GLOBAL UCF • GLOBAL ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMY 32

HIMANSHU from India

“Within Global UCF, there are so

many different points of view,

and hearing them helps you see

the world with a new perspective.

It’s not only about what we do

but who we do it with, and

Global UCF has connected me

with great people.”

DASHA from Russia

“ Global UCF provides opportunities

for you to develop the skills to

use not only in your major, but

in your entire life. My skills, my

personality, my ideas, everything

changed. Global UCF helped me

figure out who I am and in this

process I understood — this is

what I needed.”

What do you love most about

GLOBAL UCF?

LINA from Colombia

“ I love the fact that to say you

have international friends is pretty

cool. The network of friends from

around the world is unique.

We have become really close.

Maybe someday I’ll be able to call

an old friend from India to visit?”

FERNANDO from Mexico

“ We have support in every aspect

from the entire team. We get to

know the cultures from all of the

students in the program. It’s a fun

and nice environment for studying

and everyday life. I feel like I’m at

home. I feel like it’s a family —

not a program.”

XIMENA from Venezuela

“What I love most is the people —

we end up being like a family. We

take care of each other but also

push each other to stay on track.

Orlando is used to international

visitors and everyone is very

welcoming and respectful. The

UCF campus is gorgeous! It may

feel huge and overwhelming at

first, but then it becomes familiar

and just feels like home.”

Meet the Team

SHANNON TATUM - DIRECTOR OF [email protected]

Shannon Tatum is the Director of Admissions and joined the Global UCF team in March 2015. Prior to joining the team, she served as Associate Campus Director at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical

University since 2002. She holds a B.S. in management from The Florida State University and a M.S. in management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She is a native Floridian and her

favorite pastime is biking the Florida trails!

EMILY BOMBARDI - MARKETING [email protected]

Marketing Manager Emily Bombardi joined Global UCF in March 2015. Previously, she was a sales manager at Multimedia, Inc. in Orlando. She is a 2012 graduate of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. In addition, she is IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) certified and is a member of the

Orlando Area Council on Foreign Relations. In her spare time, Emily likes to skydive on the weekends and also loves to travel — even if that means traveling alone!

DR. OLGA BEDOYA-ARTURO - ACADEMIC [email protected]

Born in Colombia, Olga completed her doctoral degree in Higher Education and Public Policy. Her research topic was focused on the impact of higher education in the economic and social integration of highly educated immigrants in the United States. Olga has vast experience in

international and STEM education. She worked at UCF for several years, both in the Office of First Year Advising and Exploration (FYAE) and in the College of Graduate Studies.

MARY-KAY HASELEY - MANAGING [email protected]

Early on in her career, Mary-Kay realized that her passion was to create and not maintain. As an executive at the Walt Disney Company, she was involved in multiple projects that required

detailed planning and implementation of one-of-a kind visions and business plans. Mary-Kay also founded her own company as an education consultant upon realizing that important resources for

parents were not readily available. Mary-Kay understands how international students feel when first experiencing life in the United States, as she has spent time in China, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco and Norway. A graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology, Mary-Kay left the

Northeast winters and embraced sunny Florida.

Upon successful completion of the GAA, you will progress into year two of your chosen degree.

GAA FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCEAs an international student, the move from high school to the higher education system in the United States can be challenging: a new language, new ways of learning and a new home. Global UCF makes that transition easier.

• Academic support in English language and curricular classes is available throughout the program. You will have all the tools you need to enter a degree program directly from secondary school (subject to entry requirements), with a TOEFL iBT 60 or equivalent.

• Small class sizes give you the advantage of instruction and support tailored to your specific needs and goals and help ensure your academic success.

• Support beyond the classroom. Starting on day one and throughout your entire program at Global UCF, we help foster your academic and professional success through community projects, cultural experiences in Florida, career planning guidance and networking opportunities.

• Learn from your peers. GO Teamers will be the first students to welcome you to campus and help you settle in, answering your questions and offering support as fellow students. As you get to know your classmates and learn from them, you become part of the Global UCF family.

