The Window Company(Contracts) has become oneof the first businesses to signup to the brand new ‘GoodBusiness Charter’, which hasbeen launched to encour-age better business practicein the UK.

Backed by both the CBI andthe TUC, the new Charter isthe brainchild of RicherSounds boss and ethical entre-preneur Julian Richer. It will ac-credit only those companiesthat can prove they treat theirstaff, customers and supplierswell. For The Window Com-pany (Contracts), a commer-cial installer, it is the perfectfit. Chairman David Thorntonexplains: “We have built asuccessful business on the very

principles which underpin thisnew charter – from paying areal living wage to our staff, topaying our suppliers promptly.“Businesses who sign up haveto satisfy 10 key criteria onthings like their commitment toemployee representation andwell being, ethical sourcingand paying fair tax – and wehave done that with ease.”

Bad boys don’t winThornton continues: “Cus-tomers care more than everabout who they are doingbusiness with and employeescare about who they work for,so demonstrating our ethicalcredentials can only be agood thing.

“The bad boys in this indus-

try tend to grab the headlineswhen in fact there are manymore responsible businesseslike ourselves quietly and con-fidently doing the right thingand being successful as a re-sult. I’d like to see lots morebusinesses and organisationssigning up to try to redress thatbalance.”

Alongside The WindowCompany (Contracts) andRicher Sounds, founding mem-bers of the Good BusinessCharter include BromptonBicycles, London City Airportand Deloitte.

Morley Glass & Glazing’slatest innovation is a new andimproved App that allowsusers to open and close theirelectronic integral blinds froma tablet or smartphone fromanywhere in the world.

Morley Glass & Glazing hasstriven to be at the forefrontof technological developmentswithin the fenestration industry –and this new App clearlymarks the company out as aninnovator. The development wasprompted after the business wasinundated with requests fromcustomers. As integral blindscontinue to increase in popular-ity with homeowners who enjoythe practical solution they pro-vide for doors and windows, agrowing demand for an Appbased control option was to beexpected.

Fingertip controlDeveloped by DV Smarthomes inassociation with Loxone, the newApp allows the user to simplyselect the blind they wish to oper-

ate then swipe their finger in thedirection of the blind i.e. open, close or tilt. Both venetian andpleated blinds can be perfectlycontrolled. The blinds can alsobe programmed to automaticallycome down to stop solar gains ifthe room gets too hot.

With this new App, ownerscan operate their blinds wher-ever they have access to Wi-Fi –no matter if they are on the otherside of town or the other side ofthe world.

Temperature controlledas wellIn fact, the technology allowsblinds and shading to virtuallylook after themselves. In the sum-mer, the blinds can be pro-grammed to prevent overheatingby closing automatically when aroom reaches a set temperature, while in the winter, when many ofus leave for work and arrive homein the dark, blinds can be set toopen when the sun comes up andclose automatically at dusk.

The App can also be pro-

grammed to include a ‘holidaymode’ for daily automatic open-ing and closing of blinds whilehomeowners are away, simulat-ing the effect of someone beinghome. This provides added secu-rity and peace of mind.

New and retro-fitMorley Glass & Glazing’s fullyelectronic or motorised MB Sys-tem Uni-Blinds already offerhomeowners convenience byopening, closing and tilting atthe press of a button. But by inte-grating them into the LoxoneApp, blinds can now be oper-ated from anywhere via smart-phones or tablet, with the usualoption to synchronise multiplewindows or doors in the sameroom to operate simultaneously.

The App is available for imme-diate installation into MBSystems, including retrofittinginto previous projects.

All of Morley Glass &Glazing’s sealed units withintegral blinds inside (regardlessof how they are operated) are in-stalled in the same way as a nor-mal sealed unit. The motorisedMB System comes fully wiredand tested so it’s just a matter ofconnecting one wire per windowto the mains. Fitting instructionsare supplied, and installationvideos are also available on theMorley Glass website andYouTube channel.

