BUMPER CROP A handful of Euros may stand for more money, butthere sure can=t be as many of them: by our count, there are 27 stallions retiring to stud in North Americain 2014 for $7,500 or more. Of the 27, we find 23 inKentucky, two each in Florida and New York. I=m surewe can count on readers to let us know about anywe=ve missed! This week, thumbnail sketches of thecandidates:

Kentucky Alternation (Distorted Humor--Alternate, by SeattleSlew)--Plied his trade mainly in the Midwest forowner-breeder Pin Oak Stud, to which he retires for

$7,500. He won the GII Peter Pan S.at Belmont Park as a 3-year-old andthe GII Oaklawn H. at four, both atnine furlongs, and also won twoGrade III=s and earned over $1 million. Pin Oak has always had agood following, and though he maynot be the most high-profile sire toretire in Kentucky for 2013, youwouldn=t discount his chances onebit.

Animal Kingdom (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}--Dalicia {Ger},by Acatenango {Ger})--Won the GI Kentucky Derby ondirt, the G1 Dubai World Cup on synthetic (Tapeta),and gave Wise Dan a fright in the 2012 GI Breeders=Cup Mile on turf; effective at distances from a mile to

10 furlongs, though his twobest wins were at the lattertrip. Has a great outcrosspedigree, being by a son ofCandy Stripes (by BlushingGroom) out of a German-bredmare by Acatenango. A greatprospect, though a word ofcaution on the physical: hissire >Leroi= is a medium-sized,Blushing Groom type, but

Animal Kingdom is a big, scopey type, likely throwingmore to his damsire. I maybe wouldn=t send him thesame physical type you would send to >Leroi=.

Data Link (War Front--Database, by Known Fact)--GradeI winner at a mile (2012 GI Maker=s Mark Mile, atKeeneland); also second to Wise Dan in the same racein 2013), and won Grade II races at 8 1/2 and ninefurlongs. Strictly a grass horse; he=s a Grade I winnerby War Front, standing at Claiborne for a veryreasonable $7,500, another in a string of >righteous=stud fees at Claiborne for 2014.

Oppenheim cont.

Denman (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}--Peach {Aus}, by Vain{Aus})--Won a Group 1 and two Group 2 races inAustralia over seven furlongs among nine wins from 12starts. He=s by Lonhro, who=s proven so popular inKentucky as a >reverse shuttler,= and is out of a mare byVain, so he is bred to be fast. Given Lonhro=spopularity, Darley decided to being Denman toKentucky to reverse shuttle as well, and he=ll bestanding his first Kentucky season for $15,000 in2014.

Fast Bullet (Speightstown--Renfro Valley Star, byDayjur)--Lightly raced chestnut made just seven startsover three seasons, his best win coming this springwhen he led all the way to beat fellow Zayat runnerJustin Philip (First Samurai) in the GII True North H. atsix furlongs. Standing for $7,500, Fast Bullet goes tostallion-maker Ben Walden=s Pauls Mill Farm, which isalso debuting I Want Revenge in 2014 (see below).

Flat Out (Flatter--Cresta Lil, by Cresta Rider)--Ran 29times in all over six seasons, the last 23 of them ingraded races from ages fivethrough seven. He was in thefirst three in 16 graded races, including 11 Grade I races. Hewon three times at thehighest levelBtwo runnings ofthe 10-furlong Jockey ClubGold Cup and the GI CigarMile. He also won the GIISuburban H. twice. He is oneof three new sires forSpendthrift next year and will stand for $10,000.

Fort Larned (E Dubai--Arlucea, by Broad Brush)--Winnerof 10 of 25 lifetime starts, including the 2012 GIWhitney H., the 2012 GI Breeders= Cup Classic (Beyer115, defeating Mucho Macho Man) and this year=s GIStephen Foster H. leading all the way and drawing offby six lengths. He earned $4.4 million overall, and ranBeyer figures of 107+ six times. He=ll get a good shotat Adena Springs, where he=ll debut for a $15,000 fee.

Graydar (Unbridled=s Song--Sweetest Smile, by Dehere)--Unbeaten in three starts this year, namely the GI DonnH., GII New Orleans H. (both 9 furlongs) and the GIIKelso H. at a mile, and was 5-for-6 lifetime. Succeedshis late sire at Taylor Made and deserves to be wellsupported. Had he made the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile,he might well have given the winner Goldencentsplenty to think about.

