This week, Tidbits brings you some history-making events from the crazy days of summers past and present. • • When the cornerstone of the Statue of Liberty was laid in August of 1884, it was placed on Bedloe’s Island, which previously had been known as Love Island. The land didn’t officially become Liberty Island until 1956. When the Statue of Liberty arrived from France, it was in 350 individual pieces that were put together and officially dedi- cated in October of 1886. • • The first edition of Sports Illustrated hit the newsstands in August of 1954, featuring Milwaukee Braves player Eddie Mathews on the cover. Inside, readers found a tri-fold of 27 baseball trading cards, including such greats as Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider. Although a hit, the magazine showed no profit for the next 12 years. Michael Jordan has set the record for the number of cover appearances at 56, with the New York Yankees the most featured team. Four U.S. Presidents have made the cover — Kennedy, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. Every year, Sports Illustrated gives its “Sportsman of the Year” award. Roger Bannister, the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, was given that honor during the magazine’s inaugural year. • • In August of 1914, the 48-mile (77-km) Panama Canal opened to ship traffic, with its first cargo liner, the SS Ancon. It had been under construction since 1904, and opening day was two years ahead of schedule. Nearly 27,500 people lost their lives during the construction. By passing through the canal, a ship sailing from New York to San Francisco saves about 8,000 miles (12,875 km) over a trip around the tip Issue #470 Of South Denver Metro ...continued on page 2 August 23 - September 1, 2011 Published by Knight Media, LLC FOR ADVERTISING CALL (303) 797-7572 [email protected] Visit our Littleton Store at 92 East Arapahoe Rd. 5 Denver Metro Locations Las Delicias GREAT MEXICAN FOOD SINCE 1976 Bring in this Coupon for Free Nachos w/purchase of 2 Entrees Valid only M-F for Happy Hour from 2 - 6 pm Valid only at Littleton location Present Coupon to Server $1.99 Open at 9:00 a.m. Come in for Happy Hour 2 - 6 pm Mon -Fri Take-Out Avail. Two friends, one an optimist and the other a pessimist, could never quite agree on any topic of discus-sion. One day the optimist decided he had found a good way to pull his friend out of his continual pessimis-tic thinking. The optimist owned a hunting dog that could walk on water. His plan? Take the pessimist and the dog out duck hunting in a boat. They got out into the middle of the lake, and the optimist brought down a duck. The dog immediately walked out across the water, re-trieved the duck, and walked back to the boat. The optimist looked at his pessimistic friend and said, “What do you think about that?” The pessimist replied, “That dog can’t swim, can he?”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A troubling situation takes a positive turn and moves toward a resolution that should please you and your supporters. Meanwhile, make time to deal with new domestic issues.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to reassess your goals and consider shifting directions. Remember to keep an open mind, and be prepared to make chang-es as new opportunities arise.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Rely on your strong Mercury aspect to help you close that communication gap before it be-comes too wide to cross. A sibling or other family member has news.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re about to get off that emotional roller coaster and start experiencing more stability than you’ve been used to. This is a good time to let someone new into your life.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Good news: A trusted friend comes through for you. But you still need to shed that last scrap of self-doubt and once more become the cool, confident Cat we all know and love.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Things should be getting back to a less hectic pace. Enjoy the more peaceful at-mosphere. You earned it. But don’t forget about those still-unresolved issues.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A more positive family relationship develops as misunderstandings are explained away. A job situation appears promising, but check it out before you act on it.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. That on-the-job situation is working out as you’d hoped. Now’s a good time to relax and to enjoy the com-pany of family and close friends.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to Decem-ber 21) You might feel as if you’re caught in an emotional tug-of-war. But don’t be rushed into a decision on either side. Wait for more facts before you act.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat’s usually high level of self-confidence is brimming over these days. This should help you deal with a situation that you’ve avoided for far too long. Go for it.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Relationships become more intense. But be careful not to be pushed into decisions you’re not comfortable with. Remember: You’re the one in charge of your life.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You need to show more confidence in your abil-ity to reach your goals. Make that long-delayed decision, and avoid floundering around in a sea of self-doubt.BORN THIS WEEK: Although you ap-pear to be strongly opinionated, you can also be open to other ideas -- so long as they are presented with logic and clarity.

Billy’s father picked him up from school to take him to a dental ap-pointment. Knowing the acting roles for the school play were be-ing posted that day, he asked Billy if he got a part. Billy enthusiasti-cally announced that he’d gotten a part. “I play a man who’s been married for twenty years.” “That’s great, son. Keep up the good work and before you know it they’ll be giving you a speaking part.”

Know Your Investment Risks - and How to Respond

When you invest, you take some risks. While you can’t totally avoid these risks, you can take steps to help reduce their impact and increase your comfort level. And the more comfortable you are with your investments, the easier it will be to follow a long-term strat-egy that can help you meet your goals.

