People Inspire PeoplePeople have always been a key driving force of the Jardine Matheson Group and we

are most fortunate to possess many ‘people who inspire people’. One such person is

Simon Keswick, whose 50 years with the Group were recently recognized, in particular,

the contribution he has made in terms of his ability to inspire others.

In our feature on pages 14-19, we look at how the Group’s strong investment in

people helps them to realize their potential through excellent career advancement

opportunities and develops and nurtures the next generation of leaders.

As we enter the Chinese New Year of the Snake, the Group is performing steadily.

Although we continue to live in uncertain times, I am confident that with our market

leading businesses with their strong balance sheets, we have an excellent base on

which to build for the future, driven, as we have been for over 180 years, by the quality

and character of our people.

Group Chairman Meets Indonesia’s President at St James’s Palace

A delegation from Indonesia led by

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

met with Jardine Matheson Group

Chairman Sir Henry Keswick at St James’s

Palace, London during a state visit to the

United Kingdom. This was the President’s

first visit to the UK for 20 years.

Sir Henry, Jardine Matheson Director Simon

Keswick, and Indonesia Country Chairman

Jonathan Chang also had the privilege of

a private audience with the President who

was accompanied by his Ministers of Trade,

Energy and Mineral Resources, Tourism,

Foreign Affairs, Industry and Defence.

During their meeting, the President was

briefed on Jardines’ history in Indonesia

and on how the Group has grown its

business there since the 1970s.

During his visit, President Yudhoyono

addressed a business conference organized

by the UK-ASEAN Business Council at

which Matheson & Co. Director Lord Powell

of Bayswater was also a speaker.

In a separate event to mark the

President’s visit, Sir Henry hosted a

very successful dinner reception for

the Indonesian delegation at Mandarin

Oriental Hyde Park, London, which was

attended by some 50 guests.

Group Honours Simon Keswick’s 50 Years

A dinner was held in The

Penthouse at Jardine House in

Hong Kong to honour Director

Simon Keswick’s 50 years with the

Jardine Matheson Group.

During that period, Mr Keswick who

began his career as a trainee in the

banking department of Matheson

& Co in London in October 1962,

has been involved in many different

aspects of the Group’s development

and played a key role in its growth

and continuing success. In 1982, at

a critical point in Jardines’ history,

Mr Keswick returned to Hong Kong

from London and took over as

‘Taipan’. For the next six years, he

steered the Group through one of its

most difficult periods.

Paying tribute to Simon Keswick at

the dinner, current Group Managing

Director Ben Keswick said that for

over half a century, Mr Keswick

had demonstrated an enduring

commitment to the ‘Firm’.

“His robust and determined

approach to business has made

a significant contribution to the

Group’s development. He has created

major businesses and steered

Jardines successfully through some

of its darkest days,” he said.

“If anything though, it has been

his charm and his ability to get the

best out of people that will be seen

as his greatest contribution. Those

who worked closely with him over

the years tell of how he was always

supportive and gave them space to

grow and develop.”

To mark the occasion, Group Deputy

Managing Director Adam Keswick

presented Simon Keswick with a

bowl engraved with the Chinese

characters for ‘Jardines’. He also

received a special commemorative

edition of Thistle magazine

highlighting his 50 years with

the Group.

Asia Pacific Regional Board Meeting Held in Bangkok

The Jardine Matheson Group’s annual

Asia Pacific Regional Board (APRB)

meeting was held in Thailand at

the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok in

December 2012. The event brings

together Board members, country

heads and chief executives of the

Group’s main listed companies.

The APRB programme consisted of a

series of presentations focusing on

Southeast Asia and mainland China.

Guest speakers included former Prime

Minister of Thailand, Abhisit Veijajiva,

Professor Illian Mihov of INSEAD and

Mike Henry, Chief Marketing Officer of

BHP Billiton.

Speaking at a cocktail reception for

participants, government officials

and local business partners, Jardine

Matheson Group Managing Director

Ben Keswick said that the Group

had a long association with Thailand

through its many flourishing business

investments there.

