YEARLINGS WELL RECEIVED

The yearlings we purchased at the Magic Millions Sale just over a week ago have been very well

received by the market and I thank our clients who have purchased into them.

By the end of next week I should know where each horse is at. I do have just the one share remaining

in the I Am Invincible filly out of Ambers Arion which I purchased out of the paddock late last year.

At $7,600 per share she looks great value now with the progeny of I Am Invincible averaging

$200,000 at the Gold Coast. Kris Lees gets that filly to train.

The yearlings I purchased for Tony McEvoy, Tony Gollan and John Moloney are highlighted in this

dispatch.

ON THE TRACK

We have been a bit light on for runners during the past week but things will start to pick up as the

month progresses. Tonight we have Pitt Street, Bella Venus and Hot To Trot running in Launceston.

Pitt Street and Bella Venus are in the feature races with Pitt Street likely to find the 1200m too short

but we decided to run him rather than barrier trial him before the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes in

Hobart on Cup Day. Bella Venus heads back to filly’s company in the Tasmanian 1000 Guineas

where she looks well placed. Hot To Trot resumes after a slight issue.

On Friday The Deestructor resumes at Ipswich for John Thompson. Terra Amata will run at either

Randwick on Saturday or Canterbury on Monday. This is likely to be her final run for the

preparation.

On Sunday we have Awasita having her first start in Tasmania in the Lady Lynette Plate with Hail

Maher and Princess Royale also nominated. Atalanta Miss is likely to resume in the Tasmanian

Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic on 11 February in Launceston although the Elwick Stakes on

Hobart Cup Day in Hobart could also be an option depending on nominations.

Unique heads to Warwick Farm on Wednesday and Raido to Hawkesbury on Thursday.

We have Savoureux back in work being prepared for a crack at the Sydney Carnival and Hijack Hussy

is enjoying her break. Husson Eagle is back in work.

COBALT CHLORIDE

The cobalt chloride readings above the legal thresh hold which horses trained by Mark Kavanagh,

Peter Moody and Danny O’Brien returned from races that were run during the Melbourne Spring

Carnival was the sort of news our industry simply did not need.

There has been a lot of talk over the past couple of years about the use of cobalt chloride in

thoroughbreds, pacers and trotters.

In April 2014 the head of Integrity Services in Victoria Mr Terry Bailey informed the industry that a

thresh hold had been put in place and that testing would take place. This thresh hold is now in place

for all thoroughbred racing juristrictions in Australia. The thresh hold is twice the one enforced in

Hong Kong!!! In my opinion the fact Mr Bailey made it quite clear what the thresh hold was should

have been enough notice for trainers to be certain their horses were not going to the races over the

thresh hold.

Obviously this wasn’t the case and last week’s statements from RVL naming horses from three very

high profile stables as being over the thresh hold once again should be a stark reminder to all

participants that the illegal use of cobalt chloride or any other illegal additive won’t be tolerated. No

doubt in time we will find out the full story.

In the mean time we will hear all sorts of theories as to how these five horses came to have above

thresh hold levels of cobalt chloride in their systems. RVL have directed massive resources towards

these investigations but the complexity of each of the cases mean we probably won’t see a closure for

some time, probably months.

It is very disappointing that whoever is responsible for these breaches of the rules have not only

tarnished the Victorian Spring Carnival with the time honoured VRC Derby being involved but also

Australian Racing.

At the end of the day it is the trainers responsibility to ensure his horses are presented on race day free

of illegal substances and in good health. Unfortunately, the buck stops with the trainer and the next

few months could be very difficult for the three trainers in question.

Our industry is a multi billion dollar one employing massive numbers of people across Australia and

also is a big export earner for our country. The integrity of our industry can never come into question

with there being no place for those choosing to operate outside the rules.

I only hope that we have seen the end of the positives to cobalt chloride but I feel that this isn’t the

case.

HOBART CUP CARNIVAL

Time certainly does fly at this time of the year and the Hobart Cup Carnival starts with the Tasmanian

Derby Meeting as a twilight on 6 February and Hobart Cup meeting on 9 February. We are putting

together a good weekend but after consideration have decided to leave both Saturday and Sunday free

for our visitors to do as they please. The ‘Wooden Boat Festival’ is on and it is a wonderful event.

We will be arranging to attend the Derby Meeting on Friday evening. The cost for this event is $75

which includes bus transfers from Lenna of Hobart, entry to the course, member’s tickets and high

tea.

On Monday we head to the Hobart Cup meeting. The cost per head is $275 which includes bus

transfers from Lenna of Hobart, entry, lunch, racebook. This doesn’t include drinks.

Please forward me an email if you are planning to attend either Derby or Cup meeting.

At this stage we may have several runners including Awasita, and perhaps Rumeron on Friday night

with Pitt Street and Bella Venus set to run on Cup Day. There could be other runners as well

depending on what happens in the next couple of weeks.

