The undefeated Toby Edmonds-trained filly Houtzen (I Am Invincible) remains the favourite for the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) despite

drawing barrier 16 yesterday for the $3,500,000 two-year-old race at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Houtzen is a $4.40 favourite ahead of fellow filly She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain), who is the $5 second favourite after drawing barrier 13 in the capacity field of 16 plus three emergencies.

Edmonds, who travelled Houtzen to Sydney on Sunday, watched jockey Jeff Lloyd gallop the filly at Rosehill yesterday and is confident the she has improved since her Magic Millions 2YO Classic performance in January.

She resumed with a dominant four length victory over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm on 4 March carrying 63 kilograms, and in the process stretched her unbeaten record to four.

“She travelled down all day Sunday and got here (to Sydney) mid-afternoon and has settled in fantastically,” Edmonds said.

“She had a gallop here (at Rosehill) this morning (Tuesday), had a bit of a look around and pulled up really well.”

Houtzen was able to show blistering speed from barrier 16 when winning the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and jumps from barrier 14 if the emergencies do not gain a start.

“It’s up to Jeff now. He suits these on-speed type of horses,” Edmonds said.

“I would like one day for her to get a good barrier and take a sit. I expect her to lead from that barrier. She’s a speed horse and such a good gate horse. She comes out fast and can cross them with the others a second behind.”

Edmonds elected to run Houtzen at Eagle Farm instead of the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on the same day when the outside rail at Randwick was a distinct advantage.

“We did dodge the heavy track, but (Eagle Farm) wasn’t decent. Eagle Farm is a very testing track right now, it hasn’t settled down at all, and it was a little bit tougher track than you’d think,” he said.

“She came through that run well, she handled the track well and has a big weight relief this week from her last start.

“I think she’s going better now than she was leading into the Magic Millions.”

Warwick Farm-based trainer Gary Portelli has Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner She Will Reign and last Saturday’s Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Single Bullet (Not A Single Doubt) in the race.

Single Bullet drew barrier three with Tye Angland retaining the ride, while regular jockey Ben Melham maintains his association with She Will Reign.

Portelli said after the barrier draw that She Will Reign had benefited from her run in the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) when finishing second to Frolic (Husson) on a heavy track.

Wednesday 15 March 2017 Houtzen Draws Barrier 16 In Golden Slipper

“I worked her this morning on the Warwick Farm course proper over 1000 metres and I didn’t ask much of her, but she worked with a mate,” Portelli said.

“I said to (track rider) Glenn Lee, who rides her in all her work, to give her a little squeeze (over the last 50 metres) just to make sure there is something there and when he did she went ... straight past (her galloping companion).”

Portelli said She Will Reign’s two lead up runs this preparation would hold her in good stead with Rosehill likely to be heavy with rain forecast for the rest of the week.

“She’s in great order and now that we’ve seen the weather I’m glad we raced her two weeks ago because she’s got that fitness to fall back on now and she’s had a feel of (the heavy track) and had a go at 1200 (metres),” he said.

Stablemate Single Bullet was forced to race up on the speed last Saturday at Rosehill after the late scratchings of Condor Heroes (Not A Single Doubt), who was likely to lead, and his Gerald Ryan-trained stablemate Albumin (Foxwedge).

“Barrier three (for Single Bullet), you couldn’t ask for anything better. Bullet is going to go back and settle off the pace and by the Slipper we’ll have an idea how the track is playing,” he said.

“We were going to ride him off the pace because we thought Condor Heroes would go forward and take on Hawksey’s horse (Ducimus) and come down the middle of the track like a few of them had done.

“But that obviously that wasn’t going to work when those scratchings came out.”

Godolphin’s UK jockey William Buick yesterday decided to stick with Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) runner up Trekking (Street Cry) in the Golden Slipper Stakes.

Buick elected to ride Trekking, who drew barrier 18, over the John O’Shea-trained stablemate Veranillo (Medaglia d’Oro), who will be ridden by Brenton Avdulla from barrier 11.

Buick galloped Trekking and Veranillo, who will wear blinkers in the Golden Slipper Stakes, at Osborne Park near Hawkesbury yesterday.

“(Trekking is) a nice colt, but of course it’s a tough race. He’s a horse with untapped potential so I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet,” Buick said.

“If he gets a bit of luck from the barrier, he’ll have a good chance. The track’s going to be on the soft side, so it could be a race that could see an upset.

“I rode them (Trekking and Veranillo) both in work this morning, it was very hard to pick between them. I just thought that if Trekking had a bit more luck in Canberra last time he could have won.

“He looks like a colt who is gearing himself up for a big one.”O’Shea’s assistant trainer Darren Beadman said Lonhro Plate (Listed,

1100m) winner Veranillo will be suited by barrier 11 and was fit after three runs this preparation, the most recent when third in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on 4 March.