As well as Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok,

which Mr Keswick added, set the

benchmark across the whole hospitality

industry, other Group businesses

operating in Thailand included Hongkong

Land, Jardine Engineering Corporation,

Jardine Schindler, Jardine Shipping, and

Jardine Lloyd Thompson. In addition,

Astra sourced over US$1 billion worth

of components from Thailand each year

for its automotive manufacturing plants,

while Dairy Farm bought a significant

amount of Thai foodstuffs to sell at its

outlets across the region.

Lord Sassoon Joins Jardine Matheson Group

Lord Sassoon has been appointed

to the boards of Jardine Matheson

Holdings and Matheson & Co Limited,

based in London in an executive

capacity. He has also been appointed

as a director of Hongkong Land

Holdings, Dairy Farm International

Holdings and Mandarin Oriental

International.

James Sassoon began his career at

KPMG, before joining SG Warburg

(later UBS Warburg) in 1985. He first

joined the Treasury in 2002 as a civil

servant, where he had responsibility

for financial services and enterprise

policy. From 2008 to 2010, acting

as an adviser to the then Shadow

Chancellor, he conducted The Tripartite

Review of the United

Kingdom’s system of

financial regulation.

From May 2010 he was

the first Commercial

Secretary to the Treasury

in the UK, and acted

as the Government’s

Front Bench Treasury

spokesman in the House

of Lords. During his

banking and government

careers, James Sassoon

had a consistent focus on international

business, particularly relating to Asia.

“We are delighted to welcome Lord

Sassoon to the Board of Jardine

Matheson,” said Group Chairman

Lord Sassoon, who has joined the Jardine Matheson Group, addresses the Think Asia, Think Hong Kong Business Symposium in September 2011 in his then capacity as Commercial Secretary to the Treasury.

Sir Henry Keswick. “His expert

knowledge and extensive experience

in the business, government and

Group Managing Director Meets Top Officials in Hanoi

As part of a recent visit to Vietnam,

Jardine Matheson Group Managing

Director Ben Keswick met with the

country’s Deputy Prime Minister

Hoang Trung Hai and Minister of

Planning and Investment Bui Quang

Vinh in Hanoi. During their meeting,

the macro-economic challenges

currently facing Vietnam were

discussed as well as a large project

being pursued by Hongkong Land

in the Central Business District of

Ho Chi Minh City. The Deputy Prime

Minister also expressed his support

of Jardine Matheson’s long-term

commitment to Vietnam.

Outside the offices of the Vietnam Government are from left: Cosimo Jencks, Hongkong Land Head of Commercial Property, Cambodia & Vietnam; Ben Keswick, Managing Director, Jardine Matheson Group; Hoang Trung Hai, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam; Alex Newbigging, Managing Director, Jardine Cycle & Carriage; and Jardine Matheson (Vietnam) Country Chairman Alain Cany.

The Jardine Matheson Group’s Interim

Management Statement for the

period 1st July to 6th November 2012

reports that the Group has performed

steadily with underlying earnings in

line with last year. The results show

a strong balance sheet with net debt

little changed during the period.

Jardine Pacific’s operations produced

mixed performances and its results

overall were slightly behind those

for last year. Jardine Motors is

seeing good levels of activity in

Hong Kong, but its results have been

materially affected by difficult trading

conditions in Southern China. Jardine

Lloyd Thompson achieved further

organic growth supported by strong

revenue generation in Latin America

and Asia.

Hongkong Land’s commercial

properties saw generally positive

rental reversions despite subdued

markets, while the contribution

from its residential developments

is greater than had been

anticipated at the start of the year.

Dairy Farm’s businesses continued

to perform well with improvements

in both sales and earnings.

Mandarin Oriental benefited from

positive trading environments,

although it is experiencing some

reduction in levels of corporate

business. Astra is achieving strong

car sales in Indonesia, which has

more than offset lower returns

from a number of its other areas

of activity.

The Jardine Matheson Group and

Hongkong Caterers celebrated the

40th year of their joint venture

partnership with a gala dinner held

at the City Hall Maxim’s Palace.

Addressing guests, Jardine

Matheson Group Chairman

Sir Henry Keswick said that the

partnership had started with the

establishment of Maxim’s Caterers’

first fast food outlet in Central

in 1972. It had since grown into

Hong Kong’s premier restaurant

group with a portfolio of over 700

outlets in a wide variety of popular

formats, with sales that now exceed

HK$10 billion (US$1.29 billion).

