Our Novena preacher Fr. We hope you will find them filled with the animating spirit of our patron: a spirit of love, of hope, of compassion, patience, and fidelity to Jesus Christ. Who is St. Jude? We have been asked time and again over the years. The question confirms the ubiquity of our patron who, one writer says, receives veneration from more Catholics than any other figure except Mary, even as it admits his “hiddenness:” little is known about him. He is variously described as “friend and cousin of Our Savior,” “brother of James,” “writer of the Epistle of St. Jude (the next-to-last book of the New Testament),” and all this he was. But how did he come to be known as the saint of desperate cases? We have the witness of St. Bridget, the 14 th -century Swedish saint, who was told by Christ in one of her visions to pray to Jude because “in accordance with his surname, Thaddeus – the amiable, the loving – he will show himself most willing to give help.” We have the account of the 4 th -century Church historian Eusebius, who told of Jude’s healing of King Abgar of Edessa (in modern- day Turkey) who was stricken with leprosy. We know of Jude’s evangelizing work with Simon in Persia, where they were later martyred. In the Gospel of John (14:27) Jesus, replying to a question from Jude, said the words that would be fulfilled over and again by St. Jude’s miraculous intercession: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Devotees of St. Jude in desperate situations know the power of these words; they extol him as patron of the lost cause, the impossible situation, the peace that passes all understanding. Join us in paying him homage in our Novena October 20 – 28. Please submit your petitions so that we may offer them on our altar during the nine days. In Christ’s peace Fr. Allen Duston, O.P. Dear Friends of St. Jude,

The St. Jude Novena takes place October 20 – 28. Our Novena preacher Fr. Kieran Healy, O.P. will explore various issues that impact our lives of faith today under the banner “getting to the heart of things.” This inspired us to go to the heart of our ministry to St. Jude and reaffirm its key elements, which are set forth on the following pages.

Bridget, the 14th-century Swedish saint, who was told by Christ in one of her visions to pray to Jude because “in accordance with his surname, Thaddeus – the amiable, the loving –he will show himself most willing to give help.” We have the account of the 4th-century Church historian Eusebius, who told of Jude’s healing

of King Abgar of Edessa (in modern-day Turkey) who was stricken with leprosy.

The mission of the Shrine of St. Jude is to foster devotion to St. Jude Thaddeus, “Patron of Difficult Cases,” and support the education and formation of worthy candidates for the Dominican Priesthood and Brotherhood.

St. Jude Novena, October 2014

Fr. Kieran Healy, O.P. was born inBerkeley, CA. He attended St.Mary’s College in Moraga, CA, entered the Dominican Order in 1955, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1961 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco.

Fr. Healy has served the Order in a number of official capacities, including Promoter of Social Justice, Vicar Provincial, and Master of Students. He has also been pastor and prior at Blessed Sacrament, the Dominican parish in Seattle, WA; rector at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral in Reno, NV; and promoter of campus ministry at Portland State University in Oregon.

In the 1990s, Fr. Healy ministered in Kisumu, Kenya as superior and novice master, then later as student master in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital. His years in Kenya made Fr. Healy proficient in Swahili, the

native language. He is also an accomplished artist and avid runner.Last summer Fr. Healy returned to his hometown to take up duties as Pastor of St. Mary Magdalene church.

His Novena preaching, we can be sure, will be informed by a wealth of experience and insight, as he shares with us the fruits of his Dominican life of prayer and study. Fr. Healy will cover topics that seriously impact our lives of faith today, such as “getting to the heart of things,” and “the holiness of the ordinary.” We look forward tohaving him with us once more.

Glossary of some terms associated with the Shrine:

• Apostolate: describes the mission, authority or office of an Apostle. St. Jude Thaddeus was an Apostle of Jesus, in addition to being a cousin of Our Savior (as described in the Hymn to St. Jude, which is sung at the Shrine’s daily 5:30 p.m. Mass).