“Veranillo is an exceptionally good colt, probably the most seasoned of our two runners,” Beadman said.

“He’s a horse who’s showed good fight in all his finishes and acquitted himself very well in the Silver Slipper. Blinkers go on for the first time and they seemed to have the right effect on him this morning at Osborne Park.”

Beadman said Avdulla would be able to settle Veranillo off a likely strong tempo and work into the race at the right time.

“He’s drawn a nice gate for his style of racing,” he said.“There’s a lot of speed inside and there’s a lot of speed outside. I think

he’s going to be in a nice cruising position about five lengths off the speed and hopefully he can get to the right part of the track.”

The Lindsay Park training partnership will have four runners including

Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Catchy (Fastnet Rock), who will ridden by Craig Williams from barrier eight.

The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Catchy is joined by stablemates Formality (Fastnet Rock) (barrier two), Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Tulip (Pierro) (barrier ten) and Madeenaty (Exceed And Excel) (barrier nine) in the race.

Ryan Moore will ride Formality and Kerrin McEvoy will ride Tulip, with both fillies owned by Coolmore, while Madeenaty will be ridden by Regan Bayliss.

Randwick trainers Peter and Paul Snowden yesterday accepted with Blue Diamond Stakes runner up Pariah (Redoute’s Choice) (barrier four) and Invader (Snitzel) (barrier 15).

Jockey Blake Shinn galloped Pariah at Randwick yesterday, convincing the rider and the Snowdens to run the colt in Saturday’s race.

Gerald Ryan has three Golden Slipper Stakes runners, Black Opal Stakes winner Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) (barrier five), Menari (Snitzel) (barrier one) and first emergency Chauffeur (Snitzel) (barrier 19).

Michael Freedman’s two fillies, the Reisling Stakes winner Frolic (Tommy Berry) and Teaspoon (Snitzel) (Zac Purton) drew barriers 17 and 14 respectively.

Teaspoon will wear winkers on Saturday for the first time after galloping in the gear yesterday at Randwick.

French Fern Added To Chairman’s SaleReisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner French Fern (Lope De Vega) has been added to Session Two of the Inglis Chairman’s Sale catalogue next month. The David Payne-trained three-year-old was announced yesterday as a wildcard entry for the elite breeding prospects sale, which is set to be held at Inglis’ Newmarket complex on 7 April. French Fern, who won last year’s Reisling Stakes at Randwick, has been unplaced in three starts this campaign and was listed for sale after finishing tenth in Saturday’s Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill. Payne said: “She’s from a very strong family and I expect she will make a great broodmare.” Click here to view the Chairman’s Sale Breeding Prospects catalogue.

Chautauqua To Run In George RyderHawkes Racing confirmed yesterday that multiple Group One winner Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) will take on Winx (Street Cry) in Saturday’s George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill. Chautauqua finished a narrow second in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) on 4 March at Randwick to George Ryder Stakes rival Le Romain (Hard Spun) and

is having his first start beyond 1400 metres in 26 career starts. "We don't think the 1500 metres is an issue," co-trainer Michael Hawkes told Racing.com. "He's had three starts at the 1400 and it's just a nice race for his next stepping stone."

Winx Works SoloChris Waller is remaining circumspect ahead of champion mare Winx’s George Ryder Stakes challenge on Saturday. The five-year-old mare, who is chasing a 16th consecutive victory on Saturday, galloped over 1000 metres at Rosehill yesterday with Hugh Bowman in the saddle. "It's a great field," Waller told Racing.com. "It's going to be a good challenge. Obviously Chautauqua and Tosen Stardom are there as is Black Heart Bart, Le Romain and a few others there as well. It's great for racing and she'll have to be at her best."

Fell Swoop Back On TrackCanberra trainer Matt Dale will accept with Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday who has recovered after galloping on himself in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m). The five-year-old gelding, who finished fourth in The Galaxy last year, resumed with a sixth placing in the Oakleigh Plate but was found to hurt himself during the race. Dale took Fell Swoop back to

Supido Returns To SydneyVictorian-trained five-year-old Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) placegetter Supido (Sebring) will return to Sydney on Saturday for The Galaxy at Rosehill. The Mick Kent-trained Supido was beaten one and a half lengths when third behind English (Encosta De Lago) at Randwick on a Heavy 10 track on 4 March. Placed in last year’s The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m), Supido will be ridden by Craig Williams on Saturday, who replaces Luke Nolen.

Russian Revolution Likely To Gain StartTalented three-year-old Russian Revolution (Snitzel) is likely to gain a start in The Galaxy when the field is released today for the Group One race. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt, who won the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last preparation, is 16th in the ballot order for The Galaxy, a race which is capped at 14 runners. A winner of two barrier trials this campaign, Russian Revolution is likely to make the field with the Joe Pride-trained Kuro (Denman) and the Kris Lees-trained Zestful (Redoute’s Choice) looking likely to bypass the race.