“While Maxim’s has had 40 very

successful years behind it, the best

is yet to come,” predicted Sir Henry.

“It has exciting new opportunities

in China and in other new markets

such as with Starbucks in Vietnam,

which is due to open its first store

in 2013. So I am confident that we

shall see Maxim’s continue to grow

and prosper.”

During the event, two cheques of

HK$1 million each were presented to

MINDSET from Hongkong Caterers

and Maxim’s, who have supported

the charity since 2006 with

their donations now totaling

HK$8 million.

Accepting the cheques,

Jardine Matheson Group

Managing Director and

MINDSET Chairman Ben

Keswick said that over the

the awareness and understanding of

“Generous contributions like these

are of direct benefit for those in need

and have, for example, paid for the

development of MINDSET Place.

I would like to say a big thank you

to Maxim’s and Hong Kong Caterers

for being great partners and for their

great support of MINDSET,” said

Mr Keswick.

Jardine Matheson (China) – Supporting the Group on the Mainland

As the Jardine Matheson Group

continues to grow its businesses in

mainland China, its corporate presence

there, Jardine Matheson (China) (JMC),

has recently restructured and expanded

its operations to enable it to better serve

Group interests in priority regions.

JMC has had representative offices

in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and

Shenzhen for many years, but extended

its reach into the Southwest with the

opening of a new office in Chongqing

in March 2012 to reflect the Group’s

increasing investments in that region.

“Our geographical spread now covers

all the ‘hot points’ of Group business

in China at present and the major

activities of its business units,” said

Adam Williams, who as Group Chief

Representative oversees all JMC’s

representative offices as well as

being Chief Representative of the

Beijing Office.

JMC’s mission is to assist Group

businesses in mainland China.

Essentially this comprises an in-depth

understanding of the political scene

at Central and Provincial Government

levels; a reading of the economic trends;

keen knowledge of the way the systems

and processes work; and the building of

key relationships. JMC provides support

for Group companies, organizes visits for

senior Group management and conducts

research to aid Group companies. JMC

also provides regular briefings in Hong

Kong on the current trends on the

Mainland for management teams from

across the Group.

JMC’s comprehensive approach means

that whenever a Group company

requires assistance, the relevant JMC

Representative Office can provide

on the ground support and put them

in touch with the right person in the

right office.

“That could be in Foreign Affairs,

the Ministry of Commerce, State

Planning or in any other Secretariat

or regulatory body,” said Mr Williams.

“We build up relationships within the

various institutions so that when a

business unit needs a licence or has a

problem, we can provide clear advice

and direct them to the right contact

who is in a position to help address

the issue.”

Such relationships are also most

important when it comes to organizing

meetings during the regular visits of

senior management from the Group,

including Group Chairman Sir Henry

Keswick, Directors and JMC Chairman

David Hsu.

Sir Henry, for example, meets senior

Government leaders and officials who

often have extensive commitments.

JMC is well placed to arrange these

meetings, as well as deal with the

bureaucracy along the way.

“It can be an incredibly lengthy and

complicated process, but over the

last decade we have been incredibly

fortunate in being able to make

things happen. Our ability to get to

know senior officials, and enable

them to become acquainted with and

understand the Jardine Matheson

Group, is the art we have developed

over the years,” said Mr Williams.

In its support of Group businesses,

JMC’s representative offices are

strategically placed, with the new

facility in Chongqing an obvious

addition to the original four, which

were opened in the 1980s.

“Over the last decade, Hongkong

Land has been investing in luxury

developments in Chongqing and

in Chengdu and as other Group

companies have also moved into this

region, we now have motor, retail,

insurance and hotel interests, as well

as our joint venture at the new airport

in Kunming,” said David Hsu. “This

made Chongqing a clear choice for a

new representative office.”

In spite of the economic slowdown, the

outlook for business in mainland China

remains good.

“The Group always takes a long-term

view and a downturn is a good time to

invest,” said Mr Hsu. “As long as one is

cautious there are many opportunities

for Group businesses to pursue.”

crowds in both places.

In Singapore, the SL was launched at

the new event venue of ‘Gardens By

the Bay’ where guests were greeted

by two classic SLs, the 300SL and

the 190SL, before the unveiling of

the latest SL model, which breaks

new ground with its all-aluminum

body and high performance engine.