Let’s look at the most common types of risk re-lated to investing, along with some suggestions on helping to reduce these risks:

Losing principal — This type of risk is most closely associated with investing. For example, when you purchase a stock, you know that its value could go up or down. If it drops below your purchase price, and you then sell your shares, you will lose some of your principal. Your response — You can’t eliminate the risk of losing principal, but by owning a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities and other types of investments, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Losing value when interest rates change — This type of risk primarily affects fixed-income investments, such as bonds. If you purchase a bond that pays, say, a 4% interest rate, and the market rate goes up to 5%, then the value of your bond will drop because no one will be willing to pay you the full price for it when newer, higher-yielding bonds are available. Your response — You can combat, or even ignore, interest rate risk by holding your bonds until they mature. By doing so, you’ll get your full principal back, provided the issuer doesn’t default, and you’ll continue to receive regular interest payments unless the bonds are “called,” or repurchased by the issuer. (You can help pro-tect against this by purchasing bonds that have some degree of “call protection” and by owning bonds with different maturities.) Losing purchasing power — This risk largely applies to fixed-rate investments such as cer-tificates of deposit (CDs). To illustrate: If you purchase a CD that pays 2%, and the inflation rate is 3%, you are actually losing purchasing power. Your response — Despite their vulnerability to inflation, CDs can offer you some valuable ben-efits, such as preservation of principal. Yet if you are concerned about fighting inflation, you may want to look for investments than have the potential to offer rising income, such as divi-dend-paying stocks. In fact, you can find stocks that have increased their dividends for many consecutive years. (Be aware, though, that com-panies can reduce or eliminate dividends at any

time. Also, an investment in stocks fluctuates, and you could lose your principal.) Apart from these individual techniques to re-duce investment-related risk, you should also save early and save often — because the more money you accumulate, the greater your abil-ity to follow a long-term strategy that reflects your personal risk tolerance. That’s why it’s a good idea to contribute as much as possible over the years to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan.

By understanding the different types of invest-ment risk, and by acting to help lessen them, you can reduce much of the stress sometimes associated with investing — while you in-crease your prospects for achieving your objectives.

Acupuncture for Pain ReliefDEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have never seen you address acupuncture. I have had a bad back for three months, have seen two doctors and have followed their instructions. I have taken medicines that ease the pain. My back isn’t as sore as it once was, but it still bothers me. Acupuncture has been suggested. What are your views on it? -- M.L.

ANSWER: I have no misgivings about trying acupuncture for pain relief. The Chinese have used it for centuries. Any treatment that lasts that long must have some value. Fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points and are left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. From time to time, the acupuncturist stimulates the needles. The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society endorse acupuncture. A recent review article in the New England Journal of Medicine, a premier medical journal, also endorsed it. Who am I not to follow suit? Back pain strikes almost everyone at some point in life. The booklet on it discusses its causes and treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: It’s that time of year again -- the no-see-um season. I can feel a sharp sting when bitten. It goes away and then returns as a large swelling with incessant itching. What can I do to prevent this reaction? Others don’t react this bad. I also use DEET to deter these diabolical pests. Should I wash it off as soon as I get indoors? -- C.R.

ANSWERS: No-see-ums got that name because they’re barely visible, only 1/16th of an inch. Dawn and dusk are their busiest hours. Avoidance is the best protection. The red welt you describe arises about 12 or more hours after the bite and can be as large as an inch in diameter. It does itch.DEET is the best repellent, but it’s not a 100 percent barrier for all users. Have you tried a higher concen-tration? Are you following label directions regarding when to reapply it? When you get back home, wash treated skin with soap and water. Also, you can spray your clothes with permethrin. It will give you addi-tional protection. Wear long slacks tucked into your socks and long-sleeved tops.As for the itch, antihistamines are suggested. I admit they don’t work for everyone. ***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his col-umn whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

¥ To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a knee-high panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I did this on his workbench too. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled the hardware out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas

¥ Ripen a green tomato by wrapping it in a sheet of newspaper or placing it in a small, plain paper bag. Leave it on the counter, and check it daily until ripe.

¥ To keep ice cream from dripping out of the bot-tom of a cone, just place a small marshmallow or a piece of marshmallow in the bottom of the cone before you fill it.

¥ Our family loves to make our own pizza, and we purchase dough from a pizzeria. On pizza nights, I pick up the dough first thing on the way home from work. I get it close to where I work and let it sit in a bowl in the car while I pick up the kids and drive home. It takes about 45 minutes, so it’s risen nicely while we’ve been on the go. -- E.F. in New York

¥ If you’ve just purchased an expensive electronic item, take the packaging to a recycling center rather than advertise your purchase by putting the box at the curb. If you aren’t able to take it somewhere, cut the box into uniform pieces and bind them together, nonprinted side facing out.