Prized Icon Late Nominated For RanvetTrainer James Cummings has added Group One winner Prized Icon (More Than Ready) to the Ranvet Stakes (registered as Rawson Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The three-year-old, who finished second in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) last start, is also entered for the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) on Saturday. Prized Icon is one of four three-year-olds entered for the Ranvet Stakes. Meanwhile, the Lindsay Park-trained four-year-old He’s Our Rokki (Roc De Cambes), who finished fourth in the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) last Saturday at Rosehill, is likely to back up in the Ranvet Stakes with Dwayne Dunn taking the ride.

Rising Red Could Run In RanvetCranbourne co-trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have also nominated three-year-old Rising Red (Redwood) for the Ranvet Stakes. The gelding, who also carries an entry for the Rosehill Guineas, won at the Sandown Lakeside track on 22 February before finishing second in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) on 4 March. If Rising Red does take on older horses in the Ranvet Stakes, Corey Brown will take the ride. A track gallop at Randwick today will determine whether Rising Red accepts for Saturday’s $700,000 contest.

Sofia Rosa Expected To Bypass BonecrusherATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sofia Rosa (Makfi), who is entered for tomorrow’s Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie, is expected to run in Sydney on Saturday. The Stephen Marsh-trained four-year-old is also entered for the Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday. “It’s planned to go early on Wednesday morning,” said bloodstock agent Bruce Perry, who manages owner Lib Petagna’s thoroughbred interests. “The Ranvet has always been a thought and then when Ellerslie was called off we put in an entry. The race fits into her programme and when we saw the nominations it did look a very inviting option.”

Bosson To Ride Gingernuts In GuineasNew Zealand-based jockey Opie Bosson has been booked to ride New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Gingernuts (Iffraaj) in Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas. Bosson, who will return from suspension he picked up in New Zealand on Saturday, rode the three-year-old gelding for the first time when winning the Ellerslie feature on 4 March. Gingernuts, who arrived in Sydney on Sunday, will have a gallop at Randwick today and will be entered for ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 8 April if he runs well on Saturday.

Land Of Plenty To Run At RosehillThe Grahame Begg-trained three-year-old Land Of Plenty (Stratum) is expected to run in the Rosehill Guineas instead of the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday. Land Of Plenty ran third in the C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) two starts ago at Flemington before finishing eighth in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on 4 March. A 30 per cent share of Land Of Plenty will be offered at session one of Inglis’ The Chairman’s Sale for Elite Racing Prospects on 30 March.

Heiroglyphics Set For Birthday CardThe Anthony and Edward Cummings-trained Hieroglyphics (Conatus) is expected to run in the Birthday Card Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The Gerry Harvey-owned five-year-old mare is also entered for The Galaxy at the same meeting, but the stable are leaning towards running her against her own sex in the Birthday Card Stakes. Brenton Avdulla will ride Hieroglyphics, who won her first two starts this preparation before finishing second last start in the Wenona Girl Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick on 4 March. Click here to view the Rosehill weights.

Newcastle Next For ClapperRandwick trainer Pat Webster says Happy Clapper (Teofilo) will bypass Saturday’s George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) and instead run in Friday’s Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m). The six-year-old gelding will take the easier option and run in the $150,000 Newcastle feature, which received 17 entries. Kris Lees has Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense) nominated, while Chris Waller has entered Vanbrugh (Encosta De Lago) and Marenostro (Duelled), who has had two barrier trials this preparation ahead of his first up run. Weir Chases CenturyDarren Weir is poised to bring up a century of Melbourne winners for the season as the trainer charges towards a record metropolitan tally in Victoria. A winning double at Moonee Valley on Monday took Weir to 99 metropolitan winners so far and he could bring up the century at Sandown Lakeside today. Weir reached a century of Melbourne winners for the first time last season when he finished on 106, notching his 100th win on 9 July. Only three other trainers have reached 100 Victorian metropolitan winners in a season with Lee Freedman holding the record of 115 set in 2005/06. David Hayes and Peter Moody are the other two. Click here to view the Sandown Lakeside acceptances.

Lane To Reunite With Sacred ElixirVictorian jockey Damian Lane has been booked to ride Group One winner Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi) in the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 1 April. The Tony Pike-trained three-year-old gelding, who finished fifth behind Gingernuts in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie on 4 March, will return to Australia for the Australian Derby after three unplaced runs in New Zealand. Lane rode Sacred Elixir to victory in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) and the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) in the spring before Zac Purton took over when the gelding ran second in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). Purton rode Sacred Elixir when successful in the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) during the Queensland Winter Carnival last June.

