Jesus had power to set us free from the two realities which we humans most fear - suffering and death. Today again the Gospel insists on the milling crowds. They sought him out and pressed closely round him, each eager to get close enough to secure some blessing from this astonishing Teacher and Healer. A synagogue official desperate for his daughter’s welfare and a woman suffering a hemorrhage succeed in reaching the Lord. These two represent each one of us while the crowds represent the whole of poor, strug- gling, helpless humanity. Jairus is in an awful predicament. He is braver than the woman and approaches Jesus directly. His daughter is about to die. Aren’t we all? Both suffering and death entered the world because mankind, through the temptation of the devil, turned away from God and this turning away had dire consequences, one of the worst of which was that we refuse to take responsibility for our sin. So we blame everyone except ourselves. We accuse God of failing us because he doesn't just simply take it all away, make it all better, fix it, which, of course, is precisely what he has done and in a way which wonderfully satisfies both mercy and jus- tice. Jesus took upon himself the very scourge we our- selves brought into the world through Original Sin. He took upon himself suffering and death and made them a path to eternal life for those who follow his steps. In other words, the very suffering and death which led to our ultimate destruction now leads to eternal life - but we have to believe! This is what is so singular about Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage – they both really believe. In fact, the power of their faith stands in stark contrast to their powerlessness over the circumstances of their lives. It is this faith which touches Jesus and moves him to grant their wishes. The miracles of Jesus never failed to astonish the crowds and made them even more eager to be near him. For us, who read of these miracles our faith in the Lord grows too. For us they are signs, signs of what is awaiting our faith when we reach our heavenly home- land. His earthly miracles were meant precisely to teach us to believe that the same wonders would one day, unfailingly, be worked for us. Jesus invites us to a faith which transcends pre- sent suffering and future death. He invites us to the peace and joy of total faith in a future which is in his loving hands. No matter what we may suffer, even death, he invites us, not to fear, but to rejoice and trust in him. - Father Thomas Rosica, CSB

Peter’s Pence Collection Sunday, July 1st 2018

Pope Benedict XVI once shared that “it is necessary above all that every person be motivated by the au-thentic spirit of peace, to be implored ever anew in prayer and to be lived in daily relations in every envi-ronment.” Peter’s Pence collection gives us the chance to unite in solidarity with the Holy Father and the faithful worldwide. This weekend our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Fa-ther to carry out emergency assistance and aid to the most disadvantaged around the world. The proceeds will benefit: victims of war, oppression and natural dis-asters. Please be generous in the collection and help cast the peace of Christ upon the world. Envelopes can be found at the entrances of the Church.

First Friday– July 6th is First Friday and we will have mass at 8 am. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place after the 8:00 am mass in the church. Benediction will take place at 3:00 pm. Let us be generous with our time in spending time in ado-ration and in contemplation of our Lord. If you would like to spend one hour before the Blessed Sacrament, please call Marian Goyette at (310) 322-7367.

Happy Fourth of July!

News from the Religious Education Office

Did you know that there are very, very few employment opportunities today if you only have a second grade education? Now think about your child’s religious future if they only have a second grade education! Many parents think that once their child has received First Holy Communion Reli-gious Education is no longer needed. That idea is false. Children need to continue with their religious education every year, just like they take Math and Eng-lish every year in school. Registration forms are avail-able in the back of the church and in the Parish Offices. Registration through July 15th is only $75.00 per year.

Teen Confirmation

Our Confirmation Program is a two year program that assists in the development of teenag-ers into mature, responsible, Catholic adults, ready to live their faith in the world. Candidates need to be regis-tered and have attended a Religious Education classes within the last year, pass a Catholic Faith assessment or take a Basic Faith Workshop. Please visit our webpage at: stanthonyesconfirmation.shutterfly.com

or call the Parish Center for more information.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you Know?

Teach children to be safe in the water this summer Drowning is the second leading cause of death for people ages 5-24. Families need to talk to their children about safe habits to use whenever they go to the pool or beach. Children should never go in the water if they don’t know how to swim, and should never swim alone or without a life-guard present. For parents, avoiding distractions is critical when supervising swimming children. For more tips, visit us at https://www.nsc.org/home-safety/tools-resources/seasonal-safety/drowning.

- Padre Rogelio Salazar
