Reflection on The Temptation of Christ By Sarah Neau, Director of Religious Education

The First Sunday of Lent is always the story of Jesus being tempted by the devil in the desert. This year we hear Matthew’s version of this story. Why does Jesus need to be tempted? Jesus is showing how we need to combat temptation in our own lives. Lent is 40 days long and should recall for us the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness as well as the 40 years the Israelites spent wandering the desert before entering the Promised Land.

The Israelites found it hard to trust that God would provide for them. They worshipped false gods, they complained about hunger, and were constantly testing God. Unlike the Israelites, Jesus is able to trust fully in God and doesn’t succumb to the temptations of the devil to satisfy his hunger, test God or bend to worship a false god.

Lent for us is about learning to trust in God in our lives. We have the choice to be like the Israelites or be like Jesus. The temptations offered by the devil to Jesus and by the serpent to Adam and Eve in the Garden are the same. In First Letter of John, these temptations are identified by John as “For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father but is from the world. “ (v 16). These are the forms that temptations take for us even to this day – fulfill some desire of the flesh, ap-peal to our eyes, and attack our pride in life.

On Ash Wednesday we are given the tools to combat these temptations in life – prayer (pride in life), fasting (desire of the flesh) and almsgiving (eyes). These practices of piety help us to overcome the temptations placed in our lives. Are we always successful? No, but we are constantly called to engage in these practices. The temptations we face in life are there to help us grow if we choose to learn from them. If we engage in the practices of piety, emphasized in the season of Lent, throughout the year, we will grow in self-knowledge, self-discipline, and obedience to God’s will in our lives. We will learn to exercise our moral virtue and grow closer in relationship to God through prayer.

So think about what your Lenten sacrifice for this year. Is your Lenten sac-rifice something that will draw you closer to God through prayer, fasting and almsgiving? Is your Lenten sacrifice something that you can continue throughout the rest of the year to combat the temptations that the world throws at you? If not, it is just the beginning of Lent and you can change or add to what your Lenten sacrifice will be?

I close with this quote from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, “No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.” May your Lenten journey be a fruitful one that can continue long into the coming year.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is encouraged in the St. Thomas More Adoration Chapel. This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus who is now wonderfully present in the Blessed Sacrament. The adoration chapel is located in the activity center and is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Individual Confessions: There is no more personal experience of God’s mercy than the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Holy Father reminds us, “God is always ready to forgive, and he never tires of forgiving in ways that are continually new and surprising … all of us know well the experience of sin.” (MV 22) Sin separates us from God. It also separates us from the Body of Christ through which we encounter Jesus and through which we are strengthened by the Spirit. That separation alienates us. We have cut ourselves off. Seek reconciliation with the Body of Christ...The Light is On for You!

6 p.m. Wednesdays: Mar. 8, 15, 22, 29, and Apr. 5 8 a.m. Thursdays 3:15 p.m. Saturdays

Stations of the Cross: The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every church. Walk with Jesus this Lent on:

Fridays at 1:30 p.m. (w/the school) and 6 p.m.

Divine Mercy Mass & Novena: The message of Divine Mercy is that God loves us – all of us – no matter how great our sins. Bring your fears, worries, and sickness and receive the graces that Jesus promises. Join us, with one voice, as we say, “Jesus, I trust in You!”

6 p.m. Thursdays, Mar. 9, 16, 23, 30, Apr. 6, 20

Taizé Around the Cross: Come gather around the cross to spend an hour of prayer and meditation on Tuesday, Mar. 21, at 7 p.m. in the church. Fr. Tom will lead this beautiful service that weaves chants with quiet reflection in the darkened church. Take this opportunity to lay down at the cross of Christ your burdens and those of others.

Spiritual Opportunities during Lent

STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the

desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives.

As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God--we want control, power, and answers to all of life's difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation.

Pray for one another James 5:16

By STM Stewardship Committee Prayer is the foundation for

becoming the steward that God wants us to be in all areas of our lives. It can be public or personal, spoken or silent, and it is an integral part of our Lenten journey.

The Stewardship Committee is excited to tell you about the Prayer Intention Baskets which will be introduced on Stewardship of Prayer weekend, March 11th and 12th. The baskets will be placed at all three church entrances for the duration of the Lenten season. All parishioners are invited to place their prayer intentions in these baskets AND to take prayer intentions out of these baskets so they can pray for the intentions of others. You will have the chance to write your prayer in-tention on a form during Mass next weekend, but it won’t be your only chance! Forms will be available next to the baskets throughout Lent and all are invited to add and take intentions as often as they wish throughout the entire Lenten season. As we pray for others’ intentions and find comfort in knowing that others are praying for ours we will be reminded that we truly are a parish family and brothers and sisters in Christ.
