02 THURSDAY 4 JUNE 2020BUSINESS

Real estate indicators were also affected, as the number of sold properties decreased by 25 percent compared to the previous month and by nearly 40 percent compared to April 2019.

Transportation, restaurants and hotels see largest drop in pricesTHE PENINSULA - DOHA

Qatar’s CPI-based monthly inflation in April declined as a result of fall in general household consumption by 1.3 percent com-pared to the previous year. The fall in the inflation was attributed to COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Of all the sectors, the largest drop in prices occurred in transportation services by 4.85 percent followed by restaurants and hotels with a decrease of 2.51 percent compared to March 2020, official data show.

The Planning and Statistics Authority released yesterday the 76th issue of Qatar Monthly Sta-tistics bulletin.

The new edition observed changes in the indicators of the monthly bulletin due to the impact of the COVID-19 pan-demic on various sectors in Qatar, including a decline in E-gov-ernment Services by nearly half, compared to March 2020.

It has highlighted the most important statistical changes that occurred in the country during

April 2020 in addition to extracts from the results of the 2015 Census.

Several indicators for April 2020 changed; either by going up as noted in the total electricity generated and used (the monthly change was 11.8 percent and 13.1 percent respectively, compared to March 2020) or by going down as witnessed in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) since the general household consumption decreased by 1.33 percent (the largest drop occurred in trans-portation services by 4.85 percent

followed by restaurants and hotels with a decrease of 2.51 percent compared to March 2020).

Real estate indicators were also affected, as the number of sold properties decreased by 25 percent compared to the pre-vious month and by nearly 40 percent compared to April 2019.

With respect to the positive changes, there were a decline in traffic violations by 62 percent compared to the previous month, as well as a drop in traffic accident cases by approximately 40 percent compared to the pre-vious month.

The demographic statistics revealed that the total population of Qatar has increased from 2.772 million during April 2019 to 2.805 million at end of April 2020.

Total electricity consumption during April 2020 was 3187.9 GWh attaining a monthly increase of 13.1 percent and an annual decrease of 0.1 percent.

While the total water con-sumption has reached 51570.7 thousand cubic metres (m3)

during the same month attaining a monthly decrease of 3.3 percent and an annual rise of 2.9 percent. Regarding the data of buildings permits issued, the total number of permits has reached 483 permits during April 2020, recording a monthly decrease of 24.2 percent.

The total number of regis-tered new vehicles during April 2020 has reached 2535 new vehicles. The figure showed a monthly decrease of 41.0 percent and an annual decrease of 55.6 percent .

As for the Banking Sector; Total Broad Money Supply (M2) recorded about QR584.7bn during April 2020, an annual increase of 4.8 percent compared with April 2019.

On the other hand, cash equivalents; including Com-mercial Bank Deposits reached at QR879.3bn during April 2020. The figure has recorded an annual increase of 9.8 percent compared to April 2019, when deposits recorded approximately QR800.8bn.

Air fares declinein further threatto profit: IATA

REUTERS - PARIS

Airlines cut domestic fares by an average 23 percent last month as traffic picked up from April lows, global industry body IATA said yes-terday, warning that post-coronavirus discounting posed a further threat to profitability.

Domestic passenger traffic rose 30 percent glo-bally in May from a very low base in April, when much of the industry was brought to a near-standstill by the COVID-19 pandemic, IATA sa id in an onl ine presentation.

But the uptick came at the price of fare cuts that airlines can ill afford on top of extra health measures and other new coronavirus-related costs.

“Airlines need cash

because of the crisis and they’re seeking to encourage passengers into seats by offering low fares,” IATA Chief Economist Brian Pearce (pictured) said.

“The challenge (is) that unit costs will have been increased by a number of restrictions that have been put in place,” he said, pre-dicting “quite a difficult time for airlines” as flights grad-ually resume.

A return to profitability remains a distant prospect for many carriers, and the crisis may cost the industry $314bn in lost revenue, IATA predicts.

In Europe, low-cost air-lines including Wizz Air and Ryanair have said they expect to win business from full-service rivals in a dis-count-driven recovery.

Asian markets, among the earliest hit, are now improving steadily, IATA said, with Chinese, South Korean and Vietnamese domestic traffic back within 25 percent of year-earlier levels.

Northern hemisphere summer bookings that typ-ically ramp up from March onwards showed only the b e g i n n i n g s o f a n improvement in May, and Google searches for air travel are still 60 percent below their January level, the organisation said.

Oil falls from $40 as doubts emerge over next step on Opec cutsREUTERS - LONDON

Oil fell after touching its highest since March at more than $40 a barrel yesterday as doubts emerged about the timing and scale of a potential extension to the oil supply pact between Opec and its allies.

Saudi Arabia and Russia have a deal to extend the cuts by

a month, but a policy meeting scheduled for today rather than later in June is unlikely, sources said. Oil earlier dropped after Bloomberg reported that the today's meeting was in doubt.

“Prices were firm so far this week on the news that the meeting was earlier,” said Olivier Jakob (pictured), oil analyst at Petromatrix. “The

retracement today is definitely due to the latest headlines on Opec.”

Brent crude futures for August were down 32 cents, or 0.8 percent , at $39.25 by 1400 GMT, having earlier touched their highest since March 6 at $40.53. WTI crude for July fell 5 cents, or 0.1 percent , to $36.76. Oil had been lifted earlier in the

day by the American Petroleum Institute’s report on Tuesday that US crude inventories fell by 483,000 barrels.

