Christmas Ornament Sales

Christmas Greens Delivery

In preparation for the annual Children’s Christmas Party hosted by Christian Outreach in Action (COA) on December 14, the Community Group invites St. Bartholomew’s parishioners to join in making Christ-mas merrier for the 1,100+ boys and girls who attend this event every year. Giving Trees trimmed with gift-tag ornaments are located in the Church’s Vestibule and Parish Hall. Please take a gift-tag ornament from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift, and bring it unwrapped to the Parish Hall this weekend. For questions about the Christmas Giving Trees, please contact Debby Margulis, Community Group Chair.

God Bless you for your generosity!

Your gift to the Retirement Fund for the Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious who need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little or no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings.

Please make checks payable to Retirement Fund for the Religious.

Thank you for your generosity!

Retirement Fund for the Religious

“We give thanks to God always for all of you, remember-ing you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ”. St. Paul, 1 Thessalonians 1: 2-3.

The above quote from St. Paul expresses how thankful I am for the way you care for the parish and especially your financial support. The sacrifices you make in being members of St. Bartholomew is indeed a great gift!

The enclosed report is a break-down of the fiscal year for July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019. Our parish Finance Council continues to review financial activities every quarter.

We look back to 1937 when the parish was established; the opening of our beautiful church in 1939; and the expansion of the church in 1957 with the building of the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. We are connected to the people of the past as we continue to care for the buildings for future generations. Above all through the various ministries we continue to spread the faith of the Lord to our parish families and further abroad.

May God bless you and your families as we continue the journey to life in Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior.

Father Michael Reardon, Pastor

Today’s Readings

Mass Intentions

4 LITURGY

First Reading — He shall bring justice for the afflicted; the earth shall overflow with the knowledge of the LORD (Isaiah 11: 1-10). Psalm — Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever (Psalm 72). Second Reading — Glorify God by living in harmony with one another, welcoming each other as Christ welcomed you (Romans 15: 4-9). Gospel — Produce good fruit worthy of your baptism; repent, for the reign of God is near (Matthew 3: 1-12). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

It was of him [John the Baptist] that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: / “A voice of one crying out in the desert, / Prepare the way of the Lord, / make straight his paths.” (Matthew 3:3)

John the Baptist does not invoke idyllic scenes when speaking to the Pharisees and Sadducees, instead accusing them of insincerity and presumption. He called them to repentance, demanding that they “produce good fruit as evidence” (Matthew 3:8). This would be a good lesson for all of us. Repentance means nothing if we do nothing. We are called to bear fruit—in our work-places, our communities, and our world—to bring about the kingdom John so eagerly anticipates. Let us reflect on when and how we may have failed to produce good fruit and commit to bearing good fruit in the future. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Adult: In what ways can I bear fruit by bringing harmony to my family, my neighborhood, the world?

Youth/Teen: What could you do so that others will see in you what it means to follow Jesus?

Lord Hear Our Prayers Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Needed Volunteers are needed at all six Masses—5:00 pm Vigil; 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 am; and 12:30 and 5:30 pm—to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Eucharistic Ministers serve one Saturday or Sunday, every four weeks. Eucharistic Ministers must be fully-initiated Catholics (reception of the sacra-ments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation). If you can help serve, please contact Cynthia Miramontes at (626)926-2555 for information about training for this enriching ministry.

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 11: 1–10; Psalm 72: 1–2, 7–8, 12–13, 17; Romans 15: 4–9; Matthew 3: 1–12 Have you ever known a moment when, just for a brief instant, you felt that all was right with the world? It is just such a moment, stretched into eternity, that the writer of Isaiah describes in today’s first reading: the perfection of everything, centered in God’s spirit, where knowledge, justice, and awe in God’s presence reign. In such a paradise, everyone sees eye to eye and thinks in harmony with each other, as Saint Paul describes in his letter to the Romans. Even animals with a natural animosity toward one another coexist peacefully. John the Baptist under-stood that such harmonious relationships do not simply happen. They are the fruit of living in right relationship with God and others.

Eden, Revisited Remember Eden? God created humans and all creatures in love, for love. The failure of humanity recorded in the book of Genesis is that from the beginning people have tended to desire, not to be like God, but to be gods. Instead of seeing the fingerprint of our creator in others, we tend to see them as competition. Where there is abundance, we see scarcity. We seek the things of this world rather than seeking and finding God’s life and goodness in our midst. The writer of Isaiah paints a far better picture, which Christians have seen as a foretelling of the Christ, the Anointed One of God, Jesus.

The Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand Knowing Jesus as the One for whom the people of God have longed helps us to understand John the Baptist’s strong words to the Pharisees and Sadducees in today’s Gospel passage. They had the responsibility to lead the people toward right relationship with God and others, and instead had failed to produce the fruits of faithful living themselves. John did not prevent them from approaching him for the baptism of repentance, but asked them to turn their lives more faithfully to God and live accordingly. John understood himself as the forerunner of the One for whom the people had been waiting—the one upon whom the spirit of the Lord rests, the spirit of wisdom, under-standing, counsel and strength, knowledge and fear of the Lord.

In Advent, we prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of the Lord. Not that Jesus has not already come, or that the Lord is not already in our midst; rather, we take this season to appreciate in a new and fuller way that God’s coming as a child in Bethlehem and Christ’s promised return are about the establishment of the kingdom of God—already in our midst and yet not known in its fullness until the Lord returns in glory. Updating the Parish Census Please remember to complete and return Parish Registration forms to the Parish Office as soon as possible. Your cooperation will help us to update our parishioner profile by providing insight as to how the parish can best serve the needs of this faith communi-ty into the future.

Thank you for helping us to update St. Bartholomew’s parish census!

Gifts of Stock Gifts of appreciated assets such as stock are an excellent way for you to make a charitable gift. Stock may be transferred directly to the Archdiocese for the benefit of St. Bartholomew. These gifts will not affect your cash flow, and they provide the following tax benefits: > A possible charitable deduction to help you on taxes > Bypass of federal and state capital gains taxes > Avoidance of the tax on net investment income From a tax perspective, a gift of appreciated assets makes good sense. You can make the capital gains taxes optional, achieve significant tax savings, and support parish programs. For additional information please contact Brooke Glazer at (213) 637-7512 or [email protected].
