This is Antwerp is

a handy guide for

travellers who want to

discover the city from

a local point of view.

Our magazine, web-

site, smartphone app

and Facebook page

are packed with use-

ful tips from locals on

what to do and where

what you think!

A lot of thought and

hard work went

into this sixth issue.

With loads of new tips

and inspiring city se-

crets, we continue to

bring you a fresh take

on what’s brewing in

Antwerp. We asked

ourselves the obvi-

ous question: What

is This is Antwerp all

about? The conclusion

was simple. It’s about

giving you as much

useful information as

possible. So we went

out and asked a whole

string of locals where

they like to hang out,

what’s worth seeing

and what’s so nice

about Antwerp.

Be sure to check

out our article

on popular winter

hotspots for tips from

locals on cozy refuges

days. You’ll also find

some great advice on

where to get the best

gifts and souvenirs.

And Dorien fills you in

on the city’s best-kept

shopping secrets. In-

spired by the concept

of the Point It Out

guides, we’ve devel-

oped our own visual

guide to Antwerp. Us-

ing loads of pictures,

we created an easy

and fun way to plan

what to do and where

to go. If you’re look-

ing for more practical

tips, like where to find

free WiFi or a place to

sleep, you’ll surely find

the last page of this

magazine helpful.

Special thanks goes

out to Studio Fluit,

The most wonderful time of the year is coming up again. And finding the perfect gift for our loved ones isn’t always as easy as Disney movies make it out to be. Let’s be honest, inspiration does run dry sometimes…That’s why we’ve put together a list with gifts that are as useful as they are affectionate. They’re all made by locals or have an inevi-table link to the city we all love (to visit). A nice extra: they tran-scend Christmas so you can keep the list and re-use it for Valen-tine’s Day, a birthday or any other random occasion to spread some love. And yes, you can keep them for yourself as well.

THE LEGEND OF BRABO

A long time ago, when Ant-

werp was just a small settle-

ment in the Roman Empire,

there was a giant called An-

tigoon, who built a large cas-

tle along the River Scheldt.

He demanded a toll from ev-

ery passing ship and would

cut off the hands of sailors

who were unable or unwill-

ing to hand over half of their

cargo. He then threw their

hands in the river.

One day, a Roman soldier

called Brabo sailed past

the giant’s castle. He didn’t

want to pay the toll and chal-

lenged Antigoon to a duel.

Against all odds, Brabo de-

feated the giant, cut off his

hand and head, and threw

them into the river. And

that’s how Antwerp got its

name: in Dutch you would

translate ‘throwing a hand’

as ‘hand werpen’, and that

became ‘Antwerpen’.

TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE CO-

VER YOU MADE FOR THIS MAGAZINE.

Naomi: “We thought it would be cool to do something different, rather than repeating clichés. I think the legend of Brabo is really interesting. For those who don’t know the story (see above), it’s a funny one. And, like most legends, it doesn’t really add up. Actually, one of my favourite things used to be to sit on the giant hand on the Meir.” WHAT THINGS COME TO MIND

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT

ANTWERP?

Eva: “The first thing, I guess, would be the cathedral(118). And, of course, the city skyline as seen from Linkeroever (left bank). I like how the city is not too big, but also not too small, it’s just right. I lived in Ghent for a while and I found it a bit too small and too concentrated.”Naomi: “Yeah, and I lived in Berlin, which to me was the opposite: a bit too big. I really like living in Antwerp: it’s a beautiful place and there’s a lot to do.”

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU DURING

THE WINTERTIME?

Eva: “We’ll be in a cosy coffee bar, like this one, drinking hot coco.”Naomi: (laughs) “Yeah, me too! I also like my hot coco with whipped cream.”Eva: “I always like going to the movies at UGC (115). I have a year pass there and I try to go about three times a month. I also enjoy going to Cinema Zuid (114), but it’s been a while now. It really de-pends on the films they are showing.”