Similarly in Hong Kong where Zung Fu

introduced the new SL-Class at a large-

scale car show at Ocean Terminal,

Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts were

impressed by the extensive weight

reduction achieved with the new

body and its substantially lower fuel

consumption, thanks to state-of-the-

art BlueDIRECT engine technology.

Meanwhile back in Singapore, the

annual Mercedes-Benz Driving

Experience held at Changi Exhibition

Centre gave participants the

opportunity to acquire competent

driving and safety skills in a wide range

of Mercedes-Benz models led by a

team of qualified professional safety

driving instructors from Australia.

There was also a Mercedes-Benz First

Gear Programme for younger drivers

between the ages of 18-25, which

aimed to inform, educate and provide

practical experience, addressing the

attitudes and behaviour that often

affect young drivers when they take to

the road.

JC&C’s launch of the new Citroën

DS5 also attracted wide attention

both during the pre-sales marketing

campaign and the actual sales phase.

The Citroën DS5, which is the latest

addition to the DS line, combines

compact body dimensions with a

spacious interior and boasts the

finest Citroën technology. JC&C’s

DS5 campaign centred on the

communication tagline ‘refinement

down to the last detail’ and during

the launch weekend, existing Citroën

customers who purchased the new

model were rewarded with free

service credits.Jardine Cycle & Carriage launched the latest Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster at Singapore’s new event venue of ‘Gardens By the Bay’.

People Inspire People at the Jardine Matheson Group

From its earliest days, people

have been a key driving force

behind the success of the Jardine

Matheson Group. Beginning with

the partnership of founders William

Jardine and James Matheson over 180

years ago, the Group has prospered

and endured on building strong

relationships in business and in

attracting and retaining the right

people with the ability to innovate,

inspire and succeed in the face of

often challenging and changing

market conditions.

Whether a frontline worker, a

business manager or a managing

director, the Jardine Matheson

Group prides itself on offering its

370,000 employees excellent career

opportunities and the potential to

realize their individual aspirations.

The fact that it is one of Asia’s most

dynamic and successful companies

both attracts and helps the Group to

retain the best talent.

“People inspire people,” said Group

Managing Director Ben Keswick,

“and across the Group we value

having the ‘Right People’ in place

helping to drive our businesses

forward and inspire others around

them. We recognize the qualities and

talents of those working within our

organizations and help them realize

their potential through personal

growth. Just as importantly, we

highlight the need to support them

along the way.”

The Group’s strong investment in

people development encourages

employees to view Jardines as

joining a community for a career,

rather than a company for a job

and this is reflected in the low

turnover of staff, particularly in its

graduate trainee schemes. A unique

mentoring scheme for executive

trainees and the sense of community

created by organizations like Jardine

Sports Association and the Jardine

Ambassadors who act as advocates

for the Group’s MINDSET mental

health programme, all serve to

generate a sense of belonging.

Longstanding values of respect and

integrity are also important elements

that make people choose to work for

Jardines and then stay.

“Throughout our history we have

fostered the highest standards

of professionalism and technical

expertise, along with the values of

our founders,” said Mr Keswick.

“These include a collegial spirit

that means helping one another to

succeed, the entrepreneurial flair to

take calculated risks to drive growth,

and enthusiasm and pride in doing

a job well. At Jardines we value

performance and we believe that peak

performance is best achieved through

having the Right People.”The sense of community within the Jardine Matheson Group is created by organizations like the Jardine Ambassadors – seen here in their role as advocates for MINDSET celebrating Chinese New Year with residents of MINDSET Place care home.

Graduate trainees joining the Jardine Matheson Group can aspire to a long-term career offering excellent opportunities.

Developing Our People

Within the Jardine Matheson Group,

‘People Development’ covers all

aspects of recruitment and retention

along with elements such as job

rotation, succession and career

planning. It is divided into two

main areas; Group Leadership

Development, which focuses on

the growth of senior leadership

across the Group, and Business

Unit Training activities customized

to meet the needs of individual

operations. At every level, there

is a strong emphasis on linking

people to performance, with training

and development viewed as a key

business process.

