Turkmenistan Grass Roots LPG recovery plant built for Intergaz in Turkmenistan. This cryogenic plant features molecular sieve dehydration, a Mafi-Trench Turbo Expander to chill the inlet gas to –77 °C (–106°F) to condense hydrocarbon liquids and LPG fractionation. TDE supplied all process modules, pipe

rack, utilities, control room and electrical systems. Construction and start up were completed with local workforce under TDE supervision. Commissioning and start up was completed by TDE.

TDE Oil and Gas Processing Units in Tuha Field, China, include a 300,000 m3/d LPG/NGL recovery plant fabricated in Canada and a 100,000 m3/d LPG/NGL recovery plant fabricated in China utilizing TDE design and TDE supplied components. Oil is processed in a 1,000,000 tonne /year oil stabilization plant designed by TDE and manufactured under a partnership of TDE and Daqing Energy.

Modularization and Transportation

Delivering the Product

TDE helped pioneer natural gas processing plant modularization and is now one of the world’s leading exporters of this expertise.

Modular design saves both time and money when compared to traditional on-site construction. TDE configures the processing equipment inside a quality controlled environment where manufacturing can take place quickly.

TDE ships the processing plant by truck, rail, ship, barge and air in sections or modules. Each module is designed to suit the mode of transportation by which it will be shipped. This helps to ensure on-time delivery anywhere in the world.

Once the modules reach their destination, they can be installed and commissioned in a matter of weeks. If the clients’ needs change in the future, the modular construction allows for relocation of the plant. TDE processing plants are operating in Canada, United States, Mexico, Brazil, Poland, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Libya, Tunisia, Angola, Syria, Iran, Kuwait, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and China.

Angola TDE supplied a LPG recovery plant to Chevron for installation in Cabinda, Angola. Supply included TDE packaged reciprocating gas compressor, gas chilling using mechanical refrigeration, LPG fractionation and associated utility systems.

Glycol Dehydration facility manufactured in TDE shops as modules complete with knock down stairway and platforms. Modules were shipped from Edmonton, Canada to Brazil and erected under TDE supervision.

Modular construction offers the advantage of custom design and fabrication to meet client specifications and regional shipping limits. Modules can be factory assembled and function tested at the TDE fabrication facility prior to disassembly and delivery to field location.

TransportationDelivering the Product

TEG glycol contactor exiting TDE shop was trucked to a local rail siding and delivered by rail to Houston, Texas. The contactor with a wall thickness of 4 inches (102mm) and a shipping weight of 437,000 lbs (198,220 kg) was built to ASME Section VIII, Division 2 code and was installed on an offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

Glycol dehydration vessels and process modules are packaged and ready for shipment from TDE’s yard. To satisfy the client’s stringent delivery schedule and first gas date, the equipment was shipped from Edmonton, Canada to Poland aboard a Russian Ilyushin-76TD cargo plane.

TDE recently supplied 2 identical 30 mmscfd refrigeration plants and amine plants to Birchcliff Energy for installation in British Columbia. TDE designed, fabricated, commissioned and started up the equipment. Birchcliff is so pleased with Thermo Design’s work that they recently orderd a third larger capacity set of equipment from TDE

Libya

TDE has its design and manufacturing facilities in Edmonton located on 16 acres. Two office buildings hold the design staff, administration and corporate headquarters. Six shops contain the fabrication and assembly facilities. Each shop has multiple bridge cranes and all-terrain mobile cranes for assembly and yard work

Control panel testing: A dual redundant GE Fanuc PLC control system manufactured for offshore application is assembled and tested in TDE’s dedicated panel shop.

An exhaust steam condenser manufactured by TDE for Alstom Power. The condenser contains 7,228 stainless steel tubes and is 4 m in diameter and 11 m long. The condenser was installed on a turbine waste heat recovery application at Shell Canada’s Scotford Refinery and power generation plant.

TDE designed and fabricated a 220 mmscfd glycol dehydration unit and refrigeration plant as well as a 28,000 bbls/d condensate stabilzation unit for Waha Oil in Libya at their Faregh II facility. TDE also assisted in the installation, commissioning and startup of the equipment.