Last Week Scores On DebutThe northern hemisphere-bred colt Last Week (Tamayuz) made an impressive winning debut at over 1400 metres at Bendigo yesterday. The Darren Weir-trained three-year-old beat Alexandra Demure (More Than Ready) by just over a length with another quarter of a length back to Pray For Us (All American) in third. The colt, who is out an unraced half-sister to Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Motivator (Montjeu), Group Two winner MacArthur (Montjeu) and Listed winner Imperial Star (Fantastic Light), was purchased for 26,000gns by John Foote Bloodstock at Book Two of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for owner Gerry Ryan. Foote and Ryan have enjoyed success with

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale graduates, most notably with Lord Reims Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) winner Signoff (Authorized), who they bought for 75,000gns at the 2011 sale.

Goodie Admits To Flemington BiasFlemington track manager Mick Goodie has admitted the racecourse last Saturday was biased and favoured those able to race on the inside section of the track. There has been varying opinions for the past fortnight over how Flemington has played at the past two Group One race meetings. Flemington will race for the third consecutive week this Saturday. "There is no doubt there was an advantage to the inside. Blind Freddy would probably say something was there,” Goodie told Racing.com. "The best way to explain it is it's like a thick woollen jumper compared to a cotton jumper. Kikuyu is the wool and the Rye is the cotton. It has that effect of slowing the horses down. There are jockeys who would comment when that Kikuyu is in full bloom, that it will slow them down.”

Early Morning Track Inspection For GosfordThe Gosford race meeting scheduled for today could be in jeopardy with the track rated a Heavy 9 late yesterday. If further rain was to fall, Racing NSW stewards planned to inspect the course early today to determine whether the meeting goes ahead.

Jockeys Facing Charges Over Moonee Valley RidesVictorian jockeys Dean Holland and Katelyn Mallyon will front the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board a date to be set over the handling of their respective mounts in a 3000 metre race at Moonee Valley on 3 February. Racing Victoria stewards have charged the pair after deeming Mallyon, who rode Valediction (Zabeel), and Holland on Barge And Charge (Stratum), did not give their horses the opportunity to win or obtain the best place possible. After racing on the speed, Barge And Charge tired to finish tenth and Valediction weakened to run 11th.

Callow Lodges AppealJockey Noel Callow has appealed against the severity of a careless riding suspension imposed

by Racing Victoria stewards for his ride on Ragazzo Del Corsa (Stratum) at Pakenham last Thursday. Callow was suspended from Monday until 24 March, a total of 15 race meetings, for careless riding on the Danny O’Brien-trained four-year-old. Callow’s appeal will be heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board tomorrow at 11.30am.

Duffy Out For Ten WeeksJockey Jake Duffy is expected to be out of action for ten weeks after breaking his elbow in a race fall at Corowa on Sunday. The Victorian jockey, who has enjoyed success with Lindsay Park in recent times, was unable to avoid trouble after a rival horse broke down in front of him when riding Speedshow (Jet Spur) in a 1600 metre race. Duffy will have an operation this week to have screws and a plate inserted in a fractured left elbow. "A broken bone is usually six to eight weeks but because it’s an elbow and all the movement you need from it, means it could be eight to ten weeks," Duffy told Racing.com.

Let Her Rip Uncertain To RunTrainer Shaun Ritchie has yet to make a decision as to which race he will run Let Her Rip (Rip Van Winkle) in, but Ritchie said yesterday he is currently favouring a run in Saturday’s Cuddle Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham rather than tomorrow’s rescheduled Westbury Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) at Ellerslie. “Her form is a bit better at left-handed tracks, and with a good weather forecast the track might be marginally better down there, but not that that’s really an issue for her, she seems to handle all types of ground,” Ritchie told www.theinfromant.co.nz. “There are some pretty good mares in that Westbury line-up, which I guess you would expect for a Group Two as opposed to a Group Three. We’ll make the final decision later on, but that’s the way I’m leaning at the moment anyway.”

Mosley To Ride ZigwigJockey Terry Moseley has been booked to ride the Nick Wigley-trained Zigwig (Zacinto) in Saturday’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Trentham. The Christchurch-based jockey has won two races on the filly, including the

Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m) last season, and he will be reunited with three-year-old filly following her last-start success at Ashburton under Alysha Collett. Zigwig has won three of her 11 starts.

Lowy Pleased With Savvy DreamsTrainer Guy Lowry is pleased with the condition of Savvy Dreams (Savabeel) ahead of the filly’s tilt in Saturday’s New Zealand Oaks at Trentham. The three-year-old filly, who was last seen running a close second in the Lowland Stakes (Gr 3, 2100m) at Hawke's Bay on 2 March, will be looking to secure her first stakes victory when she lines up in the NZ$300,000 race. “I’d say the 2400 metres will be okay for her,” Lowry told www.theinfromant.co.nz.” She actually worked her way back in front of the other filly past the line in the Lowland. She didn’t want to get beaten. If we get the drop on her this Saturday, rather than the other way around, you never know what might happen.”