There is a good feel to this year’s Tasmanian Summer Carnival with big fields at every meeting. The

stakes money on offer for the major races is very good given the quality of the opposition.

I will be in touch regarding the Launceston Cup meeting as we get closer. At this stage I am planning

to attend the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale on 12 February in Launceston where our vet

Tim Roberts will also be in attendance which is handy.

All in all we have a busy time ahead in Tasmania over the next few weeks.

MAGIC MILLIONS LOT 426 HINCHINBROOK / MARITESS FILLY

The filly

This filly is a strong well balanced athlete that gets around well and has a nice presence to

her. She is very strong behind and through the hocks. She has a deep girth and looks like she

may go early as her dam did.

She vetted out without any issues and was reared at Milburn Creek one of the NSW’s most

well respected boutique nurseries.

The filly is a September foal and I have decided to pay her up for the rich Adelaide Magic

Millions Two Year Old Classic.

Hinchinbrook

Hinchinbrook was a high class juvenile winning the Group III AJC Skyline Stakes and Listed

Canonbury Stakes before being the first colt home when fourth to Crystal Lily in the Group I

STC Golden Slipper and was then third in the Group I AJC Sires Produce Stakes.

He trained on at three for Group I placings in the AJC All Aged Stakes, MRC Oakleigh Plate

and MVRC William Reid Stakes, before being injured in the UK while preparing for Royal

Ascot and retiring with earnings in excess of $590,000.

He is a three-quarter brother to leading young sire Snitzel and Group III winner Viennese by

champion sire Fastnet Rock from stakes-winning sprinter Snippets’ Lass.

His progeny have hit the ground running with him being placed 2nd

on the First Season Sire’s

List in Australia and was the only First Season Sire to have a runner in the $2 million Magic

Millions Classic on the Gold Coast where he was represented by the early favourite

Carriages.

Maritess

Maritess was a fast Magic Albert stakes placed winner of two, two year old races.

Maritess is a ½ sister to the Group 3 and multiple stakes winner Come Fly With Me.

Maritess has had three foals to race for two winners. The 3rd

dam is the outstanding Group 1

wining mare Dinky Flyer.

It is only early days for Magic Albert as a broodmare sire but he is having good success

crossing with Danehill line mares.

. Hinchinbrook Filly Favourite for Magic Millions

Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse has an early stranglehold on the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic

according to corporate bookie Sportsbet with her Hinchinbrook filly Carriages the early favourite.

Waterhouse trains three of the top four at the head of the Sportsbet all-in market for the juvenile feature

with the only other horse, Prompt Return an unlikely runner.

"Gai is a powerhouse when it comes to two-year-olds and she looks to have at least three quality juveniles

in the camp," Sportsbet's Will Byrne said.

Waterhouse's Clockwise Classic winner Carriages heads betting at $5 ahead of the Breeders Plate winner

Vancouver (Medaglia D'Oro (USA), impressive recent barrier trial winner Ready Already (More Than

Ready USA) and Prompt Return (Beneteau) at $6.

This filly is a strong well balanced athlete that gets around well and has a nice presence to

her. She is very strong behind and through the hocks.

She vetted out without any issues and was reared on Sledmere Stud one of the Hunter

Valley’s most well respected nurseries.

The filly is a September foal and I have decided to pay her up for the rich Magic Millions

series which will see only Magic Millions horses eligible to run for the $10million on offer at

the Magic Millions Premier Day at the Gold Coast each January from 2016.

The filly has been very well received and is filling up quickly. Smart Missile is my pick to be

Champion First Season Sire in Australia for the coming season.

Smart Missile

Overview

The most popular first season sire in many years, Smart Missile retired to stud in 2012 having

captured the imagination of the racing industry with his undiluted brilliance. Smart Missile first

revealed his devastating turn of foot when he won the Breeders’ Plate on debut.

That raw speed was displayed time and time again over his next five starts with several victories over

previously unbeaten future G1 stars Sepoy and Foxwedge.

By Fastnet Rock from a half-sister to promising young sire Northern Meteor, it is no surprise Smart

Missile is considered a most exciting prospect.

Smart Missile, the brightest star of his generation, began his stud career in 2012 at Arrowfield Stud

with outstanding support from Australian breeders.

The brilliant son of leading sire Fastnet Rock was unbeaten at two, defeated all his closest rivals at

Group 2, Group 3 and Listed level, and was Group 1-placed at three in a six-start, 12-month career.

Smart Missile first caught the public eye with a sparkling trial win in September 2010, then came out

on debut to win the AJC Breeders’ Plate 1000m LR by a decisive 1.5 lengths, despite being slowly

away and racing very greenly in the straight. Runners behind him included subsequent ATC

Hobartville S. G2 winner Wild and Proud and G1 performers Darci Be Good and Induna.

