Cover Rationale: The violin is the smallest instrument of the string family with arguably the greatest range of expression and intensity among the orchestral families. The musical score in the background, Mercu Kegemilangan was commissioned to Vivian Chua for the MPO’s 20th anniversary season to embody the rich tapestry of Malaysia. Twenty years on, although we remain relatively young compared to our more established international contemporaries, we continue our mission to make our mark in the world of classical music and maintain our commitment to enriching the cultural landscape in Malaysia.

MESSAGE FROMTHE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Welcome to the 2019 season of Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) and the Malaysian Philharmonic

I would like to welcome Gerard Salonga as a Resident Conductor who will usher the new year with the MPO in true Viennese style in January. Renowned for his expertise in the South East Asia region, he will share this season’s conducting engagements with our current Resident Conductor, Naohisa Furusawa, both of whom will further bring the MPO to a whole new level of artistic excellence.
This season will be as exciting and interesting, if not better. We have programmed a spectrum of a wide ranging genres which will appease the ever-changing appetites of music lovers. Staying true to its commitment to present the best in classical music, the MPO performs masterpieces from the great centuries including Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades opera and Mozart’s arias.
Stretching its versatility, the MPO will present concerts themed Beatbox Symphony and rock-themed concerts featuring local luminaries of the genre, the music from the entire Star Wars series, the screening of blockbuster Raiders of the Lost Ark with its ‘live’ music
composer James Horner, and bring back the monumental Distant Worlds: Music from FINAL FANTASY concerts.
The MPO continues to bring the beauty of its music outside the concert platform to the underprivileged through its Education & Outreach Programme (ENCOUNTER), and is committed to nurture the appreciation of music through the local talents from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).
I take this opportunity to thank PETRONAS and our sponsors, subscribers, collaborators and audiences for the continuous belief and support that have made this new season possible.

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 17 August 1998. With the initial search for outstanding musicians involving a worldwide audition tour, the result was a symphony orchestra made up of musicians from 25 nations, including Malaysians, a remarkable example of
A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians have performed with the MPO including Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Chris Botti and

With each new season, the MPO continues to present an exciting programme of orchestral music drawn from over three centuries, as well as the crowd-pleasing concert
jazz, traditional, contemporary and commissioned works.
The MPO regularly performs in major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has toured Singapore (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2018), Japan (2001, 2009 and 2017), Korea (2001), Australia (2004), China (2006), Taiwan (2007) and Vietnam (2013). The MPO has also released 21 commercial CDs.
Its Education and Outreach Programme (ENCOUNTER) reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness and appreciation through dedicated activities at such diverse venues as schools, colleges, hospitals and community centres.
The MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation has been the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO); its debut concert at DFP in 2007 was followed by a Peninsula Malaysia tour. Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
The initial steps towards realising the long-cherished dream of the late PETRONAS Chairman, Tun Azizan Zainul Abidin, to create a youth orchestra as a ‘stage for young talents’, alongside the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), were taken on 13 January 2006. Some 500 aspiring musicians from across Malaysia auditioned and 110 – with an average age of 18 years – were selected to form the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).
After a period of intensive training under its founding conductor, Kevin Field, and mentors drawn from the ranks of the MPO,
Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS on 25 August 2007. It has since established a pattern of music camps held three to four times a year, culminating in performances in Kuala Lumpur and beyond. It has toured Peninsula Malaysia (2007 and 2010), Sabah and Sarawak (2008), Singapore (2009 and 2017), Brisbane, Australia (2012), Kedah (2013) and Johor Bahru (2014).
Auditions are held every year to provide opportunities for talented young Malaysian musicians to join the MPYO and participate in orchestral training and performances,
under the guidance of the MPO musicians as tutors. The music repertoire ranges from symphonic repertoire to specially-commissioned works by Malaysian composers. In an innovative project, ‘Jazzaar’, in 2010, the orchestra collaborated with leading jazz musicians from the USA, led by Fritz Renold who wrote his Suite Nusantara specially for the project.
In 2013, the orchestra performed in Kedah with renowned local singers Datin Paduka Julie Sudiro and Datuk Yusni Hamid in a keroncong concert attended by the HRH Agong of Malaysia. In 2014, the ensemble collaborated with Yayasan Warisan Johor and Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia in Johor Baru. In 2015, the MPYO was given the honour to perform at the opening of the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur.
In 2017, the MPYO was invited to perform at Majlis Santapan Malam Memuliakan Mesyuarat Majlis Raja-Raja ke-247 at Istana Negara, and Majlis Jamuan Teh Sempena Sambutan Ulang Tahun Hari Keputeraan Rasmi DYMM Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, Sultan Johor.
