PREZ SEZ

Ello All!

It’s been a crazy couple

of months here – the Club is finalising it’s

schedule for Midsumma and we’ve had our

usual events.

The Committee have made the decision to purchase a trailer to store and

transport the Club equipment – Gordon has kindly been storing the gear for

many years and this will make the movement of the equipment much easier.

The Club are finalising a grant application to help off-set some of the cost

involved, but the Club’s coffers have been steadily growing and it’s time to

give back to the members. Storage and security of the trailer and contents has

been determined, but access will be much improved.

Unfortunately, I have had to miss a few events due to work commitments, but

I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. The Magical

Mystery Tour is top of my list of things to finish!

Huge congratulations must go out to Michael Frith & Cesc Rubio who

celebrated their marriage through November! It’s not so long ago that

Motafrenz was part of the protest at Pride March with our Can’t Marry theme…

The Club Christmas party is this coming weekend – thanks to the host for

opening their home to the members.

Midsumma events are always a fun and we look forward to seeing as many of

you as possible at Carnival, the Magical Mystery Tour (yes – I’m biased about

this one!), Sports Day, and Pride March. All enable us to mix with our friends

from both within the Club and from out-side of it – to interact with the diverse

mix of people who make up the community in which Motafrenz is based. We

also get to participate in the wider motoring communities Car Show season

with many of the years principal events held early in the year.

With the forthcoming summer and festive season, the Committee and myself

wish all members a safe and happy season – remember, we wanna see your

faces!

Best wishes and safe motoring!

SUNDAY DRIVE & LUNCH (3rd Sunday of Every Month)

For details see events listing which follows here.

4WD DAY TRIPS

Motafrenz has in the past run successful 4WD events. Previously these were scheduled with fixed

dates and locations with varying difficulty levels 1 to 3 out of five. Some members have taken up

the offer to complete a 4WD courses. Motafrenz holds an EPIRB emergency beacon device for

such use where telephony and radio communications are compromised, which is often the case

on 4WD events. Past events have been family and community friendly with picnics in amazingly

beautiful locations. This year Motafrenz is looking to get back to having 4WD events and needs a

club member who is willing to do some planning and organising.

Page 12: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

12 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

With the full support of the committee, this willing member will coordinate dates, times, places and

participants. The Motafrenz committee looks forward to getting 4WD events rolling again and it

does need time commitment. Please consider becoming active in this role and taking on 4WD

events.

Contact: Email Jeff W at [email protected] or come along to a committee meeting and get

involved.

UPPER YARRA RESERVOIR

DRIVE By Russell L.

We were lucky, after a week where the weather had been on and off,

the forecast for our drive was sunny and 27C. The perfect weather for

a country drive and picnic amongst the stunning trees growing in the

Upper Yarra Reservoir picnic ground.

Page 23: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

23 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

We met between 10am to 10:30am at our normal meeting spot next to

Nando’s in Ringwood. As this is the third year this event had been run,

members who tuned up where mostly newbies, with Pamela first to

arrive in her stunning Mustang!

All up we had 12 members join us for the day, after a good 1 hour and

15 mins drive; we arrived at our picnic spot, claimed a table under the

trees in the shade and in true Motafrenz style, had a wonderful picnic

with many members bringing their favourite wines. One member only

came for the drive and turned around on arrival and said it was such a

good drive, I’m doing it again.

Page 24: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

24 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

The park is dog friendly, so several members bought their pooch and

special dog treat.

DOUG’S MORRIS

COMMERCIAL LC3

By Doug V.

The Morris Commercial Model LC was produced in Adderley Park

Birmingham England.

Introduced in 1937, the LC chassis carries van or lorry bodywork with a

payload of 25/30cwt (Hundred Weight) (1270-1524 Kg)

[C for Centum, a hundred and Wt for weight]

Page 26: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

26 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

During World War 2, production was stopped on the LC, but resumed

in 1945 with Morris Commercial, utilising the LC Chassis to produce a

PV model but configured as a van, utilising many of the LC design

configurations. As such the LC and PV models have interchangeable

parts. This is most often forgotten by restorers, which fail to identify

original parts and understand the inter change ability when trying to

complete an original restoration.

Page 27: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

27 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

In 1948, Morris Commercial began production of the LC3 with the

model ending production in 1952. The Morris Commercial company

did not produce a LC2, but migrated from the original LC to LC3

model.