I Want Revenge (Stephen Got Even--Meguial {Arg}, byRoy)--Won the GI Wood Memorial in spectacular fashionat odds of 1-2 in 2009 and looked the favorite for thatyear=s GI Kentucky Derby, but was sidelined by injury. He joins Fast Bullet as this year=s Pauls Mill intake, which means he=s gone to a farm which knows how togive them a good shot, and at $10,000, he looks veryfair value for a horse who was the likely Derby favorite.

“With 60 fillies or mares selling for the equivalent of $1-million or more this autumn – a 67% increase on 36 last year – it’s only a pleasant surprise that the European Mixed sales were up just as much if not more than the North American ones. There are still more millionaires (equine and human) in America, as it’s still a much bigger market, but with 30%-plus gains at all three major European mixed sales, the 2013 sales season indisputably goes down in the history books as the year the thoroughbred market came roaring back.”

Jimmy Creed (Distorted HumorBHookedonthefeelin, byCitidancer)--A $900,000 yearling purchase, a goodsprinter who won the GI Malibu S. at 7 furlongs on

opening day of Santa Anita=s2012-13 winter meet and cameback in April to win the GII Potrero Grande S. at 6 1/2 furlongs, both onconventional dirt. In that respecthe is more like his sire and has achance to further establishDistorted Humor as a sire ofsires, which would be welcome.Reasonably priced at $12,500,

which if memory serves is the price at which his sirekicked off, at the resurgent Spendthrift operation.

Justin Philip (First Samurai--Ava Knowsthecode, byCryptoclearance)--Very useful sprinter who ran 32 timesover four seasons and finally got his deserved Grade I

win in this year=s Alfred G.Vanderbilt S. at Saratoga; alsowon the GII Woody Stephensand a Grade III, and placed innine other graded races.Sprinters with this kind ofrecord--danced a lot of dances, usually right there--often turnout to be much better siresthan the bare facts of theirrecords might suggest. Very

well bred--he=s a half-brother to four other black-typewinners, including Algorithms--and goes to CastletonLyons for $12,500.

Liaison (Indian Charlie--Galloping Gal, by VictoryGallop)--Won the GI CashCall Futurity as a 2-year-oldand contested eight graded races from eight starts atthree, and connections obviously thought a lot of him,as he ran in the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Travers S.and he did place in the GII Swaps S. and GII Jim DandyS. He came back this year at four to win the GII MervynLeroy H. Both his graded wins were on synthetic atHollywood Parl, but he also did win a stakes onconventional dirt and is another headed to Spendthrift, for $10,000.

Morning Line (Tiznow--Indian Snow, by A.P. Indy)--A bitof a forgotten horse, being very lightly raced the last

two seasons. Won the GII Pennsylvania Derby andmissed by a head in the GIBreeders= Cup Dirt Mile as a3-year-old in 2010. He won theseven-furlong GI Carter H. atfour and the GII Mervyn LeroyH. at five. A $700,000 yearlingacquisition and by Tiznow, whohas a real chance to be a sire of

sires, Morning Line has retired to Lane=s End for$10,000.

Orb (Malibu Moon--Lady Liberty, by Unbridled)--Though,like many GI Kentucky Derby winners, he never wonagain after the Derby, that was his fifth win in a row,

which included the GII Fountain of Youth S.(defeating the theretoforeunbeaten Violence) and GI Florida Derby. This is ahorse with an aura: comesfrom Stuart Janney=s probablyoldest and best family andgoes to Claiborne for$25,000. He=ll get serioussupport from a good

Claiborne syndicate and is sure to deservedly be one ofthis group=s commercial leaders.

Overanalyze (Dixie UnionBUnacloud, by UnaccountedFor)--Could prove quite a shrewd buy for WinStar.Though he wouldn=t be a household name, he did winthe GII Futurity S. and GII Remsen S. at two, and theGI Arkansas Derby at three earlier this year. He=s byDixie Union, also the sire of Union Rags, who is anunderrated source of quality (he was, after all, a verygood 2-year-old by Dixieland Band), and does have afew things going for him, including where he=sstanding. He debuts for $10,000.