• Concierge support services that are exclusively for Global UCF students are available 24/7 for inquiries large or small.

• A committed team of Global UCF advisors provides support on all issues, academic and personal, and helps you navigate the practicalities of settling in to life at UCF: airport pickup, opening a bank account and mobile phone registration.

GLOBAL ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMYGlobal UCF’s Global Achievement Academy (GAA) program offers a unique first-year experience for

international students attending the University of Central Florida. The GAA sets the framework for

20 GLOBAL UCF • GLOBAL ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMY 21

1. The University of Central Florida’s Global UCF students must read these terms and conditions carefully prior to submitting an application. In addition to these terms and conditions, as students at the University of Central Florida (UCF), all Global UCF students are bound by the rules and regulations governing UCF, as those may be amended from time to time. The most re-cent UCF rules can be found at goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu.

2. Global UCF reserves the right to amend these terms and con-ditions from time to time (the most recent terms and condi-tions can be found at globalUCF.com/terms-and-conditions). Similarly, UCF reserves the right to amend its terms and condi-tions from time to time. At all times, students will be required to comply with the then-current terms and conditions. UCF’s current terms and conditions may be found at policies.ucf.edu.

3. Application: Students may apply to Global UCF’s Global Achievement Academy (“GAA”), GAA Prep (a pre-sessional English program) or for direct admission to UCF. If you de-cide to apply to any of these three programs, be sure to use the application that is specific to the program you select. Each application contains terms and conditions governing the spe-cific program, and students acknowledge by submitting this application that they agree to the terms and conditions of the respective program.

4. Students who are conditionally accepted to Global UCF will re-ceive a conditional offer that outlines additional requirements for acceptance and deposit information. Students who are admitted to Global UCF will receive an offer letter along with invoice information with directions on completing payment.

5. Tuition, fees and accommodation payment: Following pay-ment of the deposit, students must pay the remaining out-standing balance by the following posted payment deadline for the semester in which they enroll:

Spring 2016: December 7, 2015;

Summer 2016: April 25, 2016;

Fall 2016: August 1, 2016.

Global UCF has the right to amend prices due to university actions, tax increases, governmental actions or other events beyond our control.

6. Transfer credits: Students with post-secondary college cred-its applying to Global UCF’s GAA are subject to additional requirements. Students joining the GAA must have completed less than 30 credits from an outside university and the cumu-lative post-secondary GPA must be 2.0 or higher. Coursework transferred from international, non-American institutions will need to be officially evaluated through one of the UCF-ap-proved NACES companies: World Education Services (wes.org) or Josef Silny & Associates ( jsilny.com). Students submitting international post-secondary school (university) credentials, order course-by-course evaluations. Transfer credits are artic-ulated after completion of the GAA and will apply to academic years two, three and four; under no circumstances will trans-fer credits apply to the GAA. The student acknowledges that UCF and the Global UCF make no representations and cannot guarantee that post-secondary college credits will be given.

7. Accommodations: All GAA students are required to commit to a three-term residence in a UCF residential hall and pay in full for this accommodation by the posted payment deadline (listed in section 5) for the semester in which they enroll. All Global UCF student housing commitments run three terms unless otherwise noted. Students who begin in a GAA Prep program must remain in a UCF residential hall for the dura-tion of the GAA Prep and GAA program before eligible to move off campus. The most up to date cancellation and refund policy for student accommodation can be found at housing.ucf.edu/costs/terms. Exceptions to the above stated accommodation policy must be submitted via a Global UCF Housing Waiver at the time of application for review and approval/denial of request.

8. Dining: All Global UCF students are required to commit to a three-term dining plan at UCF and pay in full for this dining plan by the posted payment deadline (listed in section 5) for the semester in which they enroll. Students needing to cancel their dining plan prior to move-in are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made after the move in date must include docu-mentation of withdrawal from the university, and students will be charged the then-current cancellation fee in addition to a prorated amount that will be retained by Global UCF for the portion of the term already used. All cancellation fees are due at the time of request.