LoxoneWith the growth of homeautomation systems, it is increas-ingly common that homeownerswant to integrate the operationof their motorised integral blindsinto their electric-powered homeautomation systems. A LoxoneMiniserver, which acts as themain brain of a Loxone systemand the central point of controlfor home and building automa-tion, can accommodate up to 30extensions.

I often inspect installationsand conservatory buildswhere the surveyor from thewindow company has notconsidered the aspect of anexposed elevation, writes TheInstaller's technical expert,Don Waterworth.

All Fenestration Surveyorsmust be aware that any eleva-tions facing a South or South-West aspect, particularly whenthe aspect is an open or theproperty is elevated and ex-posed, then special careshould be taken with regardsto specifying products.

A different kettleFurthermore, installers must alsobe on their guard as fitting win-dows to a South-West elevationon an elevated farmhouse on

the Pennines, is a different kettleof fish than fitting windows on aNorth facing elevation in a val-ley in the Cotswolds. The per-formance requirements arecompletely different.

Take a look at the photo-graph here and note how thefriction stay is showing rust.

This was on a South facingopen aspect north of Bolton. The windows were also 1stfloor windows, meaning thatthese windows were destinedto accept the prevailing south-westerly winds and rain com-mon in the UK. Add to theaspect, windows slightly ‘intwist’ and therefore allowingwind driven rain to bypass thesash gaskets...and you havean irate consumer.

Get rust free fittingsYou either need to specify theaspect to your supplier or ifyour supplier will not guaran-tee rust free fittings, than makethis known to your customers.Either way, take care with yoursurveys and be clear on the as-pect expectations with regardsto weather exposure.Don

The Health & Safety Column

Stan England Builders Limitedhas been fined following anincident when a worker suf-fered serious injuries afterfalling from a mezzanine leveland wooden platform.

Aberdeen Sheriff Court heardthat on 31 March 2016, AlanNess was working at a residen-tial property in Banchory. Hebegan taping areas on the ceilingof a mazzine level. He gained ac-cess to this level by a woodenplatform which had a ladderpropped against it. As he wasworking close to the edge of themezzanine level, he lost his foot-ing and stumbled a drop of18.5cm onto the wooden plat-form. He was unable to regain hisfooting and fell a further 2.5 me-tres head first onto the floorbelow. He sustained head, backand neck injuries.

An investigation by the Healthand Safety Executive (HSE) foundthat there was no edge protectionon the wooden platform and nosafe system of work had been putin place. Mr Ness had receivedno formal training for work atheight or working on ladders andhe had a lack of knowledge andawareness of the hazards associ-ated with work at height.

Stan England Builders hadfailed to supervise appropriatelyand had not corrected deficien-cies and there was no written riskassessments for this task.

The company pleaded guilty tobreaching Regulation 6(3) of theWork at Height Regulations 2005and was fined £6,000.

After the hearing, HSE inspec-

tor, Connor Gibson said: “Thosein control of work have a respon-sibility to devise safe methods ofworking and to provide the nec-essary information, instructionand training to their workers inthe safe system of working. Fallsfrom height remain one of themost common causes of work-re-lated fatalities in this country andthe risks associated with workingat height are well known. In thiscase a different and simple ap-proach of using edge protectionon the wooden platform couldhave prevented the life changinginjuries sustained by the em-ployee.”

Surrey metal fabricator finedafter girl crushed by steelgate at primary schoolA manufacturer of bespoke gateshas been fined after an eight-year-old girl was crushed by a steelgate at a London school.

Westminster Magistrates’ Courtheard that on 17 May 2018 thegirl had been leaving an eveninggymnastics club at the school inStreatham. when the sliding gatefell on her. She suffered multiplefractures to her pelvis as well asinternal injuries.

The manual sliding gate, whichis more than five metres long and1.7 metres high, was designed, manufactured and fitted byMetalart Fabrication Limited.