Huawei to launch budget-friendly HUAWEI Y6pTHE PENINSULA - DOHA

Huawei will soon launch its new entry-level smart-phone, the HUAWEI Y6p, featuring a massive 5000mA battery for users looking to enjoy using their devices for longer periods of time without charging. It also offers a triple-camera system and a good amount of storage, at 64GB. Making smart-phone innovations more accessible to users at all levels, the company has introduced two new models to its Y series, the HUAWEI Y6p and the HUAWEI Y8p, both promising to be on the shopping list of Huawei consumers in June 2020.

With a large 5000mAh battery, the HUAWEI Y6p easily fulfil power users’ needs making it one of the most competitive players in the entry-level market. The new smart phone has a 6.3-inch HUAWEI Dewdrop Display with a front camera embedded into the notch. Another highlight feature of the HUAWEI Y6p is its audio capabilities. Boasting the HUAWEI SuperSound solution, the Y6p packs a punch in terms of audio. This feature uses large sound chambers for audio components and better resonance, further increasing speaker volume and quality.

Meanwhile, the Smart Power Amplifier mon-itors ultra linear speakers to sense and adapt changes within surroundings to produce louder sounds with improved bass and clarity, while a sound enhancement algorithm provides support for high quality sound effects. Users can also listen to radio without having to connect earphones to acts as antenna. Huawei’s Y series comes with HUAWEI Mobile Services and its own app platform, the HUAWEI AppGallery, which boasts a wide range of global and local apps making it the third largest app marketplace in the world.

HSBC’s Asia chief backs China security law for Hong KongREUTERS - HONG KONG/LONDON

HSBC’s top executive in Asia has signed a petition backing China’s imposition of a national security law on Hong Kong, the bank confirmed yesterday, breaking years of political neutrality for the UK-based, Asia-focused lender.

Asia-Pacific Chief Executive Peter Wong (pictured) signed the petition and HSBC itself “respects and supports all laws that stabilise Hong Kong’s social order”, the bank said in a post on social media in China.

Now Europe’s largest bank, HSBC has its origins in Hong Kong, a British colony until 1997. It had previously avoided weighing in on the political

situation there in recent months, while facing increased calls in Chinese state media to make its position clear.

A Hong Kong-based spokes-woman for the bank declined to comment beyond the contents of the post.

Wong, a member of the Chinese People’s Political

Consultative Conference, a political advisory body in China, told the official Xinhua news agency in an interview published yesterday he hoped the law could bring stability to Hong Kong.

HSBC moved its head-quarters to London in 1993, but Hong Kong is still its biggest market. It has invested billions of dollars in China to grow its market share in the world’s second-largest economy, and it has become harder for the bank to toe an apolitical line as it faces criticism from both the pro- and anti-Beijing camps.

“The US no longer considers Hong Kong autonomous from China and there are risks that HSBC becomes a political

football after Peter Wong’s dec-laration of support for the new national security law,” Will Howlett, analyst at HSBC share-holder Quilter Cheviot, said.

Western human rights groups were critical: “Does HSBC feel compelled to weigh in on other laws in other countries? We have watched over the past week China clearly assert pressure on businesses and other actors to show their support for the law to create the illusion of support,” said Sophie Richardson, China director for US-based Human Rights Watch.

HSBC was caught up in Hong Kong’s months-long anti-government protests, with its branches vandalised and bronze lion statues outside its

headquarters defaced during a protest march on January 1.

Some protesters accused HSBC of being complicit in action by the authorities against activists trying to raise money to support protesters, accusa-tions the bank denied.

Former Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-ying meanwhile last week criticised HSBC for not supporting Beijing over London in the spat. Some of HSBC’s cor-porate peers have faced swift retribution from Beijing for per-ceived support for the anti-gov-ernment protesters. Cathay Pacific Airways last year was forced to suspend staff involved in the protests, and CEO Rupert Hogg and his top deputy resigned in August.

Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with the guarantee of freedoms, such as an independent legal system and right to protest, not enjoyed on the mainland.

The city was rocked by sometimes violent pro-democracy, anti-China unrest last year by protesters fearing an erosion of those freedoms by Communist Party rulers in Beijing. China denies the accu-sation and accuses the West of stirring up trouble.

The bank’s statement came as tensions rise between London and Beijing after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK would not walk away from the people of Hong Kong if China imposed the new law.

Nigeria’s economy likely to contract in Q2 as business activity tumblesBLOOMBERG

Nigeria’s economy is likely to contract in the second quarter, according to three gauges of business activity that highlight the difficulties the central bank faces in trying to stave off a recession in Africa’s largest economy.

Stanbic IBTC Bank and IHS Markit’s purchasing managers index rose slightly to 40.7 in May from 37.1 the previous month, suggesting economic conditions are worsening even as the gov-ernment relaxes a lockdown in key cities to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

“We expect the PMI reading will continue to pick up over the coming months as economic activities con-tinue to rise, however, it will mostly remain below the 50 mark, which signals a con-traction,” Gbolahan Taiwo, an economist with Stanbic, said in a statement released yesterday. The lender

expects the economy to con-tract 3.3 percent this year on lower oil prices and the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele surprised markets with a 100-basis-point interest-rate cut last week, arguing looser mon-etary policy coupled with fiscal stimulus could rescue t h e e c o n o m y f r o m recession.

He said the drop in output in Africa’s top oil producer could be less than the 3.4 percent projected by the International Monetary Fund.

The central bank’s own manufacturing PMI fell to 42.4 in May, indicating a contraction in the sector for the first time after positive readings over 36 consec-utive months.

The manufacturing PMI compiled by Lagos-based FBNQuest Capital fell to 43.3 in May from 45.8, with all sub-indices falling as well.