“Group Leadership Development

activities leverage the diversity of

people and industry and concentrate

on the development of ‘general

management’ capabilities such

as leadership, strategy, finance,

marketing, and HR,” explained

Group Head of Human Resources

Ritchie Bent. “Business Unit Training

activities include the development of

industry specific skills for frontline

workers such as customer service

and supervisory and technical

skills, along with management and

leadership programmes designed

around each industry’s particular

requirements and demands.”

Growing Leaders

The Group’s Leadership

Development strategy centres

around Jardines’ Leadership

Development Model: ‘Diagnose-

Develop-Apply’, with the emphasis

on giving people skills and attributes

for the future, rather than only for

the present.

“Underpinned by a set of

competencies, the ‘Diagnose-

Develop-Apply’ model has played

an integral role in the development

of much of the Group’s senior

management and many of our CEOs

today,” said Mr Bent.

Diagnose-Develop-Apply

Diagnose: Up to 250 junior to mid-

level managers annually attend a

Development Centre where they

are placed in a situation, which

simulates two levels higher than

their actual position. Benchmarked

against what is known as the ‘5-P

Competency Model’ of Purpose,

Process & Systems Thinking,

Performance, People and Personal,

assessors are able to identify how

far people are away from being able

to operate at such a level, and what

needs to be done to accelerate their

progress towards it.

Develop: Starting with the Group’s

graduate trainee schemes,

leadership development reaches

up to the most senior management

positions. Three core programmes

in this process are the Senior

Executive Programme (SEP), targeting

mid-level managers, the Business

Enhancement Initiative (BEI) for

upper mid-level managers, and the

Director Development Initiative

(DDI), which is designed for senior

directors. In addition the Group has

just launched an in-house MSc in

Advanced Leadership Practice in

conjunction with Napier University

in Edinburgh. This is a powerful and

innovative two-year programme

aimed at equipping key management

professionals with the skills, insight

and capacity to meet the challenges

and opportunities of the future.

Development programmes have

results of these are subsequently

presented to participants’ respective

Creating CEOs for the Future

Graduates entering the Group’s

graduate trainee programmes – the

Jardine Executive Trainee Scheme

(JETS) and the China Management

Trainee Scheme (CMTS) – are hand-

picked annually from thousands of

applicants and then nurtured and

developed into business leaders of

the future.

“Where these schemes are unique

is that these graduates are recruited

with the specific objective of them

running a business, as a CEO,

within 10-15 years,” explained

Mr Bent. “As a consequence, the

selection, development and retention

methodologies differ from other

such schemes, which tend to hire

graduates to produce ‘managers’,

rather than top-level leaders.”

One example is that the graduates

are compelled to qualify as Chartered

Management Accountants (CIMA)

with the rationale that to run a

business at the highest levels,

requires a strong understanding

of finance and is

a critical senior

leadership capability.

The success of the

Group’s current graduate

trainee programme,

which is in its 14th

year, is evident in the

numbers of participants

who now lead Group

businesses across the

Region. In 2012, seven

Jardine graduates were

promoted into Managing

Director roles, whilst several others

assumed senior management roles.

Amongst these were Ben Birks who

joined the programme in 2000 and

was appointed Managing Director of

Jardine Pacific last April; Vivien Lau

who is currently Managing Director of

HACIS and was also a JET from 2000;

Wilson Kwong, a trainee from 1998 who

was named Managing Director of JEC

in April; and Naresh Kalani, another

JET since 2000 and now a Director of

Jardine Schindler, Singapore.

“Our graduate trainee programmes

provide a unique career opportunity

unmatched by any other company

in Asia,” added Ben Keswick.

“Through work placements and daily

challenges, participants’ ability to

lead is tested and strengthened.

They experience a unique level

of mentorship from our senior

executives and then end up doing

something many others of their

age won’t be: leading a prestigious

brand in Asia.”

Ben Birks who joined the JETS programme in 2000 and is seen here on a community visit to Tuen Mun Hospital, was appointed Managing Director of Jardine Pacific in 2012.

Participants in the Director Development Initiative for senior directors, which is now in its 13th year, study businesses and leaders around the globe during visits such as this one to Dubai.

senior executive teams with the

objective of providing tangible

examples of change. Another

important component is the study of

businesses and leaders outside the

Group. For example, the DDI, which

is now in its 13th year, has visited

over 200 companies globally, and

met almost as many CEOs.