Turnkey Grass Roots Plants

The engineering, manufacturing and construction of a grass roots, turnkey plant requires a trusting relationship between the owner and their chosen engineering, procurement, fabrication (EPF) and construction company.

When the EPF and owner are thousands of miles apart and speak different languages, new challenges arise beyond the design and supply of process equipment. TDE has been able to meet these challenges and work with our clients around the world to meet their process plant needs. TDE can take responsibility for the entire process plant or enter joint venture agreements with our clients or their partners when this would maximize efficiency and economics.

At TDE, we are committed to quality and dedicated to satisfying our clients’ needs. As a result, we have forged long-term relationships with many of our clients.

OAO Yakutgazprom

When OAO “Yakutgazprom” decided to build a gas processing and LPG recovery plant in eastern Siberia to satisfy local needs, TDE was awarded the contract. During the subsequent 10 years, the plant has been expanded twice. Both times, TDE was the “Yakutgazprom” supplier of choice. We continue to service the plant and are working with “Yakutgazprom” in planning for their future needs.

PetroBras

Thermo Design recently designed and fabricated two gas processing plants for PetroBras in Brazil, a 90 MMSCFD turbo expander C3+ recovery plant and a 129 MMSCFD TEG dehydration plant. Thermo Design sent experienced senior staff to the job site for construction installation supervision of the modular units followed by commissioning, start up, performance testing and operator training. Working together with the customer, our staff ensured that both plants were completed and started quickly and smoothly.

Polish Oil & Gas Corporation

When Polish Oil & Gas Corporation (POGC) had to process sour gas and liquids in its Zielin Field, they decided to construct a gas processing plant – the first to be built by POGC in Poland. In 1995, TDE was selected to engineer, fabricate, install and start up the original plant. TDE subsequently completed an expansion project in 1999. TDE continues to provide parts, service and engineering support services to the Zielin plant and other gas producing fields for POGC.

TDE was awarded a contract with Karakudukmunai/Lukoil, in June 2007, to supply an Oil Processing Plant with a nominal inlet oil flow of 6,000 m3/day plus an Associated Gas Processing plant designed for a capacity of 15,600 Nm3/hr. The contract included: detailed design and fabrication of the Crude Oil and Gas Processing Plants; supervision of field assembly of the modular TDE supplied equipment; responsibility for commissioning, startup and operational performance test. The complete facility was operational in February 2009

Russia Thermo Design was awarded a contract with ZAO Stimul, to expand the existing facilities of an Oil and Gas Processing Plant near the Orenburg Region of Russia. The scope of the project includes the design and supply of equipment to upgrade the existing train, and supply an additional train, each with the ability to process reservoir fluids to a maximum of 500,000 tonnes/year in product crude oil. In addition, the design services for the future phases of the plant expansion were to be completed, including one more processing train to bring the production of the plant to 1,500,000 tonnes/year. The project was completed in 2008

Yakutgazprom — The Yakutsk Gas Plant process, electrical and pipe rack modules were shipped from TDE and installed during the short Siberian summer. The equipment was designed and manufactured for Russia’s severe Siberian climate using proven northern Alberta technology.

Polish Oil & Gas Company — The Zielin Gas Plant includes wellhead facilities, condensate stabilization, amine unit, three stage ‘CLAUS’ sulphur recovery unit, refrigeration unit, LPG recovery, all required utilities and control systems.

PetroBras — TDE designed and fabricated a turbo expander package, glycol dehydration unit and a condensate stabilization unit for the Catu facility. TDE also supplied the necessary control system, supervised the equipment installation and commissioned and started up the equipment.

OrenburgNeft

In 1992, TDE began its relationship with OrenburgNeft of Russia. OrenburgNeft faced the challenge of treating one million tonnes per year of crude oil at the unusually high pressure of 490 psig (4068 kPag) (vessel design pressure). OrenburgNeft wanted the crude to be preheated externally from the treaters and then electrostatically treated. TDE was there to provide the fabricated process modules, including free water knock out vessels, heaters, treaters, shell and tube heat exchangers, modular pipe rack, control room and SCADA-based control system. In addition, TDE was responsible for field construction and start up of the facility.

