LESSON 1 June 1, 2014

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

God’s Love Is Seen in Righ-teousness and Judgment, Psalm 33:4-9.

All God’s works are right, according to truth, righteousness, judgment and goodness. God has never done anything that violates the principle that He is perfect in all His ways and works. When God created the earth, it was perfect in righteousness, judgment and goodness. A perfect God does perfect works. The command to create the earth was not an imperfect command or a command with an imperfect result. God’s command to create was the word of the Lord. “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God” (Heb. 11:3). We have a great God who by His one and only word commanded, and the entire creation appeared suddenly “For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast” (Psalm 33:9). God spoke the command to create and the creation suddenly existed. The greatness of God includes His control over all his creation. “He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the

depth in storehouses” (verse 7). God sets the boundaries of the seas and controls the depths of the oceans. God’s greatness in creating and maintaining His creation should cause all the inhabitants of the earth to “fear the Lord” (verse 8). The word awe means “to be afraid.” God should be held in reverence and the greatest respect for His awesome power exhibited in creation. God’s power to create produced a creation that is obviously by supernatural design. God’s power in creation instantly produced exactly what He envisioned.

EXAMINING THE TEXT

Genesis 1:1–2:3. The Bible student must decide for himself whether creation was an act or a process. Some believe in evolution—a process set in motion by some chance event. Others believe in theistic evolution—a process that God set in motion. This writer believes creation was an act of God. Genesis 1:1 stands as a record of a completed action, a finished action and an independent clause. To present Genesis 1:1 as an incomplete action, one must go

outside the Bible record for reasons to believe creation was a process. Some believe Genesis 1:1 is an introductory statement that is part of the first day in a six day process. In the past, at a time God calls the beginning, this creation sprang into existence in obedience to the one command of God. By His command, God began with an instantly perfect and inhabitable creation. The Bible speaks of the creation as a birth, as one sudden event (Job 38:4-8). The Word of God explains creation as a sudden event. “I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass” (Isa. 48:3). The Bible declares the creation was instantly completed (Heb. 11:3). The creation existed by one command, a completed act that produced an instant creation as if a curtain were suddenly spread out (Isa. 40:21, 22). All these references agree that the creation was an act, not a process. It does not take a leap of faith to believe God instantly completed a perfect and habitable creation. God created man on the sixth day to rule over the material creation. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Gen. 1:26, 27). The word dominion means “to rule over.” “Let them have dominion” (verse 26) teaches the whole human race has the rule

over all the earth and all that is in it and on it. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit agreed as One and acted as One in creating mankind in the threefold image of God. Man is a triune being—one person consisting of mind, body and spirit. On the seventh day, God rested from all the work He had created and made. God’s action of resting on day seven gives the principle of setting aside one day each week for rest. The human body needs time to rest and recoup strength for the coming week of work. During the Law Age, Israel had the seventh day set aside for rest and worship. In the New Testament era, the Lord’s churches met on the first day of the week in honor of the resurrection of Christ. This first day is the proper day in this church age to devote to worship and rest.

SPONSOR’S GUIDE 5

All people exist due to the power of God to give life.

Psalm 136:5-9. The psalmist declared God in His wisdom created the earth and all that is therein and the heavens and all that is therein. God’s creation reveals His order. His mercy is extended to all.

Psalm 146:5-10. God is the hope for mankind because He is the all powerful Creator. God’s love and truth are revealed in His creation.

Isaiah 44:21-24. God created the heavens and the earth. He also created the nation of Israel. The same God who produced the creation by the act of His power commanded the act of the conception of the nation of Israel. Israel the nation is described as the product of conception in the womb.

Jeremiah 10:10-16. God created the world by His power and ordered it by His wisdom. In the act of creation, God spoke and suddenly stretched out His creation. There is no other god who can compare to the one true God.

Zechariah 12:1. God’s act of creation was by the word of His power. He spoke and suddenly the creation sprang into a habitable existence.

Acts 14:15. The God of Heaven created all things that the eye can see in the world. God’s almighty power is unlimited.

Colossians 1:16, 17. God is the source. He existed before His creation. He commanded and the heavens and the earth existed.

Hebrews 11:3. God created by the word of His power. The Bible declares creation to be an act by the one command or one word from

God. Creation by the word of God must be accepted by faith.

Revelation 4:11. The Bible record repeatedly states that God created all things. All His creation should honor and praise the Lord.

Revelation 10:6. God who created all things made time for mankind. God permits time for mankind to get right with God. At some point, there will be no more delay in God’s acts of judgment upon this wicked world.

Revelation 14:7. In Genesis 1:1 and in the last book of the Bible, the Bible record is clear that God is the Creator.

RELEVANCE OF THE TEXT

It is God’s purpose that all mankind know and acknowledge God as the Creator of all things. He created all things for His own pleasure. The one true God is not like the idols made by the imagination and the hands of men. He is the Creator and cannot be created by man. By His power, He spoke and the creation suddenly existed. The word of His power instantly produced a beautiful, perfect, inhabitable creation. God’s love for His creation is seen in the order of it. He controls the times, the seasons and placed man in charge of the creation. Mankind has the responsibility to use the resources God has placed in this creation wisely and responsibly. All we need for a healthy life on the earth is within reach. God expects mankind to use the proper care and protection for the resources God has placed in the earth. God’s new creation will also be by the word of His power. It will not take God six days to create the new

6 SPONSOR’S GUIDE

Heaven and the new earth. It will be a command and not a process. “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth” (Isa. 65:17). God’s Word describes the beauty and majesty of the new creation in Revelation 21. Every person should be able to look at God’s creation and be convinced of His existence. God’s power and love for mankind is evidenced by the order of the creation. God has set laws that govern the actions of the sun, moon, stars, earth, gravity, mankind and true worship. God who created all things should be honored, praised and worshiped as the one true God. God’s love for mankind is seen by His desire to reveal Himself to His creation and to enact a plan of redemption through His Son Jesus. God’s creation includes all a person needs to be healthy and to thrive. There is water to drink, air to breathe and food to eat. God has also made it possible for men, women, boys and girls to know Him as their personal Savior. For those who choose to answer His call to salvation by repentance and faith, there is a home in Heaven. God also created hell as a place for those who reject God.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATION

Man cannot live on the earth properly without honoring and

acknowledging the God who created it. “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands” (Acts 17:24). As the Creator, God deserves the praise and worship of all His creation. “They should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: for in him we live, and move, and have our being” (verses 27, 28). God brings the message of salvation to every person. “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Rom. 10:8, 9). Those who answer the call of God to salvation will be eternally saved. God’s Word the Bible explains how to live on the earth. God’s rules are given for the happiness and health of mankind. Those who ignore God’s rules for living found in the Bible will live a miserable and unhappy existence. Those who try to live with God and then die without God will spend eternity without God in the lake of fire. God who created all things gave His Word as the guide for life on the earth and for eternity.