9. Health insurance: All international students studying at UCF are required to be covered by health insurance, which meets the U.S. government’s visa requirements, state of Florida re-quirements and UCF requirements.

a. At the time of their acceptance, students are required to purchase coverage from a Global UCF-designated health plan as a condition of enrollment.

b. Prior to orientation, all students must have completed the UCF Health Services Immunization Form docu-menting proof of immunity to measles (rubeola), Ger-man measles (rubella) and mumps, and either proof

of immunization against meningitis and hepatitis B, or a signed waiver declining these two vaccines. Mandatory immunization forms may be obtained through the UCF Health Services website at hs.ucf.edu/ immunizations.html. Students must have immunization documentation to live on campus and prior to class start date.

c. The cost of health insurance is nonrefundable.

10. Airport transfers: Requests for airport transfer should be made at least two weeks in advance by visiting GlobalUCF.com/welcome. Global UCF cannot guarantee a reservation for a request made less than two weeks in advance. However, staff will make every attempt to accommodate late requests. In the event that a flight is cancelled or delayed, students must call the emergency telephone number published in the Next Steps Brochure to inform Global UCF’s staff of the new arrival date and time. Please see Section 24 for the airport transfer cancellation policy.

11. Cancellation, change, curtailment or withdrawal: Students who cancel their Global UCF course prior to arrival on UCF’s campus due to a visa denial may request a full refund of de-posit, tuition and fees. After the start of the Global UCF program, students may be eligible for a partial refund of up to 25% of tuition costs prior to the end of the fourth week of classes. After attending all or part of the fifth week of classes in your first semester of the program, there will be no refunds for the remainder of the program du-ration absent exceptional circumstances. The no refund dates for each program start date are:

12. Exceptional circumstances: Refunds for exceptional circum-stances may be granted on a very limited case-by-case basis by the Global UCF Office of Academic Services. Up to 100% of tuition and registration fees are refundable if due to circum-stances determined by Global UCF to be exceptional.

13. Public holidays and school vacation: Classes are usually not held on public holidays, and most school facilities will be closed. Classes will not be held during designated school vaca-tions. Global UCF will not make reimbursements for classes not offered.

Any student who is absent during the program or loses immigra-tion status due to absences will not be eligible for a refund for time missed.

15. Global UCF Academic criteria: Students are accepted into Global UCF with the strict understanding that progression through Global UCF and successful completion of any pro-gram will require satisfactory attendance and successful at-tainment of specified progression grades, which can be found at globalucf.com/apply-now/application-requirements. Stu-dents who do not meet the criteria for successful completion will not be allowed to proceed. Students may be offered advice on suitable alternative options, which may or may not include retaking courses or repeating certain courses. These alterna-tive options may involve additional time and costs, including tuition and accommodation fees.

16. Academic resources: All books and learning materials must be purchased by Global UCF students upon arrival at UCF.

17. Student conduct: All Global UCF students are required to follow UCF policies, rules, regulations and the UCF Golden Rule. No refund will be given in cases of expulsion. The UCF Code of Student Con-duct provides a framework of standard acceptable behavior for students and can be found at osc.sdes.ucf.edu. Students are responsible for understanding and complying with this Code. The Code of Student Conduct is available on the UCF website. All students studying at UCF have the right to be treated with respect and courtesy by UCF staff and fellow students in an environment free from harassment and conducive to learn-ing. UCF expects Global UCF students to abide by the Code of Conduct by accepting responsibility for your behavior and conducting yourself in a professional manner at all times, treating fellow students and staff with respect, honesty and courtesy.

18. Refunds: Global UCF will only make refunds in U.S. dollars, minus bank transfer and processing fees, and will make such refunds in the manner in which Global UCF was originally paid and to the account of the party or parties who made such payment(s). All refunds will be made to eligible parties within 45 days of written notice.