Oxbow (Awesome Again--Tizamazing, by Cee=s Tizzy)--This year=s GI Preakness winner under an inspiredfront-running ride from the rejuvenated Gary Stevens, and also second to Palace Malice in the GI Belmont. At78 his equally rejuvenated trainer, Wayne Lukas, isn=tlikely to have changed his methods, so Oxbow dancedplenty of dances until his retirement after the GIHaskell, but that=s no bad thing: Lukas has trainedplenty of top sires. With the promise of his ownerCalumet=s support, Oxbow goes to Taylor Made, alongside Graydar, for $20,000.

Paynter (Awesome Again--Tizso, by Cee=s Tizzy)--Anexciting sire prospect with a great advertisingcampaign, Paynter and Oxbow are actually3/4-brothers, both being by Awesome Again and out of

full sisters to Tiznow. Paynter wasa game front-running second toUnion Rags in the 2012 GI BelmontS., then came back to win the GIHaskell in his next start. He didn=twin a stakes this year, but ran aBeyer 114 winning a HollywoodPark allowance race over sevenfurlongs (synthetic) and was runner-up to Mucho Macho Man in the GI Awesome Again S., which Ithink we used to know as the

Goodwood. A horse with a lot of charisma and a bigshot, he goes to WinStar for $25,000.

Point of Entry (Dynaformer--Matlacha Pass, by Seekingthe Gold)--Probably Dynaformer=s last great shot tomake a sire of sires, and a big shot he has, too: he wonfive in a row in 2012, including three Grade I=s in New

York at 11-12 furlongs on theturf (Man O=War, SwordDancer, Turf Classic) beforejust failing to peg back LittleMike in the 2012 GI Breeders=Cup Turf. He probably ran hisbest race ever when defeatingnone other than AnimalKingdom in the GI GulfstreamPark Turf H. at nine furlongslast February, and added his

fifth Grade I in the 10-furlong Manhattan in June. Hegoes to Adena Springs for $25,000 and should appealto Europeans as well as Americans. You wouldn=t belooking for precocious 2-year-olds, but this is a horsewho really will have the kind of support that could seehim make a sire.

Shanghai Bobby (Harlan=s Holiday--Steelin=, byOrientate)--Unbeaten in five starts at two, including afive-length trouncing of subsequent dual Grade I winnerGoldencents in the GI Champagne and a hard-fought

win in the GI Breeders= CupJuvenile. Unbeaten 2-year-oldshave a pretty fair record as sires, and it cannot have goneunnoticed that when Coolmoredecided to replenish the Ashfordroster, they acquired fourconsecutive champion juveniles:Lookin At Lucky (first 2-year-olds2014), Uncle Mo (first yearlings2014), Hansen (since sold toSouth Korea, first foals 2014),and Shanghai Bobby. BySmart Strike from a good Ned Evans family he=ll haveplenty of appeal. Goes to Millennium Farms for $7,500.

Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy--Take Charge Lady, byDehere)--By A.P. Indy, which in itself is a goodrecommendation, out of triple Grade I winner and$2.4-million earner Take Charge Lady--which makes him

a half-brother to this year=spro-tem 3-year-old championWill Take Charge. This horseran two races which alonegive him a big shot, in myview: he won the GI Florida Derby, which is asgood a race for producingsires as any you can name:

and this year, at four, he ran a sensational race in theGII Alysheba at Churchill Downs, winning by six lengthsin a Beyer 109. He goes to WinStar for $20,000 anddeserves to be well supported, which he will be.

Verrazano (More Than Ready--Enchanted Rock, byGiant=s Causeway)--Won his first four starts, including asensational 16-length allowance win at Gulfstream andthe GI Wood Memorial, then returned in the summer towin the GI Haskell by nearly 10 lengths, runninganother sensational race to record a Beyer 116. OnlyFort Larned and Flat Out among this year=s retiringstallions--and both as older horses--ran figures that highin their careers. Verrazano goes to Ashford, though atthis writing I believe they still have not announced astud fee, leaving open the possibility that he remains intraining in 2014. He was probably the most high-profileAmerican 3-year-old of 2013 and is sure to commandstrong market support.

Violence (Medaglia d=Oro--Violent Beauty, by GoneWest)--Won all three of his starts at two, including the

GII Nashua S., then shippedacross the country to win the GI CashCall Futurity. Injured andretired to Hill >n= Dale afterrunning second to Orb in theGII Fountain of Youth. He was a$600,000 yearling, and the>judges= confirm he is >gorgeous=.He=ll stand for $15,000, andfrom what we hear on the BushTelegraph, he=s already just
