Chairman’s Foreword
How time flies! After a busy
summer and autumn, we are now
into our winter season of shows.
Always a favourite, the pantomime
this year is ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and
will be full of laughter, fun and
song, a wonderful family outing.
Next year’s shows are already on
sale and selling well, so check our
website and book your selection
now to make sure of your seats.
From ‘Sherlock Holmes’, to ‘My
Fair Lady’, there is something for
you all.
Our fund raising activities have
been very successful this summer,
and I would like to thank all those
of you who shopped at the Co-op
in Shanklin and raised so much for
our theatre. Because of this we
have been able to replace some of
our windows and make a start on
improving the facilities back stage
for the performers. We have also
made significant investment in the
software we use in the box office.
This is an ongoing programme of
improving how we deal with
processing tickets and
streamlining our systems. I would
ask that you please bear with us in
the box office, in this time of
transition, as we upgrade and
train staff in our new procedures.
Please remember that there are no
shows at the theatre during
January 2019, but the box office is
open Monday to Friday 10am to
3pm and 10am to 1pm on
Saturdays. This is when vital
maintenance is undertaken and
the theatre spring cleaned by our
wonderful Housekeeping
department.
We have a very varied list of shows
to look forward to, so now is the
time to ask for theatre vouchers
for your Christmas present. And of
course a lovely way of thanking
friends and family is by giving
theatre vouchers.
I know it is a little early, but I am
taking this opportunity to wish
you all a very Happy Christmas
and look forward to a peaceful
New Year. Janet Wardle.

A Message from the Editor
Thank you for reading our festive
December edition of ‘Stage
Write’ magazine. I hope you find
the content interesting, useful and
informative. Further on in the
magazine, you can read details
about our very successful and well
attended 10th Anniversary
Celebration Variety Show, which
took place on the 2nd October.
I would just like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone
who was involved in making this
very special celebration a very
special evening indeed! Having
spent nearly a year involved in
creating the show with members
of the steering group, it made me
realise how blessed and lucky we
are to have such dedicated
volunteers that are so passionate
about our theatre.
May I personally thank David Kast
for his direction throughout the
process, Steve Watts for his
attention to detail and passion in
creating an excellent show
running order, rehearsals and
show timings, and Roger Coleman
for his many contributions and for
commissioning Vic’s superb
personally inscribed crystal glass
memento, and to Rob (man on a
mission) Robertson who held it all
together, created the marvellous
audio visual sequences and superb
‘goody bag’ gifts and souvenirs.
Thanks of course to everyone who
came along to the show on the
evening, and to all our loyal,
enthusiastic volunteers! Thank
you, it’s very much appreciated.
May I wish you a very happy
Christmas, and a healthy new
year. I look forward to seeing you
again very soon at Shanklin
Theatre. Best regards, Michael.
Stage Write magazine was
originally founded in
October 2010 by Ron Bird. I
would like to personally
thank Ron for his continued
help & guidance. Michael

A Letter from Cilla Morris
The most senior theatre volunteer
Cilla Morris, is our very well
respected Welfare Co-ordinator
who celebrated her 92nd birthday
back in January this year. She has
contributed and written this lovely
letter. Thank you Cilla!
In 2008 the theatre was closed
and in danger of being
demolished, so FOST was formed.
Who would want such a beautiful
building to be pulled down?
In 2010 it opened again with the
help of volunteers. You meet them
when you go in the Box Office to
buy your ticket and if you go
downstairs for a ‘quick one’ before
the show, you are served by the
cheerful bar staff.
The Foyer volunteers direct you
in. You may want to buy sweets
or drinks from the Lady in the
Kiosk. Inside, the Ushers are
waiting to show you to your seat
with a friendly greeting. Once
inside, the Draw ladies will try to
sell you a ticket.
But what about those you don’t
see or know about behind the
scenes. The Ladies in the Green
Room who do the Catering and
the Coffee and Chat mornings.
Then we have the Maintenance
men, mostly retired, who have
worked right from the start,
electrics, plumbing, woodwork,
and painting, there is nothing
they can’t do.
The Scrubbers: this band of men
and women under the guidance of
Shirley are the ones who keep the
theatre clean.
From early morning and often
evenings they keep the toilets
sparkling, the brass gleaming and
the Dressing Rooms back stage
bright and clean and ready for
the artists to arrive.
This is not the work most people
would do, even if they were paid.
Well done all volunteers, long
may we all carry on.

