Wheels on Fire We've got a new day and time! Basketball, Rugby, Soccer, Bocce, you play it and we offer it! Wheels on Fire is a sports team designed for athletes who enjoy a variety of sports. No wheel-chair? No problem, we have extra chairs for use during program. Athletes of all abilities are wel-come. The team practices basic sports skills, team cooperation and rules of competitive play. This program focuses on exposure to a variety of wheelchair sports with the option for competitive skill development. We may also engage in special activities such as field trips and holiday parties. Snacks may be provided. Participants must be able to participate in a 1:5 staff to participant ratio and be independent with personal care needs or provide an attendant.

Programs for children and teens with disabilities

Fun for All This class focuses on fun with music, games, arts and crafts, movement activities and a field trip. This play program is designed for children with developmental disabilities including those with Au-tism Spectrum Disorders. Children should bring a sack lunch to class each week. Participants must be able to function in a 1:3 staff to participant ratio and independent with personal care needs.

Power Soccer Drop-In Power soccer is an electrifying and growing multi-player sport designed for those who use power chairs. Come join our power soccer teams San Jose Steamrollers, Rockets, and Flash to help de-velop your skills in a power chair while playing an exciting sport. You will get the opportunity to play with your team in local and national tournaments. Depending on skill level and coaches re-cruitment, participants will be placed on one of the three teams. Steamroller practice from 10am-12pm. Rockets practice from 12pm- 2pm. Flash practices from 1pm-3pm. Participants must be able to have a power chair adaptable for power soccer. Participants must be able to function in a 1:8 staff to participant ratio and independent with personal care needs. There will only be two drop-in date for this session.

Power Soccer Skills Development Join the San Jose Steamrollers, Rockets, and Flash in the electrifying and growing sport of power soccer! This program is designed to improve participants skills and understanding of power soccer. This is a great way for participants to learn the game of power soccer in a recreational setting. Par-ticipants must be able to function in a 1:8 staff to participant ratio, independent with personal care needs or provide an attendant for personal care.

Attendants will be required to pass a City of San Jose background check in programs that serve youth under 18 years of age.

Teen Social Time Come down to Mayfair's game room to have a good time! We have a pool table, foosball table, ping pong, xbox and playstation. We will give you time with the video games as well as do some group structured activities. Work on your social skills while having fun! Your input will help us de-velop games and activities that will be fun for you. This class is structured for teen with disabilities with a higher staff ratio of 5 to 1. Your teen must be able to function within this ratio and be inde-pendent with personal care or bring an attendant.

Programs for teens and adults with disabilities

Simply Cooking This introductory course for adults with developmental disabilities covers basic kitchen safety, basic menu planning, and preparing simple dishes. Menus will include breakfast, lunch, dinners, and deserts. Class includes lecture, observation, and hands on preparation. Students will receive instructional materials to take home. Class is conducted in a teaching kitchen which utilizes gas burners. Participants must be able to function in a 1:4 staff to participant ratio, independent with personal care needs or provide an attendant for personal care.

G.O. Fitness Goal Oriented Fitness is designed for youth and teens with a disability. Whether you are trying fit-ness for the first time or want to upgrade your fitness goals this is the program for you! Our trained staff will safely guide you through customized adapted exercises and circuit sessions that will work with your ability level. We work with treadmills, exercise balls, stationary bikes, resistance equipment and mat exercises to deliver a fun adapted program that will keep you coming back for more. Participants must be able to function in a 1:3 staff to participant ratio, independent with per-sonal care needs or provide an attendant for personal care.

Wheelchair Tennis—Beginner & Intermediate Grab your tennis racquet and bounce out to the Wallenberg Park (Curtner/ Cottle) Tennis courts in San Jose. This program is for beginner to intermediate players. Our coaching staff will help you to reach your tennis goals. Sessions will include drills, stroke analysis, fun games and free play. Participants must be able to function in a 1:5 staff to participant ratio, independent with personal care needs or provide an attendant for personal care. Attendants will be required to pass a City of San Jose background check in programs that serve youth under 18 years of age.

Adapted Golf This program is a hole in one for persons with physical disabilities and offers professional instruc-tion in Adapted Golf. Components of the program include stroke analysis, chipping, pitching, put-ting, and golf basics. Participants must be able to function in a 1:5 staff to participant ratio, inde-pendent with personal care needs or provide an attendant for personal care.

Wheelchair Basketball Nothin' but net! Come out and shoot some hoops with your friends and learn the exciting sport of wheelchair basketball. All ability levels welcome. No sports chair, no problem; we have extra sports chairs available to use during program. Tournament opportunities are available for big gamers. Don’t miss out! Participants must be able to function in a 1:10 staff to participant ratio, independent with personal care needs or provide an attendant for personal care. No practice July 13th.

Adapted Bowling It's a strike! Come join us for our immensely popular bowling program. Due to popular demand - located at Bowlmor San Jose, 5420 Thornwood Drive in San Jose on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:30pm. Ages 11 and up are welcome. Register today, the lanes are going fast! Monthly Social Come join us on the last Tuesday of the month for some fun! Each month will have a different theme or activity. Examples include Bingo, holiday parties, playing in the game room, arts and crafts, etc. Please register in advance to reserve your spot. Contact the community center if you would like to receive a flyer with details of the month’s event. Leisure Club Come out and meet new friends! This leisure program is designed to develop leisure awareness and social skills for individuals with developmental disabilities. Activities include crafts, games, music, parties and more. Participants who are able will go on one community outing per session. Individuals must be able to understand simple directions and require minimal supervision. Partici-pants must be able to function in a 1:5 staff to participant ratio and independent with personal care needs.

