Newsletter No.09 - 20 March 2013 Greetings Friends, The election of a new Pope has certainly been headline news during the past week. On the introduction of Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, many questions were raised. Who is this man? What does he stand for? Will he make a difference? It soon became clear that no other Pope had ever before taken the name of the great saint of the poor, Francis of Assisi; he was the first South American and Jesuit to be elected as Pope. However one of the most highlighted traits of this man has been his example of humility… a humble intellectual committed to social justice and championing of the poor; he had moved out of his archiepiscopal palace and into a simple apartment. He gave up his chauffeur-driven car and takes the bus to work. He cooks his own meals. One media release made the comment. ‘But it was when he stepped out on to the balcony that the true weight of the change became evident to the world. There was none of the double-handed boxer's salute with which his predecessor had celebrated his triumph. Instead, in plain white, wearing the simplest of crosses, he gave a single wave to St Peter's Square and then stood and just looked. He was the Bishop of Rome presenting himself to the people of Rome’. As we approach Palm Sunday and Holy Week we are reminded again from the life of our Saviour the ultimate example of true humility. In Phil 2:7-8 we read ‘But rather He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! ‘See the Master taking a towel and washing his disciples' feet! See him as the Servant of servants! Was He not on earth always stripping off first one robe of honour and then another, till, naked, He was fastened to the cross, and there did He not empty out His inmost self, pouring out His life-blood, giving up for all of us, till they laid Him penniless in a borrowed grave? How low was our dear Redeemer brought!’ (Charles Spurgeon) Zechariah 9:9 ‘Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious yet He is humble, riding on a donkey riding on a donkey’s colt’. As you celebrate Palm Sunday and as you enter into Holy Week take time to again contemplate on the events of this week. Pray that His love and humility will be marks of your life and service. Greetings Friends,

The election of a new Pope has certainly been headline news during the past week.

Blessings,

“And today I’m proud to announce a new whole-of-government strategy to reinforce ethical behaviour in procurement so that no firm providing goods or services to the Commonwealth is tainted by slavery or people-trafficking anywhere in the supply chain.” – Julia Gillard, International Women's Day

Along with this momentous announcement the Slavery, Slavery-like Conditions and People Trafficking Act was passed and signed into law.

For many Australians who have been raising awareness and campaigning against human trafficking, this is an enormous reason to celebrate. And leading up to Easter, what better way to celebrate than with Fairtrade chocolate that comes from slave free cocoa?

Many stores and supermarkets still don’t stock the Fairtrade Easter eggs that are available, and many that do only have a limited selection. You can join many others in asking your local store to step up and support the campaign for Fairtrade, or thank them if they already stock Fairtrade Easter eggs.

Stop The Traffik has provided an Easter Action pack of resources including a letter you can use to send to your local store. You can also join the campaign for Kraft-Mondelez to create a timeline of when and how they are going to certify their cocoa, starting with Toblerone.

If you would like to receive the Easter Action Pack or any campaign postcards, they are available through the Social Justice team. Any enquiries please forward to [email protected]
