The Canadian Avanti The Canadian Avanti is published bi-monthly by the Canadian Avanti Owners Association (CAOA), a chapter of the Avanti Owners Association International (AOAI). The Canadian Avanti Owners Association is a non-profit organization committed to preserving the history of the Avanti automobile. We currently have +60 members located in all provinces across Canada. We are a Chapter of the Avanti Owners Association International Inc. Our group strives to promote the research and study of the Avanti and the companies that have produced it over the years. We wish to share our knowledge with others and encourage the acquisition, preservation, restoration, and maintenance of all Avantis produced by Studebaker and successor companies. Our Canadian Chapter also promotes fellowship and camaraderie by publishing a newsletter bi-monthly, participating in local CAOA or Studebaker Drivers Club events and our general meetings held quarterly at various members’ homes. Ownership of an Avanti (Studebaker or successor) is not required.

Letters to the Editor

By Mike Emmerich

Editor: Stu promised to contact me when this date approaches so I will advise everyone for their last look. I plan to take lots of pictures.

June 13: Hi Mike, My name is Allan Fishman, a relatively new member of CAOA (last June). I'm having a problem with A/C on my '63 R3010. I've been told that my compressor has seized & require a replacement, have called several parts suppliers in U.S. (Myers, Studebaker International & a couple of others) but haven't come up with anything yet. Would you or anyone in the club have any suggestions? (I've also tried Canadian supplier in Campbellville). We have plans to attend the 50th Anniversary week in South Bend but I'd hate to try to drive that far with no A/C in the summer. I'm currently having a Saturn air dam installed to try and overcome the high temp problem inherent with most Avanti. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Allan Fishman. Editor: I sent his question to the membership for their ideas.

June 18: In regards to ac, Vintage Air has kits for Stud. In stock. ph. 1800 862 6658 call& talk to them. They are quite accommodating. John Holtz.

June 18: Hello Mike I have misplaced my Avanti parts book. However, I had a guy with an Avanti call a few months back who asked me if I had a Frigidaire AC for his Avanti. I did not but told him that the Frigidaire units were used by many GM from the mid-1950s to mid-1960s; however, there is nothing magic about an AC compressor. Almost any unit that will fit under the hood will do the job although an adaptor for the AC mount may be need and the drive belt length could change. Allan should confirm the make of his compressor and Google it. Could also check eBay. Ralph Hart

June 18: Hi Mike, I have a couple of suggestions. 1st. Find a reputable Radiator Air Conditioning shop and ask if they can send your compressor out for a rebuild. 2nd, I am guessing here but I think that several other cars of that era used the same compressor. Chrysler comes to mind. 3rd, Take your compressor off and install a Sanden compressor. A good shop should be able to fabricate the necessary brackets quickly. Look at http://www.motorsforum.com/studebaker/york-a-c-compressor-5083-.htm Other than that your call, Peter Sant.

June 18: Hi, My only suggestion would be to contact Bob Helm who sells AC for V8 Studebakers. You may be able to buy just the compressor bracket and a new Sanden compressor. If you want to stick with your original compressor style then you may find one on EBay eventually but, likely not in time for South Bend. I can speak positively for the air dam. Our AC didn't want to work very well over 50 mph or so. Seems not enough air was getting through the grille opening. Once I put the dam on it works fine and the engine runs cooler if I recall. Best of luck Graham Gagne

June 18: Regarding you air conditioner compressor. You might want to consider getting rid of the old York compressor and to go a newer type. I changed mine years ago and got rid of the R 12 at the same time. But if you want to remain original I have 3 compressors. The York compressors were used on many tractors - Case for sure. I have a brand new one that was a warranty claim as it needed a new head gasket. I have that gasket as well. It is virtually the same as the original Stude. I also have the original off of my R1 and another I thought might be a spare. You can reach me at "'[email protected]" or [email protected]. My phone no’s are 780 672 7428 or

CAOA Meeting Minutes June 30, 2012

Members Present: Welcome to the “Made In Canada” event hosted by the Ontario Chapter in Bellville, ON. There were ten members present at the meeting and twenty members plus two past members present at the event.

Call to Order: 10:15 am

Minutes: Minutes of April 29, 2012 as e-mailed by Mike Emmerich were presented. Motion to accept minutes made by Bill Harris, seconded by Jamie Holtz.

Treasurer’s Report: Report covering April 2012 to June 2012 presented by Dave Moxham. Motion to accept made by Dave Moxham, seconded by Harry Clark.

Membership Report: Bill Harris reported on membership status. We currently stand at 45 members. Bill will work with Steve Wohleber to send a letter to all previous members reminding them. Bill also requires your AOAI membership number.

