The third Varese Conference on Infections in Organ Transplantation provides the state of the art on the prevention and management of infections in patients undergoing solid organ transplantation in 2011. Once again, this year, outstanding international experts will be presenting reviews of the most up-to-date information as well as their opinion on their clinical applications.Since last year's meeting, we have observed a greater awareness of the problem among clinicians and new challenges have emerged. The globalization process has brought unusual pathogens at our latitude determining, on the one hand, the emergence of new pathogens such as i.e. Dengue and Chikungunya, which had never been reported before in the Western hemisphere and, on the other hand, the necessity to also face the issue of intercultural communication with the aim of improving foreign patients' outcome. Awareness of the challenges of allograft-associated disease transmission has increased, and International authorities from the CDC and the WHO will be addressing the current strategies for prevention, treatment and reporting of donor-associated infections.Current prevention and treatment strategies for CMV and EBV will be presented together with the most recent data on HHV-6, HHV-8 and polyomaviruses.Performing solid organ transplantation in HIV-infected individuals is now a reality in many centers throughout the world with improving patient and graft survival, which will be summarized by an international panel of speakers.Historical milestones have been achieved in chronic hepatitis B and steps forward were made in chronic hepatitis C. How to apply these improvements to the solid organ transplant population will be extensively discussed during the meeting. Finally, the spread of multidrug resistant pathogens and the best use of the new antibacterial and antifungal agents will be the central topic of dedicated sessions.

rdThe aim of this 3 Congress is to provide clinicians with the state of the art and its clinical applications to optimise the management of patients undergoing solid organ transplantation. Indeed, our ultimate goal is to provide optimal therapy and the best chance of cure to as many patients as possible, worldwide.

I wish you a most pleasant stay in Varese and a very fruitful meeting.

Best wishes,Dear colleagues,

Paolo Grossi