Adapted Fitness Don't put it off any longer! The time has come to jump start your fitness level. The program is locat-ed at a fully equipped Camden Community Fitness Center for individuals 18 and up with a physical disability. Each participant will receive a customized workout program designed to achieve their per-sonal fitness goals. Participants must be able to function in a 1:5 staff to participant ratio, independ-ent with personal care needs or provide an attendant for personal care. Around the Town Club Join us for a night on the town! This social club utilizes community trips to improve socialization, lei-sure awareness and independent living skills. Try new things and explore your community with the support and encouragement of friendly, knowledgeable staff. Past activities have included movies, restaurants, sporting events, theme events and nights at the theatre. The first night of the program will take place at Camden Community Center. Location thereafter varies based on participants cho-sen activities. Participants will be assigned to a group the first night. An event calendar will be passed out the second week of program. Members must be able to participate within a 1:6 staff to participant ratio and independent with their personal care needs. Please note: registration fee co-vers staffing costs only. Additional weekly fees may be required based on chosen activity costs.

HIRLN Pizza and Movie Head Injury Recreation and Leisure Network is a social club for survivors of head injuries and strokes. Join us at Luigi's Pizza in Campbell for pizza and a soda. Then we will walk over to the Campbell Plaza Theaters to see a movie that is play-ing around 7pm. Participants must be able to function in a 1 to 8 ratio and be inde-pendent with personal care needs or bring an attendant with them. Attendant must pay for their own meal and movie ticket or register for the class. Please call Liz Best @ 794-1065 to receive a flyer or with any questions.

Urban Explorers Get out and explore! This is a Saturday walking club directed towards teens and young adults with disabilities. Each week, we will meet at the Roosevelt Community Center and travel using public transportation to different trails, museums, festivals and parks in the area. San Jose has a lot to of-fer its urban dwelling explorers. We'll learn about our unique community settings while meeting new friends and getting a little exercise. Participants must be able to participate in a 1:5 staff to partici-pant ratio and independent with personal care needs.

Group Arts Class This program is geared towards groups of people with disabilities. Come check out the Mayfair Community Center and relax with some arts and crafts. This program is designed to improve fine motor skills, creativity and social skills. You will be guided through art projects, gardening, and specialty crafts. National Night Out @ Mayfair (Therapeutic Group) National Night Out is a yearly event at Mayfair Community Center. The community comes togeth-er to celebrate with a carnival type atmosphere. You do not have to be a past patient from SCVMC. Fiesta Familiar This support group, Fiesta Familiar, is sponsored by Fiesta Educativa Sur de la Bahia, a non profit organization of Latino parents of children with special needs. Fiesta Familiar brings Span-ish speaking parents of children with special needs together to learn, get informed, and support each other. Different topics will be discussed each month based on the needs of those attend-ing. Northern California Junior Sports Camp Junior Sports Camp covers introductory and intermediate instruction in both recreational and competitive wheelchair sports for individuals with physical disabilities ages 5-21. World class wheelchair athletes provide instruction in a variety of sports. The camp is sponsored by the City of San José and Far West Wheelchair Athletic Association. Campers have a residential or day camp option. For more information and registration materials, contact Alex Donaldson at 408-794-6290 or via e-mail at [email protected]. On line registration is not accepted.

Camp Superstuff- Asthma Camp Every summer, Breathe California offers Camp Superstuff, a week-long day camp held within the region served by Breathe California of the Bay Area. This year, the City of San Jose, Mayfair Community Center, is partnering with Breathe California to offer Camp Su-perstuff. This camp is designed for children 6-12 suffering from asthma, Camp Superstuff blends asthma education curriculum with traditional summer camp activities.

Healthy Challenge Type 2 Diabetes Camp Is your child diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes or pre-pre-diabetes? Are they close to being diagnosed? Has your pediatrician encouraged your child to eat healthier, exercise more, or lose weight? If you said YES to any of these questions, then this camp is for you! Come have fun and learn about healthy lifestyle choices. This is a camp with art, sports, activities, healthy snacks, and diabetes education. A diabetes educator and dietician will be at the camp to answer questions and teach healthy living skills. Camp staff will get the kids moving and having fun! Ages 8-15. This camp is a joint collaboration between the City of San Jose and the American Diabetes Association. Children must qualify for this camp.

Playcamp These day camps are designed for children with cognitive disabilities who need a higher level of staff assistance for participation including those with Autism Spectrum disorder. Activities will include arts and crafts, games, circle time, a field trip, and more. Children should bring a sack lunch to camp each day. Participants must be able to function in a 1:3 staff to child ratio and be independent with personal care needs or bring an attendant with them. Attendants will need to be fingerprinted by the City of San Jose.

Diabetes Camp– Type 1 Children This collaborative day camp program is provided by the City of San Jose's Therapeutic Services and California Diabetes Association. There will be fun activities, outings, games, crafts, and diabetes education. Nursing staff will be on site to help monitor blood sugars and provide education to participants and families. Adapted Digital Arts Camp Join our introductory multimedia camp for teens and young adults with disabilities! You'll work on projects in music production, video editing, graphic design, and photography. Material costs and snacks will be covered. Participants must be able to function in a 1:5 staff to participant ratio, independent with personal care needs or provide an at-tendant for personal care needs. (If a participant is under 18, personal attendants are required to pass a City of San Jose background check.) REQUIRED PREREQUESITE: MUST HAVE AT LEAST BASIC MAC COMPUTER LITERACY