Page 28: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

28 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

The Morris Commercial LC3 (1948) that I own, has had major work

completed whilst retaining as much original condition. Significant work

includes retaining the original 1948 engine such that it is as new

condition internally. The original gearbox has been rejuvenated

internally. As such the vehicle retains its original condition but has been

given a new lease on life. The intention when restoring was is to keep

the vehicle in as original 1948 condition as practical. This included

restoring the cabin to its spartan look.

Page 29: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

29 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

The Dunlop steel rims that are fitted are original and retain their Dunlop

pressed stamps. All brake line and hydraulics have been renewed,

including all systems. As such the vehicle is as new condition as

practical.

Page 30: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

30 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

Many of the spares utilised in the restoration were originally sourced

from England.

The LC3 is a rear wheel drive vehicle. The Engine incorporates a 4

Cylinder overhead valve engine in unit construction with a dry-plate

clutch and a four-speed and reverse gearbox. The engine is a

straightforward design and mounted at the front of the chassis. The

engine is rated at 15.94 HP (~12 kW) with 42 BHP (~31 kW) at 3250

RPM

Page 31: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

31 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

From the gearbox the transmission to the rear axle is by single

propeller shaft with universal jointed ends. Torque is transmitted to the

rear wheels only, through spiral bevel gears and a four-bevel pinion

differential.

The front axle is a common design with the track rod fitted with ball and

socket type connections. The rear axle is a three-quarter floating type

with the hubs mounted on double ball bearings.

The steering box incorporates a cam gear type coupling linked to the

front axle by a draglink employing a ball and socket type connection.

Page 32: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

Page 33: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

33 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

Petrol is delivered from a tank mounted on the right-hand side of the

chassis, with contents recorded on the dash. Original configuration

allowed Petrol to be delivered to the Carburettor by mechanical pump.

My vehicle has been modified to incorporate a electrically controlled

Fuel Pump, which delivers better volumetric flow to the Carburettor and

improves performance.

The foot brake is hydraulically operated and acts on all 4 wheels. The

hand break utilises a mechanical linkage and is independent of the

hydraulic system.

The suspension system incorporates semi-elliptical springs on all 4

wheels utilising hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers.

Page 34: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

34 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

The Cabin incorporates manual side opening ventilation flaps to control

temperature internally. Winter allows the luxury of warmth generated by

the engine to gently warm the cabin, whilst the use of flap cooling is

recommended during summer operation.

The dash instrumentation retains original SMITHS instrumentation

showing Oil, AMP’s, and speedometer in M.P.H.

Page 35: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

35 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

In 1948 the LC3 was built with all the attributes of modern automotive

engineering which may appear primitive by our modern standards.

During the time it was built it was regarded highly by drivers for its ease

of driving, control, safety (it was not fitted with seatbelts) and

responsive action.

The vehicle is maintained in first class condition with significant effort

on my part. The vehicle is always garaged.

Page 36: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

36 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

The vehicle is a RARE example, especially in this condition. The

vehicle often draws onlookers to admire the finish and presentation of

the vehicle. It would make an ideal Promotional vehicle.

The vehicle is currently offered FOR SALE at $34,000 Negotiable

(Does not include Wine Barrels) with a current Victorian RWC.

Please call Doug on 0417 563 566 for details or inspection.

CLUB PERMIT SCHEME

STICKER INPUT REQUESTED

Vic Roads through the AOMC is seeking user’s thoughts on the paper

sticker that goes on to your windshield.

They want to know if we want to keep it, this might mean a slight cost

increase.

Or remove it as a requirement; they suggest that it would reduce costs.

In my opinion it would not mean a reduced permit fee.

So please let me know your thoughts via SMS or email to

[email protected]

Also, a friendly reminder to make sure that you get to at least one

event per year.

And take note of which event you attended, I suggest you take a pic

and let me know when you are contacting me regarding renewals.

I will be in Spain from 15th December to 5th January if you’re renewal

comes in during this time you can send it though I will deal with it when

I get back.

Permits can be renewed up to three months after the expiration date,

without the need to get another RWC.

Happy red plate motoring,

Mike F, Club Permit Officer

VICROADS IS INTRODUCING A NEW

NUMBER RANGE FOR CLUB

PERMIT NUMBER PLATES

By AOMC

The current series of plates for club permit holders ranges from

00000.H – 99999.H. We’re currently issuing plates from 95000.H

onwards, and expect to complete this series in the coming months.