Old Business:

Web Site: Please check out the website to see if your car is pictured (along with a story) and if it is not there – send to Sue Lusted. If you are sending in your Avanti and/or story for the first time, please ensure that you cc Mike Emmerich.

Newsletter: Are you able to click on the link and view/download/print?

Anniversary: 2013 will be our ten year anniversary. Some thought should be given to a “celebration” along with a special gift for all members. Being as we are a “Canadian” chapter, we need to do something suitable for all members. Ideas are welcomed so we can budget for next year.

Roster: Has everyone got the new roster? It is an eye chart, but you can maximize the file on the computer plus click on the e-mail address to send an e-mail. Save the link sent by Mike Emmerich and you will be able to access the latest anytime. Same applies to your newsletter.

DMA: Mike Emmerich nominated Dave Moxham for a Distinguished Member Award for his contributions to the CAOA which included

supporting our charter, acting as treasurer and attending many of our meetings and events. It will be announced at the International Meet in South Bend if he was selected.

Sponsorship: Ideas bandied about were a brick or Adopt-a-Car at the Studebaker National Museum or a donation to the LeMay Museum for Avanti 0001 restoration. Do you have any ideas?

New Business:

Judging: Carl Doughty has been asked to be head judge at the meet in South Bend. He advised that judging will not be as precise as the SDC; he is more concerned about condition. You will not judge your own car. If you are attending and are interested, please contact Steve Wohleber. Steve and Mike Emmerich have indicated that they are willing to try it.

Authenticity Guide: It was asked if there exists a judging guide for points. We will ask Carl Doughty and put them on-line.

Tech Session: Ralph Hart needs some input to get his 1964 R2 running. After and engine rebuild and many years of storage, he has been unable to keep the car running longer than 30 seconds before it starts dropping cylinders. Several members saw this as a challenge and a potential tech session at a later date. Stay tuned.

International Meet: Please advise Mike Emmerich if you are going. Again, many CAOA members are going so we want to make sure all are accounted for and pictures taken (even if not with an Avanti).

Red Deer: Looks to be a good event. Contact is Ted Dirksen. Not sure if any support is required.

Status of Avanti Corp: The website is still running, frozen in time as of 2007. Until Mike Kelley resolves his legal issues, may or may not be sold or be rejuvenated.

Events:

July 29-Aug 4, 2012: 48th INTERNATIONAL SDC and AOAI MEET in South Bend, IN. Hosted by AOAI Indiana Chapter. HQ: Inn at St Marys. Join us in celebrating 50 years of the Avanti! Activities at the Century Center and Fairgrounds. See www.michiana-chapter-sdc.com.

July 30-Aug 5, 2012: Red Deer is hosting the Super Run this year. This event is rotated between Brandon, Man - Saskatoon, Sask and Red Deer, Alta. Last year was Saskatoon. This may be a perfect opportunity for us to

12

meet and join in a great event. This is a full week’s event, July 30-Aug 5th. Please check it out at www.rocknreddeer.com

Meetings for 2012: Scheduled meetings will attempt to tie into an event. We encourage any member who would like to open their home to a

meeting (or know of a good location to hold one). Please contact any of the executive to let us know.

Sept 9 – Ralph and Marguerite Hart (Cambridge ON) Nov 25 – Jim and Barb Anderson (Dundas ON)

STUDEFRIENDS ABOUND!

Verne and Mervis Brinsmead

Greetings to all our snowaphile friends (is there such a word?) here in the Frozen Wastes of the Great White North! We confirmed snowaphobes (?) returned April 6 and were delighted to find that snow has been banned for the rest of the winter. Spring was quite enjoyable in Mississippi and we now can settle down and enjoy the Second Coming (of spring, naturally).

Mississippi is a friendly place and a lot less expensive than Florida, even though we were only about 90 minutes from Pensacola. Biloxi beach is vast, spectacular and free. We hooked up with the Seniors’ Centre while we were there – it’s quite active with a new $ million plus facility. We tagged along for a huge chili cook-off which was won by one of the long-term care homes and the head chef gets a spot on the Food Channel. Wonder how hot chili sits with the elderly residents? They also put on a very good musical featuring the tunes of World War II.

As usual, I took my SDC roster with me. There’s not a large group in Mississippi but we spent some time with a very nice couple, Frank and Phyllis Raises, who live on the northern fringe of Biloxi. Met them and the D’Iberville Cruisers at the Dairy Queen on St. Patrick’s Day evening for a nice, informal cruise night. A relaxing change after the Biloxi St. Patrick’s Day parade, which is quite a large and noisy affair. They were driving a beautiful silver ‘62 GT.