Naomi: “I did send out some emails in the beginning, but that doesn’t re-ally work. We, for ourselves, don’t get around to answering even half of our emails. I guess the same goes for po-tential clients. Promoting Studio Fluit through email simply isn’t going to work. Anyhow, most assignments we get, come from people who contact us themselves.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE

OF ASSIGNMENT?

Eva: “The ones for which we get total artistic freedom. Sometimes you just have to follow very strict directions and you can’t really put anything of your-self into a job. That can become a drag. It can make you feel bad, because you get the impression people don’t want your work. They just want you to do something because you have the skills. They could’ve asked anyone…”Naomi: “INTEGRATED certainly was a lot of fun. Eva even did the voices for the animation video. But, indeed, some-times you get one of those assignments, where you just have to remake an exist-ing image, and it feels horrible because you are copying someone else’s work.”

HOW IMPORTANT IS NETWORKING

AND MAKING THINGS HAPPEN FOR

YOURSELF?

Eva: “Most of our assignments just come to us. But we should definitely work on selling ourselves a bit more. We’re just not that good at it. Luckily we’ve had some pretty big assignments, that really stand out. Like the USE IT map or the Kunstbende. People see our work on the streets. And that’s how word gets out about your work, instead of us contacting prospects directly.”

utes were a showcase of our work and ourselves, just dancing.”Eva: “When we were asked to talk at INTE-GRATED, I got very nervous. I couldn’t handle the idea of talk-ing in front of a thou-sand people. So we decided to do a perfor-mance, dressed up, so that nobody would rec-ognize us. In the end, I was glad we did it. We got some great feed-back.”Naomi: “It was a com-pletely different perfor-mance than anything else at the festival. Eighty per cent of the audience were students. So instead of talking about our portfolios, we chose to address the school situation. We showed them how sometimes it just takes some time to get there. At one point we were in the oth-er camp! Sometimes, when you’re still in school, or when you’ve just graduat-ed, things can be quite overwhelming. Your fellow students might be doing better than you. But it all worked out in the end for us. It just takes some time…”

Dorien Waterschoot: UPCOMING STYLISTBy Helen Van den Poel

For this edition of This Is Antwerp I met up with Dorien Waterschoot (23). Dorien is an upcoming stylist who has lived in Antwerp for five years. It all started when she got a job at Forever 21 (45) as a stylist and discovered she was actu-ally really good at it. She met photog-rapher Frédéric Bastin who took her on a trip to Barcelona to work on a shoot and it wasn’t long before big clients like Hair by Van Loenhout (122) and REDKEN asked her to style their collections. She even styled a billboard campaign for

Marlboro Cigarettes with photographer Guillaume Kayancan. It’s hard to de-scribe her style in one word: she loves to work with ethnic elements, prints and lots of colour. But what we like most about her work is that she often works with young designers and students from the Fashion Department: Felix Boehm, Lise Eerens, Minju Kim, Clara Jungman Malmquist, Virginia Burlina, Raffaela Graspointer and Yens Cuyvers are just a few of her favourites.

Studio Fluit will be showcasing its ‘American Dreamz’ expo at Kornél, from December 13 until February 16, 2014. You can visit the expo during the open-ing hours of the bar.Want to see more from Studio Fluit? Dorien explained:”This is my favourite pair of pants from the Kenzo collection and I really love prints so that’s why I picked out the sweater. The hat adds a pop of colour to the outfit while the handbag really ties it all together. Keep the shoes simple and you’re good to go!”.

can be a bit overwhelming. They have a huge collection of clothes from many different designers like Dries Van Noten (Dorien’s favourite), Maison Martin Mar-giela and Comme Des Garçons from pre-vious collections so prices are reduced. The clothes (for both men and women) are sorted by designer, so it’s easy to find a particular item!

This small store actually only sells men’s clothes, but Dorien thinks it’s a cool ad-dress for women too because the col-lection is rather unisex. Don’t be scared to wear a men’s t-shirt or sweater, over-sized fits can look really cool on a girl. But what‘s most impressive is the large selection of Nike sneakers and beanies. And although it’s a men’s store they also sell shoes in smaller sizes!