“A crucial element of all the

Group Leadership Development

programmes is a clear link to

business improvement,” said

Mr Bent. “Everything starts with

the business need and cascades

down from that.”

Building the Best People

Across the Group, many businesses

have established highly innovative and

effective training and development

initiatives. These range from the

training of frontline staff and the

development of both technical and

management talent to nurturing the

next generation of leaders.

Astra’s Integrated Approach Leads in Indonesia

As one of Indonesia’s largest

employers, Astra regards training and

development for its 185,000 staff as

an investment, rather than a cost. In

particular, its integrated approach for

managerial level employees has set

new industry benchmarks.

This begins with the Astra Basic

Management Program and

progresses through middle and

general management programmes

to culminate in the Astra Advanced

Executive Program. Project assignments

and job rotation also play a key role.

“Our focus is on talent development

so that we ensure we have the right

people working for us,” said President

Director Prijono Sugiarto. “This

approach helps us to achieve our

world-class standards in operations

and governance and enhances

our strong national pride and

corporate culture.”

Fast Track Recognition for JEC Management Training

A management trainee programme

introduced by Jardine Engineering

Corporation (JEC) in 2006, which

targeted engineering graduates

from Hong Kong and overseas,

has received recognition from the

Hong Kong Institution of Engineers

(HKIE). Following completion of the

programme, graduates can now ‘fast

track’ their application to become

chartered engineers and apply four

years earlier than their peers in

other companies.

One of the key characteristics of the

programme is a 24-month rotational

process, whereby the graduates

work in different departments,

including overseas.

“The recognition from the HKIE

reflects the quality of our people

and what we have achieved with our

trainee programme,” said JEC CEO

Wilson Kwong. “It also demonstrates

JEC’s commitment to ‘engineering a

better Asia’.”

Dairy Farm Singapore Framework Supports Excellence

Dairy Farm Singapore’s training and

development framework enables the

company to develop the necessary

people capabilities and create a

pipeline of successors to meet

business expansion, which in the last

decade has seen the number of stores

grow from 357 to 844.

As part of the framework,

which supports four key areas of

excellence – Operations, Service,

People, and Category – 20 outstanding

junior executives are selected annually

Astra President Director Prijono Sugiarto addresses a training session on the group’s corporate philosophy, ‘Catur Dharma’, which forms an integral part of its people development programme.

Completion of JEC’s management trainee programme fast tracks graduates in their application to become chartered engineers and is helping the group ‘to engineer a better Asia’.

Page 21: Thistle - Jardine Matheson Chang also had the privilege of a private audience with the President who was accompanied by his Ministers of Trade, Energy and Mineral Resources, Tourism,

to participate in an intensive 10-month

‘Talent Development Programme’

(TDP). On completion, around two

thirds of the executives are placed into

larger roles.

“Retail is a highly competitive

industry,” said Dairy Farm South Asia

Regional Director Alex Tay. “Initiatives

such as the TDP give us an edge and

differentiate us from our competitors.”

Higher Achievements for Pizza Hut Hong Kong Managers

Most restaurant managers join Pizza

Hut straight from school and many

have risen to be effective business

leaders in spite of not having a strong

academic background. However,

the lack of a tertiary education has

often inhibited their prospects of

further promotion.

“These key programmes have been

instrumental in driving colleague

engagement and fulfilling our passion

for guest satisfaction, whilst developing

talent for the future growth of MOHG,”

said Chief Executive Edouard Ettedgui.

JLT Invests in Leadership Excellence

In line with its belief that a company’s

greatest asset is its leaders, Jardine

Lloyd Thompson (JLT) implemented

an innovative International Senior

Management Programme (ISMP)

aimed at developing talent and

leadership excellence.

Now in its fourth year, the 10-day

programme takes 24 senior managers

across JLT’s global operations and

focuses on improving their individual

strengths while deepening their

approach to collaboration. This is

supported by a long-term bespoke

development programme for each

participant.

“JLT’s investment in the ISMP reflects

our strategic vision and commercial

goals,” said CEO Dominic Burke. “As

well as honing specialist skills, JLT

aspires to extend its international

reach and expand from 7,500 to 10,000

staff in 33 countries over the next

three to five years.”