However, an investigation bythe HSE found that the mecha-nism in place to prevent the slid-ing gate from overrunning andfalling over as it was opened (asmall stop welded to its guidingrail) was insufficient if the gatewas opened robustly.

Metalart Fabrication pleadedguilty to breaching Section6(1)(a) of the Health and Safetyat Work etc Act 1974. The com-pany was fined £19,327, in-cluding full costs of £1,147 anda victim surcharge of £180.

Speaking after the hearing,HSE inspector Sarah Whittlesaid: “The failure to fit suitableend-stops meant that the gatewas an accident waiting to hap-pen and could have fallen onanyone at any time with lifethreatening consequences.” i

Orkla has opted for smartliquid crystal windows at itsnew Oslo headquarters –Orkla City – to maximiseenergy efficiency ambitionsfor the development.

The Norwegian consumergoods supplier selected therecently developed Eyrisedynamic liquid crystal windowsfor solar shading for the cafeteriaterrace facade at Orkla City, enabling staff to enjoy continuousvisual and thermal comfort with-out the need for excessive air con-ditioning and blinds.

LicrivisionOrkla partnered with building firmSkanska Norge, Norwegianarchitects NSW Arkitektur andStaticus, the facade engineeringcompany on the design andconstruction of the 82sq.m facadeon the fifth floor of the building, installing 23 rectangular windowpanels of seven different sizes.

Advanced Licrivision liquid crys-tal technology enables Eyrise win-dows to darken and lighteninstantaneously. It works using sen-sors and can be controlled

through the building managementsystem. The glass always remainsa transparent neutral grey colourwhen tinted, so natural light is pre-served even when the windowsare in a darkened state and theview to the outside is retained.

Comfort“Eyrise windows give us a seam-less adjustment of light and tem-perature while reducing ourenergy costs. Meetings can aseasily happen on the sofa in thecanteen as in a conference room,so staff can work in comfort,” con-tinued Gjert Brun.

BREEAM excellentDesigned by NSW Arkitektur, the25,000sq.m Orkla City multi-height commercial project consistsof an office building with 16 floorssuitable for 1,000 employees. The building is classified energylevel ‘A’ and has applied for aBREEAM excellent certificate.“Architects love to work with glassfacades but also need to considersustainability and the impact onoccupants,” said Marco Orlandi, architect at NSW Arkitektur.

“Orkla is a forward-looking com-pany that is using on demand solarcontrol technology to increase light-wellness for its staff, all while con-sidering the environment.”

EyriseEyrise Dynamic Liquid CrystalWindows is a product from sci-ence and technology companyMerck which provide lightwell-ness – visual comfort, thermal reg-ulation and colour neutrality – foroccupants on demand, whilehelping to reduce energy con-sumption. Architects and buildingdesigners worldwide use Eyrise tocreate bespoke glass structuresand facades in a large variety ofshapes, sizes and colours. Recentprojects include BAFTA’s head-quarters in London, Orkla City inOslo, Merck’s conference centrein Darmstadt and Techne Spherein Leipzig designed by modern ar-chitecture pioneer OscarNiemeyer.

Following the launch of theClimate Emergency DesignGuide from the London En-ergy Transformation Initiative(LETI) Rehau is highlightingthe ongoing initiatives inPVC-U technology that willeffectively contribute to anumber of the guide’s actionpoints.

With a clear sustainabilityagenda at its core, Rehau hascreated a business that developsenergy-efficient solutions withminimal environmental impact, demonstrated via robust lifecycleassessments and investment intoa subsidiary window recyclingcompany.

Lifecycle assessments“And, while the media attentioncommanded by the world’s sin-gle-use plastic crisis is certainlywarranted,” says Rehau CEOMartin Hitchin, “it is imperativethat we continue to make the dis-tinction between componentsused in our daily lives versusthose integral to the foundationsof our built environment.