As a result of this success, TDE was awarded the contract to engineer, fabricate, install, commission and start up a 220 MMSCFD (2.2 billion m3/year) grass roots turnkey gas processing plant. The TDE supplied gas processing plant included:

TDE also supplied, programmed and commissioned the plant DCS (distributed control system) and ESD PLC (emergency shutdown programmable logic controllers).

Our cooperation with OrenburgNeft included the preparation of an engineering study for an oil stabilization plant and mini refinery to be installed on the site of the Zaikinskoye Gas Processing Plant.

Tyumen Neft Company (TNK) of Russia subsequently purchased OrenburgNeft. TDE continues to service our past projects and is working with TNK to explore new opportunities for the supply of oil and gas production equipment.

Quality ControlDoing it Right

From the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean off Canada’s East Coast to the tropical waters of the Gulf of Mexico or South China Sea, TDE has supplied equipment for fixed shallow water platforms and floating production, storage and offloading vessels (FPSO).

Offshore applications require sound engineering and rigorous quality control during manufacturing. TDE has answered this challenge.

Total Quality Management System

TDE employs a Total Quality Management System. Our Quality Control System is registered with the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the National Board of Boilers and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI), and the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA). Indonesia

The Petro-Canada Terra Nova Floating Production

Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel sailing to its

location 350 kilometers east of Newfoundland, Canada.

TDE manufactured glycol regeneration modules

assembled in TDE yard. The system regenerated 65 USGPM of TEG to 99 wt%

using an electric reboiler and stripping column. The

modules were manufactured to withstand the harsh Atlantic environment and wave action

experienced on the FPSO.

TDE supplied a 470 MMSCFD natural gas TEG dehydration facility to Mobil Oil Indonesia. The facility included two parallel trains of gas processing and glycol regeneration. All engineering was completed by TDE and fabrication was completed in Canada and Indonesia to satisfy local content requirements. Commissioning and start up included TDE personnel.

Thermo Design was awarded a contract, in March 2008,to supply a Heavy Crude Oil and Heat Medium Heating Plant designed for the Russian arctic. The contract also included supply of a heat medium system. The project was completed in late 2009.

To meet our customers needs in heavy oil and bitumen processing Thermo Design has combined our expertise with ProSep Technologies design and fabricate horizontal flow treaters for heavy oil and bitumen production.

A horizontal flow treater offers several advantages over a conventional upflow treater in heavy oil applications. As the process fluid flows through the vessel and the water droplets suspended in the oil phase coalesce into larger droplets until they reach the a critical diameter where Stokes’ Law applies. Stokes Law defines the terminal settling velocity of a particle as it falls through a fluid. In a horizontal flow treater the settling velocity is perpendicular to the process flow velocity whereas the upflow treater design has a process flow velocity that opposes the settling velocity as defined in Stokes Law. The result is that if the parameters in Stokes Law are fixed, a horizontal flow regime can remove a smaller droplet size then a conventional upflow treater, which results in a more efficient system.

A horizontal flow treater uses a vertical electrostatic grid system. As the oil phase progresses through the vessel it can be exposed to several stages of electrostatic fields of varying potentials. Built-in adjustability allows these fields to match the water content remaining in the oil phase, thus ensuring complete dehydration.

One further advantage is the ability to incorporate mechanical coalescers in combination with the electrostatic grids. These coalescers can be placed in the process stream to provide either bulk or polished coalescence which further enhances the dehydration capability of the treater.

TrainingTDE is committed to providing all employees with training to help develop the necessary skills to conduct pre-use inspections, the selection and limitations, the required specific hazard controls, the basic mechanical and the maintenance requirements of the equipment, tool or material used on the job.

TDE conducts job specific training to ensure that each employee can do the job and knows how to do it right.

Training is conducted at orientation, safety meetings, when an employee is assigned new or different work, when an employee is moved to a new site or location, when a new process or material is introduced or after an incident and, is reviewed at regularly scheduled intervals.

We strongly believe that training is the right path to take to improve the quality and effectiveness of the OHSE program at TDE.
