THE HEALING LANDSCAPEARCH 301FALL 2013

The concept of landscape is important to any design, however this design opportunity is often overlooked. This site was located in a large field, deep within the Iowa countryside. This field presents three large rolling hills from the north and west, and dense wooded area on the east and south. The retreat will be placed in the threshold that connects these two very different topographic conditions.

This retreat center was designed around the principle of freedom. Our clients are faced with constant chronological stress, i.e. deadlines, work hours. Our retreat center answered with two distinctive room types with various levels of privacy and isolation. The program of use also remained flexible and provided a

variety of different healing methods such as meditation and healthy habits.7

THE HOLLYHOCK HOUSEFRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

LOS ANGELES, CA1921

After researching the architectural methods of Frank Lloyd Wright, we were then given the task to create a scale model of one of his buildings, The Hollyhock House. With Frank Lloyd Wright’s distinct attention to detail, we had much to prove in this model. Finished in 1921, this home was covered in small stained glass windows, featured accentuating courtyards and was lined with detailed carvings relating back to the Mayans. Considered to be among one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s finest works, the Hollyhock House still stands today. 12

ALTERNATIVE HOUSING ARCH 302

SPRING 201413

Page 15: Thomas Thatcher Architecture Portfolio

Nestled in the center of one of the most historical districts of Manhattan, SoHo holds some of the most prestigious studios and lofts in the world. In a place that holds such a high ego for fashion, art, and architecture, a unique design opportunity is presented. Selecting a unique client style, and pairing them with a designed program and purpose, can create an architecture that is both unique and beneficial to the district. We chose an alternative lifestyle of urban nomads, or people who devote their life to travel and short-term living experiences. While the reasoning behind the decisions to become nomadic vary, one thing holds true, this specific client is doing something for the greater good.

GOOD+WILLURBAN WINERY - SOHO, NEW YORK

Our alternative housing project combined a short-term living option, paired with a cultural

employment opportunity to provide a place for these people to call home. The Urban Winery celebrates

New York’s rich wine production, while paying homage to the creative arts and culture of SoHo.

VINOUnknown to many, New York is one of the United States highest wine producers. Wine is a cultural staple in todays social society. Regarded to many as a luxury, wine has the opportunity to be paired with architecture. Good+Will combines residence and retail in a unique way. Creating an environment that encourages positive social behavior, by offering employment opportunities to the community and residents.

RIVERSIDE DWELLINGEASTERN IOWA ARCH 201

Located on a stream near the Mississippi River, the Riverside Dwelling was a residential project with a unique set of requirements. The project was set for a client that resides on the river for a majority of the time. A kitchen, bedroom, and all of the basic living necessities are jam packed into just 2000 sq ft. Added to this, utilizing the steep grade to allow for a storage garage underneath, housing two kayaks or canoes, along with equipment with ease. The culture and community of the Eastern Iowa riverside is unlike any other, the architecture can embrace that uniqueness with effective design and high regard to the site and context.
