THIS WILL BE ‘SUNSHINE’ ON A RAINY DAY
by Jeff OlsenTalk about enthusiasm. It's really
catching, especially with theSunshine Hospitality Home that willhave a huge impact on many of usup here.
Kelly Kofstad sat in her upstairsoffice at Citizens State Bank, andshe talked fast and excitedly aboutwhat the Sunshine HospitalityHome will mean to Roseau Countyresidents, who doctor in GrandForks or have a family member hos-pitalized there and need a place tostay while visiting.
"If you have a doctor's appoint-ment on Monday morning and it'ssupposed to be bad weather andyou want to get there on Sunday, you can stay at the SunshineHospitality Home on Sunday nightand be there for your appointment
on Monday morning," she said."Or, say you have a premature
baby who is transferred to GrandForks. Where are Mom and Dadgoing to stay? It takes a lot ofmoney to have a hotel for months.Who knows how long they will haveto be there?"
And then, with another exuberantbreath, she exclaimed, "They'rebreaking ground in 2017!
Yes, and they are looking fordonations to make SunshineHospitality Home a beautiful reality.
"They can make contributions atCitizens State Bank in Roseau,Border State Bank in Greenbush, and Security State Bank inWarroad," she said, adding thatRoseau County has its ownfundraising team.
"We have Jack Swanson, SarahKofstad, Abigail Johnson, AbbyJohnston, and myself," she said, adding that Theresa Garbe, former-ly of Roseau and now in GrandForks is the chair.
"Theresa is actually working forSunshine," she said, and then high-lighted that there will be 14 roomsavailable for lodging.
Just a word about the realSunshine, a remarkable woman forwhom the facility will stand out as amonument.
According to the brochure: TheSunshine Memorial Foundation is aNorth Dakota non-profit that wasestablished by Van and Dee Larson.
The Larsons established theFoundation in memory and in honorof their daughter, Shannon"Sunshine" Larson, who passedaway in 2007 at the age of 31 fromheat stroke and dehydration whilehiking in Arizona. The purpose ofthe Foundation is to support charita-ble programs promoting Shannon'sattitude of helping others.
The Sunshine Hospitality Homewill be constructed on the west sideof the Altru Campus, according toKofstad.
"You don't have to be an Altrupatient," she said. "You just need amedical reason to be there."
Yes, it is recommended that aperson make a $25 donation ormore.
"But if you can't afford it, there'sno charge," she said.
Roseau County has pledged toraise $250,000 for their share inhelping to fund Sunshine HospitalityHome.
"Basically, we're raising ourmoney to sponsor a room, to namea room," she said, explaining that if10 people from Roseau Countyneeded to stay at the facility, theycould if there's room available.
"Everybody knows somebodywho could use a room like this," saidKofstad, mentioning a need when afamily member is transferred toGrand Forks for specialized treat-ment.
Once the Sunshine Hospitality
Home is in operation, a family mem-ber could stay in Grand Forks for anextended time to spend time withthat family member.
Earlier this month, TheresaGarbe, the Roseau County chair-person, who formerly worked forAltru Clinic in Roseau, was reachedin Grand Forks.
She noted that the RoseauCounty team has surpassed thehalfway mark of their goal of$250,000.
"To date, we actually have$136,926," she said, adding that theSunshine Memorial Foundation, which was established in 2012, isseparate from the hospital system.
The Sunshine Hospitality Homewon't be some shack.
"We've estimated the cost to be$3.54 million," said Ms. Garbe. "Weare actually about 70 percent donewith raising the funds to build it."
Yes, many hands make lightwork.
"We actually have eight regionalteams that are raising funds," shesaid, and then singled out theRoseau County Team.
"They're actually one of the high-est fundraising teams right now,"she said.
A Great Idea"If you build it, they will come" is a
famous quote from Field of DreamsAnd build it they will soon do.Fundraising is important and so
will be the availability of the facility
right next to the Grand Forks hospi-tal.
"It's a lot like most hospitalityhomes - like the Ronald McDonaldHouse," she said, emphasizing thatthey will continue to raise fundsafter it is in operation.
"Their hope is to raise fundswhen someone does stay atSunshine," she said, mentioning anominal fee of $25 a night.
"It's not an obligation if someoneis unable to do so," she said.
Already the response from volun-teers offering to help staff the build-ing has been remarkable, according
to Ms. Garbe."Hundreds of people have
already volunteered to work at thehome," she said, mentioning thatthere will be two full-time employeesand a number of volunteers duringeach shift.
Directly under the photo ofShannon "Sunshine" Larson on thebrochure, it says it all: "Those whobring sunshine to the lives of otherscannot keep it from themselves."
The Roseau County Team wouldlike to thank you for your wonderfulcontributions.

"But when I decided to retire, Ikind of made up my mind with myfamily obviously that I had putenough time in," he said. "I wastired of driving, and there arethings I'd like to do before I gettoo old."
He still has a lot of friendsdown in St. Paul, but he has noregrets
"I ran a good race, fought agood fight, won some, lost a lot ofthem, and got some things ourdistrict," he said. "I'm just happythat I was able to do what I coulddo."
Like a former major leaguerwho hangs up his glove after along career, LeRoy hasn't quitcold turkey.
"Actually, I'm going to be help-ing Collin Peterson with some
stuff in his district," he said aboutassisting U.S. Rep. CollinPeterson (D-Minn.).
He laughed."You don't want to let all that
experience just kind of witheraway," he said.
There was one final question.Did he ever worry on ElectionNight?
Yes, he had.He laughed again."The Lord says you shouldn't
have to worry because he'swatching over everything," hesaid. "Sometimes, it's hard not toworry."
And then this old public ser-vant, who never seemed to getruffled or be quick to anger, said,"Thank you!"
He should be thanked for along career looking after District1A up here in our neck of thewoods.
TROOPER PHILLIPE continued from front page
The Minnesota State Patrol in Washington, D.C."There were African-Americans, Hispanics, Chinese, Somalians, and there were tears of joy," he said. "They were
happy and excited. It was neat to see the reaction of the people from all the different backgrounds that were pro-Trump."
He returned home to Warroad late this past weekend with some cherished memories."I'll never forget it my entire life. It was really humbling, and it was an honor to be there and to represent Minnesota,"
he said. "It was a great experience, just to see everything that goes on - the marching bands and the presidential lim-ousine, the dignitaries and the Vice-President."
A week from now, Trooper Aaron Phillipe will be pulling a speeder over on some highway, and just maybe he cantell about his experiences in D.C. while writing out a ticket.
