For if you pain pain them so, and they cry cry out to me, I will surely hear hear their cries and become enraged…” (22:21-23) The Torah commands us here never to pain widows and orphans. Elsewhere, the Torah commands us not to pain any of our fellow Jews (Vayikra 25:17), even those who are not widowed or orphaned. The possuk here, however, by widows and orphans, is quite different than the one there. As a matter of fact, this unusual possuk is different than all other p’sukim in the Torah. In this possuk (22), each verb is stated twice over: אם ענה תענה אותו כי אם צעק יצעק אלי שמוע אשמע צעקתו.The question is, why? Perhaps the reason is because for these individuals, for a widow and an orphan, the pain is twice as bad, and to emphasize this the torah articulates it doubly . (Incidentally yet ironically, this passuk is perek 22, passuk 22. Double talk indeed!) A widow has no husband to turn to or complain to, no husband to protect her and give her love and support. She does not have a husband to cry to, and to stick up for her when she is pained. Her pain is therefore far worse than the average married woman. The same is true about an orphan, of course. Their pain is twice as bad for they do not have that husband/fatherly support to alleviate the pain. Thus the Torah tells us that their cries will be greater and that Hashem will most certainly hear their cries and respond with harshness chas v’shalom. May we learn to be sensitive to every Jew, especially to our spouse and children. With that we will undoubtedly bring forth Hashem’s love and kindness upon ourselves and our people.