The number series in our next release will range from 0002.H.2 –

9999.H.9. This new series will run on our existing plate design (dark

red background/white lettering).

To ensure the plates are readable by electronic readers and intelligent

management systems (used by the Victoria Police and tolling

organisations), there will be some combinations in this new number

range that we can’t use, particularly those with the numbers 0, 1 or 5

directly before or after the H.

We’ll let you know when distribution of this new series of plates

commences being distributed.

Club permit enquiry February Delegates Meeting

CPS plates

Are plates transferable on sale of the vehicle?

When a CPS vehicle is sold, the permit is not transferrable and must

be cancelled with the purchaser to apply for a new permit. When the

permit is cancelled, there is no requirement for the plates to be

returned to VicRoads unless VicRoads specifically requests the plates

to be returned (which is done when a permit is cancelled due to a

breach.)

CPS plates are not transferrable except where (1) the owner

changes clubs or (2) the vehicle is sold to a member of the same

club.

There have been some instances of significant plates where re-use of

plates has been allowed. These are considered on a case by case

basis for rare and unusual circumstances.

WHEN CAR INTERIORS WERE

COLOURFUL Taken from https://macsmotorcitygarage.com/when-car-interiors-were-

colorful/ article by MCG on August 2 2017.

Article supplied by Jeff W.

Auto cabins are rather drab these days. Brown, gray, black. Let’s turn

back the clock a few years and recall when car interiors from the Motor

City were celebrations of color.

Page 42: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

42 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

The automobile is in a commodity phase of its product cycle, it

appears. For years now, the most popular exterior colors in the new car

showrooms include white, gray, and beige. Interiors are equally

nondescript, too: It’s rare to find anything more colorful than monotone

brown, black, or gray. And what’s more, no one appears to care. Car

buyers seem perfectly happy with these bland, limited choices.

It wasn’t always this way. A few decades ago, automobiles were bold,

bright celebrations of color, including their interiors. Here are a very few

examples—far from a complete survey to be sure, simply a quick look

back. Do you have a favorite colorful car interior of your own? Please

let us know. We’re up for a sequel or two.

Page 43: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

43 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

Chrysler was in early on the trend to colorful interior materials, it

seems. The carmaker’s popular Highlander trim package, which

featured a Tartan plaid matched with rich Oxblood leather, was

introduced in 1940 and continued well into the 1950s.

Page 44: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

44 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

The 1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible sported a novel approach in

interior materials: The cushions were reversible, with sporty leather on

one side and a woven fabric on the other. The two rear cushions in this

photo illustrate the choices, which complemented the Caribbean’s

three-tone exterior colors. Alas, 1956 was the real Packard’s final year

of production.

Page 45: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

45 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

For 1959, Chrysler Corporation (Plymouth Sport Fury convertible

shown here) offered a bold palette of upholstery fabrics with an

additional innovation: swiveling bucket seats to allow easier entry and

exit.

Page 46: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

46 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

In a possible nod to its customer base, American Motors offered a

variety of upholstery fabrics in the 1960s that looked more like

Grandma’s living room than an automobile cockpit. This 1967 Marlin in

fancy blue brocade is a perfect example. In succeeding years, AMC

would go fashion forward with interior themes by Levi’s, Gucci, and

Oleg Cassini.

Page 47: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

47 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

In the 1970s, the crushed velvet look came to rule the automotive

world. Or, “life inside a trombone case,” as it’s been called. Flashy

color choices included bright Cranberry like the cabin of this 1975

Buick Century.

Page 48: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

48 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

In the late 1970s, Ford Motor Company dressed up its otherwise drab

Ford Pinto and Mercury Bobcat subcompacts with flamboyant interior

options, including the Tangerine Alpine Plaid package on this ’78

Bobcat coupe. These far-out plaids weren’t limited to economy cars in

these years. Cadillac also offered similar combinations among its broad

variety of interior choices.

Page 49: THIS ISSUE - Motafrenz Car Club Inc

49 MOTAFRENZ CAR CLUB INC. CRUISE CONTROL

Pontiac was a style leader in interiors in the 1960s—for example,

check out the 1963 Catalina convertible in red above. The GM division

used a distinctive vinyl material with the trade name Morrikide, which

proved to be not only handsome but incredibly durable. Pontiac stylists

employed the premium vinyl in a variety of two-tone and three-tone

combinations, as show in the 1962 GM publicity photo below.
