A VIEW FROM THE GREAT LAWN

On Easter Sunday, Mary, Star of the Sea Church and Schools sponsored an Easter Egg Hunt on the great

lawn on the school campus. The Knights of Columbus Brother Joseph Dutton Council 7156, Parishioner

Melissa Teves and student volunteers teamed up to stuff and hide over 3500 plastic eggs, serve coffee and

doughnuts and give out prizes. Nearly 200 keiki participated in the event and Fr. Frankie de los Reyes and

Fr. Pat Labasano (the Council Chaplain) kicked off the hunt

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

GRATITUDE

We come to celebrate the Eucharist, a word that means

“thanksgiving,” so that we may reflect on this great gift of

God’s merciful love and give Him thanks and praise. How

often do we hear people say, “I don’t get anything out of the

Mass.” This may mean we need to be more careful about

how we celebrate the liturgy, but it may also mean that we

are expecting to get something rather than give to God the

thanks and praise it is right and just to give Him.

Our Liturgical Arts & Environment

Ministry, headed by Brother Buddy

Yanzon, once again, outdid themselves

in another awe-inspiring altar décor fit

only for the “King of Glory.”

Our heartfelt “thanks” to our ever

hardworking team of artistes:

Left to Right: Dennis Izumi, Yvonne

Izumi, Nathan Nakanishi, Diane Hee

Nakanishi, Anne Hung

Back row: John Chong

The goal of the Worship Environment

Ministry is to create a setting conducive

to a meaningful worship. We decorate

the church environment for ceremony

and season. According to Art and Envi-

ronment in the Church, this ministry is

to oversee all aspects of ceremony. This

includes altar linens, vestments, vessels,

candles, etc., keeping things clean, in

working order, and ready for use; also to

be able to supply anything that may be

needed. Great job, MSOS team!!

The Peter in All of Us

The story of the resurrected Jesus on the shore in

today’s Gospel highlights the personality of the fer-

vent, impassioned Peter. Peter, impulsive, the first to

approach the Lord; Peter the first to enter the

gravesite and behold the cloth wrappings that had

embraced our Lord.

We ask ourselves, who is this apostle Peter, once

informed of the Gospel presence, who rushes to

approach the mystery? It is that part of me that, at

the urging of another, will rise to greet the Lord, as

Peter did also at the beginning of the Gospel when his

brother Andrew had informed him of Jesus’ presence.

Peter is that part of you or me that would readily

shake off the business of this world, momentarily he is

so involved in the task at hand that his vision is

clouded. At times, the clamminess of the labor and

the stodginess of our companions dulls our ability to

recognize or respond to our Lord. Then we ask, who

is this disciple, whose keen vision is ever ready to

perceive and announce the Lord?

It is my intuition and better instinct. Even after the

routine of my Christian life may have numbed me,

this beloved disciple is sensitive and alert to the

Gospel, and is not timid to confess an eternal longing

to meet the Master.

“Lord, thank you for the gift of boldness. Help me to

remain confident in you today.”

St. Peter, Pray for Us!

SCHOOL NEWS

MSOS Supports

American Heart Association

Mary, Star of the Sea School traditionally concludes its third quarter with an American Heart Association

fundraising event called Jump Rope for Heart. This year, was an extra special year. Our Athletic Director Lyman

Lacro received a recognition award from the AHA for his many years of service and leadership with this event.

Congratulations Mr. Lacro! And, we were blessed to have guest speaker, Mr. Douglas Russell who inspired the

students and faculty with his personal connection to the American Heart Association. Mr. Russell's 3-week old

grandson received a heart transplant in 1995. Mr. Russell emphasized to the students that their fundraising efforts

have direct profound effects on lives across America. As Mr. Russell turns 100 years old this year, his grandson

with the donated heart will be celebrating his 24th birthday! Mahalo to all of our families and supporters for

contributing to such an important cause that has touched the lives of so many!

Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center Celebrates Earth Day!

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which worldwide events are

held to bring global awareness and stewardship of our precious environment. Earth

Day was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day

Network and celebrated in more than 193 countries around the world. In celebration

of Earth Day, ELC students participated in many activities that brought awareness to

the importance of caring for our planet earth. ELC students participated in planting

projects and many other activities. Kindergarteners (shown below) are planting red

lettuce and black cherry tomatoes.