“We have always taken lifecy-

cle assessments seriously atRehau and as a result our envi-ronmental impact is proportion-ately lower than that of rawmaterials. This is due to high en-ergy costs demanded for produc-tion and extraction of rawmaterials, as well as logisticalconsiderations relating to trans-port and fuel costs.

“For example, while the meritsof PVC-U windows have longbeen acknowledged, the circulareconomy of such products is alsocrucial in the context of climatechange. This is why we haveimplemented a closed material

cycle, conserved naturalresources and reduced CO2emissions, with the percentageof profiles produced using recy-cled material rising from 25%to over 40% since 2014 – andset to increase to 50% nextyear.

Applied responsibly“In summary, we at Rehau are

committed to relieving the bur-den on our environment, andthoroughly agree with the mes-sage sent by the LETI ClimateEmergency Design Guide. It isimportant that developers, landowners, designers, policy-makers, and the wider supplychain are fully aware of thevalue that PVC-U can bring whenapplied responsibly.”

The new residential aluminium windowsystem from Garnalex – Sheerline Classic –has passed the PAS24:2016 security test withflying colours.

A maximum sized double side hung Sheerlinewindow successfully passed both mechanical andmanipulation tests with no issues at all.

Garnalex asked BSI’s technicians to carry outdestructive testing to see just how strong thewindow system was. The lock side of the windowchieved extraordinary results, withstanding 5kN offorce before the lock failed. This was all the moreimpressive as the window had already been sub-jected to full mechanical and manipulation tests.

Phil Parry (pictured), Sheerline Testing andStandards Director, adds: “Sheerline exceeded therequired loads for PAS24:2016 by more thanthree times, to the amazement of the technical staffcarrying out the testing.

“We’ve designed Sheerline from the ground upto make it easy to fabricate, install and sell. It willalso perform at a much higher level than fabrica-tors and installers are used to. So, we’re pleasedbut not surprised by these security test results.” i

Scott’s Corner

The Installer| Scott’s Corner |27

If there was ever a pivotal yearfor the glass and glazing in-dustry then perhaps 2019 wasthat year writes Andrew Scott,as he looks at how a brand –like Tesla – can rise to the topin a competitive market.

Of course, we weren’t alone –three years of economic uncer-tainty with Brexit, a new PrimeMinister and a general electionhave taken its toll on the econ-omy, consumer confidence andthe housing market.

Meanwhile the glazing industrywas also battling its own demons– an ageing workforce, years ofunder-investment and squeezedmargins as the industry struggledto justify viable pricing levels.

2020 prognosisInevitably, it points to significantchanges for the industry in 2020and beyond, with some suppliersexiting the market or being ab-sorbed by stronger companies, while sadly some well-knownbrands are likely to collapse.

However, it isn’t all bad news. With consolidation comes oppor-tunity for forward-thinking, ambi-tious companies and I suspect wewill see a new wave of acquisi-tions and several new industryleaders emerge. We can’t ignorethe fact that the industry is a£multi-billion market with no sin-gle dominant player.

And the future looks bright too –government and consumer-ledmoves towards a more sustain-able future and net-zero carbonwill enable our industry to evolve, develop new products and re-gain margin – provided the in-dustry doesn’t repeat mistakesfrom the past.

Most exciting periodWe are perhaps entering the

most exciting period for the win-dow, door and conservatory in-dustry and the opportunities tobuild highly successful, profitableand valuable companies havenever been greater.

To realise what is possible, wemay need to look at other markets.

The power of TeslaOn 22nd January, car manufac-turer Tesla hit $100 billion mar-ket value, more than U.S. rivalsFord and General Motors com-bined – despite being the newkid on the block and producing atiny fraction of cars compared tothe giants.

Is it simply because Tesla makeelectric cars? If this was the case, itwould be game-over for Tesla asother manufacturers launch pre-mium EV’s – with the Ford MustangE-Mach, Porsche Taycan andJaguar I-Pace all available this year.

