInstitution: École Polytechnique de MontréalEmployer: Sumitomo Chemical June 2013- December 2013 The seven months of my Canada-Japan Co-op Program work-term was a extremely fulfilling experience. I worked at Sumitomo Chemical where I had a good practical job and where I learned how a real chemical plant operated. The job was very interesting, but the best part of my internship was the people I met during my time there. The people that I worked with were amazing. They always took great care of me. They wanted to help me with travelling plans or with any question that I had about Japan. They encouraged me to discover the country by travelling places with me. I really appreciated their help. I learned a lot about their culture. They told me about their celebrations like, for example, Obon - a Buddhist event commemorating the spirit of their ancestors. My internship in Niihama, on the small island of Shikoku, was a completely different experience compared to having an internship in the big city of Osaka or Tokyo. I discovered Japan in a natural and traditional way. There was no opportunity for boredom as there were so many activities organized by my coworkers. I participated in the company’s summer festival, and went to a softball competition. My coworkers brought me to a baseball game and to Sake house (Brewery). Some trips, like rafting and Matsuyama, were organized by the company. These were always good occasions to meet new people. I recommend a work term with the CJCP to every student. Do not hesitate! It is an experience you will never forget and will help you to reflect about life in Canada compared to how people live in other parts of the world. You have to come to Japan with an open mind. It is an experience that will change your life.

アブリエル　シノワ－コーノイエモントリオール理工科大学　機械工学専攻2013年6月～2013年12月　住友化学株式会社 日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP）を通しての7ヶ月の研修は、大変充実していました。研修先の住友化学で、実際に化学工場がどのように稼動しているかを学ぶことが出来ました。研修業務はとても興味深く、何よりも素晴らしかったことは、研修期間中にお会いした方々だと思います。 一緒に仕事をした方々は、大変親切で、常に、私のことを気にかけてくれました。週末の旅行計画や、日本についての疑問に手を差し伸べ、時には、私と一緒に旅行して、日本を知る機会を持たせてくれました。皆さんの手助けに心から感謝しています。日本文化、例えば、仏教の行事として、祖先の霊を祀るお盆など、皆さんから色々なことを教えていただきました。 四国にある新居浜での研修は、大阪や東京といった大都市での研修と大きく異り、自然豊かで、伝統的な日本を垣間見た気がします。同僚が計画したくれた予定がいつも目白押しで、退屈することなど全くありませんでした。野球の試合や醸造所に連れて行ってくれた同僚もいます。会社の夏祭りや、ソフトボール大会、会社主催の急流下りや松山への旅行にも参加しました。こういった行事は、新たな人達に会う絶好の機会となりました。 全ての学生にCJCPでの研修を勧めます。ためらわないで！決して忘れることのない、カナダと地球の裏側で、どのように人々が生活しているかを比べるのに一役買う良い経験です。まずは、先入観を持たずに心をオープンにして日本に行くのがいいでしょう。それは、あなたの人生を変える経験になると思います。

Madelyn AbrahamDiscipline: Biomedical ScienceInstitution: University of OttawaEmployer: Kao Corporation September 2014-December 2014 My experience with the Canada-Japan Co-op Program was tremendously fulfilling, both professionally and personally. I left for Japan with the intention of testing my limits and immersing myself in another culture, and I was not disappointed. Although Japanese culture is vastly different from Canadian culture, the international co-op experience was invaluable. My supervisors at Kao Corporation taught me the skills I needed to succeed and allowed me to work towards research goals at my own pace. Although my work term was short (only four months), the work I did was highly beneficial to my team’s objectives and might result in a new patent for the company! I could never have imagined that I could take away so much from only a few months. To students considering applying: never again will you be young enough and free enough to pick up your life and move half-way across the world. CJCP will expand your horizons and help you create memories that you will cherish throughout your lifetime.

マデリン　アブラハムオタワ大学　生物医科学専攻2014年9月～2014年12月　花王株式会社 日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP）を通しての経験は、研修、個人の生活の両面で、この上なく充実していました。日本へ行くということは、私の限界を試し、異文化に触れるという目的がありましたが、がっかりする事などありませんでした。日本の文化は、カナダの文化と大きく異なるので、海外での研修は、とても貴重な経験です。研修先の指導担当官は、業務を遂行するのに必要なスキルを教えて下さった上、目標に向けて、私のペースで仕事に臨ませて下さいました。私の研修期間は4ヶ月と短かったですが、私の研修内容は、チームが目指す目標に大いに役に立つもので、結果、新しい特許を得るかもしれません！たった4ヶ月の研修で、このようなことが期待できるとは、思いもよりませんでした。プログラムへの参加を考えている学生へ一言:好きなことが出来る若いうちに、地球の反対側で何が起こっているか実際に見てみるのがいいでしょう。CJCPは、視野を広げ、これからの人生の大切に取っておきたい思い出作りに一役買うことでしょう。

The moment I set foot in Japan, I immediately realized that I was about to encounter great adventures and opportunities. Living in Japan was full of surprises. The customs and traditions are like nowhere else in the world. I have come to appreciate and become fond of this country that is filled with uniquely enriched cultures. I learned their traditions, participated in their cultural events, and enjoyed the wonderful moments that my colleagues and fellow CJCP students shared. Working in Japan was an enlightening part of my life. I always dreamed of working in this country of renowned advancements in technology. This dream would not have come true if it wasn’t for CJCP’s existence. The Co-op Program opens many opportunities for motivated students like myself. The research lab that I joined was in a world-class facility for innovated developments in telecommunication. The technical training and hospitality I received from the work place were amongst the most valuable I ever received. I appreciate all efforts that CJCP put towards my job application, as well as the constant feedbacks provided during my work term.
