Diana Heads Saturday Action

While the G1 Darley Irish Oaks will be the center of attention internationally at theweekend, the domestic schedule of Saturday graded action is headed by Saratoga’s

GI Diana S. at nine furlongs on the grass. A well-matched field of 10 will face the starter in the wide-openbetting affair and with the lone exception of the multiplegraded-stakes placed Caroline Thomas (Giant’sCauseway), each of the other nine runners is a graded-stakes winner. Half the field has a Grade I victory to theircredit, including the comebacking Garden City S. victressAlterite (Fr) (Literato {Fr}), while Tannery (Ire) (DylanThomas {Ire}) will try to give owner Richard Santulli asecond consecutive Diana following the exploits of

Laughing (GB) (Dansili {GB}) last summer.

Late-Season Campaign for ROTW

Last year's G1 Investec Derby winner Ruler of the World (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}), a late withdrawal from the June 7 G1 CoronationCup after pulling muscles in his flank the day before the race, is setto reappear in late summer. Harry Herbert, racing advisor to partowner Al Shaqab Racing, told Racing UK, "Ruler of The World isin good form and it was very unlucky for [trainer] Aidan [O'Brien]and all of his team that he pulled muscles in his flank the daybefore the Coronation Cup. I saw his last piece of work, and hecould not have been more impressive so we were all gutted that hecouldn't run."

Cassatt Returns a Winner

Things didn’t look especially good for Fox Hill Farm’s J “TDN Rising Star” J Cassatt (Tapit) at the start of a five-furlong allowance yesterday at DelawarePark, spotting the field a three-length start. But the fleet grey filly had bridged thegap by the time they’d reached the turn, slingshot past her rivals approaching thestretch and drew off with authority, earning comparisons to another Fox Hill fillywith the initials HDG.

Opening Day at Del Mar cont. from p1

Six additional Grade I races feature on the schedule, the first of which--the Eddie Read S. for older males atnine furlongs on the turf--takes place this comingSunday afternoon. Two-year-olds get their chance atGrade I glory at the tail end of the meet in the GI DelMar Debutante for the fillies Aug. 30 and the Del MarFuturity for the boys on closing day. Five of the stakesoffer all-fees-paid entries for this year=s Breeders= Cup atSanta Anita. The GI Bing Crosby S. (Turf Sprint), theGI Clement L. Hirsch S. (Distaff), the GII Del Mar H.(Turf), the GII Pat O=Brien S. (Dirt Mile) and the PacificClassic (Classic). The overnight purse structure alsoremains strong, with open and Cal-bred maidensrunning for a $75,000 and allowance purses between$77,000 and $85,000. Bottom-level claiming horseswill race for a $20,000 pot.

>Turf=s= Up... As part of a broader strategy, officials at Del Marannounced just after the conclusion of the 2013 meetthat the existing turf course would be replaced in favorof an expanded course some 80 feet wide around theentire circumference of the track. Such a move would

allow races on thegrass to beconducted with asmany as 14 runnersas opposed to theprevious number of10 horses. Afterapproximately amonth=s worth ofdelays, Del Mar tookdelivery of the newsod from the

Coachella Valley on St. Patrick=s Day, Mar. 17, with apromise that it would be ready for opening day despitethe delay. A softer course consisting of GN-1 grass(named for its inventor, golfer Greg Norman), there willbe no fewer than six different rail placements from zeroto 30 feet out from zero.

New Kids At the Shore... The Del Mar meeting always attracts the cream ofthe crop of the training ranks, and this year will be nodifferent. Top conditioners such as Doug O=Neill, wholed the Santa Anita spring standings, Bob Baffert, PeterMiller, John Sadler and Jerry Hollendorfer will all bestrongly represented, but there are a few top horsemenwho will be making their Del Mar debuts. Trainer MarkCasse, who recently won his first Queen=s Plate withthe filly Lexie Lou (Sligo Bay {Ire}), is expected to haveas many as 40 head stabled at the seaside oval thissummer. AThis will be a new experience for us andwe=re excited about being there,@ Casse told Del Marpublicity. AMy wife, Tina, and some of the family will bewith us for the summer. We=re hoping to have the kindof success that will open the way for a year-roundpresence in Southern California. I=d like that a lot.@Casse, whose major clients include John Oxley, ErnieSemersky and Dory Newell=s Conquest Stables andCalifornian Gary Barber, figures to be represented by SPUnbridled Reward (Warrior=s Reward); SW & GSPConquest Titan (Birdstone); GIII Illinois Derby winnerDynamic Impact (Tiznow); Lexie Lou; 2012 SovereignAward winner Spring in the Air (Spring at Last); andSisterly Love (Bellamy Road), who carried Barber=s silksto a victory in Keeneland=s GIII Doubledogdare S. thispast April. Another old, but new face this summer is PhilD=Amato, the former assistant to trainer Mike Mitchell, who took over the string upon Mitchell=s retirement inApril. A graduate of the University of SouthernCalifornia and of the University of Arizona=s RacetrackIndustry Program, D=Amato previously worked forChuck Simon in the east and midwest before hookingup with Mitchell. Obviously (Ire) (Choisir {Aus})provided D=Amato with his first graded-stakes win inthe GIII American S. May 17 and a maiden Grade Isuccess in defense of his title in the Shoemaker Mile S.June 17. The two-time defending champion of the GII Del Mar Mile, he is likely to prep for the GI Breeders=Cup Mile in that $250,000 event on the Pacific Classicundercard Aug. 24.

LATE SUMMER CAMPAIGN FOR RULER Last year=s G1 Investec Derby winner Ruler of theWorld (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a late withdrawal from theJune 7 G1 Coronation Cup after pulling muscles in hisflank the day before the race, is set to reappear in latesummer. Harry Herbert, racing advisor to part owner Al ShaqabRacing, told Racing UK, ARuler of The World is in goodform and it was very unlucky for [trainer] Aidan

[O=Brien] and all of his teamthat he pulled muscles inhis flank the day before theCoronation Cup. I saw hislast piece of work, and hecould not have been moreimpressive so we were allgutted that he couldn'trun.@ Herbert noted that ahandful of Europe=s topevents are being consideredfor the 4-year-old. "He will now be preparedfor a late summer campaignon decent ground, with noimmediate plan as to wherehe might reappear, but the[G1] Juddmonte

International [Aug. 20] and [G1] Irish Champion S.[Sept. 14] will certainly come into reckoning,@ Herbertsaid. AHe ran a blinder in last year's [G1] QIPCOChampions S. [when finishing third], so that mustsurely also come into calculations this year." Ruler of the World was campaigned to his Derby winby John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith. AlShaqab Racing bought a share in the chestnut prior tothis year=s G1 Dubai World Cup, where he finished 13thin what has been his only outing in 2014.

What Has Become of 2yo Racing? “Be it in New York, Del Mar in Southern California or anywhere else, there is no harder sell than an early season 2-year-old race. Nobodywants to run in them. Not only do most modern trainers try to run theirhorses as infrequently possible, but with 2-year-olds the only race theyseem to care about is the Breeders' Cup and they know, these days, they can get there off one race, a maiden win.” Bill Finley, ESPN