Frank and Phyllis told us about a street festival and car show in Wiggins, MS, the following Saturday and then invited us to ride along with them as they planned to go for the day! Accordingly, we showed up at their home Saturday morning, hid our Brand X (the Subaru)

14

Verne and Mervis Brinsmead

and piled into Frank’s almost-new Daytona sliding-roof Wagonaire. The robust A/C was much appreciated as it was getting hot by 8:30am.

Wiggins did it right. Several blocks of the town core were blocked off and a real old time carnival feel was everywhere. Huge car show, carney rides, street vendors, wandering performers, candy floss and lots of food. We took it all in, enjoyed real southern pulled pork sandwiches for lunch and found a shady spot to cool off. Three Studebakers showed up, Frank’s Wagonaire, a nice ’60 Silver Hawk and a lovely ’63 GT. Three Studebakers left with trophies.

On our return, Frank showed us around the “home ranch” which has two multiple-car garages and a huge carport. His “usual driver” is a ’63 Daytona hardtop in great condition; Phyllis usually drives a vintage Cadillac. They don’t own a modern car. The Raises are not very discriminating, though. They have diluted their great Studebaker collection with many examples of lesser brands like Ford and GM. To their credit, all are like new or better, including Frank’s mother’s light pink Lincoln sedan which is big enough for several families to live in. Frank and Phyllis intend to be in South Bend for the 2012 International, likely with the’62 GT. Look them up – they are wonderful folks and may even join us for the Maple Leaf Tour as they have never seen our fall colors.

On that note, I’ll plug the Maple Leaf even October 12 to 14 at the Village Inn, Lakefield and wish everyone a happy spring. See you at our great line-up of summer events.

Great Race

By Dave Moxham

On June 25 I received an e-mail with pictures from Dave and Barb Moxham: “Hi Mike, the pictures were taken at the sight of the old PetroCan station (now an empty lot until that portion of 69 is fourlaned. The spot is at Highway 69 and 64, the cars all stopped there at the end of their first leg from Sudbury. They all left over the next hour at one minute intervals heading for the French River trading post for a pee break. This was between 8.30 and 10.00 a.m. I did not get another shot of the Avanti, an oversight I guess. One of the fellows in the 1916 Studebaker told me that he had just bought a 63 Avanti R1.” It looked like a vintage car rally of some sort, with sponsorship etc. I noticed that all the cars had www.greatrace.com on the side. I went to the website to get some information. The Great Race is a cross-country rally that pits driver/navigator teams against the clock and against each other. This year’s event will be around the Great Lakes, covering 19 cities, 2 countries and 4 states. Entrants will participate in a timed, controlled-speed, endurance competition over scenic public highways and roads. The scores for each team are the result of a team’s ability to follow all designated course instructions precisely. Following specific course instructions, teams navigate through 4 to 7 timed checkpoints each day. Their arrival time at each checkpoint is recorded and compared against the perfectly driven route, with each second off the perfect time, (either early or late) counted as penalty points. The winning team is the one with the lowest overall score (the most accurately driven route) at the end of the event. The vehicles are Antique Vintage Cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles with body and drive train built 1969 and earlier. It will last eight days and when factoring the costs for hotel, food, gas, and entrance fee is not an inexpensive trip, but I am sure it is a blast. According to the schedule, they left Sault St Marie ON June 24 and arrived in Sudbury ON that evening. June 25 saw them leaving Sudbury on route to Barrie ON and Dave and Barb saw them off. There is a blog on the website as follows: Day 3 In the Books This has been another excellent day, starting early this morning in Sudbury, travelling south to Parry Sound. Our noon stop at the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame included an interesting array of local cars and an enthusiastic crowd. Racers were treated to a tasty lunch prior to heading to Barrie. With threatening skies, it appeared as if the evening show would be a repeat of last evening; it wasn’t to be! With the Mayor present along with representatives of both the provincial and federal governments the rains held off. In a beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Simcoe, the teams arrived to an enthusiastic turnout. Well done Barrie! Tomorrow, on to Barry’s Bay…after crossing through Algonquin Park, then on to my hometown, Kanata/Ottawa, Ontario. How cool it will be to do a Great Race evening right in my own back yard! Posted June 25 by Motormouth Registration is now open for 2013 – It would be cool to have an Avanti registered – are you game? The following are just some of the participants – quite a variation of vehicles.

Last Laugh…

Two little boys are in a hospital, lying on beds next to each other, outside the Operating Room.

The first kid leans over and asks, 'What are you in here for?'

The second kid says, 'I'm in here to get my tonsils out and I'm a little nervous.'

The first kid says, 'You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze.'

The second kid then asks, 'What are you in here for?'

The first kid says, 'A circumcision.'

And the second kid says, 'Whoa, good luck with that one, buddy! I had that done when I was BORN ... Couldn't walk for a year.