Saracino Likely To Head To AustraliaIf Saracino (Per Incanto) can give a good account of himself in Saturday’s Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) at Trentham he will then likely be sent to Australia for a tilt at the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (registered as Royal Sovereign Stakes) (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on 8 April. The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained three-year-old colt, who has already tasted success in Australia when he took out the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington last preparation, was last seen running eighth in the Darley Plate (Gr 3, 1200m) Ellerslie on 4 March. “He’ll run at Trentham over 1400 metres against his own

age group and all going well he’ll then go to Sydney for the Arrowfield 1200,” said owner Lib Petagna’s racing manager Bruce Perry.

Matamata Plan For JoyfillyTalented filly Joyfilly (Highly Recommended) will tune up for her possible tilt in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Awapuni on 1 April when she runs in a maiden at Matamata over 1200 metres today. The Chris Wood-trained filly, who has finished second in two of her previous starts, will need to run well to gain a starting berth into the Group One. “It will be a heavy track so we’ll find out if she handles it and I want to get her to the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Awapuni so she needs a run,” Wood said. “She hasn’t done anything wrong and she’s up to the best, certainly among the fillies, that’s been going around. “She’s been a bit of a work in progress, she showed her natural ability early on and it’s just taken a while to click on mentally.”

Euphoria Back In WorkTalented filly Euphoria (Rip Van Winkle) is back in work and trainer Rachael Frost is eyeing a trip to Australia with a possible tilt at the Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m) on 6 May on the filly’s agenda. The filly has won two of her three career starts to date and Frost has high hopes for the three-year-old. “All going well we would like to take her to Queensland for a race like the Gold Coast Guineas and then hopefully a programme toward the Tatts Tiara,” Frost said. “She’s had a quiet gallop and she’ll have a jump-out or a trial in the coming weeks. She’s a big girl now and she’s doing very well. We might look at the three-year-old race at Te Rapa for her at the end of April.”

Callan Expects Limitless To Run WellIrish jockey Neil Callan expects Limitless (Lope De Vega) to run a big race in Sunday’s Hong Kong Derby (HK Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin. The Peter Ho-trained four-year-old gelding, who was raced as Defrocked in Britain, won the Britannia Stakes (8f) at Royal Ascot last run when trained by Jamie Osborne and has won once since being imported to Hong Kong last year. “Limitless has a big engine,” Callan said. “You can feel it when you ride him in the morning. And with an engine like that, you have to go in there confident; it’s the Derby, you have to be confident you can beat them and hope everything goes right.”

International

Sunday Break GoneGrade Two winner Sunday Break (Forty Niner) died at stud in France on Sunday after suffering from a suspected aneurysm or heart attack. Sunday Break started his stallion career at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky, where he stood for three seasons before moving to Walmac International and he was then relocated to France to stand at Haras de Grandcamp before stints at Haras de le Haie Neuve, Haras du Lion and finally Barbottiere. He sired 13 stakes winners, which including sole Group One winner Never On Sunday, who won the Prix d'Ispahan (Gr 1, 1850m) at Longchamp in 2009. The stallion was standing his first season standing at Haras de la Barbottiere.

A colt by Vinery Stud’s first season sire All Too Hard (Casino Prince) topped the second day of Book One of the Magic Millions Adelaide

Yearling Sale after trainer Leon Macdonald went to $190,000 and had to fight off fierce competition from fellow trainer Gary Moore to secure the colt from the Baramul Stud draft.

The October born colt, catalogued as Lot 145, is the second foal out of the winning Testa Rossa (Perugino) mare Lady Paget, who is a half-sister to Group One-winning and now stallion Casino Prince (Flying Spur) making the colt inbred 2x3 to Lady Capel (Last Tycoon), who is the dam of the Vinery-based sire.

Lady Capel is also the dam of the Group Three winner Tagus (Encosta De Lago) and Listed winners Lord Of The Land (Timber County) and Metallurgical (Redoute’s Choice).

Leon Macdonald, who was also responsible for purchasing the joint most expensive lot on Monday, after paying $170,000 for a colt by Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) and the trainer told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday he had picked

the pair out during the inspections and was very keen to leave the sale with both of them.

“He’s a lovely horse, lovely colt, very well related and I just really liked him,” said Macdonald. “I had a look at him because he stood out in the catalogue. I looked at him about three or four times over the inspection days, and I thought ‘he’s the one I’ll buy.’

“He probably needs a little bit of time, but he’s a very nice horse.

"I've never had one (by All Too Hard) but I know Johnny Hawkes has great faith in him and he doesn't do a bad job with a horse," Macdonald added.