Imanun

Imanun is by the great broodmare sire Encosta de Lago whose daughters when crossed with

Danehill line sires have produced the wonderful racehorses Musir, Empress Rock, Pheidon,

Proisir, Beneteau, Sookie and Instinction.

It is simply a cross that works over and over again. Imanun is well related and has had just

the one runner Persian a winner in 2013/14 season.

There are a lot of nice horses in this pedigree that traces back to horses of the calibre of

Zeditave, the 3rd

dam Cloister was a terrifically quick mare.

$700,000 for Smart Missile Colt

Widely tipped as one of the colts of the sale, Arrowfield Stud's Smart Missile colt from Negotiate drew

spirited bidding in the ring on Friday at Magic Millions before eventually being secured by Hawkes

Racing.

Bred by Arrowfield and partners, the powerful bay is a sibling to four winners including this season's

brilliant debut winning two year-old filly Secret Agenda, who was sold at this sale last year for $120,000.

The filly

This is an outstanding type of filly representing one of the very best crosses in Australia at

present. The filly vetted out without any issues and was highly regarded as a type by both

Bill Mitchell and our vet Tim Roberts. I am thrilled to have secured her and look forward to

her getting to the races. She is a cracker of a filly and looks a two year old type to me.

Husson

The filly is by Hussonet’s best son at stud in Husson and is a product of one the most potent

crosses in Australia today. When Hussonet and now his sons are put over Danehill line

mares the results have been amazing.

Danehill line mares mated with Husson have the stakes horses Hussousa, Affable, Will

Be Amazed, Sister Souss, Peron, Hi Son, Star Of Husson and Little Miss Smily. There is

also a filly Go Again which held the 900m record at Sandown out of a Danehill Dancer

mare.

Husson's sire Hussonet also has similar success with the Group 1 winners Reaan, Eagle Falls,

Gold Trail and Group and stakes winners Colorado Claire, Miss Darcey, Step it Up,

Karacatis, Latin News, Members Joy, Rose Of Peace, Werd, Hussy By Choice, Walk With

Attitude, Dirty and Moonlight Hussler coming out of Danehill or his son's daughters.

It should be remember Hussonet came to Australia as a relatively old horse with his

first crop of yearlings in Australia being born in 2004. His first crop in Chile were

dropped in 1995. He is a super stallion and was brought to Australia by John Messara

to be used as a suitable cross with the large number of Danehill line mares in this

country.

Once again Messara was right on the money!!!

I have a very good filly with Tony Gollan named Hijack Hussy by Hussonet out of a

Redoute's Choice mare. She won the Listed Lexus Plate at Flemington on Melbourne Cup

Day. The only other Hussonet filly I purchased was the stakes winner Huiskes.

Head Over Heels

Head Over Heels is by the great sire Fastnet Rock which has worked so well with Husson

with three of his twelve winners to date from this cross of Husson over Fastnet Rock

mares. This includes the stakes filly Little Miss Smiley. Head Over Heels brings a lot to the

table here being a half-sister to the very good sprinter Presently as well as Another Time

which was placed in the Black Opal Stakes.

It is very early days for Fastnet Rock as a broodmare sire. It is hard to imagine Fastnet

Rock not being a successful broodmare sire.

Her half-sister Gifted Lass is the dam of the Group 2 placed Serena Miss. Head Over Heels

is out of the Centaine mare Centaine’s Gift. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Apache Cat Lookalike Headed to Hong Kong

Eye-catching Husson (Chi) gelding Looks Like The Cat has been sold to Hong Kong and will do his

future racing under the care of leading local trainer Casper Fownes.

The flashy chestnut gelding has so far raced 7 times for a 2YO win in Brisbane as well as second placings

in the Group 2 VRC Danehill Stakes, BRC Champagne Classic and Group 3 MRC Caufield Guineas

Prelude.

The Tony Gollan trained 3YO was also third in the Group 1 BRC JJ Atkins Stakes and Group 2 BRC

Sires' Produce Stakes.

Schmidt, who sold Looks Like The Cat for $175,000 prior to his first start only for the deal to fall through,

did not reveal how much the Husson gelding was sold for but said the offer "was too good to refuse".

Gollan has trained Group 1 winners Spirit Of Boom and Temple Of Boom but said Looks Like The Cat

was potentially the best horse he has put a saddle on.

"It is disappointing to lose a horse of his calbire but I respect the owner’s decision," Gollan said.

"There had been a fair few offers on the table at the conclusion of the Brisbane winter carnival but they

were knocked back.

"They came again at the end of his spring campaign and his owners sat down and had a long think about it

before deciding to take the bird in the hand rather than chasing two in the bush.

"It is hard to compete against the money that is being offered, it is easy to see why owners would look to

cash in their chips."

The Husson gelding leaves Australia with only one win next to his name from seven starts but he has

notched five Group placings already.
