Acknowledging Generosity

Kia Ora whānau,

Over the last few weeks we have had a number of events where our tamariki have been asked to support different events or groups. On each of these occasions our tamariki and whānau have been generous in their support and on each occasion this has been acknowledged by those organising the event.

This all started with our Salvation Army can mufti day where we were able to gift more than 150 cans to the Salvation Army. Nigel De Maine from the Salvation Army acknowledged the effort and the extreme level of generosity.

Next we had a class mufti day that was organised by one of our senior students as a Summit Challenge with all money raised going towards supporting one of our current families who have a family member who is unwell. Again the generosity of this group was overwhelming and acknowledged by the family.

And to complete the trifecta we held our mufti day on Friday for Big Brothers, Big Sisters where we managed to raise $213 to go towards this very important programme. Once again thanks was given to our kura for our generosity.

To be able to see first hand the level of generosity and support that comes from within our community is heartwarming. I would like to thank all of our tamariki, our whānau and our staff for the way they have supported so many different causes.

Have a great week. Ngā mihi nui, Darryn Ward 1

Thanks to Akira Le Fevre for presenting at our parent information evening.

Sexuality Education - Navigating the Journey UpdateOn Tuesday we held our parent evening for Sexuality Education where we had a staff member from Family Planning come and present information on the programme we will be delivering. While it was a disappointing turnout, the conversation was certainly well worthwhile. It was a good chance to better understand the programme, ask questions and explore the resources.

One of the first slides that was presented was the question What is sexuality? The answer that was shared is that Sexuality is:

● a basic part of who we are● a part of our identity and includes our values, attitudes & behaviours● about self-worth, relationships, orientation, feelings & emotions, communication,

intimacy, body image, sensuality, gender and ability to reproduce.

This was a key part of the presentation as we wanted to inform our community that this programme will deal with a variety of concepts across the levels.

Sexuality Education is one of the seven key areas of learning in the Health and Physical Education area of the NZ Curriculum. It is a requirement to teach sexuality education from Years 1 to 10. While the teaching of Sexualtiy Education is compulsory it is one subject where parents can request that their children are removed from specific lessons. The process for requesting withdrawal from these lessons involves putting your request in writing to the Principal. Your child’s teacher will be able to inform you of what lessons are to be taught each week prior to making a request.

I would like to point out that if you choose to withdraw your child, it is still highly likely that they will hear about the content from a lesson through talk in the playground, and this may not necessarily be accurate. It is for this reason that we strongly believe in the important of all children participating in this programme. It is our aim, through the teaching of this programme to try and normalise the conversation that may occur in the playground by providing all of our children with the information they need to better understand themselves and changes at puberty.

Kupu o te wikiOur phrase for this week is about asking our tamariki to move closer. With this Week being Maori Language Week we will certainly be going over the various phrases we have been promoting.

Physical Friday - None this weekWhile the Rippa Rugby World Cup is running we won’t have Physical Friday.

This Week is Māori Language WeekMāori language week has been celebrated since 1975. There are many things that we can all be doing to support Māori Language Week. Some examples of these are:

● Make te reo welcome at your work and in your home● Encourage others to use and learn te reo Māori; welcome Māori

language into your life● Pronounce Māori words correctly when speaking English● Learn a little, use a little● Learn more, and use what you know● Keep improving your language, and share what you know

I would encourage you to revisit some of our newsletters from this term to check up on the terms we have been teaching. I would also encourage you to ask your own tamariki to try and teach you what they know. This website has some great idea. https://www.tewikiotereomaori.co.nz/maori-language-week-ideas/

One of the areas that we have been working on in regards to developing Te Reo at North Loburn is to have our current values translated. We hope to be able to share these with you in the coming weeks. This is an exciting piece of work.

Weetbix TRYathlon 2020We have created a North Loburn School group for the 2019/20 Sanitarium Weet-bix Kids TRYathlon. Our unique link went live on the 28th August. If you are keen to enter we suggest you do it earlier rather than later. The date of the Christchurch event is Sunday 23rd February 2020 at Jellie Park in Christchurch.https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=35577&G=100193

Winter LunchesThis week our students will be having pies for winter lunches. Please remember to send your child along to school with their lunch box so that they can put any leftover pie to bring home.

Summit Challenge - Newsletter ArticlesIf your child is still looking for some Summit Challenges, then one way to do this is to provide a series of articles for the newsletter. I am always keen to put student writing in the newsletter. Your child would need to check with their teacher to see what the requirement is before sending anything to me to put in.

Junior Cricket comes to SchoolOn Friday at lunchtime we had a visit from Tim Gruijters from Canterbury Country Cricket. He held a 40 minute session with our Year 0-3 students in the hall as a way of promoting the Super Star Cricket Academy which is being run in many of the districts.

The session was well attended by many of the juniors. They were having a great time and certainly showing a lot of energy. A big thank you to Charley and Harry from Totara, both keen cricketers, who helped Tim out during the session.

Cricket is one of the many sports that has been looking at how to redevelop the way the game is played and make is fit for age with our younger students. The changes that have been made mean the game is not as long as it used to be for our younger students.

There is a screenshot below that provides information on how to sign up for the academy. This has also been placed on our Facebook page and emailed home.

Subway Looking for StaffSubway, who have been helping us with our winter lunches are looking for some new staff. They have a couple of positions which may suit a parent with school age kids. There are day shifts within school hours and maybe some evening/weekend work.

If you are interested you can contact Roslynne Lovell at [email protected]

Last week’s coffee voucher winner . . .For those who read last week’s newsletter you will have seen a message thrown in amongst another one asking you to email me the name of some teams who were written about. Thank you to those who contacted me. The winner of the voucher was Kerry Rickard. A voucher is on its way to you.

New Basketball HoopWith so many keen and budding basketballers it is great to be able to say that we now have a new hoop that has been built especially for our younger students. Ken Hawke and been busy making this for us and installed it last week. It will be a great addition to our playground.

Thanks Ken for being so awesome and making this for us.4