Isabel Marant, Kenzo, Marni: these are just a few of the designer brands you’ll find in this high-end store. But besides just being a store it’s also a gallery and a res-taurant. And even though Graanmarkt 13 is quite ex-pensive it’s still worth a visit: they also sell fashion acces-sories, toys for children and interior goodies by design label HAY that are pretty af-fordable. Designers good-ies and accessories, art and

food; plenty of reasons to take a good look around.

Graanmarkt 13 (46), 2000 Antwerp. Closed every Sunday, restaurant also closed on Mondays. Visit www.graan-markt13.be for the menu (29 euro - 39 euro).

I have to warn you: they are not cheap but Dorien explained: “These aren’t the stores I go to on a regular basis but if I had a lot of money I definitely would!”. Although she often shops at Zara and H&M (like most of us) she didn’t want to make a list of stores that you and I already know. Instead she really wants to show us what Antwerp has to offer. So here is a selection (and some tips) es-pecially for you!

POP-UP ANTWERPAntwerp has a rich pop-up culture: stores, restaurants and, of course, parties. In fact, there are prob-ably more pop-up par-ties than there are clubs in Antwerp. But it’s not always easy to keep track of what’s happening. Rea-son enough then for This is Antwerp to lend a help-ing hand. We went out and talked to some interesting people about their party concepts. Time to get to know them, and – more importantly – to know who to follow.

GIGS Papaya Music WHAT? Papaya Music is a fairly new concert orga-nization, with only one show under its belt so far. They set up shows featuring both international and local talent. Although they have a slight pref-erence for alternative and indie music, they don’t want to pin themselves to a particular genre.

FOR WHOM? Lovers of less-than-obvious music.

WHEN AND WHERE? Based in Antwerp, Papaya works in close cooperation with TRIX (98). Keep an eye on their Facebook page to know when something is happening.

DREAM LINE-UP? “Have you heard of the ‘Le Guess Who?’ festival in Utrecht (the Netherlands)? Well, I guess that might come pretty close to being it…”

A LITTLE ANECDOTE? “Finding a new name for an event is always tricky. We came up with names like ‘Kiwi‘, ‘KimJungUn‘ and ‘Ambras‘, but eventually we all thought ‘Papaya’ sounded the best.”

NOORDWHAT? A nomadic par-ty in the underbelly of Antwerp, exclusively set in venues that have their own story to tell.

WHEN AND WHERE? Fairly un-predictable, but mostly in venues in Borgerhout or the north of Antwerp. This year you can en-joy NOORD NYE MELT-DOWN at Bar Venetië (79). Keep track by following NOORD on Facebook.

MEMORIES? “We cherish the fondest memories of our first parties. They were set, about five years ago,

at café Strange (Dambruggestraat), the oldest gay bar in town. Think of a cheesy, ‘80s atmo-sphere, some nudity, and badly drafted beers from Armand, the bar owner who is now some-where in his seventies, and who loved the sud-denly much younger crowd in his bar. He like! We like Armand!”

ON THE LINE: WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/BERTOLIUS OR AT HTTP://NOORD-FEESJES.TUMBLR.COM

Hush HushWHAT? A party at which the music exceeds the hype, where classics and cutting-edge songs are easily interwoven, where everybody is welcome, where the best DJs are on the bill and where the resident DJs are equally important as the head-liners.

FOR WHOM? Everyone, though strictly 18+.

WHEN AND WHERE? Follow them on Facebook to know where to go. They’ve held editions at the Pekfab-riek (92), DE Studio (85), Roxy (94) and Magiq Spie-geltent.

DREAM LINE-UP? “As long as our residents Hush Hef-ner, The Whatevers or TLP bring their blend of old school funk, disco, classics, trap, pop, future bass and ‘90s r&b, it doesn’t matter who else is play-ing!”

OFF THE RECORD? “There are no flyers, no posters, no spam. We keep it Hush Hush, on the down low and on the q.t.. And if you didn’t know, you know now.”

