This is an art project that we continuously work on throughout the entire year during free class time and for homework. ZENTANGLE RULES: The design should not have an "up" or a "down" it is without orientation. It should not be representative of any certain recognizable object; rather, it should be abstract . The drawing should be completed in black ink or pencil on the white paper provided. The Zentangle Method requires utmost focus. Unlike doodling, the person creating a Zentangle is giving it his or her full, undivided attention. A Zentangle cannot be created while on the phone or listening to a lecture, because focus is an important part of this art form. ZENTANGLE SUGGESTED STEPS: Draw a string. Take your pencil and draw a "string" inside the border. According to the Zentangle Method, a string is a curved line or squiggle that will lend structure to your design. The pattern you create will emerge according to the contours of your string. Start creating a tangle. A "tangle" is a pattern drawn in pen along the contours of a string. One Zentangle may have just one tangle, or a combination of different tangles. Use your pen to begin drawing whatever pattern comes to you again, there's no right or wrong move inside a Zentangle. Penciled shading or solid black shapes can be added to the tangles to create more depth and visual interest. Don't erase mistakes. You can't erase mistakes you make in pen. That's part of the reason tangles are created in pen, not pencil (aside from any shading you might want to add). Focus intently on your work. Just as you would while meditating, free your mind of worries and problems. Remember that the act of creating a Zentangle should feel relaxing. Zentangle designs are due at the end of every marking period. You will receive a project grade for your work.

This  is  an  art  project  that  we  continuously  work  on  throughout    the  entire  year  during  free  class  time  and  for  homework.

ZENTANGLE  RULES:  → The  design  should  not  have  an  "up"  or  a  "down"  -‐  it  is  without  orientation.

→ It  should  not  be  representative  of  any  certain  recognizable  object;  rather,  it  should  be  abstract.

→ The  drawing  should  be  completed  in  black  ink  or  pencil  on  the  white  paper  provided.

→ The  Zentangle  Method  requires  utmost  focus.

ZENTANGLE  SUGGESTED  STEPS:  → Draw  a  string.

→ Start  creating  a  tangle.  A  "tangle"  is  a  pattern  drawn  in  pen  along  the  contours  of  a  string.  One  Zentangle  may  have  just  one  tangle,  or  a  combination  of  different  tangles.  Use  your  pen  to  begin  drawing  whatever  pattern  comes  to  you  -‐  again,  there's  no  right  or  wrong  move  inside  a  Zentangle.

→ Penciled  shading  or  solid  black  shapes  can  be  added  to  the  tangles  to  create  more  depth  and  visual  interest.

→ Don't  erase  mistakes.  You  can't  erase  mistakes  you  make  in  pen.  That's  part  of  the  reason  tangles  are  created  in  pen,  not  pencil  (aside  from  any  shading  you  might  want  to  add).

→ Focus  intently  on  your  work.

Completeness  of  Task

! More  than  4  designs  are  completed  masterfully.

! The  entire  box  is  filled  with  a  wide  variety  of  zentangle  patterns.

! 4  designs  are  completed.  ! Boxes  are  filled  with

zentangle  patterns.

! Designs  are  partially  completed.  ! Boxes  are  mostly  or  partially

filled  with  patterns  or  are  completely  filled  with  one  continuous/similar  pattern.

! Designs  are  not  completed  ! Designs  are  pencil  drawn  but

not  executed  with  pen  or  marker.

Concept

! Student  has  a  clear  understanding  of  the  elements  and  principles  of  design  and  demonstrates  a  mastery  of  composition.

! Student  shows  a  connection  between  new  and  prior  learning.

! Student  has  an  awareness  of  the  elements  and  principles  of  art.

! Student  demonstrates  a  basic  understanding  of  composition.

! The  project  shows  little  evidence  of  an  understanding  of  the  elements/principles.

! Shows  little  evidence  of  an  understanding  of  composition.

! Student  showed  no  evidence  of  an  understanding  of  composition.

Technical    Skill  &

Craftsmanship

-‐    Every  design  is  well  crafted,  neat  and  detailed.

-‐    Patterns  and  line  sequences  are  challenging  and  varied.

-‐    Student  used  techniques  learned  throughout  the  year  to  solve  art  problem.

! Technical  skill  was  attempted  in  some  designs,  but  not  achieved  throughout.

! Craftsmanship  and  neatness  were  attempted  but  not  totally  achieved.

 ! Student  worked  with  others

participated  in  preparation  and  cleanup  when  asked.

! Student  worked  on  one  theme  for  the  entire  project  with  some  variation.

! Student  did  a  minimal  amount  of  prep  and  cleanup  and  was  asked  several  times  to  assist.
