ECOLOGY HYPOTHESIS:

Many cities throughout the United States are car centric. This has be proven to decrease the quality of life for residents in the cities, and further increases our impact on the environment. Zooming further out and looking at the culture of cities that where developed before the car, they still maintain the walkablity and small local market, like there original design. Some cities that have become car centric have made the conversion, such as Copenhagen, Germany, which actual has to monitor its bike traffic, but the model for there integration came from Amsterdam. The city of Amsterdam is clearly a car-less city, in which despite the social class most ride bikes. The simplicity of the bike for transportation and set in a urban context that supports this mode of transportation. Cities like Atlanta are just understanding the importance of these easy of transportation, and the building of the Belt-Line will increase these efforts, but there is more to just the Belt-Line.

How can a cycling and urban farming improve the impact of the Belt-Line and be implemented as a hub towards a less oil depended community?

The bicycle represents the perfect mesh of man and machine, offering affordable transportation that most anyone can enjoy. Since the Belt-Line is on shallow grade development, cycling also serves as a easy way to move about. By implementing this ideology into a ecological systems like the Belt-Line, the bicycle will increase means of travel. This will be obtained by identify strategic points on the Belt-Line, and creating a hub for all ranges of cyclist. Since the cycling culture does not represent just one specific group of people many needs will need to be met. Also identifying a site that would support a urban farm, which also serves as a market. My thesis will identify how a small implementations into a big system can change the current state of a city. The hub will represent a move towards a less oil depended city using cycling and urban farm as the ecological implementations to link the Belt-Line to the citizens of Atlanta. This is urban ecology.

ATLANTA ECOLOGY

The City of Atlanta is a predominantly car controlled city, with more focus on driving and not on alternative modes of transportation. Citizens of Atlanta have very few choices in alternative modes of transportation and without an organized system for travel Atlanta is heavily depended on oil and the car. Furthermore, the city lacks an easy means of obtaining food without the use of the car. Urban farming not only would decreases the amount of transportations of food but also the need for Atlanta residents to drive to get food.

The highly publicized Belt-Line will provide a critical link in Atlanta’s move towards alternative modes of transportation and could drastically improve the quality of life for the citizens of Atlanta. The kink in the link is the Belt-Line lacks plans for a hub, that supports biking, and urban farming. Like a ecological system, if one aspect is imbalanced or negligent the system does not function properly, resulting in the extinction.