Mcdonald said the two yearlings, which included the Stratum colt he bought yesterday, were in his view, the two best colts at the sale, but he did not expect to pay that much for them.

“He’s (Stratum colt) also a lovely horse. He’s a lovely athletic colt,” said Macdonald. “I felt personally that they were the best two horses on the complex. There were two of us on both of them, myself and Gary Moore so I’m pleased to come away with them.

All Too Hard Makes Colt $190,000

“Personally I thought they were $150,000 colts, but they went a bit further than that, but I was prepared to go that little bit further because they were both very nice horses.

It was not long before leading Sydney trainer Gary Moore made his presence felt, after being outbid on the All Too Hard colt, when he paid $155,000 for a colt by the dual Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) winner So You Think (High Chaparral).

The Bowness Stud (as Agent) consigned colt, who was catalogued as Lot 286, is sixth foal out winning mare Starspangled (Danehill), herself out of the Epsom and Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) winning mare User Friendly (Slip Anchor) and is also a half-sister to Irish Group Three winner Downton (Danehill). Of the four of Starspangled’s foals to race, three of them have been winners.

Further back the colt is from the same family as American Grade Three winner Gender Agenda (Holy Roman Emperor).

Moore was very taken with the colt during inspections and also explained he is an admirer of the stallion So You Think, who is currently sitting in second position on the second seasons sires list in Australia by earnings.

"He's coming off a great stud farm," Moore said. "So You Think is doing the job at stud - I really love So You Think.

"His second dam is User Friendly who was racing at the same time as when I was riding in France.

"It's a beautifully balanced pedigree - he might be my first Derby winner," Moore added.

John North of Bowness Stud, who sold eight yearlings in the first two days of the sale for a total aggregate of $293,000 at an average of $36,625, said he thought the colt had similar qualities to his Coolmore-based sire So You Think who has enjoyed a great run on the track in recent weeks with Inference and La Bella Diosa.

"We were delighted. We've had him for a client. They bred him and he's a lovely animal who is very similar to the stallion himself So You Think. He's a magnificent type," North told ANZ Bloodstock News.

"He was born on our place and then he went back to the client's farm, which is also at Young, where they reared him and then he came back to us to prep for the sale.

"He's a very nice colt. Gary has got some good people in him. Everyone is happy. The client is happy, the buyers are happy and the

trainer is happy, so it's all good and good for our business.”

However North was slightly disappointed with their results in Adelaide this year, commenting: "It's been a bit softer than last year overall, but last year we had quite a few first season sires and this year we have got quite a few second season sires and the market is a bit soft on them. It's a fair sale."

Earlier in the day, John Foote bought three yearlings for a total spend of $290,000 and the most expensive of these was a homebred colt by the late Cornerstone Stud-based sire Hussonet (Mr. Prospector), who he bought for $140,000.

Catalogued as Lot 194, the colt is the fourth foal out of the Listed-placed mare Miss Piggy Bank (Secret Savings), who has had one winner from one foal to race.

Meanwhile, the colt’s third dam, Excellent Prospect (Mr. Prospector), produced 2001 Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Faiza (Danehill).

Excellent Prospect is out of the Listed winner Par Excellence (L’Enjoleur), making her a half-sister to Listed winner Khozaam (Seattle Slew) and the Group One-placed mare Canadian Mill (Mill Reef), the dam of Group Two winner Hawajiss (Kris), who herself produced dual Group One winner Nashville (Darci Brahma).

Cornerstone Stud, who are sitting at the top of the vendors table (with three or more sold) by aggregate after the first two days, selling 32 lots for a total aggregate of $1,506,000 at an average of $47,063 and the operations Bloodstock manager Tom Murtagh told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that he was very

pleased with the results, but said he was not expecting the Hussonet colt to make that much.

“We had nine Hussonet colts and they have all been very well received, but no I can’t say we ever thought he would make that much,” said Murtagh. “We thought he might make 100,000 but no that was definitely above and beyond what we expected.

“He was very our star horse and he paraded well, there was a lot of interest in him.

“John has great success with Hussonet in Hong Kong, so I’m pleased to see he bought this one.”

Murtagh also commented on the strong sale for the stud’s females, after a filly by

Nicconi (Bianconi) was purchased for $100,000 by McEvoy Mitchell Racing on day one.

“The real encouraging thing for us was the filly market over the last few days the filly’s sold very strongly and they were very well received and it was very encouraging to see that people are trying to buy into the family’s and the pedigrees, I was very, very happy to see that.

“I was certainly not expecting that price for her (Nicconi filly), but she had a walk to die for, and a good walk, I always think, sells horses,” he explained.