SPOTLIGHT ON FOST VOLUNTEER – Neil Hedges
Who are you and what role do you
play as a volunteer? I am the
Volunteer Coordinator. I am responsible
for communicating with volunteers and
also new volunteer recruitment, and
keeping up to date volunteer records
including records of volunteer training
attendance.
Why are you here? Although I was
born on the mainland, my entire family
before me were all Island born and
raised.
I can first remember coming to Shanklin
Theatre with my parents when I was around 8 years old. When I moved
to the Island in 2016 and found out about FOST saving the Theatre, I
wanted to get involved and do my bit to preserve our wonderful old
Theatre.
Why do you stay here? As well as being rewarding work, I have met
so many good people and it is good to socialise with the many and varied
people who so generously give their time to the Theatre.
Where is your Wight heaven? My home in Wroxall with some
wonderful countryside views. There is nothing like sitting on my decking
on a warm summer’s evening and watching the sun go down over the
fields.
Favourite town? Shanklin. Favourite Beach? Shanklin, having had
some very memorable holidays in Shanklin in my youth with great times
on the beach on warm summer days. Favourite beauty spot? Godshill
and I also love Osborne House.
Favourite pub/restaurant /cafe? The Pointer in Newchurch and
also the White Lion in Arreton.

Cruising with the Osmonds – By Linda Stoneham
In the first week of September
2018, Jill Gontar and I had a cruise
with the Osmond brothers, Merrill
and Jay. As you can see, we both
had T-shirts made to help promote
Shanklin Theatre and their
forthcoming show; ‘The Osmonds’
Rockin' Christmas with Merrill &
Jay’ on the 15th December.
The cruise was a very enjoyable experience - we were with a group of around one hundred other Osmond fans in which we enjoyed a lovely welcome from the brothers and their wives. Jill and I really got into the spirit of things and took part in a game show questions & answers session. We also really enjoyed a Karaoke session in which we were delighted to join Merrill in singing their 1974 hit; ‘Love Me for a Reason’, we probably weren’t very good, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves all the same. We also enjoyed the three concerts during our week; ‘The Osmonds UK Fan Cruise’ on board the P&O Cruise Ship; Azura. Linda Stoneham & Jill Gontar
The Osmonds have been performing for over 60 years, and continue to perform shows all over the world. I can recommend that the Shanklin Christmas Show will be well worth seeing – so come on everyone and buy those tickets to see their wonderful Christmas show!

The Friends attend the 2018 Leaflet Exchange Day at Isle of Wight Pearl
The Isle of Wight is open for business during the winter — that was the
message from tourism firms at an expo. Held at Isle of Wight Pearl on
Friday 2nd November, the leaflet exchange was attended by around 35
businesses keen to promote the
Island's winter tourism offer.
Representatives from Island
attractions, events and activity
companies including
representatives from the Shanklin
Hotel & Accommodation
Association (SHAA), shared their
leaflets with Island businesses and
accommodation providers, for
them to pass on to their guests.
The Isle of Wight benefits from
tourism in the summer months
and, throughout the winter months, many businesses are affected by low
trade as the Isle of Wight is deemed to be ‘closed’ for winter. ‘We want to
shout about all the businesses that are open all year round.’ Above: FOST
Chairman-Janet Wardle, Vice Chairman-Michael Beston &

