Sri Venkateswara Temple of Pittsburgh is conducting the Viswa Shanti Astakhsari Mahamantra Yagnam for World Peace and the prosperity and wellbeing of all devotees. Yagnam is a pre-vedic, spiritual and religious Hindu ritual of sacrificing and sublimating the havana sámagri (herbal preparations) in the fire, accompanied by the chanting of Vedic mantras. The philosophy of yagna teaches a way of living in the society in harmony and a lifestyle which promotes and protects higher human values in the society. This is indeed the basis of an ideal human culture, which contributes to Viswa Shanti (World Peace). Astakshari Mahamantram: OM NAMO NARAYANAYA means “Salutation to the Lord Vishnu who is omni-present.”

During Viswa Shanti Astakshari Mahamantra Yagnam the following Veda and Purana Parayanam will be conducted (see program details for specific timings).

Rigveda Rig Veda is the oldest available literature of mankind. In Sanskrit it means praise and the hymns of Rigveda are an expression of adoration and worship addressed to various divinity. It contains the earliest form of all Sanskrit mantras. The Rig-Vedic collection of mantras consists of 1,017 hymns, covering about 10,600 stanzas.

Yajurveda Yajurveda is the veda of worship and contains the knowledge, principles and the methods of performing yagnas and served as guidebook for priests. Hence we find systematic code of worship evolving in Yajurveda. The essence of mantras and incantations inspires humans to translate good thoughts into action and walk the path of karma.

Samaveda Samaveda focuses on the musical chanting patterns of the Rigveda mantras and hymns. These musical patterns are supposed to emanate from the vibrations and resonance of the cosmos itself and were designed to bring peace to the vagrant mind.

Atharvaveda Atharva means unwavering, unchanging, thus on a more spiritual level the Atharvaveda expounds the universal truths, the oneness of the universe, the way to live in communion with it and finally to merge with Supreme.Atharvaveda also deals with the sound therapy aspects of the mantras. Its hymns are of a more diverse character than the Rigveda and are also simpler in language.

Divya Prabhandam The Nalayira Divya Prabandham is a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses composed by the 12 Azhwars. These verses express feelings of deep devotion

and longing for the Lord, are songs in praise of the Lord in the various Vishnu temples. They provide the essence of the vedas in a simple way.

Venkatachala Mahatyam Venkatachala Mahatyam describes the glory of the Vekatachalam, the place and the shrine. Scriptures tell us the Venkatachala Sapta giri is ADI VARAHA KSHETRAM; and Lord Vishnu in Kaliyuga had Garuda bring down the KREDACHALA of VAIKUNTHAM along with Swami Pushkarini, and the Ananda Nilaya GOPURAM of the holy Temple to this holy site. This glory is described in several of the PURANAS. Scriptures also tell us that this Holy site and the Ananda Nilaya GOPURAM are ETERNALLY guarded on four sides by the Avataras of VISHNU HIMSELF. Scriptures also tell us that reciting the Glory of Venkatachala Mahatyam is like reciting the Glory of the LORD himself.

Ramayana This Sanskrit epic poem ascribed to the Hindu sage and Sanskrit poet Valmiki Maharshi is regarded as one of the great works of Indian literature, along with the Mahabharata. The Ramayana explores human values and the concept of Dharma. It depicts the duties of relationships, portraying ideal father, ideal wife, ideal servant, and the ideal king. It consists of 24,000 verses.

Srimad Bhagavatam Srimad-Bhagavatam is also known as the Bhagavath Purana, one of the eighteen Puranas - is the most influential of the Puranas, and is sometimes referred to as the “Fifth Veda”. It has 18,000 verses, each of which deals with a specific aspect of transcendental knowledge and practice of Krishna bhakti-yoga.

Maha Bharatham The Mahabharata a historic story about Kuru Vamsam (Pandavas And Kauravas), compiled by Veda Vyasa, is the longest known epic poem ever written. It contains the text of Bhaghavat Gita, numerous subplots, interpolations on theology, moral conduct & political governance. It consists of over 100,000 shlokas.

Bhagavad Gita The Bhagavad Gita is the essence of the Vedas and Upanishads. It is a universal scripture applicable to all people for all times. It is a book with sublime thoughts and practical instructions on Yoga, Devotion, Vedanta, self-discipline and Action. The Bhagavad Gita has influenced many great thinkers over the years.

Vishnu SahasranamamThe Vishnu Sahasranama is a list of 1,000 names of Lord Vishnu. Regular chanting of the Vishnu Sahasranama calms the mind. Every human being has the privilege to chant Vishnu Sahasranama. The only qualification for chanting is Bhakti.

Narayana UpanishadThe Supreme Being, Narayana willed the creation of all living beings. From Him emerged the breath of life, Prana. So too, the mind, senses and elements of creation: earth, fire & water also emerged from Him. From Narayana emerged Bramha, the Creator. From Narayana emerged Rudra, the Destroyer. From Narayana emerged Indra, the Ruler of Beings. From Narayana emerged the Prajapathis, twelve Adityas, Rudras and all the vedas.

From Narayana alone emerged all forms of wealth. All beings emerged from Narayana in the beginning. Ultimately, all beings will merge into Narayana too. Narayan is Eternal. Narayana is the Creator, Brahma. Narayana is the Destroyer, Shiva. Narayana is Indra too. Narayana is the inner principle of heaven and earth. Narayana is time itself. The directions too are Narayana. Narayana is present in the higher and lower worlds. Narayana forms the inner and outer worlds. The Supreme Being, Narayana, is everything …past and present ..blemish less, ever blissful, one without another, all-pervasive, pure and one divinity – thus is Narayana Truly - He is one without a second …only one who knows this can merge in Him.

The great mantra of Narayana begins with the word “Om”. This is followed by the word “Namo”. The final word is “Naaraayanaaya”. “Om” is a single syllable and “Namo” is two. “Naaraayanaaya” is five syllables together they form the 8 syllabled great mantra: “Om Namo Naaraayanaaya”. Verily, one who contemplates on this mantra, gains good health all his life. He attains kingly prosperity, knowledge and ruler ship. He attains immortality.

Truly, he attains immorality. The blissful Supreme Being resides within, as the life principal, in the form of “Aum”. “Aum” consists of sounds A, U and M. It is supreme bliss and peace. Yogis who know this, chant it regularly and attain liberation by breaking the bonds of life and death. Those who adore the mantra “Om Namo Naaraayanaaya” attain the Supreme Abode of Vaikunta Narayana’s seat is the lotus of the heart. This knowledge is the highest and shines like lightening.

Krishna, the son of Devaki is the very embodiment of Brahma. He alone resides in all beings, the infinite basis of everything. He himself is causeless. All this is well said in the Atharva Veda. If this Upanishad is chanted in the morning, it destroys the sins of the previous night. If it is chanted in the evening, it destroys the day’s sins. If chanted at noon, whilst facing the sun, truly does it pulverize the five great sins. Those who chant this Upanishad, receives the merit of studying all the vedas. Finally, he attains oneness with Narayana Himself. Indeed, he attains oneness with Narayana. These are the teachings of the Narayana Upanishads. May there be peace, peace, peace.
