Invitation to Travel to Pakistan

to Visit PEB Schools Our church has a major contributor of scholar-

ships to the Martin Pur School in Pakistan as we pray for all the school children there. Each year in November the Presbyterian Education Board spon-sors a trip to Lahore, Pakistan, to meet the teach-ers and students in many of the schools. This year the trip will take place from November 14-25, and the Mission Commission would love to send a group to participate.

The Pakistani culture welcomes all guests with great generosity so food and accommodations in guest houses are all provided The only cost is for airfare, visa, and personal spending. Safety of guests is also a priority to the staff of PEB and local authorities. Our group would be visiting all the PEB schools in the area with a day stop at Martin Pur School to meet the girls we sponsor! This promises to be an exciting opportunity to be wel-comed into an extension of our Bound Brook family in a welcoming culture.

Anyone who would like to explore joining this trip is welcome to learn more on May 12 after church or contact Carol Wilson ([email protected]).

Exhibit A of Joan Bloomer’s remarkable creative and artistic talent was displayed by Pastor Linda a number of weeks ago when Linda wore the colorful, quilted stole designed and fabricated by Joan for the moderator (then Linda for another moment) of our presbytery. Little did Linda (or any of us) know that Laura had commissioned Joan to make another, similar stole for Linda’s recent birthday! We will likely see the beautiful colorful stole again when the Lenten season has concluded. That magnificent demonstration of quilt-making was hardly Joan’s first go-round with quilting!

Though Joan attributes many of her handiwork talents to her mother, who taught her as a child to knit, crochet, quilt and sew, the quilting gene bloomed

(no pun intended!) into fullness when Joan and her husband moved to Arbor Glen twenty years ago. In the dedicated quilting room at Arbor Glen (now Laurel Circle), Joan and her fellow quilters have made some 500 plus quilts of varying sizes for varying groups and organizations including victims of the Bound Brook floods, vets at the V.A. Hospital in Lyons, children who lost family members in 9/11 and, more recently, for the Center for Great Expectations at St. Peter’s University Medical Center in New Brunswick. Joan describes the Center as a place welcoming of pregnant young women, abused family members and people from broken homes. Every one of the quilts made by the Arbor Glen quilters are donated to the various causes they embrace, and all of the quilting materials are donated to the quilters. Joan whimsically describes her group as the “Foundling Home for Fabric.” As further demonstration of Joan’s talent with the sewing machine, Joan not only made her own wedding dress but, from that dress, also made the Christening dresses for the first child of her two sons!

Further proof (Exhibit B-Z?) of Joan’s artistic talent is abundantly displayed in the artwork on the walls of her home. She admits to having always been a drawer and having taken art classes in high school. How-ever, after graduating from Bloomfield High School, Joan attended the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, where her focus was on advertising art, rather than fine art. She worked in that field for several years before marrying and having children. Though she stenciled, painted kitchen cabinets and other similar projects, it wasn’t until Joan and her husband moved to Arbor Glen that she began to use “oils on canvas” as she describes her preferred artistic medium. Here’s how that happened: her husband, Ed, made her a deal she couldn’t refuse! He said, “If you take art lessons, I’ll do the vacuuming.” And paint she has done! Joan specializes in trees and does a lovely job of depicting falling snow amidst the trees. Between the handmade items and the paintings, Joan’s home is a virtual art museum! As an aside, her home is filled with owls of every type – paintings, prints, statues, etc. Those owls that remain are apparently but a fragment of the original collection as it grew to be.

But Joan will say that her real passion in life is not quilting or art, but children. Not only her own but many, many others as well. Joan was a Girl Scout herself for a few years, and only last Sunday she worked with a local Girl Scout troop on a badge that involved learning about scouting years ago. As the mother of sons, Joan, not surprisingly, became a Boy Scout leader. She is understandably extremely proud that all of her sons became Eagle Scouts as did her two grandsons. For 36 years Joan trained Boy Scout leaders through the Morris Sussex Boy Scout Council. She was the Assistant Camp Director for one year at the Stony Brook Girl Scout Camp at the South Mountain Reservation where she had been a camp counselor for several years. She was also the Director of a Cub Scout day camp in Andover where she had a team of young men who were her counselors for the 80 youngsters that attended the weekly sessions. Joan was proud to see 17 young men become Eagle Scouts during and after the camping work with her. Joan’s philosophy is, “If you keep boys busy and take them into the woods, you’ll make good kids.”

Joan and her husband joined BBPC about 20 years ago when they moved to Arbor Glen. It was about then that the church became involved in the Appalachian Service Project (ASP). Being an “unreliable hammer wielder,” Joan acted rather as the treasurer of the project for many years and continues today in that role with the appreciated assistance of others. Remarkably, what she does every year (also with a team of helpers) is to send each and every one of the ASP cars off with a box of homemade cookies. As the number of ASP volunteers has increased, so too has the number of cookies needing to be baked. Last year 1400 cookies were sent with the team to Tennessee. Cookie baking and freezing will begin in early May. It’s not too late to join the team of bakers! Joan appreciates all offers of cookie-baking as-sistance. As her husband apparently described her, Joan is a “professional volunteer!” We are sure lucky for that!
