PROLOGUEThread of Lies, adapted from the Kim Ryeo-ryeong (the author of Punch) novel of the same name, deals
with the aftermath of a 14-year-old-girl’s suicide. The nonlinear narrative follows her mother and sister
as they struggle to cope with her death and gradually unravel the mystery behind her decision to take
her life.
SYNOPSISHyeon-sook (Kim Hee-ae) is a single mother raising two teenage daughters while working at a grocery
store. One day, her youngest child, 14-year-old Cheon-ji (Kim Hyang-gi), suddenly commits suicide
without even leaving a note. This comes as a shock to Hyeon-sook and her older daughter Man-ji (Go
Ah-sung) since Cheon-ji was a sweet child, who rarely complained and studied hard, while always trying
to comfort her hardworking mother. Struggling to understand why Cheon-ji chose to kill herself, the two
women wonder whether there was something they didn’t know about Cheon-ji’s life. As Hyeon-sook
and Man-ji unravel Cheon-ji’s quiet life, they come to realize that she had been the victim of brutal
bullying at her middle school, led by Hwa-yeon (Kim Yoo-jung), a troubled, manipulative teenager.
PRODUCTION NOTE
AUTHOR KIM RYEO-RYEONG AND DIRECTOR LEE HAN’S SECOND COLLABORATION
Kim and Lee appealed to a wide range of moviegoers in 2011 with their first film Punch. The
coming-of-age drama depicting serious social issues of multicultural families and education in South
Korea attracted more than 5 million moviegoers. Kim and Lee have joined forces once again and return to
the big screen with Thread of Lies.
“Thread of Lies offer a deeper emotional experience than Punch and will allow the viewers to
empathize fully with the characters,” said Lee. “I wanted to portray a realistic story that would catch the
audience off guard.”
THREAD OF LIES BOASTS A STAR-STUDDED FEMALE ENSEMBLE OF KIM HEE-AE, GO AH-SUNG, KIM
YOO-JUNG, AND KIM HYANG-KI. YOO AH-IN AND SUNG DONG-IL ROUND-OUT THE TALENTED CAST
Thread of Lies shows off an ensemble cast of top actresses, whose roles have transcended generations
of Korean cinema. The harmony of this ensemble not only brought the story to life but imbued it with
laughter and sensitivity. Kim Hee-ae, who is enjoying a reinvigorated career on television program such
as Sisters Over Flowers, is returning to the silver screen after a 21-year hiatus. Go Ah-Sung (star of The
Host and Snowpiercer) is also onboard as a seemingly indifferent older sister role. Kim Hyang-gi, who is
nicknamed “the acting genius,” portrays Cheon-ji, a teenager whose thoughts run deeper than most of
her friends. Kim Yoo-jung, who appears to be Cheon-ji’s best friend, plays a major role in causing the
events leading up to Cheon-ji’s death. These blossoming teen actresses threaten to steal every scene
with their raw talent.
Not to be outdone by this all-star female cast, Yoo Ah-in and Sung Dong-il bring their warmth and
charisma to the screen. Yoo Ah-in plays Chu Sang-bak, a suspicious neighbor who is studying for the civil
service exam. Sung Dong-il plays Man-ho, Hyun-sook’s admirer. The film is packed with passionate
performances which are sure to captivate any audience.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
LEE HAN
“When I read this novel for the first time, I started to think about those people who I haven’t been
paying much attention to. I hope that this film motivates people to think about those who surround
them. After watching the film, I want people remember to say a kind word to their friends and family
every once in a while.”
Director Lee Han debuted in 2002 with Lover’s Concerto, which starred Cha Tae-hyeon, Son Ye-jin, and
the late Lee Eun-joo. He received critical acclaim for Almost Love, which showed the beauty of a young
couple full of life and energy. With My Love, he depicted romance between different couples and was
praised for his ability to capture varied and deep emotions on screen. Afterwards, Lee’s films moved on
from romance to focusing on social issues and family. In 2011, his film Punch drew over 5 million viewers,
who were captivated by its quirky characters. Thread of Lies is Lee’s first work in over three years and
tells the story of those left behind to deal with the aftermath of a young girl’s death. The profound