Dairy Farm’s professional training and development programmes give employees the necessary capabilities and enable the group to meet business expansion needs.

A customized Higher Diploma in Business Administration offers Pizza Hut Hong Kong restaurant managers the opportunity to achieve even higher career goals.

To address this issue, Pizza Hut

Hong Kong has established a Higher

Diploma in Business Administration,

a three-year customized programme

run by the Institute of Vocational

Education, which can also be taken to

degree level, if so desired.

“The Diploma course really boosted

my confidence levels,” said Pizza Hut

Hong Kong Senior Assistant Manager

Ocean Yiu. “I am now more positive in

tough situations and able to use my

time and resources more effectively.”

Key Programmes Help Mandarin Oriental to Realize Vision

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s

(MOHG) vision to be the best luxury

hotel group in the world is highly

dependent on having the right people,

in the right jobs, with the right skills,

at the right time.

To achieve this aim, three key

programmes have been developed –

MOve In, a highly participative

orientation programme; MOve Up, a six-

month programme comprising modular

classroom training, assignments, team

building and workplace activities; and

MOve Forward, a 14-month programme,

developing skills critical to departmental

leadership and business goals.

Hong Kong Green Awards 2012,

which aim to recognize businesses

with outstanding performance in

green management, purchasing

and governance.

Gammon earned the award for

its efforts in engaging the supply

and promoting the use of green

materials. This included a

Sustainable Procurement Policy,

trade workshops on sustainable

procurement and discussions

with suppliers and subcontractors

on green and recycled products.

One example, following two

years of research to identify and

develop appropriate suppliers,

was the setting up of sustainable

timber procurement guidelines

referencing the Forest Stewardship

Council (FSC) for FSC-certified

timber and plywood.

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals

Limited’s (Hactl) excellence across

the board has been recognized with

several recent awards.

For the sixth year running, Hactl

was named ‘Air Cargo Terminal of

the Year’ at the Supply Chain Asia

Logistics Awards 2012. These were

CENTRAL Rat Race Breaks Another Record for MINDSET

More than 460 participants completed

the course of the seventh annual

CENTRAL Rat Race, raising a record

HK$2.65 million (US$341,607)

for MINDSET.

The ‘Rat Race Cup’ was won by the

team from Hong Kong Exchanges and

Clearing Limited, while for the fourth

consecutive year, Craig Shute from

CB Richard Ellis took home the ‘Big

Rat Cup’ for being the fastest senior

executive. Sylvie Emma Keswick won

the ‘Junior Rat Cup’ as the fastest ‘Kid

representatives from local NGOs pair

up to compete for the prize, went to

Castle Peak Hospital.

“All of us at MINDSET are grateful

to be the beneficiary of this event

for the seventh consecutive year,”

said MINDSET Chairman and

Jardine Matheson Group Managing

Director Ben Keswick.

“CENTRAL Rat Race is a

terrific platform to raise

awareness of the good

work mental health

organizations do in Hong

China, as well as the

importance of maintaining

work-life balance in such

a fast-paced business

Workshops Equip Student Advocates for Health in Mind Programme

Two workshops have been conducted

to help equip student advocates

participating in the Health in Mind

programme with the necessary

knowledge and skills to interact with

people suffering or recovered from

mental illnesses.

Students from the ten new schools

in the 2012-14 programme learnt the

important facts of mental illness at

a workshop conducted by Francis

Woo, Senior Nursing Officer of Kwai

Chung Hospital. This was followed by

a visit to facilities inside the hospital

such as the Patient Resources and

Social Centre and various wards,

which gave the students a deeper

understanding of the support

provided by a psychiatric hospital

to those suffering or recovered

from mental illnesses and the skills

training available to assist them to

reintegrate into the community.

At another workshop

for Health in Mind

students in their second

year of the programme,

United Christian

Nethersole Community

Health Service Clinical

Psychologist Carol Yew

addressed students on

‘Positive Psychology’.

Through various

interactive activities,

which included the

evaluation of one’s

‘Happiness Index’ and the

making of a newspaper

shoe rack, participants were asked to

identify their level of happiness and

related factors affecting happiness.

