The British Red Cross helps people in crisis
whoever and wherever they are. We are the
largest voluntary organisation supporting 190
countries which provides a global network
that responds to conflicts around the world
including Syria and Yemen. We also respond
to natural disasters such as the earthquakes
in Nepal and Italy, as well as individual
emergencies like flooding on the Somerset
Levels and supporting local communities.
In Cornwall we assist practically to help
people gain their independence after a crisis
or being in hospital by providing mobility
aids and wheelchairs. We have an emergency
response vehicle and team, who with the
other emergency organisations, coordinate to
bring relief to people who have been
involved in a fire or flood. Finally we are
working with the Co-Op to reach out to
people who are isolated and lonely helping
them to reconnect with their communities.
This inspirational evening ‘Humanity in Crisis’,
has been organised by Vice President
Lucy Dorrien-Smith, and represented by the
artists who have had the vision to empathise
and paint the plight of those in need.

‘‘13 years ago I made a series of drawings of the24 hour queue of asylum seekers and economic
migrants outside the Home Office Nationality
Directorate in Croydon. 13 years later the
people are different but the problems are the
same - thousands of people trying to gain
access to another country to improve, and in
many cases, save, their lives. Recent world
conflict has forced people to take huge risks
and live in abject circumstance to escape war.
By showing a new series of paintings inspired
by the refugee crisis alongside the original
Home Office drawings I hope to emphasise
how little has changed in the way society views
and handles human displacement.
