Important Dates Dear Parents One of the things with which we pride ourselves at St Damien’s is the wide variety of learning opportunities and educational experiences we offer to our students. In addition to high quality academic programs, StDCPS also provides many liturgical, sporting, environmental, creative and musical activities through which students may learn, grow and excel. Last week some of our students from years five and six participated in the annual ‘Robocup Challenge’ at Curtin University. These children had been working for a number of months during the school holidays and in a limited number of class sessions with Mr Brett Crebert, who was ably assisted by Mrs Majella Burns and Mrs Sandi Hilson, in order to learn construction and coding skills to enable them to build and program a variety of robots to perform specific tasks. On the first day of competition, last Friday, our students performed exceedingly well in a number of sections including Obstacle Course Manoeuvring and Synchronised Creative Choreography. All teams are to be congratulated on their achievements. One of our teams performed so well that they were invited back last Saturday to participate in the state finals of the Obstacle Course Manoeuvring Challenge. This team of young ladies from our school performed fantastically well and managed to place fourth in the state; a mighty achievement on their first attempt in the competition. I extend my congratulations and thanks to all staff, (including class teachers who modified their programs to free up time for the participants to rehearse), students and parents involved and I also wish to acknowledge the assistance of the P&F in funding the robotics kits for the students to use. Well done, everyone. Yesterday, the Pre Primary students celebrated a beautiful liturgy in which they expressed through prayer, song and liturgical movement their gratitude to God for the gifts of their talents, their families and their bodies. It was a beautiful and poignant reminder that the kingdom of heaven truly belongs to such as these little children. Matthew 19:14 The school Athletics Carnival on Sunday the 21st August commencing at 10.00am is fast approaching and I would just like to remind all families that it is an expectation that all children, barring extenuating circumstances, attend the carnival. This is a great day to witness the endeavours of the children in a spirit of competitive fun. The carnival will be preceded by a Confirmation Preparation Mass commencing at 8.30am for all children receiving Confirmation the following week. All families are of course welcome at these masses. Next Monday 15th August we will be holding a whole school mass at 9.00am in order to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary and there will consequently be no assembly on the day. I would finally like to thank the P&F for once more providing the school community with the opportunity to attend a Protective Behaviours Presentation on Wednesday evening. The parents who attended would have been both alerted and perhaps even somewhat alarmed by the message; the salient point, however, was that actions can be taken to safeguard your children provided you know what you are looking for. For those who were unable to attend you may look up the Protective Behaviours website to see if there are any other presentations taking place in the area. Alternately we may look at a providing other opportunities to present this vital information to the school community at another presentation at StDCPS in future years. Christ Shines Joe Bartucciotto
Guardian Angel from heaven so bright, Watching beside me to lead me aright, Fold thy wings round me, and guard me with love, Softly sing songs to me of heaven above. Amen.

P&F NEWS
To the parents, teachers and friends who made it to our second PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOURS night, THANK YOU!!! A big thank you to Kelly, Andrea, Brett, Jackie, Joe for organising the event and food, and all the students who carried chairs in and out for our Protective Behaviours workshop. It was fantastic and is vital to our children's survival in this world. Whilst the school teaches Protective Behaviours, it is our responsibility as parents to know what to look out for in terms of identifying if someone is grooming our child, how important it is to use the anatomically correct names for ALL our body parts, the difference between safe and unsafe secrets, that in an EMERGENCY a child is allowed to yell out NO! LEAVE ME ALONE!!! With anyone, especially people they know. Justine O' Malley was awesome in her presentation. It was empowering and ever so helpful to be equipped with tools to, in turn, equip our children. Parents, if you missed our Protective Behaviours workshop, try to attend one elsewhere-‐ go to Perth-‐ it is as vital as learning First Aid. (Please do this as well!!!) The ATHLETICS' CARNIVAL is coming up! The Year Two parents have banded together and are busy organising a cake stall and sausage sizzle/roast beef rolls. Thank you to Chenelle and Kelly for all your organising. Parents of Year 5's and 6's, if you are able to give the Year 2 parents a hand, that would be great. We have found many Year 2 parents have FIFO partners or younger siblings. So if you can spare half an hour please put your name on the roster or offer a hand on the day. Teamwork is the secret to any successful event! Sausage sizzle $3 each Roast beef rolls $6 each Water $1.50 Make your own tea/coffee/milo Gold coin donation Slice of cake/biscuit/slice $1 large, small 50 cents Coffee van available (This is not a fundraiser, but for your enjoyment) Upcoming is our GIRLPOWER workshop on Wednesday 24th August. Cancel all your girls' extracurricular activities for the arvo/evening and come along. The P & F is subsidising each parent/child from our school, as we believe this is a valuable workshop. Other parents/girls are welcome at full cost. Hope to see you there. Thank you to Sally and Kim who joined me for our Walk n Talk, it was delightful. All welcome to join me next Friday 19th August at 8.45am outside the office. Look forward to seeing you there! The P&F Planner will be in the upcoming newsletter so that you know which activity your class is doing and who is your class/year group Rep. You are welcome to bring any ideas/issues to these people or to myself. DISCO time is coming! Save your pocket money kids for some treats! This will be held Friday 16th September. Thanks to Elise and Kristie for your organising. The next P&F Meeting is September 7th at 7pm in the staff room. All welcome. For those who have been asking, we are looking at Before/After School Care on site. We need a minimum of 10 children for this to be a viable option. SCHOOL BANKING -‐ Thank you to the Daniella, Sharon, Kim, Jodee, Andrea, Kristie and all the children and parents that support school banking. This is an ongoing fundraiser that teaches our children to save. We have an amazing school with so many lovely hard working parents who also make time to serve one another. Keep an eye out for how you can reach out to those in your class. Have an awesome week! Alicia Sun P&F President

Mother Goose
The young performers of Primadonna Productions are delighted to present "Mother Goose" at the Pinjarra Civic Centre on Aug 12th & 13th at
7-30pm - plus a matinee show at 2pm on the 13th. At just $9 a ticket this is fun for the whole family, and the ticket price includes one complimentary glass of wine for each
adult patron - either pre-show or at interval. Starring Bella Lambert in the title role, and chock full of catchy song and dance numbers ("Born to be Alive", "Wake Me Up Before you Go Go" and Python's "Lumberjack Song" to name a few), this comical script will provide an entertaining outing for
the whole family, from Grandies to youngsters. So.......get into Music Force on Pinjarra Road in Mandurah and grab your seats for all the "eggcitement" (sorry I know it’s
an old joke!) of Mother Goose!! Or buy tickets at the door.
