The initiates in their ecru Filipiniana gowns and their sponsors or “ninangs” in their red gowns line up for the Initiation Rites.

The Eminent Filipino Women Awardees with Dr. Naval and Dr. Williams.

Dr. Naval with the cake of plenty and sharing the toast with Dr. Williams and sister Thetans for more glorious and meritorious PLT years together!

PLT Philippines 40th Ruby Anniversary ProceedingsLast July 31, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. onwards, the lady-members of the Pi Lambda Theta Philipines

Area Chapter, came together to celebrate 40 years of “Passion and Leadership In Transformational Education” at the Quezon City Sports Club. We were joined by Dr. Patricia Williams, President of the Pi Delta Kappa-Pi Lambda Theta-Future Educators Association (PDK-PLT-FEA). The PLT ladies, in their glorious ruby gowns, were joined by 40 initiates in their ecru Filipiniana ensembles. Also joining us was Dr. Lagrada, President of PDK Philippines Area Chapter. And of course, we gathered together to honor 24 eminent lady educators who are presidents or have been past presidents of colleges and universities nationwide. This is the third time since 1973 that the “Eminent Filipino Women Awards” has been given continuing on with the tradition of honouring outstanding women educators’ contributions to nation building through initiatives and interventions in education.

Dr. Victoria C. Naval welcomed all attendees to the celebration with a brief history of PLT Philippines Area Chapter. She mentioned that it was in 1973 when Dr. Wilma Shaeffer initiated the 50+ original PLT members with the main criteria of academic leadership. Since then, our membership has grown to more than 700 members with the unique characteristic of being a society of lady educators all with doctorate degrees. With the current “Champion” Board of Directors she will be working on empowering the institutional nodes for more active participation in research,

community extension and educational scholarship. She has already been in touch with industrial leaders for these sponsorships with the end product of more meaningful participation in the country’s economic and social upliftment through education.

In keeping with the concept of the Chalk Walk, a way to honour our favourite teachers, Dr. Vivien Talisayon, immediate past president of PLT, introduced the guest speaker Dr, Patricia Williams using a mnemonic of her name: P = personable; A = amiable; T = tireless; R = responsible; I = inspiring; C = caring; I = incredible and A = amazing!

Dr. Patricia Williams is the current President of the PDK Family composed of the Pi Delta Kappa (PDK), Pi Lambda Theta (PLT) and Future Educators Association (FEA). Her message revolved around the Dash poem by Linda Ellis; which mentioned the birth date and the date of death,

separated by a dash, seen on tombstones. As the poem said, the dash represents what has happened in a person’s life – which is more important. And as teachers, that dash shows the difference we have made in the lives of people; especially along the 3 tenets of service, research and leadership. She expressed her hope that soon there will be a FEA Philippines Area Chapter to complete the Family. PLT and PDK members should collaborate to mentor and develop students who will be teachers in the future.

Dr. Heraclio Lagrada, President of the Pi Delta Kappa Philippines Area Chapter expressed his agreement with what Dr. Williams has suggested. He congratulated PLT on its 40th anniversary and vowed to work closely with its Board to be able to realize the PDK-PLT-FEA vision. He also invited everybody to attend the PDK initiation rites to be held the following day.

The highlights of the Ruby celebration are the conferment of the Medal and Plaque of Honor to the 24 “Eminent Filipino Women Awardees” and the initiation of 40 new PLT members. Following is a photo collage to document this momentous occasion.
