Theriogenology is the branch of veterinary medicine that focuses on reproduction, including the physiology and pathology of male and female reproductive systems in animals and the clinical practice of veterinary obstetrics and gynecology.

The Theriogenology Service specializes in dog and cat reproductive services and offers full-service care in the Wilford and Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital.

The Theriogenology Residency program at the college is sponsored by the American Kennel Club/Theriogenology Foundation, making Auburn one of only four veterinary medical programs nationally to receive a companion animal residency.

WHAT WE DO

The Theriogenology Service offers a variety of services that focus on reproduction in the companion animal (dog or cat). These services include breeding management, with same day progesterone results in the female, to semen collection and evaluation in the male. Other services offered include semen cryopreservation (freezing), semen shipping (frozen and cooled; domestic and international), semen cooling trials,

same day Brucellosis screening, pregnancy diagnosis via ultrasonography, high risk pregnancy management, pre-whelping/queening radiographs, neonatal care training, infertility workups for both male and female patients (canine and feline) and all assisted or advanced insemination techniques for both species including transcervical inseminations (TCI). The service also offers emergency services for both males and females including penile and scrotal injuries or difficult deliveries.

HOW WE DO ITThe Small Animal Theriogenology service utilizes state-of-the-art equipment for use with veterinary patients, including:

• Transabdominal Ultrasonography • Digital Radiography • Vaginoscopy • Computer Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) • Bio psies

• Testicular • Uterine

WHO WE AREThe Small Animal Theriogenology Service is run by two veterinary faculty members who are both board-certified by the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT). The service has one small animal theriogenology resident veterinarian who is undergoing specialty training to become a theriogenologist and one licensed veterinary technician who assists the veterinarians and senior veterinary students. Members of our team are always available to help you and your pet.

APPOINTMENTSAppointments can be made by referral from your primary care veterinarian. At the time of referral, they will be asked to provide copies of previous tests and reports. We also accept appointments directly from owners and we can contact your primary care veterinarian for background information.