Spotlight on Theatre Patron – Joe Pasquale
Joe Pasquale burst on to our TV screens 30 years ago on ITV’s New Faces. In 1999, he made his theatrical debut in Larry Shue’s ‘The Nerd’ which prompted Time Out to describe his performance as “rib-shatteringly funny” and went on to appear in the touring productions of Tom Stoppard’s ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’ in 2004; Mel Brooks’s ‘The Producers’ in 2007; ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in 2010 and ‘Doctor in the House’ with Robert Powell in 2012; Added to this, Joe was crowned King of the Jungle in ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ in 2004;
starred in ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’ and has appeared on six ‘Royal Variety Performances’ and become a mainstay of the British Pantomime season with sold out performances each and every Christmas! Since winning ‘I’m A Celebrity’, time has not stood still for Joe Pasquale, one of the hardest working and top-selling live comedians in British comedy today. Joe followed his ‘I’m A Celebrity’ win by hosting his own ITV special ‘An Audience with Joe Pasquale’, which enjoyed ratings in excess of nine million viewers! Joe also went on to host the long-running television series ‘The Price Is Right’ for ITV and at various times guest hosted the ‘Paul O’Grady Show’ for Channel 4. Over the years Joe has released many videos and DVDs from his live tours including the 1996 £1,000,000 seller ‘Live and Squeaky’ which earned him a Platinum Retail Performance award from The British Video Association – a feat which was repeated in 2005 with ‘Does He Really Talk Like That?’ The Live Show. Having recently qualified as a pilot and taken up boxing and running, Joe
has continued to enhance his ‘action man’ credentials by competing in a
celebrity edition of ‘Total Wipeout’ against the likes of Fatima Whitbread
and Sally Gunnell; attempted to smash the ‘most amount of martial arts

throws in a minute on ‘Guinness World Records Smashed’; spent time in a Costa Rican prison for Virgin One’s ‘The Prisoner X’ documentary season and was shipped off to the jungles of Guyana for the Discovery Channel’s ‘Alone in the Wild’ series, where he survived alone with a camera, in the depths of the rainforest for 5 days. In 2013 Joe took part in ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice’, making it through to the 6th round and continued his packed schedule with his starring role playing King Arthur in the West End production of ‘Spamalot’. This was then followed by a summer stand-up tour, before he then took on the role of Sherlock Holmes in the touring production ‘Ha Ha Holmes – The Hound of the Baskervilles’ in the autumn. And then finished up the year in December by starring in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ at the Wolverhampton Grand. 2014 has seen Joe return again to the role of King Arthur in the West End, as well as taking part in the ITV ‘Live Dancing on Ice Tour’. 2015 kicked off with Joe returning to the role of King Arthur in the touring production of ‘Spamalot’ in the Spring and a UK stand-up tour in the Summer, followed by the Christmas pantomime ‘Aladdin’ at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton. Other pantomime appearances during 2016-17 included the Orchard Theatre, Dartford in ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, 2017-18 at the Bristol Hippodrome in ‘Aladdin’ as Wishee Washee. Joe’s 30th anniversary tour: ‘A Few of His Favourite Things’ was performed across the UK this year and ended in October. We were blessed and delighted to have Joe perform for us to a full and sold out theatre on the 29th August. After the show, Joe was delighted to have his picture taken with FOST member and avid Pasquale fans, Jan Jones and her son Charlie. Jan went on to say; ‘Thank you so much to all the wonderful staff
that help out with every show at the theatre!’ Charlie was so
inspired after Joe’s show that he decided to become a FOST member and

