BASIC SKILLS PROGRAM

Congratulations to the 2018 class speaker,

ENZO D’AMICO Good evening, my name is Enzo D’Amico and I am a 2018 high school graduate. Like many of you here tonight, I was sentenced to 12 years in school. At least that is what it felt like. Right from day one I struggled. I never did anything right as far as the classroom went. I was a professional troublemaker. There was a constant flow of letters in the mailbox from the principals. Then sophomore year, the pressure began about looking at colleges and getting an idea of what you want to do with your life. But I was different. I wasn’t looking to go to college. To me I did not see the sense in going to college for 4 years, have all that debt, and then start working at 25 years old. I wanted to go to work right away, and get the training I

needed seemed to be the better option for me. Unfortunately, traditional high schools didn’t seem to help you much in the act of looking for a career instead of a college. That brought me here to Middletown Adult Education. Within the first week of attending the program, I felt I would successfully graduate and find a job in the field I was looking for. For the first time in my life, I even liked coming to school, which is something that you’d never hear me say before. The teachers and staff are some of the friendliest, most helpful people I have ever met. I found it so much more enjoyable than regular schools and I was able to get the ball rolling in the workforce. After class one day, I visited the College and Career Center and the next thing I knew, I was meeting with trade schools, creating a resume, and submitting job applications. As a result, I have been accepted into the General Dynamics Electric Boat Technical Education Training program. I am going to be a welder and I start training in September. I’d like to again thank the Middletown Adult Education teachers and staff.

The Family Learning Program of Middletown Adult Education is an NAEYC accredited program. It recognizes that a parent is the child’s first and most important teacher. We support this by bringing parents in need of adult education and their children (ages 12 weeks - 3 years) together into a dual-generational learning program. Parents and their children can share the excitement and joy of learning together! Family Learning provides early childhood education and adult academic instruction, including college preparation, job certificate programs, and job search assistance. It strengthens the parent-child relationship and enhances parenting skills through a parenting class and daily parent and child activities.

MIDDLETOWN ADULT EDUCATION IS A

“Keep trying and you will find your path to success.”

Shamima Sreety and Sahida Khanom are two exceptional and very proud individuals. Shamima and Sahida’s story is actually a successful three-year journey attending school at Middletown Adult Education, which started in ESL classes, progressed to basic education classes, and ultimately

enrolled in General Educational Development (GED) classes. Every step of the way has been a well-planned commitment to learn and to broaden their academic knowledge. Their perseverance, steady practice, and excellent attendance has granted them true rewards. Most interestingly, Middletown Adult Education’s Even Start Family Literacy Program has been a learning center for their children, while each of them put in the time and the effort toward their personal growth and academic success. Shamima and Sahida are two women who were born in Bangladesh and now, together with their families, have made the United States their home. The distance they’ve travelled to their new home is relative to their educational achievements. During the 2017-18 school year, Shamima and Sahida each earned a PEP (People Empowering People) Certification, and Shamima earned a Customer Service and Sales Professional Certification. Also, throughout the school year, both Shamima and Sahida attended many of Middletown Adult Education’s College and Career Center classes, presentations, and activities, including a campus tour of Middlesex Community College. In June, 2018, Shamima successfully passed her General Educational Development examination and earned her (GED} Connecticut High School Diploma! Both Shamima and Sahida plan to pursue a college degree at Middlesex Community College.