No, Tesla’s recent $100 billionvalue is much more than thepower-train of their vehicles. Andthe glass and glazing industrycould learn a great deal fromTesla.

Tesla stands for something –and so do the people who drivethe cars.

It isn’t just about electric cars –it is about breaking with conven-tion. Tesla is ‘on a mission to ac-celerate the world’s transition tosustainable energy’.

In a few short years, Tesla is ontrack to build one of the world’sstrongest brands. A brand thatreally means something to itscustomers, its employees and itsshareholders.

Tesla isn’t selling cars, it is sell-ing a sustainable future.

Yet, we see all across the glassand glazing industry companiescompeting on product andcompeting on price.

Marketing versus brandingIt generally boils down to market-ing. As an industry, most compa-nies equate marketing to leadgeneration. Without new salesleads, installers don’t have abusiness – and the entire supplychain depends on the installer’sability to convert leads intoorders.

However, the world’s leadingmarketers know that the mostsuccessful, profitable and valu-able companies are built on theirbrand.

Lead generationLead generation is the life-bloodof the glazing industry, yet thosecompanies who also invest intheir brand will ultimately outper-form those that just focus on leadgeneration alone. It’s no surprisethat Tesla had 250,000 pre-or-ders for its dubious Cybertruckwithin a week of launch inNovember 2019 – despite theproduct not being available until2021.

Building a strong brand goesdeeper than just a logo or a newmission statement. It needs toresonate with all stakeholders, from customers and employees tosuppliers – and it needs to beauthentic. A brand is the outwardexpression of a company’spurpose, ethos, values andproposition.

Winner and losersAs the glazing industry consoli-dates and evolves, we will seewinners and losers. Those com-panies who are true innovators, invest in their business and buildmeaningful brands, will emergetriumphant.

Stay SafeAs I write this, the Coronavirus situation seems to be gettingmuch worse. But enough has been written for me not to take upyou valuable time with my spin on it – other than to say staysafe and rest assured, we will come out the other side still doingwhat we all do best.

Better Business PracticeI was pleased to see that The Window Company (Contracts) hasbecome one of the first businesses to sign up to ‘Good BusinessCharter’, which has been launched to encourage better businesspractice in the UK.The Charter will accredit only those companies that can prove theytreat their staff, customers and suppliers well.Treating staff well will be proving difficult in these difficult times but weknow it is the right thing to do in a crisis...and it is the right thing to dowhen there isn’t a crisis.I think when we do get to the other side of the pandemic, we shouldall remember the ‘essential workers’ who kept us going. The deliverydrivers, the shop workers and the carers should all be given a medaland the respect of better wages in the future. The Good Business Charter insists accredited employers pay a realliving wage and pay suppliers promptly as part of a 10 key criteriarating.

Aperture Closing? As we hit the presses, it was announced that Aperture Trading Limitedhad succumbed to administration with KPMG taking the reins.Aperture is the company formed to buy Synseal when that companywent bust. Synseal, produced a range of profile products andconservatory roof systems – including the Global Roof. This will come as another blow just when not needed to the 1,200companies that rely on Aperture as a supplier – and all those thatrelied on Aperture for their jobs..Lead GenerationFENSA has unveiled a ground-breaking new lead generation website, scheduled to go live this April. It will put homeowners who want tobuy from FENSA Approved Installers in touch with FENSA ApprovedInstallers. The service will operate in a similar way to existing online platformsthat are designed to connect tradespeople with customers searchingfor home improvement quotes.Homeowners will not only be able to look for FENSA registeredcompanies in their area, they will also be able to post the job detailsincluding desired materials, products, budget and timeframe.Although I suspect homeowners may be taking a while before theyconfirm any orders in the current situation – hats off to FENSA forstepping up to the plate yet again.