“Nicconi himself has gone to another level it was nice to see, and the encouraging thing for Cornerstone and our clients is that not

everyone is looking for that colt, if you’ve got a nice filly and she’s by a sire that is going the right way it’s fantastic we can go to the Adelaide Sales and get that sort of price for her.”

It was a first trip to the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale for Murtagh and he was full of praise of the standard of this year’s renewal.

“Personally, I could not be more impressed with Magic Millions. We had a parade for the local trainers before we went to the sale that was put on by Magic Millions and that was fantastic.

“Everything about Magic Millions is so impressive, they are so professional in what they do and we are really appreciative of all they have done for Cornerstone Stud. The facility itself is very impressive also, it’s a very good mix and it can only get better,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Arrowfield Stud’s Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) only had one yearling, a colt, catalogued at this year’s sale and he realised $130,000 after being purchased by the New Zealand-based Lyndhurst Farm from the Arrowfield Stud draft.

Catalogued as Lot 217, the colt is the third foal out of the unraced mare Passiflora (Empire Maker), whose two foals to race have both been winners.

Passiflora is out of a sister to the Group One

winner and influential sire Danehill (Danzig), Grade Three winner and sire Eagle Eye (Danzig), Grade Three winners Shibboleth (Danzig) and Harpia (Danzig) and is a half-sister to French Listed winner Euphonic (The Minstrel), the dam of Listed winner Newsletter (Sir Percy).

Further back the colt is from the same family as the Hong Kong Group Three winner Dondonnell (First Defence).

"The standout thing from this sale has been the participation of the trading market - the pin hookers for the two-year-old sales and also into the Asian market," he added.

type; his remarkable record included training a world record ten city winners in a day (January 23, 1982), five Group One winners in a day (February 7, 1987), and six Group and listed winners in a day (September 12, 1987).

Hayes trained 524 stakes winners including 98 at Group One level.

Interestingly, that tally includes just one Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) - with Rory’s Jester (Crown Jester) in 1985. The same number as son David whose lone success came with Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) in 2006.

However, that may all change come Saturday with David Hayes four-pronged Slipper force headed by Catchy (Fasten Rock) and Tulip (Pierro) looking potent.

It’s another matter of minor Golden Slipper curiosity that neither Chris Waller nor Darren Weir has a runner. Of course, neither particularly focuses on juvenile racing. May the Lord help their rivals if they ever do.

As it stands, in city racing, David Hayes is the only trainer within cooee of Weir in Melbourne and only John O’Shea’s Godolphin army is remotely close to Waller in Sydney. Waller and Weir has each trained 99 metropolitan winners this season with three and a half months to go.

It’s especially scary in Melbourne where Weir’s 99 city wins and Hayes’ 77 combined is a tally one shy of the next 14 combined.

That’s a sort of dominance not even Hayes senior often enjoyed. I wonder when we might have our first draft or salary cap? The industry buys all the passed in yearlings (at the reserve of course) and allocates them to trainers at the bottom of the ladder. Hmm, could that bring a whole new meaning to ‘tanking’.

@anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com| 15 |

That was my thought, at Moonee Valley, on Monday when young Ben Hayes embraced the spirit and mantra of his grandfather Colin in

detailing Lindsay Park’s two-year-old statistics for the season. “That’s our 17th individual two-year-old winner for the season and 27th win,” young Hayes told Racing.com.

Colin Sidney Hayes (1924-1999) was the master of statistics. Not only in creating incredible training and breeding records but quantifying and reciting them at will.

Tommy Smith, of course, understood the value of publicity and happily courted racing journalists. Bart (Cummings) was just Bart, extraordinarily known by his christian name alone, and confident his one liners would generate enough newspaper inches.

However, neither was quite as good as Hayes. I suspect that he had a better understanding of the fact that we (racing writers, that is) are fundamentally lazy and working to a deadline. Thus, if he wanted to trot out the statistics of how well the stable - or one of his stallions - was going we’d happily jot them down and weave them into the copy.

It was genius and a lesson few of his contemporaries, or those who followed, learned. But not his grandson it seems.

CS really was quite something. He didn’t train as many major race winners as his fellow legends Bart and Tommy but for his overall contribution to Australian racing and breeding, you could argue there’s been nobody more significant. He brought the world to Australian racing.

And his achievements were phenomenal. Hayes junior’s comments prompted me to look at the records again.

How about this? His best season was his last in 1989-1990 when he trained 278 winners, then a Commonwealth record, including 13 Group One

winners and prize money just short of $10,000,000. To win races at that aggregate of prize

money, almost 30 years ago, was simply extraordinary. If we apply the price of the daily newspaper, or the Melbourne Cup purse, as the inflation index, then that would equate to around $30,000,000 now….using median house prices, as the barometer, it would be closer to $50,000,000.

By way of comparison, that would probably exceed Chris Waller’s $30,400,000 prize earnings last season and certainly top Darren Weir’s prize money total of $21,800,000.

