THE SENIOR SENIOR – This week’s col-umn is a combination of historical as well as personal information that has to do with my father who, if he was still alive today, would have celebrated his 93rd birthday on Septem-ber the 4th . His name was Donald but every-body just called him Don. I called him dad.

Dad was born on September 4, 1926, the fourth of five children, in Wheeling, West

Virginia. When he was only 3 years old, the Great Depression of 1929 hit. Things were pretty tough for the family of seven, but every-one pitched in to do what they could to help the rest of the family survive. Fortunately, all of them made it through the tough times. Just a little bit of family history here.

When dad was through his sophomore year in high school, he dropped out of school, lied about his age, saying he was 18, and joined the navy. Little did dad know that just two years later, he would find himself as a gunner on one of the landing craft that was headed for Omaha Beach. Yes, that’s right, my dad was a survivor of the invasion of Normandy. The night before the landing, dad had won $100 in a poker game but told his buddies that he probably wouldn’t live to spend it.

Dad took that money and made his way back to West Virginia where he took a job on the railroad. His run on the railroad often brought him through Bellefontaine, where he would walk downtown to Don’s Diner to grab some-thing to eat. It was there that he met Ramona, my mother, who was a waitress at the time. He quickly changed his home base to Belle-fontaine, and he and my mother got married.

Fast forward to 1972 when dad had his first of five heart attacks. The railroad board decided that he could no longer perform his duties as an engineer so he was pensioned and let go. Tough news for a man who, at one point, held three jobs in order to support his own family of six. We qualified for public assistance, but dad said there were people who were much worse off than we were, so he declined it. I think he was just too proud.

It was then that dad decided to go back to school and get his diploma. Now, there were no records to be found from West Virginia regarding his education, so the school board decided to take his word for it and grand-fathered him in as a junior at Bellefontaine High School for the 74-75 school year. It just so happens that I started my freshman year in 1974, so for five days a week, my dad and I went to high school together. We had no classes together, except for a lunch period where I would occasionally buy the “old man” his lunch, as I had a part time job after school. Dad would eat his lunch then sneak off to the janitor’s room where he was allowed to smoke his pipe. No other student has ever been af-forded that luxury.

Dad went on to graduate on June 4, 1975 with a 3.85 grade point and held the title of the oldest person in his class. THE SENIOR SE-NIOR. When he walked across the stage to receive his diploma, the applause was deafen-ing and there was not a dry eye in the house. I couldn’t have been prouder.

Sadly, it was only a year later on June 5, 1976, that dad passed away from complications due to his final heart attack. He was just three months shy of his 50 th birthday. It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 40 years since he has been gone, but it seems as if it was only yester-day when he left.

Maybe someday we’ll make that trip to Don’s Diner together.

-Kevin
