Time

Local time was based on solar time.Greenwich mean time or Greenwich meridian time(GMT), the former name for mean solar time at the original site of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, which is located on the prime meridian.

Time zone was conceived during the advent of railways and telecommunications.

Sir Sandford Fleming, Canadian railway engineer, developed the system of worldwide time zones

Divided into 24 time zones, each spaced 15º of longitude apart

An International Prime Meridian Conference was held in Washington, DC, in 1884 to standardize time around the world and select the Prime Meridian or the meridian that is designated 0º from which all other longitudes are measured .

A time zone is a region of the earth that has uniform standard time, usually referred to as the local time.

UTC - Zulu time (time standard) = GMT

Local time = UTC + time zone or

Local time = UTC - time zone