Weir, incidentally, won last season’s Melbourne metropolitan premiership with 106 city winners. Hayes had 87 back in 1989-1990 when there were considerably fewer metropolitan meetings.

And you simply had to love the way he exited centre stage. Fresh from winning the 1989 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) with Almaarad (Ela Mana Mou), he virtually handed the 1990 edition and a Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on a plate - with Better Loosen Up (Loosen Up) - to son David.

And speaking of stats, how about his world record of 30 individual winners with the first crop of the imported stallion Without Fear (Baldric) in 1975-76?

I wonder from how many live foals and which stallion has achieved something similar since? Email me…[email protected]. Remember the syllogism. Racing writers are lazy. Steve is a racing writer. Steve is lazy.

But nobody ever emails me. I’m seeking counselling. No, wait…Glenn Burrows, from Willow Park Stud, did to discuss our pattern system and I am going to get to that in the next few weeks as it is a bit of a dog’s breakfast.

Anyway, speaking of Hayes’ stats and black

Tulip (Pierro) gave her first crop sire his first stakes winner and in the process franked her Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) prospects by

taking last Saturday’s Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill.

Big and strong and a filly of quality, Tulip was coming off a good last start fourth to stablemate Catchy (Fastnet Rock) in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) which looks to be the form race of the juvenile season up to this point.

Her performance to win last Saturday had great merit as she was three wide throughout yet was still able to finish strongly to overhaul runner up Alizee (Sepoy) to score by a length and three quarters with third placed Memento (Your Song) another two and a half lengths back in third place. Tulip’s winning time of 1:12.01

and final 600 metre time of 35.69 on the soft track were both faster than the figures recorded by the colt Single Bullet (Not A Single Doubt) in the earlier Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

The last Magic Night winner to annex the Golden Slipper a week later was the brilliant Bint Marscay (Marscay) in 1993, 24 years ago, but Tulip has a good chance to achieve this rare double on Saturday.

Last Saturday Tulip showed the same brand of strength and determination as her father Pierro (Lonhro), winner of the 2012 Golden Slipper in a season in which he was unbeaten in six starts to be acclaimed as the champion juvenile of his generation after completing the Sydney Triple Crown for two-year-olds by also taking the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Pierro trained on at three to contest another eight races, winning five and placing in the other three. He defeated top older horses to take the ATC George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m), beat Rebel Dane (California Dane) and Proisir (Choisir) in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and was too good for Group One winners Your Song (Fastnet Rock) and Epaulette (Commands) in the Run To The Rose (Gr 3, 1200m).

His only losses were honourable when second to Sacred Falls (O’Reilly) in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), conceding the winner 4 kilograms, second to All Too Hard (Casino Prince) in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) after being given a lot to do, and third to Ocean Park (Thorn Park) and All Too Hard in the 2012 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

Pierro defied his excellent middle distance pedigree in becoming such an outstanding sprinting two-year-old, capturing the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) at his very first start. Rather, he was bred to be best suited later over middle distances so it will be interesting to follow his stud career as it may be expected he will prove a versatile sire in terms of the optimum distances enjoyed by his progeny.

Pierro’s sire Lonhro (Octagonal) was a true champion, able to win from 1100 metres at two years through to 2000 metres but Pierro’s racing style and determination reminded me even more of his paternal grandsire Octagonal (Zabeel), another champion who rarely won by big margins.

Bred in NSW by Orpendale, Tulip was offered in Curraghmore’s draft at last year’s New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale, fetching NZ$400,000 to the joint bid of BBA Ireland and Lindsay Park Racing. She now carries the world famous navy colours of Coolmore and races for a partnership.

A half-sister to Caulfield Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Sacred Eye (High Chaparral), Tulip is out of the talented sprinting mare Musidora (Rock of Gibraltar) whose best win came in the Vanity Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in 2008.

Musidora’s superbly related American-bred second dam Grand Luxe (Sir Ivor) has exerted considerable influence on Australian breeding over the past two decades as from her descend two champion sires, Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) and Flying Spur (Danehill).

Grand Luxe, a stakes winner and the winner of ten races in the United States, is a half-sister to L’Enjoleur (Buckpasser), La Voyageuse (Tentam), Medaille d’Or (Secretariat) and D’Accord (Secretariat) from champion Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer).

Tulip is a total outcross to four generations but has four crosses of Northern Dancer (Nearctic) in her fifth generation plus another in her sixth generation.

A brother to Tulip is listed as Lot 251 at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale on 5 April and breeders wanting to tap into this very good family will have an opportunity at the Chairman’s Sale in Sydney on April 7 when Tulip’s unraced half-sister She’s A Vamp (High Chaparral), in foal to Lonhro, sells as Lot 80.