Shanklin Theatre 10th Anniversary Celebrations
On the 2nd October 2018, Shanklin Theatre celebrated its 10th Anniversary of saving the theatre from closure and possible demolition. This milestone celebration marked a decade since a small band of dedicated volunteers saved Shanklin Theatre from closure. In the last ten years the theatre has grown exponentially, and is now fully recognised as a major venue on the UK touring circuit. The theatre also supports many local dance, drama and music groups from across the Isle of
Wight. This includes the Island Savoyards, First Act, the Pepperpot Players, Spotlight IOW and the Footsteps Dance Studio; all were proudly invited to perform at this special and unique non-profit show.
Footsteps Dance Studio. The performances on the evening ranged from, ‘A Ruff Guide to Macbeth’ humorously performed by First Act, ‘Putting on the Glitz’ from the superb Footsteps Dance Studio, and the Island Savoyards treating us to some great ‘Favourite Musical Moments’.
First Act.
The Pepperpot Players delighted the audience with a hilarious rendition during their performance entitled ‘If I was not Upon the Stage’ (balls to you Sir!).
17 | P a g e
The Pepperpot Players. The penultimate performance of the evening came from Spotlight IOW, entitled ‘Songs from the Shows’, this included a spine chilling and exceptional vocal performance adaptation of the song ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ from the musical originally written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe. All groups performed magnificently and with eloquence to a full and sold out house.
Spotlight IOW.
The evening’s entertainment also included a marvellous interspersed audio / visual presentation exploring the theatre’s history from its construction in 1878. This included key dates, such as the change from Institute to Town Hall in 1913, the Second World War 1945, the boom years from 1950, the threat of closure and revival leading up to the present day. Sadly, due to illness, the theatre’s director and chairman, Mr Vic Farrow was unable to attend on the night. Shanklin Theatre MD, Mr David Kast kindly addressed the audience in Vic’s absence, and was presented with a personally inscribed crystal glass memento from Major General Sir Martin White on Vic’s behalf as outgoing managing director. The Lord Lt said: "Well done to all of you for your success. In order to keep a ship running, you need dedication — and that's Vic Farrow." The inscribed memento was a token gesture of appreciation recognising Vic’s incredible work with Shanklin Theatre over the last ten years. The inscription reads: ‘Presented to Vic Farrow on 2nd October 2018 in recognition of his unstinting contribution to Shanklin Theatre’. We wish Vic all the very best for a speedy recovery.
18 | P a g e
The audience was also gifted with various messages of support and congratulations from past performing artists that have donned the theatre’s stage, these included; Jimmy Osmond, Danny Baker, Jimmy Jemain, Joe Pasquale and John Suchet. Theatre Patron Raymond Allen delighted us with hilarious outtakes of his attempt to give a sincere message of appreciation, only to be distracted by a boxing glove puppet under the control of a certain Mr Pasquale! Following on from that, the High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight; Gioia Minghella-Giddens graced our stage and gave a delightful and inspirational speech of her life and for the future of Shanklin Theatre. She said: "My own family has a strong association here. My much missed mama was a patron, my singing sister sang here and this stage was the location for Anthony's earliest theatrical experiences.”
"It seems to me that those experiences are what inspired Anthony's love of performing arts and his successful career — it can be traced back to here." Mrs Minghella spoke of how the theatre changes the lives of the audiences, who find magic, and the performers, who find extraordinary fulfilment. "I believe this wonderful historic space so brilliantly transformed by the hard work of those who saved it will bring much joy for years to come."
Gioia Minghella-Giddens. The Grand Finale culminated in a superb Light & Sound presentation showcasing the theatre’s premium sound PA system and Hi-Tech lighting rigs, which are now recognised as one of the best systems installed to a theatre of this size around the UK.
19 | P a g e
The ‘Tinsel Bomb’ at the very end of the show also surprised and delighted us all! As a small token gesture of appreciation to all that attended on the night, a 10th Anniversary Celebration ‘Goody Bag’ was issued to our audience. This comprised of personalised items such as leather coaster, key fob and bookmark, an engraved pen, postcard, stick of Shanklin Theatre rock and celebration programme.
Below; The Island Savoyards.
Thank you to everyone who attended the special 10th Anniversary
Celebration Show. This memorable event marks a very significant
milestone for Shanklin Theatre. Our grateful thanks also go to these groups

Bucket Collection Report
August - £2284.33 - 16
shows
September - £1766.54 - 15
shows
October - £1091.01 - 15
shows
This summer had a great selection of shows, including the opera Carmen
and the music of Debussy for classical lovers.
The fabulous Jane McDonald wowed a full house on her first visit to
Shanklin Theatre and raised £226 for the bucket fund. Also, international
singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading performed new music written for her
2018 solo tour, along with her classics from the past, and collected over
£200 for the buckets.
Something for football fans: Three Arsenal Legends in Conversation
entertained with stories from the “Beautiful Game”.
Return visits from Jimmy Osmond, Joe Pasquale, Ross Noble and Andy
Fairweather Low among other artistes kept our volunteers busy throughout
the summer.
Spotlight’s sell-out show Beyond the West End went to Wednesdays and
Thursdays each week during September, producing more than £1250 for
that month alone.
With the festive season on the way it’s time for our red Christmas jumpers
and hats, to keep us all warm while we collect your bucket donations,
especially during this year’s Spotlight pantomime - Sleeping Beauty.
Season’s greetings to everyone!
Alana Bird.