• Perpetual Enrollment: grants membership in the St. Jude Apostolate in perpetuity (see certificate at left). Members are remembered daily in the prayers of the Dominican friars and during the solemn Novenas at the Shrine. Families can be enrolled, as well as individuals living and deceased. To arrange for enrollment or to request a form call the Shrine office at (415) 931-5919. You may enroll online. Our web address is www.stjude-shrine.org (continued on page 3)

Do saints really have more fun? Solitude, isolation, internet. Skellig Michael – or drifting into glory. These are some of the other themes Fr. Kieran will explore in his preaching during the St. Jude Novena. All Novena Masses are preceded by recitation of the Rosary led by Fr. Felix Cassidy, O.P., and, on weekdays, blessing with the St. Jude relic.

Novena Preacher: Fr. Kieran Healy, O.P.

Following the St. Jude Novena this year, the Shrine will enter itseightieth year. We thought it a good time to give a brief overview of who we are, what we do, and the ways you collaborate with us in our ministry of hope.

History and Mission – In 1935, the friars of the Western Dominican Province founded the Shrine to bring hope to a world in the grip of the Great Depression. Located inSt. Dominic’s Church, the beautiful neo-Gothic church in lower Pacific Heights, San Francisco, the Shrine since its founding has drawn pilgrims and devotees from around the world. They come to seek the intercession of St. Jude, patron of difficult and desperate cases. The current director, Fr. Allen Duston, O.P., is in a long line of Dominican friars who, assisted by talented lay staff, have managed the activities of the Shrine. There are many St. Jude shrines throughout the world; our apostolate has no affiliation with them.

The mission of the Shrine is to further the devotion to St. Jude Thaddeus and to support the education and formation of worthy candidates for the Dominican priesthood and brotherhood.

Glossary (continued from page 2)

• Pilgrimage: a pilgrim’s journey, usually to a holy site, for the purpose of venerating it. The Shrine welcomes thousands of pilgrims, both individuals and groups, year round. We encourage groups, some of which make annual visits, to contact the Shrineoffice beforehand so that wecan make arrangements for your special requests (e.g., Mass, anointing, etc.). This year we welcomed groups from as far away as Indonesia, and from Utah and Sacramento, among other places.

• Novena: nine successive days of devotion marked by focused prayer seeking special intercessory graces. The Shrine offers seven Novenas each year, including Novenas in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Peregrine (the “cancer saint”), and St. Jude. We encourage devotees to submit prayer requests for inclusion in the NovenaMasses, which take place twice daily during the nine days.

• Blessed St. Jude Oil: a sacramental of the Church in accordance with the Church’s Book of Blessings. This oil is blessed with the relic of St. Jude. Its use invokes God’s protection from harm and His bringing us to health of mind and body. It is provided with instructions and a prayer.

• Votive lights: an outward sign of our inner intention as we pray for a person or another petition. In addition to the hundreds of candles lit eachweek at the Shrine by those invoking St. Jude’s help and comfort amid the trials of life, votive lights are lit for a specific duration (30 days, 9days, etc.). You can call us to request that a votive light be lit for your intention, or to obtain a request form. You can also make your request online at our web address. (See instructions for perpetual enrollment.)

• Mass: a reenactment on the altar of the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection offered for those who are deceased, those who are ill, and for special intentions or on special occasions. The Dominican friars offer Masses at the Shrine of St. Jude upon receipt of your request. The 5:30 daily weekday Mass at the Shrine is known as the St. Jude Mass where intentions of St. Jude Shrine devotees are prayed for. To request a Mass at theShrine, please see instructions for perpetual enrollment. The amount of the offering for a Mass is left to your generosity.

Does your employer have a Matching Gift Program?

Many companies match their employees’ charitable donations up to 100%. It’s a great way for Friends of St. Jude to double their donation to the Shrine. We encourage you to check with your employer to determine if they have such a program in place. Do let us know if we can be of assistance in this effort.

Each year we publish excerpts of letters from Friends of St. Jude attesting to the ways our patron has interceded for them. All of them speak to us of the qualities that form the foundation of our Apostolate: faith, hope, love, and profound gratitude. We thank the following for enriching our day:

Novena Prayer

St. Jude, glorious apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of difficult and desperate cases. Pray for me who am in need of God’s mercy. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help where help was almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly - (here make your request) -and that I may praise God with you and all the elect throughout all eternity. I promise you, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor. I will honor youas my special and powerful patron and encourage devotion to you. St. Jude, pray for us and for all who honor and invoke thy aid. Amen.