ON THE LINE: WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/HUSH.HUSH.BELGIUM OR HTTP://WWW.HUSH-HUSH.BE

ClitClapWHAT? ClitClap is like a house party but one where they only play trap music. The vibe is positive and sweaty.

WHEN AND WHERE? About every two months they organize a party them-selves, but sometimes they get invited to host at different parties. Al-though they’re constantly on the lookout for new locations, they always bring the typical ClitClap settings: two flags (with logo), plants (really!), a banner and a coloured tube light.

DREAM LINE-UP? “Carnage, Hucci, Yellow Claw, Kid Kamillion, gLAdiator and GTA.”

HOW DID THEY GET STARTED? “ClitClap started out as an out-of-control birthday party. We tried to orga-nize a small party in the back room of café Mul-tatuli, which has a capacity of about one hundred people. Before we knew it, our party went viral on Facebook and a whole bunch of party people showed up. Multatuli (82) was packed and sweaty. And there were about two hundred more people outside waiting to get in. The cops showed up four times and around 4 am the bar ran out of drinks. So we thought: Damn, people really like this music and we are really having a good time, so why not continue organizing these events?”

LOCAL PARTIESKannibaalWHAT? Kannibaal parties have no rules; they are ir-regular and disordered. One party might be well organized and set in a certain theme, but the next one could just as easily be the result of a last-min-ute decision. The organizers used to be a four-man team, but have now downsized to two and a half men.

FOR WHOM? Passers-by

WHEN AND WHERE? On an irregular basis, at different locations, but always within biking distance of the Turnhoutsebaan, the centre of all things good and beautiful

DREAM LINE-UP? “Support by Frank Ocean ft. Mykki Blanco, an intermezzo by Silver Apples ft. Damo Suzuki, while Laurie Anderson is frozen into a block of ice, and the DJ spins records brought by the audience as the main act. Pierre Elitair would close the party with some Puerto Rican-dubbed love songs.”

THEY DID WHAT? “We print all our flyers at the office because we have no money whatsoever.”

Salton SeizureWHAT? Salton Seizure is a young Antwerp-based music organization, always on the lookout for promising local DJs and interesting bands, both national and international. A night typically in-cludes a set by a local band, one international band and three DJs, although not necessarily in that order.

FOR WHOM? Everyone who loves mu-sic and is looking for new and ex-citing finds.

WHEN AND WHERE? Although the first edition took place at Kavka (89), the upcoming shows will held be at TRIX (98). Be sure to check out their Facebook page if you want to know what’s going on.

DREAM LINE-UP? “Well, if we got to pick from international bands, Future Islands, Wolf Parade, Death Grips, Ty Segall and Wolf Alice would be amazing. The ideal Belgian line-up would defi-nitely include BRNS and MEAN.”

HOW DO WE KNOW IT’S A SALTON SEIZURE? “We always bring our shiny curtains. We hang them on the DJ booth and on the stage. We got the idea from Spaceland (now The Satellite) in LA, where the whole room is draped with silver and blue metallic curtains. It creates an inviting atmosphere and adds a bit of life to the otherwise bare and cold venues.”

Leave Us At DawnWHAT? Leave Us At Dawn is a platform for artists of all genres, which started out about a year and a half ago. They always aim for a great party, with lots of dancing, drinking and talking. They are constantly looking for new talent and photogra-phers who want to collaborate. Quite often, the organizers offer a spot on the bill to less obvious genres, like jazz, classical music or dance. And they aren’t shy to ask the audience to dress up.

FOR WHOM? Everyone

WHEN AND WHERE? There’s about six editions of Leave Us At Dawn per year, all held at DE Studio (85)

(Mechelseplein).

DREAM LINE-UP? “An AMOR-edition with Björk, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto and Sidi Larbi Cherka-oui. Visuals by Lars Von Trier, while the staff would be chosen and dressed by La Fille d’O, with Tom Waits acting as host.”

