Kia Ora whānau,

Wow! We are into Week 2 already. The first week was certainly a little strange with the break for Waitangi Day. I hope you all managed to get a chance to put your feet up on Wednesday.

I know our tamariki were all a little disappointed that we were not able to hold the Top Town competition on Wednesday like we planned. The weather certainly did not play ball on that day. The good news is that we have it booked in for a day in March as we know it was going to be a lot of fun. You will see the date in the calendar.

The start of the term is always a little hectic so a very big thank you from us all for helping to get the children organised and ready to start the term. A very special thank you for making sure that all of our tamariki were protected from the sun with their sun hats from day one. We certainly have had a warm start to the year.

Our Year 7 and 8 students begin their technology programme this week at Rangiora Borough. I am sure that they will enjoy the challenges that are on offer. This year we are being offered a 5th class which is a digital technologies class. All the best to our senior class.

Ngā mihi nui, Darryn Ward

Meet the Teacher - Tonight!!Our Meet the Teacher evening will be tonight.Teachers will use this time to introduce themselves, their programme, expectations, outline opportunities and to answer any questions you may have. You can choose which classroom you go to and each session will be presented twice except for Kowhai. The Kowhai session will be presented only once at 6pm.

The timetable for the evening is:6-6.30pm All teachers will present 6.30-7.00pm Every teacher will present again except for Kowhai,

Mrs Birchler7.00-7.30 pm Kauri and Kahikatea camp meeting.

Student Profile SheetsWe would like to ask parents to please check their child's details carefully and their student profile sheets that have been sent home and to update, add or amend as necessary so we can ensure our records are up to date. Once they are checked please return to the School Office at their earliest convenience, even if they are all correct.

Having the correct contact details for each family and accurate information about emergency contacts is extremely important. We do appreciate you taking the time to check the sheets for us. Thank you

Signing in / Signing outFrom time to time students need to head away from school during the day, or they arrive later than normal. We have a book in the office where we ask all parents to sign their children out if they are leaving during the day, or if they have arrived late or returned from an appointment. This ensures that if we have an emergency that we are able to account for all of our students.

New Blinds in the HallWe have had new pull down blinds installed in the hall last week. Thanks to the work of Jenny McClintock, we were able to secure a grant to pay for these. They have been installed so that we now have a dedicated space where if we need to go into lock down we could do so, and still have access to toilets.

Teacher Only Days - Confirmed DatesLast week I outlined how we have been given 8 Teacher Only Days to hold over the next 3 years without having to make them up. As I mentioned last week, schools can use these at their discretion. The staff will be using these days to complete the term reports and assessment requirements.

I can now confirm that the following dates have been set for our teacher only days for this year:Term 1 Friday 13th March (Nth Loburn School Teacher Only Day)Term 3 Friday 14th August (Nth Loburn School Teacher Only Day)Term 4 Monday 2nd November (CoL day)

School BandLast week Elizabeth Flemming met with some of our budding musicians to discuss what the school band might look like in 2020. We had a good number fronting up which was pleasing.

What we do know about our band is that Elizabeth is expert at taking them from their early stages and making them sound very professional. We are looking forward to seeing who is involved and hearing them throughout the year.

Kids for KidsKeeping up with the music theme, I am delighted to be able to share that we have registered for the Kids for Kids Concert again this year. We do not have the exact dates yet. Once I do I will certainly share them with the community. The Kids for Kids Choir is a lot of fun so we are all looking forward to getting stuck in. We have not yet made a decision about the age groups involved however it is likely to be Year 3 to 8.

Music LessonsMaree Thom gives music lessons to pupils at North Loburn School. She can do Piano / Keyboard, guitar and Ukulele. These lessons will be held on a Thursday in the hall at 12:40pm. If you would like more information please contact Maree on 0212609899.

Working Bee - Sunday 23rdIf you have been in the school grounds over the holidays you would have seen that the weeds have been having a great time and have looked to take over in a number of areas around the school.

We have set a date for our first Working Bee of the year. This will be Sunday 23rd February. For those families that are new to our school, we welcome everyone to these events. We will have a sausage sizzle for lunch as well as refreshments. For our students, they can earn a Summit Challenge if they attend and help out. We will send out more information about this event soon.

Some of the jobs that we know we will be looking at are:● General weeding● GTT vege gardens● Spreading mulch (where required)● Erecting a pergola on the bike track (we will need some post hole diggers and some

keen people for this one)● Washing of walls (where needed)● Sweeping of paths● Other jobs

Kupu o te wiki (same as last week)Each week we look to have a phrase or word for our students to be learning. This is just a small way that we can help develop our knowledge and use of Te Reo. Mrs Webb sets out a schedule for us to follow and each week we will include this in the newsletter.

The first one for this year is shown in the image.

Useful Health WebsiteDuring our recent Teacher Only Day we were reminded of the usefulness of the Ministry of Health website. It has excellent health advice and information for families around illness, financial support and services available. The Healthline 0800 611 116 is a good number to keep handy, run by specialists who can assess and give advice over the phone.

LOST - Dog whistle necklaceA miniature dog whistle necklace, somewhere between the mobility park area and the school swimming pool, may have even ended up in the pool. If found please see or email Mrs Hassall: [email protected]. Thank you very much.