Meanwhile, over 100 students were

rewarded for their high participation in

the first year of the 2011-13 programme

with a tour of the world-class air cargo

handling centre, SuperTerminal 1,

operated by Hong Kong Air Cargo

Terminals Limited (Hactl). The

students experienced the different

aspects of the cargo handling facilities

such as the cargo acceptance, release

and storage areas, as well as the

airport apron.

have recovered from a mental illness

to help others who are undergoing

similar problems.

The ‘MINDSET Peer Support Worker

Project’ has launched its first training

course in collaboration with four

agencies – Baptist Oi Kwan Social

Service, Caritas – Hong Kong, The

Mental Health Association of Hong

Kong, and New Life Psychiatric

Rehabilitation Association – setting

a new milestone for psychiatric

rehabilitation in Hong Kong.

“The initiative is consistent with

the global trend emphasizing the

empowerment of consumers and

the growing attention to recovery-

oriented services,” explained

Sania Yau, Chairperson, MINDSET

Peer Support Worker Project

Steering Committee.

The 19 service users who were selected

for the inaugural training course from

over 100 applicants will undergo 100

hours of training to become a Peer

Support Worker. Level One of the

course will deal with basic knowledge

and concepts and skills, which will

include generic training jointly provided

by the collaborating agencies, while

Level Two will focus on job-related

skills training along with job-specific

training and practice learning tailored

by the individual agency.

divided into 20 teams and given

ten hypotheses, relating to specific

facets of Macau that supposedly

inhibited growth. Having been given

some tools, the teams subsequently

got out into the field, visiting

businesses, interviewing people and

conducting various forms of research.

Their objective was to either confirm

or refute their respective hypothesis,

using hard evidence to support their

claims. Their findings were then

challenged by the visiting CEOs, and

conclusions drawn as to where the

inhibitors of business growth lay, and

how these could be overcome.

ENTERPRISE AT WORK... Jardine Engineering Corporation

A customer-focused strategy underpinned by teamwork at

all levels has been the driving factor in Jardine Engineering

Corporation’s (JEC) successful growth of business at Hong

Kong International Airport over the last decade. From a

single baggage security system contract in 2001, JEC has

built a relationship with the Hong Kong Airport Authority

(AA) into an excellent ongoing partnership. Today this

represents a significant business, making the AA one of

JEC’s top customers.

“JEC set a long-term goal of developing the relationship into

a key account and sustainable major revenue stream based

on our team’s unwavering focus on understanding the

AA’s needs, and a dedication to exceeding expectations,”

explained C K Tam, Operations Director, Electrical &

consistently to become a trusted partner of the AA and as

this trust has grown so has the portfolio of systems that

we maintain.”

This portfolio has included over 80% market share of

the major upgrades of Hong Kong International Airport’s

which is at the core of the facility’s operations, as well as

ongoing maintenance of specialized heavy machinery such

as the aircraft loading bridge systems, for which JEC was

a hall that is approximately four football

fields in size split over two levels, consisting

of over 10km of conveyor belts that

interconnect with over 400 check-in counters

with more than 40 X-ray screening machines,

and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

tracking systems,” said Mr Tam.

Dealing with this level of complexity required JEC to assemble

and co-ordinate teams of, at times, over 100 different types

of specialist engineers, while fostering a strong spirit of

teamwork and can-do attitude in order to deliver innovative

solutions. These included the challenges of implementing

new technologies without compromising reliability such as

the introduction of the RFID tagging and vertical sorting units

that save space and operate more efficiently.

“Our partnership with the AA represents what JEC is

good at: providing an effective and dedicated direct

customer interface, the ability to juggle multiple projects,

and satisfying demanding customers in challenging

environments,” said Mr Tam. “These types of projects

require more from the frontline teams but provide an

excellent business model.”

As the partnership continues to grow, the JEC team is in a

strong position to develop the business further by using

its understanding of the AA’s requirements to leverage and

adapt the team’s expertise and consistently deliver results.

“We have successfully created a financially strong

and sustainable business in its own right that is

based on a strong foundation of partnership and trust

through performance,” added Mr Tam. “In turn, this

has reinforced JEC’s position as a leading provider of

complex E&M solutions in the most demanding critical

facility environments.”