WHERE DOES THE NAME COME FROM? “It’s a reference to the song ‘Leave Us At Dawn’. It’s about the loneliness that can suddenly envelop you after a magical and extravagant night. The night is short, full of opportunities and everybody is looking for some-thing. Focusing on the morning adds value to the night.”

Relax? I relax while staring at the ‘birdy’ wallpaper made by local talent Jasmien Van Hoecke at Palanca9. Dinner? I dig the tasty dishes, but especially the funny names (like ‘Hottest chick in town’) on the menu at Lollapolooza33 (Pelgrimstraat 28).

And for dinner, I prefer De broers van Juli-enne29, because they have the most tasty veg-etarian food in Antwerp. Shopping? At The Public Image53 you’ll find affordable and original clothes, right in the heart of Antwerp. It also has an incredible inte-rior, designed by Nick Bal.

Name: Tine Van den Poel (20) Gifts? At the Klooster-straat110 you can find something for every-one’s taste. Especially the new store The Recollection62 is a good tip, so is the Markt van Morgen. Inspiring Antwerp? I have admired the artist Ephameron ever since I

I think I’m still too much of a kid to appreciate the bitter taste. But I do love a Chai Latté at Mademoi-seIle Moustache6 (Paardenmarkt, Antwerp) from time to time. Restaurant? Just recently I asked my brother to scan the Internet for a new place to eat and he came up with the best place ever: Moderato+ 34, a pasta restaurant on the Theaterplein112.

SPINLISTER

You can try Spinlister (www.spinlister.com) and see if there are any available bikes for rent. This site allows people to rent bikes from locals.

TIPS TIPS TIPSGOOD TO KNOW• Most stores are closed on a Sunday,

expect for the ones in Hoogstraat and Kloosterstraat.

• Most stores are closed on holidays like Christmas and NYE (both on Wednes-days)

• You often have to pay a fee to use the toilet

• A beer or as we say ‘pintje’ will set you back approximately €2 (so don’t get ripped off)

• Most museums are closed on Monday• Most markets take place on Friday,

Saturday or Sunday (Vrijdagmarkt, Exotic Market, Bird Market,…)

• We only have 3 cinemas (maybe 4 again soon) in our city center: UGC (approximately 20 screens), Cinema Zuid (quality programming, re-runs)and Cinema Klappei (a small local theater, re-runs)

• Don’t overpay for fries: there are a lot of great frit shops (‘frituur’). Keep it around €2.5 for a big one (without sauce)

• We have a pop up culture so check our (free and offline) app to see where the party is at

• If you get into trouble (which you won’t) and you need help from the police, medical emergency team or the fire bri-gade, call ‘112’

HOW TO GET AROUNDBy Taxi

Sometimes it’s easier to use a taxi to get from point A to point B but here are some ground rules: 1) You can’t just waive your arm around and expect a taxi to stop. You have to call one (or use the app) or go to one of the taxi stands. 2) you can fit 4 people in a normal taxi and up to 8 in a van. It’s a lot cheaper to share a cab! 3) You have to pay extra to take a cab at night. Starting rate is €5,45 from 10pm till 6am.

Download the Antwerp-Tax app for Iphone or Android. You’ll find taxi stands at:

Arenbergstraat Bolivarplaats Dageraadplaats Franklin Rooseveltplaats Godefriduskaai (MAS) Groenplaats Kievitplein (Central Station) Leopold De Waelplaats Pelikaanstraat (Central Station) Steenplein Waalsekaai

By Public Transportation

Antwerp has an extensive network of public transportation (bus and tram). You can buy a single ticket for €2 on the bus or buy one in advance at the machines on the platform.

If you are partying the night away on Fri-day and Saturday you can always take the night buses. They leave at the Royal Mu-seum of Fine Arts Antwerp (at 00:41 am, 1:58am and 3:43am), the Groenplaats (at 00:45am, 2:02am and 3:47am) and from the Rooseveltplaats (1am, 2:15am and 4am).
